Abstract:
Colin Visser's recent article, “The Descent of Orpheus at the Cockpit, Drury Lane,” performed a valuable service by calling attention to the presence of technically sophisticated French “Machine” drama in London as early as 1661. Visser bases his argument on a pamphlet in the Malone collection at the Bodleian, “The Description of the Great Machines, of the DESCENT of ORPHEUS Into Hell. Presented by the French Commedians at the Cock-pit in Drury-lane.” This libretto, printed in both English and French, does not identify the French troupe, but Chapoton's Descente d'Orphée was in the repertory of les comédiens de Mademoiselle d'Orléans, a touring company whose name disappears from the Continental records for most of the period of French activity at the Cockpit.

Abstract:
Financial ratios are very important in a company, because it is the most effective way to find out financial data on a company by comparing the current financial statements of the company with the previous one. To facilitate this comparison, book closure can be done. Closing the book itself is useful to determine the company's financial position before closing, by looking at the final results of the profit and loss. It is known that the process of closing the book takes a long time with extra precision. However, this has become easier by using WBAOS (Web Based Accounting Online System) 2.0, because companies are more flexible in preparing financial statements, starting from the lane balance sheet, income statement, to the periodic cash flow, where this cash flow provides relevant information regarding cash in and out of the company. Abstract:
A method for the in-house treatment of partial wastewater flows and the recycling of treated process water into the textile finishing process was developed in order to recycle effluents from textile finishing industry and feed them back into the production process. The method is based on a two-stage biological anaerobic–aerobic process to split colouring wastewater agents and to degrade organic sub-stances contained in the water as well as a chemical stage to remove the remaining color of the water with the help of ozone. In the framework of a research and development project a demonstration plant for a treatment capacity of 1440m3 per working day was installed and started in a textile finishing company. At the plant, a wastewater flow and a recycling flow are treated separately in two different treatment lanes. Approximately 40% of the total wastewater flows, i.e. 576m3/d are treated in the wastewater lane, and a maximum of 60% of total wastewater, i.e. 864m3/d are treated in the recycling lane. Thanks to the preliminary treatment of wastewater flows, which are discharged into the municipal sewage works, a reduction of average COD levels in the sewage works effluents could be achieved.

This article presents an overview of the EyeQ silicon chip developed by Jerusalem-based company Mobileye. The company has been designing hardware and training software algorithms to help vehicles detect and avoid other vehicles. In a major advance, the company has been able to shrink its Advanced Driving Assist System to fit on a single silicon chip it calls EyeQ. When wired to a camera, the system offers superior cruise control, keeps its vehicle in lane, recognizes traffic signs, and can automatically brake for pedestrians and other dangerously close vehicles. The company, which was founded by Amnon Shashua, a professor of computer science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has already sold 20 million of its chips. The advantage of having so many of them already traveling the world’s highways extends beyond the immediate safety they provide. Mobileye is mining the data those chips collect to create a high-definition mapping system that will work with real-time data to help vehicles navigate and eventually become fully autonomous.

Abstract:
Based on deep neural network multi-task learning technology, lane image detection is studied to improve the application level of driverless technology, improve assisted driving technology and reduce traffic accidents. The lane line database published by Caltech and Tucson company is used to extract the ROI (Region of Interest), scale, and inverse perspective transformation as well as to preprocess the image, so as to enrich the data set and improve the efficiency of the algorithm. In this study, ZFNet is used to replace the basic networks of VPGNet, and their structures are changed to improve the detection efficiency. Multi-label classification, grid box regression and object mask are used as three task modules to build a multi-task learning network named ZF-VPGNet. Considering that neural networks will be combined with embedded systems in the future, the network will be compressed to CZF-VPGNet without excessively affecting the accuracy. Experimental results show that the vision system of driverless technology in this study achieved good test results. In the case of fuzzy lane line and missing lane line mark, the improved algorithm can still detect and obtain the correct results, and achieves high accuracy and robustness. CZF-VPGNet can achieve high real-time performance (26FPS), and a single forward pass takes about 36 ms or less.

Abstract:
This article looks at George Desnoyer's repertoire and dancing partnerships during the final phases of his career, at Drury Lane between 1734 and 1740 and at Covent Garden from 1740 to 1742. Following his appearances in John Weaver's The Judgment of Paris and his departure from London, presumably in April 1733, Desnoyer seems to have returned to work for Augustus III of Poland. 1 A letter from Raymond, dancing master in Württemberg, dated 18 December 1733 (New Style) records ‘nous avons l'honneur d’être connu de Monsieur Desnoyer qui est au service de Sa Majesté le roi Auguste de Pologne’. 2 After the troubled 1732–1733 season at Drury Lane, George Desnoyer prudently stayed away from London for some time. It was not until 17 October 1734 that the Grub Street Journal reported ‘A few days ago arriv'd Mons. Denoyer from Poland’. On 4 November, Drury Lane advertised entr'acte dancing ‘Serious and Comic, by Monsieur Denoyer, the first time of his performance since his arrival from Poland’. By this time, the company's quarrels had been settled and Drury Lane was under the management of another gentleman-amateur, Charles Fleetwood, with Theophilus Cibber as his deputy manager actually carrying out much of the work. 3 Desnoyer's erstwhile partner Mrs Booth, briefly one of the theatre's patentees following the death of her husband, had retired from the stage a year earlier. Desnoyer returned to a stable but much changed Drury Lane company.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to seek to provide support and extend work-family Border Theory (BT) in order to investigate organizational and individual factors that determine the complex nature of work-family balance (WFB). Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative research was conducted in a company in Greece. In total, 20 in-depth interviews were conducted. Data analysis was guided by interpretative phenomenological analysis. Findings – The key findings illustrate that strong borders protect the investigated, powerful, work domain and expand only to accommodate its’ needs. In congruence with BT, employees choose to be central participants in the powerful, highly impermeable and inflexibly bordered, work domain. The deeply entrenched organizational culture, as well as leaders’ behavior and leadership style, support the development of an array of positive work attitudes which boost central participation in the work domain. Due to the strongly bordered work setting, employees were found to choose segmentation as a WFB cope strategy; however, shifts in the participants’ life phase, as well as unfulfilled expectations, lead them to reset priorities and reevaluate their central participation in the dominant work domain. Practical implications – The present study has implications for HR practitioners. Communication and open discussions on work-family themes reveal issues that can positively contribute to WFB. Further to this, organizations need to consider individual differences when they deal with WFB issues and frame interventions to facilitate this process. Originality/value – This paper adds to current thinking in BT by illustrating that organizational culture, leadership and work attitudes have a strong impact on the nature of the work domain and its borders, as well as on employees’ central participation in the work setting and the attained WFB.

Understanding the elements of customer segmentation and positioning for products such as backpacks and travel luggage. Understand the levers for turnaround management. Qualitative evaluation of an opportunity for investment – greenfield versus brownfield. Developing a marketing plan for growth. Case overview/synopsis Indian Luggage market has an oligopoly structure with three major brands – very important person (VIP) Industries, Samsonite and Safari Industries Ltd. (SIL), holding around 90% share of the organized market. The market had evolved slowly, with the players offering limited assortment and having limited manufacturing capacities in India. SIL, having been in business for nearly 25 years, had been registering a flat top line. In 2011, the top management shuffle at VIP Industries witnessed the exit of the then MD, Mr Sudhir Jatia. Mr Jatia decided to acquire the majority stake of 56.55% for Rs 29 crores for the struggling SIL. What followed in the subsequent years was the resurgence of SIL to a noteworthy position in the industry. From a merely 2% market share in 2011, SIL went on to hold nearly 16% market share in 2019. This growth in market share, along with CAGR of almost 15% for the luggage market overall, has boosted the revenue of SIL by nearly 10-folds from INR 620m in 2011 to INR 5.73bn in the year 2018. Several reasons had been identified behind the growth of this company, such as – Mr Jatia’s leadership style, focus on profitable stock keeping units, acquisition of other brands, operational efficiency and financial infusion. However, the larger question was that – Will SIL, which had been following a challenger strategy to date, be able to overcome the leaders in the industry? What strategies should it pursue now? Abstract:
In 1934, Louis B. Wright wrote, “All the world knows since the publication of studies by Professors Graves, Rollins, and Hotson that . . . [the drama's] light never went out completely.” Yet in a 2001 reference book, a contributor writes, “After an eighteen year hiatus. . . .” No wonder that Dale Randall could legitimately write in 1995, “We are asked to believe that little or nothing happened in English drama for the next eighteen years” beginning in 1642. His Winter Fruit is an important survey of dramatic activity during the Interregnum, and scholars continue to document the varieties of theatrical activities in the period. My essay is a modest contribution to the accumulation of details about a lingering, integral puzzle: how two London companies with experienced actors and new stars came into existence so quickly in 1660. It also shows that the Old City of London was not as inhospitable to drama as it is often portrayed. The piece of this puzzle that I can supply is the picture of John Rhodes and the Drapers' Company. Of Rhodes, John Downes wrote that in the winter of 1659–60 he “fitted up a House then for Acting call'd the Cock-Pit in Drury-Lane, and in a short time Compleated his Company.” Downes supplies a list of plays acted there beginning in February and comments that one of these new actors, Thomas Betterton, then “but 22 Years Old, was highly Applauded for his Acting . . . ; his Voice being then as Audibly strong, full and Articulate, as in the Prime of his Acting.”

Abstract:
Bus transport in Dublin has been and continues to be perceived as a poor alternative to the car. It is generally seen as the “poor person’s” mode of transport, with many people upgrading to a car as soon as they can afford to do so. The result has been a significant increase in traffic congestion fueled by the recent period of economic growth during which car ownership levels have risen from 238 per 1,000 in 1991 to 350 per 1,000 in 1999. One of the main difficulties facing the state-owned bus company is that buses compete with cars for inadequate road space. In 1995, the Dublin Transportation Initiative proposed a new public transport strategy incorporating light rail transit and what they described as quality bus corridors (QBCs). To date, 9 out of 11 QBCs have been implemented. The characteristics of a QBC include a dedicated lane between 0700 to 1900 in most cases, although some 24-hour bus corridors also exist. Although there is no physical separation between the bus lane and other lanes, enforcement by the police is strict and there is a relatively low level of noncompliance. The QBC concept is described in more detail and the effects since introduction in Dublin are discussed, particularly with regard to travel times, passenger numbers, and reliability of service frequency. Future plans for bus transport in Dublin are mentioned, highlighting the significant contribution buses will be expected to make in solving Dublin’s transport problems.

Abstract:
The expediency of the organization of the combined mode of traffic on city bus routes with taken into account the introduction allocating a priority lane in order to increase transport demand, due to involving interests of transport companies and the requests of passengers in terms of quality, reliability and safety are considered. As the level of motorization increases, a significant number of road accidents (accidents) are recorded by the Road Traffic Safety Administration in Ukraine, with not only an increase in their number but also their severity. Most road traffic accidents occur with the participation of city buses. In order to reduce the risk of vehicle collision and improve traffic safety, it is proposed to organize the movement of urban transport vehicles on a dedicated lane. To assess the possibility of implementing high-speed traffic or BRT-like systems by allocating a lane for urban transport routes, Kharkiv city route system was considered with various factors in mind. From the considered urban routes for further consideration regarding the implementation of the dedicated (specialized) lane for routes of the urban transport, the route network of the Slobidsky district of Kharkiv city was selected. Obtained indicators of the route № 226e of Kharkiv during full-time observations in the peak period and the use of the objective function of the feasibility of introducing a combined mode of traffic on city routes indicate that when organizing a combined mode of traffic on the route № 226e, a rational ratio of the number of vehicles is 4 buses operating normally and 2 in express mode. In this ratio, the total cost is minimal, which satisfies both the interests of the transport company and the interests of passengers. The assessment of the feasibility of organizing a combined mode of traffic on urban routes, taking into account the implementation of a dedicated lane indicates that such a process contributes to the reduction of harmful emis-sions into the air and increases the demand for urban passenger transport services by improving the quality of service. The results show that the implementation of a dedicated (specialized) lane for urban transport routes has the effect of reducing the likelihood of an accident, increasing the level of traffic safety along the route. Abstract:
XYZ Company is a distributor focused on distributing floor and wall ceramic tiles. XYZ Company has its own warehouse for storing finished goods with Last In First Out rotation. The XYZ Company Warehouse has an area of 12,312 m2 with floor stack system. An issue currently risen to the warehouse is that the warehouse is currently overcapacity that urges the company to store some of its SKUs to be stored out of the block or even outside the warehouse. The overcapacity causes some problems including accessibility problem, distribution of storage and retrieval activities, and damaged product. In addition, higher throughput items allocation were not placed near to the input/output point so the material handling went through long travel to do its activities and it caused higher total travel distance. This research is focused on determining the warehouse layout to increase warehouse storage capacity and reduce travel distance. The procedure taken to solve the issue is by redesigning warehouse layout through heuristic approach method. The heuristic approach method is comprised by algorithms that can determine dimensions of storage zone and material assignment needed in designing warehouse layout. It is aimed at having some combinations of lane depths and storage zones to increase the warehouse storage capacity by considering the throughput of each SKU. The next step is allocating the items so it can reduce the monthly travel distance. The proposed design layout, shows that warehouse capacity increases by 35.53% or 5,319 pallet positions and monthly travel distance decreases by 24.58% or 216,032 meters. Keywords—heuristic approach, travel distance, warehouse layout.

Abstract:
From the perspective of supply-side reform in China, it is hard for COSCO Shipping, a merged company with a strong shipping capacity, to abandon the container shipping market. Meanwhile, the new company could cooperate with new strategic ports along the Maritime Silk Road in liner service. Against this backdrop, this paper aims to optimize the liner shipping network (LSN) from strategic, tactical, and operational levels and help the merged shipping company adjust its operational measures according to market changes. The optimization towards different levels of decision-making process is a new research of highly practical values. Specifically, this paper created two-phase optimization models for LSN based on the selection of hub ports. In Network Assessment (NA) phase, the LSNs of two types of hub ports selected are designed and assessed on strategic and tactical levels, and the primary and secondary routes are identified; in Network Operation (NO) phase, the “path-based flow” formulations are proposed from the operational level, considering operational measures including demand rejection and flow integration. The models in both phases are mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), but are solved by different tools: CPLEX for the NA phase models and the Genetic Algorithm (GA) for the NO phase models due to the computational complexity of the latter problem. Then, a computational experiment is performed on the LSN of COSCO Shipping on the Persian Gulf trade lane. The results have proved the effectiveness of the methodology and inspired important countermeasures for the merged shipping company.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to present a history of the marketing of hope chests in the USA, focusing in particular on one very successful sales promotion, the Lane Company’s Girl Graduate Plan. The Girl Graduate Plan is placed within its historical context to better understand the socioeconomic forces that contributed to its success for a considerable period but ultimately led to decreased demand for the product. Design/methodology/approach The history of the marketing of hope or marriage chests draws upon primary sources located in the Lane Company Collection at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. Secondary sources and images of advertising culled from Google image searches provided additional insight into the operation of the company’s Girl Graduate Plan. Findings While the Lane Company benefitted in the form of increased sales, profit and brand awareness and loyalty from prevailing socio-economic trends, which supported the success of its Girl Graduate Plan, including targeting the youth market, this promotion ultimately fell victim to the company’s failure to stay abreast of social changes related to the role of women in society. Research limitations/implications Like all historical research, this research is dependent upon the historical sources that are accessible. The authors combined documents available from the Virginia Historical Society archives with online searches, but other data sources may well exist. Practical implications This history investigates how one manufacturer, a leader in the North American industry, collaborated with furniture dealers to promote their products to young women who were about to become the primary decision makers for the purchase of home furnishings. As such, it provides an historical example of the power of successful collaboration with channel partners. It also provides an example of innovation within an already crowded market. Social implications The hope chest as an object of material culture can be found in many cultures worldwide. It has variously represented a woman’s coming of age, the love relationship between a couple and a family’s social status. It has also served as a woman’s store of wealth. This history details how changing social values influenced the popularity of the hope chest tradition in the USA. Originality/value The history of the marketing of hope chests is an area that has not been seriously considered in consumption histories or in histories of marketing practices to date, in spite of the continuing sentimental appeal for many consumers.

Abstract:
Connected vehicles (CVs) exchange a variety of information instantly with surrounding vehicles and traffic facilities, which could smooth traffic flow significantly. The objective of this paper is to analyze the effect of CVs on running speed. This study compared the delay time, travel time, and running speed in the normal and the connected states, respectively, through VISSIM (a traffic simulation software developed by PTV company in German). The optimization speed model was established to simulate the decision-makings of CVs in MATLAB, considering the parameters of vehicle distance, average speed, and acceleration, etc. After the simulation, the vehicle information including speed, travel time, and delay time under the normal and the connected states were compared and evaluated, and the influence of different CV rates on the results was analyzed. In a two-lane arterial road, running speed in the connected state increase by 4 km/h, and the total travel time and delay time decrease by 5.34% and 16.76%, respectively, compared to those in the normal state. The optimal CV market penetration rate related to running speed and delay time is 60%. This simulation-based study applies user-defined lane change and lateral behavior rules, and takes different CV rates into consideration, which is more reliable and practical to estimate the impact of CV on road traffic characteristics.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Automated driving has received a high degree of public attention in recent years as it will lead to profound changes in mobility, society and urban development. Despite several product announcements from automobile manufacturers and mobility providers, many questions have not yet been answered completely. The need of lane-level HD maps was widely discussed and has been the reason for company acquisitions. HD maps are tailored towards supporting the operation of an automated vehicle. However, the development of this technology also requires road space models, but with a completely different focus and level of detail. Therefore, this article investigates the system development and testing challenges of automated driving. Based on this, requirements of road space models for developing automated driving are derived and gaps to current standards are indicated.</p>

Abstract:
Research background. Sponsorship and sports marketing have been in existence for years and now have been greatly expanded and developed. Organizers of major events can hardly expect to receive some funds without expecting to give something back in return. Historically, sponsorship originated as an inexpensive addition to the marketing mix and was perceived as a philanthropic endeavour. In other words, corporations classified sponsorship as a donation and it was not considered a ‘marketing expense’, but nowadays it has changed significantly (Abiodun, 2011; Seguin et al., 2005). The attitude changed with regard to sponsorship when corporations began searching for a return on investment from donations made to various organisations (Meenaghan, 1991; Ramanantsoa, Thiery-Balé, 1989; Wilkinson, 1993). This came after a substantial increase in resources allocated to sponsorship, meaning that sponsorship became increasingly recognised as a valid promotional tool, a business expense that needed justification in the form of Return On Investment (Seguin et al., 2005). In addition, we have to keep track of constantly changing information. Nowadays, sponsors are increasingly more strategic in their approach to seeking value from sponsorship opportunities. Therefore, it is meaningful to understand that sponsorship is beneficial for both sides. Sponsorship proposals, for sport organizations, can help to achieve investment opportunities for business enterprises. For sponsors themselves, sponsorship can achieve even the most important company goals, such as access to a new marketplace, increased sales, (which directly will bring the capability of an organization to grow), increased popularity, strengthened image. Nowadays, sponsors are increasingly more strategic in their approach of seeking value from sponsorship opportunities. Furthermore, it is very important to understand how sponsors decisions will affect all of the organization in a strategic prospect. This could take us to a better comprehension of the key areas to be considered in the development of sponsorship proposals. Many of sports sponsorship proposals are counterproductive, because not taking into account the existing relationship between sponsorship and companies strategies. Results and findings. Organization situation is the firm’s goals, capabilities and resources. In organizations one of the most important strategic goals is to increase popularity, strengthen the image, achievement on the new market segment resources (Mitchel et al., 2013; Lane, 2009). The company can be sponsoring sport events which can bring new markets to it, positioning against competitors and other objectives. Product – market situation is the product category comparison new to the marketplace, growing, maturing or declining (Lane, 2009). Sponsoring can help achieve new marketplace, increase in sales which directly will bring capability of the organization to grow. A company involved in sports sponsorships can send instant messages to millions of potential buyers, generate community goodwill part, but most importantly it can increase market share and profit (Bocse et al., 2012). Competitive situation is how many competitors there are. What are their characteristics and marketing methods (Lane, 2009)? In essence, sport sponsorship has become a powerful marketing strategy used by firms to communicate with vast external and internal audiences to differentiate themselves from competitors (Cornwell, 2008), with the ultimate goal to orienting consumer’s preferences toward sponsors’ products (Barros, Silvestre, 2006) (Biscaia et al., 2013). Companies that are able to successfully tap into a consumer’s psychological connectedness with a sports team and can become more meaningful to that consumer (Henseler et al., 2011), what makes benefits and extension for brands and relationship. Environmental situation is what industry-wide and company–specific environmental opportunities and threats are most important (Mitchel et al., 2011; Lane, 2009). Quinn defines strategic decisions as “those decisions that determine the overall direction of an enterprise and its ultimate viability in light of the unpredictable and the unknowable changes that may occur in its most important surrounding environments.” (Shank, 2009, p. 342). It is a two-way street for both the sports entity and the sponsoring organization whereby the latter, tends to associate itself or its brands with the positive images obtained by the unique personality of the sporting event (Abiodun, 2011). The advantage of image building, promoted in a long term strategy, lies in the impact it has on an audience – target accurately determined because of the fittest event (Bocse et al., 2012). In our research we define the scope of effect of sport sponsorship on sponsors and reveal the sports sponsorship opportunities and links in sponsors’ strategic planning. The research method is content analyses and systemizing based upon theoretical framework. Keywords: sponsorship, sport sponsorship proposal, strategy.

Abstract:
This article proposes a discussion and brings about issues such as organizational identity and culture, the role of upper leadership, motivation at work that might interfere in the way the employee hired by a given outsourcing company sees themselves and acts before the client. Initially, concepts such as outsourcing, different approaches of leadership, motivation, organizational identity and culture are explored, especially by Mascarenhas, Silva, Freitas, Denison, Hoojiberb, Lane and Lief. After that, the article presents the research method and field study applied to an outsourcing company from the segment of collective meals. Then, the results and its analysis, proving how difficult it is for the employee to comprehend the organizational culture and identity of the outsourcing company where they work, since their contact with the client seems to be much stronger. The physical distance between the employee and the outsourcing company headquarters seems to play an important role in this process. The answers of their first leaders during interviews shed light on the difficulty they have to keep the link between the employees and the outsourcing company, bring the values and the vision of the company closer to the team, since many of the members do not find it relevant to understand or work according to such ideals, causing general lack of motivation. Through the analysis of the data collected during interviews and theoretical background, this article indicates a form of managers’ leadership closer to their leaders, making communication easier between their first leaders and the outsourcing company’s headquarters, bringing both ends closer. The team of first leaders need to feel supported by their managers so they can pass down this same support to their employees. This means more training and focus to align the outsourcing company’s perspectives with the frontline of employees, making the organizational culture and identity come true, focusing mainly on the employee’s mingling and socializing processes.

Abstract:
Abstract. Over the decades, autonomous driving technology has attracted a lot of attention and is under rapid development. However, it still suffers from inadequate accuracy in a certain area, such as the urban area, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) hostile area, due to the multipath interference or Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) reception. In order to realize fully autonomous applications, High Definition Maps (HD Maps) become extra assisted information for autonomous vehicles to improve road safety in recent years. Compared with the conventional navigation maps, the accuracy requirement in HD Maps, which is 20 cm in the horizontal direction and 30 cm in 3D space, is considerably higher than the conventional one. Additionally, HD Maps consist of rich and high accurate road traffic information and road elements. For the requirement of high accuracy, conducting a Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) system is an appropriate method to collect the geospatial data accurately and efficiently. Nowadays, digital vector maps are constructed by digitalizing manually on the collected data. However, the manual process spends a lot of manpower and is not efficient and practical for a large field. Therefore, this paper proposes to automatically construct the crucial road elements, such as road edge, lane line, and centerline, to generate the HD Maps based on point clouds collected by the MMS from the surveying company. The RMSEs in the horizontal direction of the road edge, lane line, and centerline are all lower than 30 cm in 3D space.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article explores aspects of transatlantic culture through the career and works of the baritone, librettist and impresario Henri Drayton (1822–72). Using the published operas as well as reviews from period newspapers, the author retraces the events of the Philadelphia-born Drayton's professional life. Concentrating on the creative works, the author shows how Drayton went from playing stock roles at London's Drury Lane Theatre to collaborating with composers such as Joseph Duggan and Edward James Loder. With his wife, the soprano Susanna Lowe, Drayton performed in what he termed ‘drawing-room’ operas. Their popularity attracted the attention of visiting US impresario P. T. Barnum, who brought Drayton to New York in 1859. When his success in the USA was cut short by the outbreak of the Civil War, Drayton returned to London and created a one-man ‘entertainment’, Federals and Confederates. Spending what would be his final years as a member of the Richings English Opera Company, Drayton returned to New York in 1869.

Abstract:
This research aims at detecting the interactions between policy maker and travelers when making public transport policy and strategies to optimize relevant policy combination. In the two scenarios of whether to set a bus lane or not, travel cost functions of bus and car are proposed, respectively, with the in-vehicle comfort level of passengers considered. By introducing the bottleneck model and transit assignment model, travelers’ behaviors are revealed according to different travel mode. Focusing on minimizing the total cost of the system (TSC), Stackelberg game model is built to describe the dynamic interactions between the government, the bus company, and travelers. Finally, kriging surrogate method is proposed on account of numerical simulation to find solution to the game model and propose the optimal policy combination and resource allocation. The results show an effective performance: under the assumption that the travel distance is 20km, the optimized policy combination can reduce TSC by 8.59% and 9.82% in two scenarios, respectively, and reduce travel cost per person by 10.28% and 15.85%, respectively.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the profitability of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) as a shipping lane from the financial perspective of shipping companies under post 2020 sulphur regulations.Design/methodology/approachThis study develops profit estimation model, and the profitability of the NSR is assessed for a Handymax Medium Range (MR) tanker vessel using scenarios in combination with spot market earning levels, the regulation compliance method and destination ports. The required freight rates are calculated to justify the decision of shipowners to transit a tanker from the Baltic spot market to the NSR navigation.FindingsResults suggest that the required freight rates from the Arctic trade to justify the transit to the NSR are higher than the actual agreed rates in the past, which implies low viability of the NSR as a regular shipping lane. It was also found that the required freight rates are affected by the spot market earning levels, compliance method and duration of the voyage.Research limitations/implicationsThis study takes a new approach on assessing the NSR viability by comprehensively assessing the annual profitability and including the spot market trade as an opportunity cost for the NSR shipping. Despite various scenarios used in this study, a sensitivity analysis would be useful for future research.Practical implicationsThis study suggests how much freight rates a shipping company would need to charge if it were to offer tanker shipping services to four major Asian ports while simultaneously operating at the Baltic Sea during the remainder of the year.Originality/valueThis study adopts a market-oriented approach by incorporating both earnings and costs (including opportunity costs) in the profitability model rather than merely analyzing the total cost of shipping via the NSR. This study also analyzes impact of IMO 2020 Sulphur regulation on the NSR profitability.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to look for an automated, economical and fast method able to identify the elements of an existing road layout, whose original geometric design could date back to distant ages and could have undergone major modifications over the years. The analysis has been directed towards the Italian two-lane rural roads; the national public company ANAS made available its graph, obtained from high-performance surveys, that represents about 90% of these roads’ network. The graph is made up of a collection of georeferenced points but does not recognize or describe the geometric elements making up the roadway. Consequently, it has been necessary to design and develop an original procedure, subsequently implemented in a programming platform, able to identify the characteristics of the several parts, which constitute the reference axes of the existing roads. This research focuses on the horizontal geometry assessing the coherence, consistency and homogeneity of the roads’ layout, through the ex post application of the regulatory model for the design verification. If road sections are identified in which some conditions are not significantly met, further investigation should be conducted in order to ensure road safety and to plan any road upgrading activities.

Abstract:
In her recent book on celebrity pregnancy, legal scholar Renée Ann Cramer writes, “in the years from 1970 to 2000, popular culture became more open to performances of pregnancy; once kept secret and articulated as private, pregnancy became ‘public.’” This is not wholly true. In the English-speaking world, “celebrity pregnancy,” with its overt performances of femininity and maternity, bodily monitoring, and careful dance between the concealment and revelation of private information, had its first public moment in the long eighteenth century. That century's professional theatre was a site for the intersection of two forms of women's labor: the maternal labor of pregnancy and birth, which affected women of all classes throughout a century with rapidly rising birth rates, and the theatrical labor of professional actresses. Although the latter has been the subject of much-needed study in recent decades, the impact of maternal labor on the professional theatre of the time is only beginning to be explored. Between 1700 and 1800, birth rates for middle- and upper-class British woman rose significantly. Among the aristocracy, rates doubled from four to eight children, and middle-class women averaged seven births by the end of the century. At the same time, women in the professional theatre were inventing and modeling new forms of public womanhood, capitalizing on a burgeoning culture of female celebrity, and, in some cases, wielding exceptional economic and artistic power. Though not all actresses had children, many did, and at rates that were not unlike those of their nontheatrical counterparts. For these women, the successful balancing of maternal and theatrical labor could be vital to their careers and, in many cases, their family's survival. The need to balance personal and professional demands was all the more imperative within the hectic and extremely competitive repertory system. The day-to-day repertory of a London company was of necessity a malleable thing, accommodating short runs of popular pieces, audience requests, illnesses and absences of company members, and the perpetual state of competition between the patent houses of Covent Garden and Drury Lane. To compete profitably, managers needed competent and popular performers (bodies) and performance vehicles (texts) in which to feature them. As the available bodies changed, then, so too did the available plays for performance.

Abstract:
By all indications, the public persona of the late Restoration actress Anne Bracegirdle was built on the speculative foundation of maidenhead. A leading ingénue of multiple talents, Bracegirdle played significant roles in comedy, tragedy, and music-drama from her debut in 1688 to her retirement in 1707. In comedy, Bracegirdle specialized in marriageable young women of rank, wit, and fortune. In serious drama, Bracegirdle often played the pathetic heroine, a virtuous woman stalked by a predatory man. Though primarily an actress, Bracegirdle also called upon her impressive soprano voice in many entr'actes and the occasional musical part. A first-rank player and hardworking company member from very early in her career, Bracegirdle played some eighty roles over a nineteen-year span that kept her consistently before the public eye. Despite Bracegirdle's constant appearances on the stages of Drury Lane, Dorset Garden, Lincoln's Inn Fields, and the Queen's Theatre in the Haymarket, few extant sources identify the qualities that typified her playing; commentators rarely discuss her acting as a discrete set of practices, aptitudes, or characterizations. Rather, prodigious evidence attests to the public's obsession with Bracegirdle's reputation for virginity. Called the “Romantick Virgin,” the actress was thought to be chaste, and many writers focused attention on her sexual virtue. Indeed, Bracegirdle's chastity seems to have been the cornerstone of her fame. As Colley Cibber wrote, her star status rose in conjunction with her reputation for purity:

Abstract:
Promoting a transition in individuals’ travel mode from car to an integrated metro and bikeshare systems is expected to effectively reduce the traffic congestion that results mainly from commute trips performed by individual automobiles. This paper focuses on the use frequency of an integrated metro–bikeshare by individuals, and presents empirical evidence from Nanjing, China. Using one-week GPS data collected from the Mobike company, the spatiotemporal characteristics of origin/destination for cyclists who would likely to use shared bike as a feeder mode to metro are examined. Three areas of travel-related spatiotemporal information were extracted including (1) the distribution of walking distances between metro stations and shared bike parking lots; (2) the distribution of cycling times between origins/destinations and metro stations; and (3) the times when metro–bikeshare users pick up/drop off shared bikes to transfer to/from a metro. Incorporating these three features into a questionnaire design, an intercept survey of possible factors on the use of the combined mode was conducted at seven functional metro stations. An ordered logistic regression model was used to examine the significant factors that influence groupings of metro passengers. Results showed that the high-, medium- and low-frequency groups of metro–bikeshare users accounted for 9.92%, 21.98% and 68.1%, respectively. Education, individual income, travel purpose, travel time on the metro, workplace location and bike lane infrastructure were found to have significant impacts on metro passengers’ use frequency of integrated metro–bikeshares. Relevant policies and interventions for metro passengers of Nanjing are proposed to encourage the integration of metro and bikeshare systems.

Abstract:
As the number and interests of charitable institutions expanded throughout Britain during the eighteenth century, so special fund-raising events, anniversary celebrations, and meetings multiplied. During 1775, for example, the major metropolitan charities and a plethora of minor benevolent societies courted middle- and upper-class Londoners with invitations to concerts and exhibitions. Men could support various hospitals and other good causes by dining in taverns and City Livery Halls in company with civic and ecclesiastical dignitaries, even noble and royal dukes. Both men and women might attend charities' anniversary services, ornamented with special music and a sermon, choosing among dispensaries, hospitals, lying-in charities, religious societies, and various efforts to reform and reclaim the poor for public benefit. On Sundays, armed with tickets, special prayer books, and even keys to their rented pews, women and men might attend the chapel of a philanthropic institution. Alternatively, they could listen to a fund-raising sermon and watch charity-school children arrayed in the gallery of a parish church. Toward the end of the year, they might pay half a guinea each to hear Handel's Messiah in the Foundling Hospital Chapel or go to Covent Garden and Drury Lane to watch tragedies and farces. Charitable activity thus extended beyond churches, alms, and sermons into the theater. It spilled onto the streets as gentlemen processed to dinner; it accompanied art and music. Conversely, waves of fashion drove visitors to one philanthropic institution or another to see deserving recipients, hear a particularly popular preacher, or to be observed themselves.

Abstract:
The emergence of new performance paradigms in the second half of the twentieth century is only now being recognized as a fresh phase in human history. The creation of the new discipline, or, as some would call it, the anti-discipline of performance studies in universities is just a small chapter in a ubiquitous story. Everywhere performance is becoming a key quality of endeavour, whether in science and technology, commerce and industry, government and civics, or humanities and the arts. We are experiencing the creation of what Baz Kershaw here calls the ‘performative society’ – a society in which the human is crucially constituted through performance. But in such a society, what happens to the traditional notions and practices of drama and theatre? In this inaugural lecture, Kershaw looks for signs and portents of the future of drama and theatre in the performative society, finds mostly dissolution and deep panic, and tentatively suggests the need for a radical turn that will embrace the promiscuity of performance. Baz Kershaw, currently Professor of Drama at the University of Bristol, trained and worked as a design engineer before reading English and Philosophy at Manchester University. He has had extensive experience as a director and writer in radical theatre, including productions at the Drury Lane Arts Lab and with the Devon-based group Medium Fair, where he founded the first reminiscence theatre company Fair Old Times. His latest book is The Radical in Performance (Routledge, 1999). More recently he wrote about the ecologies of performance in NTQ 62.

Abstract:
In what would a postmodern theatrum mundi, or ‘theatre of the world’, consist? In an ironic inversion of the very concept, with the microcosm issuing a unilateral declaration of independence – or of incorporation? Or in a neo-neoplatonic recognition that it is but a cultural construct of an outer world that is itself culturally constructed? In the following article, Baz Kershaw makes connections between the high-imperial Victorian love of glasshouses, which at once created and constrained their ‘theatre of nature’, and the massive 'nineties ecological experiment of ‘Biosphere II’ – ‘a gigantic glass ark the size of an aircraft hangar situated in the Southern Arizona desert’, which embraces all the main types of terrain in the global eco-system. In the Biosphere's ambiguous position between deeply serious scientific experiment and commodified theme park, Kershaw sees an hermetically-sealed system analogous to much contemporary theatre – whose intrinsic opacity is often further blurred by a theorizing no less reductive than that of the obsessive Victorian taxonomists. He offers not answers, but ‘meditations’ on the problem of creating an ecologically meaningful theatre. Baz Kershaw, currently Professor of Drama at the University of Bristol, originally trained and worked as a design engineer. He has had extensive experience as a director and writer in radical theatre, including productions at the Drury Lane Arts Lab and as co-director of Medium Fair, the first mobile rural community arts group, and of the reminiscence theatre company Fair Old Times. He is the author of The Politics of Performance: Radical Theatre as Cultural Intervention (Routledge, 1992) and The Radical in Performance: Between Brecht and Baudrillard (Routledge, 1999), and co-author of Engineers of the Imagination: the Welfare State Handbook (Methuen, 1990).

Abstract:
Part XII of the Companies Act 1985 requires “charges” granted by companies (and also limited liability partnerships) to be registered. This requirement is additional to the requirements of general law about the creation of security rights. For example, if a company grants a security over land, the security must be registered twice, once (under general law) in the Land Register, and a second time as a “company charge”. Part XII contains two sets of rules, one for England and Wales, and one for Scotland, the latter being largely a copy of the former. The Scottish provisions have hitherto never been closely analysed. The present article attempts to do so. The conclusion of the analysis is that the provisions are irrational.
