Abstract:
Agricultural products are indispensable components of daily life. Nowadays, most cities in China, food supply is already setup, however the whole food supply chain is quite long with low efficiency. After the harvest of agricultural products, they have been transported to multi-hierarchical markets and go through plurality sales links by simple vehicles before meeting consumer. Due to the existence of an imperfect agricultural product supply system, specifically the inadequate infrastructure for cold-chain transportation and low-level storage technology, agricultural products and aquatic products, among others, suffer huge loss rates ranging from 15% to 30% during picking, transportation, and storage as well as during processing in other logistics sectors. Thus, some unscrupulous producers or agents add preservatives to the agricultural products in order to keep them looks with good quality. Besides, for the producers, though they do their utmost for farming and cultivating,they still living at the bottom of the social ladder with low income. For the consumer, owing to the increasing standard of living, the improvement of the logistical system and the structural adjustment of modern agricultural products, more and more consumers no longer just pursue the goal of having sufficient food to eat. Instead, they hope to eat better and healthier and prefer fresher or more diverse food options with high quality and nutrition. This thesis aims to study the existing agricultural product system in Guangzhou, focusing on the agricultural products supply model and discusses ways to revolutionize the “farm-to-table” agricultural products channel by proposing a new supply model in a regional scale to narrow the gap between consumer and producer in two main methods. On one hand, establish Agricultural Association to coordinate the whole system and guide the local farmer cultivate agricultural product and deliver their product to the consumer with high efficiency. On the other hand, attract the costumer come to productive area that they not only get the product directly but also understand the process of production. In these ways can guarantee the safety, freshness, and nutritional value of agricultural products, improve farmer’s income and satisfied consumer’s requirement by achieving a high-efficiency, low-pollution and energy-saving “farm-to-table” channel for local agricultural products.

Abstract:
A precious resource and public asset, the urban waterfront is crucial to shaping the city image. It also contributes to quality of life of the city’s inhabitants and visitors. However, many waterfront landscapes are only superficially pleasant; some of these lack other significant qualities needed by the public. Designers and end-users may have different notions on waterfront qualities, and communication gaps possibly exist between the two groups. Designers might formulate objectives and ideas on waterfront qualities without adequately understanding the true needs and preferences of users, which encompass aspects deeper than merely visual features. This means that perceptions on certain “latent” waterfront attributes need to be studied. The designers should create more human-oriented waterfront landscapes by gaining a better understanding of real user needs. Public perceptions regarding waterfront landscape and the key aspects associated with those perceptions should be studied. Therefore, the main objective of the present research is to explore an alternative approach to waterfront design through the eyes of users. Tianjin Haihe riverfront was selected for a case study, which consisted of two stages. First, a contextual study included a historical review of the interactive relationship between the city and river. The major forces driving recent redevelopments, including economic, social, environmental, and cultural ones, were identified. Then, the comprehensive master plan and major achievements were critically reviewed. Second, a field study was conducted on October 2009, during which four important aspects of the urban waterfront were specifically examined. These aspects were access, use, comfort, and image. First-hand empirical data were collected using a combined approach involving observation, attitude survey, cognitive mapping, and photo simulation. In all, 110 on-site and 60 off-site completed questionnaires were obtained. Data were analysed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. In general, majority of the respondents were satisfied with the updated waterfront environment. Significant changes were perceived and appreciated. However, the current landscape is not yet ideal. The riverfront is more accessible but lacks vitality: it is simply a “passing by” space rather than a vibrant destination. Successful features (and unsuccessful issues), related to the four key aspects of access, use, comfort, and image were addressed. Correlations between certain design features and emotional reactions were explored. Fiver factors concerning visual perceptions of waterfront landscape were explored: preference, complexity, style, greenery, and openness. Patterns of perceptions among three groups of observers (i.e., local non-professionals, local professionals, and non-local professionals) were found, based on their familiarity with the site and professional background. Local non-professionals seemed more generous in their perceptions. A tendency to over-praise the waterfront settings was apparent. However, they were not as sensitive to aesthetic issues. Non-locals professionals seemed more critical, perhaps leading them to underestimate the waterfront landscape. With the resultant patterns of perception regarding the waterfront landscape, the present study can help obtain a better understanding of the gap between professionals and the general public. Hence, the means to narrow this gap may be found. The special context of Tianjin provides a relevant reference for other mainland Chinese waterfront cities. The methodology provides a flexible framework as well as useful techniques which can further develop research in other fields. Moreover, waterfront design criteria were developed in this work. Recommendations and potential issues related to current and future urban waterfront design were also discussed.

Abstract:
Stormwater flooding problems become more and more serious in China recently. Besides the effects of global warming, the deficiency of conventional storm drain system can’t be neglected. This thesis is aiming to analyze the potential problems of existing municipal drainage infrastructure, introduce a more advanced alternative -- Low Impact Development (LID) to deal with urban stormwater management in residential development, which is a soft approach favoring natural way of treatment. LID as a solution not only reduce the pressure in drainage pipes during flood peak, but can also supplement underground water ecologically, which could positively protect precious water resources in China. Since urbanization is extremely rapid in China, if not understanding the fundamental reason, solely depending on increasing the diameters of drainage pipes will never catch up the speed of runoff that generated by impervious area, which resulting from more and more surface runoff being circulated and centralized to the storm drain system in a shorter and shorter time. The objective of this thesis is to let authority and public recognize the fundamental reason of this problem and at the same time realize the benefits of LID. Moreover, provide a residential landscape design that integrated LID within Chinese specific urban context as an alternative.

Though Hong Kong has considerable green spaces, the enclosed, nice urban landscape is usually too symbolic for deep rest while the joyful natural park lacks setting for people to have long stay and deep enjoyment. I would like to take the opportunity of the thesis to research and discuss of a place where the landscape could be blurred with human intervention providing space for people to sustainable stay, enjoy nature and relax from the high density, high speed, and high-pressured urban life. Meanwhile, the local setting will be blurred in to the landscape as a feature that enhance the interaction between human and nature as well. It will be a space for people frequently and easier to be back to nature, a place for people to calm, clear, and pure their minds and heart, and a location to build a sustainable and harmonious relationship between people and nature. A meditation field is defined as such a place in my design. Blurring landscape is a new approach in this design where the blurring landscape layer turns the original site constrains into opportunity and sustainable human stay, and on the other hand, it enhances the interactive landscape feature for deep relax and completion through five senses.

The word 'landscape' was often understood in the Chinese context as 'mountains and water' within the scope of traditional garden making. As a result of this tradition, landscape architects first emerging in eariy twentieth century China concerned themselves especially with the design of gardens and parks. This situation remained almost unchanged during the radical socialist revolution, which resulted in the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 that was led by Chairman Mao Zedong (1893-1976). During the Mao era (1949-1979), the impact of the Chinese communist ideology on landscape was far-ranging and ground breaking. Besides extensive development of public parks for socialist education as well as recreational purposes, cities were reshaped with large housing areas created for workers - the proletariats, and urban squares playing a crucial role in exhibiting political power, while the countryside was reshaped from a hierarchical landscape with an exploitative nature to an egalitarian one, where the broad masses were to benefit from improvements.
