Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Originally conceived for use by U.S. military and intelligence communities, the LandScan web application and population datasets, produced by East View Geospatial with data from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, are useful for various reasons including: spatial data analysis, humanitarian aid and relief, disease modeling, market growth, and sustainable development/environmental protection. Older datasets, back to 2000, are archived as new versions are made available. There are three main audiences of LandScan: researchers who download and use the datasets; researchers who use the WMS and WCS services; and those who use the web platform. This review focuses mainly on the web app.Search functionalities include the ability to drill down to the pixel level, i.e., one square kilometer grid units; to quickly get population counts for an area on the world map by pointing and clicking; and to get population counts for an area using the polygon drawing function.

Abstract:
The article discusses matters concerning place by way of three prose poems byDanish writer Louis Jensen. The readings understand place by way of the neighbouring concepts of landscape and space. They set out from a phenomenological understanding of place, presenting basic insights of this approach (especially using the works of Edward S. Casey) and proceeds by way of the challenges given by the prose poems to a critique of phenomenological place theory. The critique points out that it tends to marginalize historic and semiotic aspects of place and questions its insistence on continuity between experience and knowledge. Instead the article suggests that a global sense of place involves discontinuity between place and space, and further more it is argued that the idea in Casey that place has been overruled by space in the modern era, might by correct from the point of view of philosophy, but it is not in accordance with the history of art and literature.

Abstract:
<p>The article reflects on the relationship between landscape architects, influential clients, and public involvement in Ekeberg, a publicly owned area of Oslo, where significant changes have taken place since the beginning of World War II. “Ekebergparken” was established as a public sculpture park in 2013. The park is funded entirely by private funds owned by the investor Christian Ringnes. The plans for the park sparked a public debate about private investor influence over public space, and protesters organized demonstrations against the establishment. After the opening of the park, the opposition has subsided, and criticism has been replaced by praise and recognition. Inside the park, there are remains of an honorary cemetery established by the German occupying forces in 1940. An honorary tribunal set up by the Association of Norwegian landscape architects condemned the Norwegian landscape architects who designed the cemetery for Germans after the war ended in 1945. The development of the park in both cases raises questions of democratic control over public space and ethical frames for landscape architects’ work. The two examples in this article show that understanding or lack of understanding of the political context landscape architects are working in, can result in their work subsequently receiving wide recognition in one case, and is characterized as a democratic failure in the other.</p>

Abstract:
The first Landsat was placed in orbit on 23 July 1972, followed by a series of missions that have provided nearly continuous, two-satellite 8-day repeat image coverage of the Earth's land areas for the last half-century. These observations have substantially enhanced our understanding of the Earth's terrestrial dynamics, both as a major element of the Earth's physical system, the primary home of humans, and the major source of resources that support them. The history of Landsat is complex, reflective of the human systems that sustain it. Despite the conflicted perspectives surrounding the continuation of the program, Landsat has survived based on worldwide recognition of its critical contributions to understanding land dynamics, management of natural resources and Earth system science. Launch of Landsat 9 is anticipated in Fall 2021, and current planning for the next generation, Landsat Next is well underway. The community of Landsat data users is looking forward to another 50 years of the Landsat program.

Abstract:
The free and open policy of Landsat data in 2008 completely changed the way that Landsat data was analyzed and used, particularly for applications such as time series analysis. Nine years later, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) released the first version of Landsat Analysis Ready Data (ARD) for the United States, which was another milestone in Landsat history. The Landsat time series is so convenient and easy to use and has triggered science that was not possible a few decades ago. In this Editorial, we review the current status of Landsat ARD, introduce scientific studies of Landsat ARD from this special issue, and discuss global Landsat ARD.
