Abstract:
Abstract “The French market gardens in the environs of Paris and other large cities are very curious-looking places.” Thus was the report in McCall's magazine in July of 1909 (1) in reference to the burgeon of bell glasses (cloches) used for winter and spring production of vegetables. Perhaps the gardening scenery around Paris was the fulfillment of the words of a classic English gardener, Mrs. Loudon, who in 1869 stated, “The cloche is quite unknown to the majority of amateurs, but nothing ever introduced to their notice will prove of greater or more varied utility” (4). By 1910, McKay (5) had placed the number of bell glasses in Paris at 2,160,000. Hence, the bell glass/cloche is the forerunner of the row cover/tunnel which is so prevalent in Europe and Japan today and which is becoming more popular in the United States.

Abstract:
The analysis of planning experience of inhabited localities urban beautification in view of reconstruction was undertaken in the article. The question of Ukrainian experience of urban beautification system in accordance with approved standards and State Constructional Standards was envisaged. Analysis of validation state of local documents in urban beautification field was carried out and it has shown deficient percentage of regulatory documents approval on local level, which is one of key issues of urban beautification development. Furthermore, detailed analysis of foreign experience of urban beautification planning and development trend of this system I such countries, as USA, Canada, Russian Federation, France, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan was carried out. It is shown that first and critical stage of planning of effective urban beautification is preparing and approving corresponding certificates and standards. Emphasis added to functioning normative legal documents on issues relating to urban beautification, in accordance to which the territory reconstruction in mentioned countries is realized. It was established that reference direction of urban beautification development in mentioned countries lies in parking lots removing out of the borders of curtilage or underground parking arrangement, landscape gardening development and classification of such territories by levels of urban gardening, territory reconstruction in accordance with typical schemes of street infrastructure development, urban gardening, cycle paths, etc. It is shown that problem solution of habitable open grounds organization on city level resides in usage intensification of such territories, and on the level of residential compounds – in increasing exploitation properties of open grounds. As a result of undertaken analysis it was established that raised problem of increasing the effectiveness of residential area usage within residential areas imposes complex approach, including question of land development intensiveness, architectural and planning organization and open grounds beautification.

Abstract:
Allotment gardens (AGs) are widely used in metropolitan areas around the world to offer agricultural opportunities to urban residents. However, there are not enough individual plots for residents to rent for urban gardening, and research on AGs from a city-wide perspective is ongoing. In addition, AGs have a long history in Tokyo, yet few international studies on the current situation of AGs have addressed Asian cities. Thus, this study intends to analyze the provision of AGs and its influencing factors in Tokyo. Using ArcGIS combined the 472-points dataset created by geo-coordinate mapping with urban GIS data to reveal spatial characteristics in four dimensions. Results demonstrate that most AGs are in the urbanization promotion area; most municipalities have AGs; AGs are concentrated within 20 to 30 km from the center of Tokyo; the AGs’ clusters are located at the municipal boundaries. We conducted multiple regressions to determine the influencing factors at the municipal level, with the provision that AGs are related to population density, land price, and the ratio of productive green space. The policy implication of this study is that policymakers need to consider the siting strategy of AGs based on spatial characteristics of AGs.

Abstract:
This study takes one step further to complement the application of a method for mapping informal green spaces (IGSs) using an efficient combination of open-source data with simple tools and algorithms. IGSs are unofficially recognized by the government as vegetation spaces designed for recreation, gardening, and forestry in urban areas. Due to the economic crisis, many formal green spaces such as urban parks and garden projects have been postponed, while IGSs have significant potential as green space retrofits. However, because they are small and spatially continuous and cannot be fully detected via airborne surveys, they are surveyed in small areas and neglected by government and city planners. Therefore, in this research, we combined the use of Google Street View (GSV) data with machine learning to develop a survey method that can be used to survey a wide area at once. Deeplab V3+ was used to segment the semantics based on the model created using 1000 labelled photos, with an accuracy rate of nearly 65%. Applying this method gave high accuracy in Ichikawa, Japan, with 3029 photos, and matched the results of a field survey in a previous study. In contrast, low accuracy was seen in Ho Chi Minh City, with 204 photos, where the quality of the GSV data was considerably lower.

"For the love of insects: gardening grows positive emotions (biophilia) towards invertebrates." Journal of Insect Conservation, July 29, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10841-022-00419-x.

Abstract:
Abstract As growing urban populations have fewer chances to experience nature, i.e., ‘the extinction of experience’, the subsequent loss of emotional affinities for biodiversity (biophilia) pose major challenges to environmental conservation. Gardening, as an everyday nature interaction and window into invertebrate ecological functioning may offer opportunities to develop biophilia. However, the associations between gardening and biophilia/biophobia towards invertebrates remains untested. We conducted an online survey (n = 443) with adults in Japan about their nature and gardening experiences, demographics, and species identification knowledge in relation to their biophilia (like) and biophobia (dislike, fear, and disgust) towards invertebrates. We also asked participants about their perceptions of invertebrates as ‘beneficials’ or ‘pests’. From responses, we ranked invertebrates according to the attitudes held towards them. We found that frequent gardeners were more likely to express biophilia and perceive invertebrates as beneficial, and generally less likely to express biophobia towards invertebrates. Frequency of visits to recreational parks, but not national/state parks was associated with increased biophilia and reduced dislike and fear of invertebrates. Our results suggest that gardening, in addition to localised nature experiences, acts as a possible pathway towards appreciation of invertebrate biodiversity. We recommend that policymakers and conservation organisations view urban gardening as a potential tool to minimise the negative impacts of the extinction of experience. Implications for insect conservation As people are more likely to conserve what they love, finding ways to nurture positive attitudes towards insects is critical for the public support needed for successful insect conservation. Considering gardening is a relatively accessible form of nature connection even in cities, our findings of the association between gardening and biophilia towards invertebrates holds promise for potential pathways towards fostering support for insect conservation now and into the future.
