Full textIn education today, a great number of language tests are available. These tests can be divided into different categories according to their features and function: placement tests, acquisition and progress tests, certification tests and aptitude tests. The POSILANG placement test offers many advantages. The test is conceived in accordance with the Common European framework of reference for languages (CEFR). It therefore complies with the majority of the parameters laid down in this official document and adheres to an action-oriented approach. POSILANG also benefits from being free of charge, readily available, reliable, interactive and authentic. The latter is achieved by using language taken from real life situations for the conception of items. The test has been designed for local use on the campus of Bordeaux University and takes into account the specificities of this environment. Its aim is to assess the competence level of secondary school leavers as they enter the higher education system. POSILANG is able not only to assess the overall language level of participants, but also the level in three separate areas of competence. It has a diagnostic function centered on pinpointing the weaknesses of students. The placement of students according to the different areas of competence enables teachers to form student groups with similar language levels, so as to address the specific instructional needs identified by the test

Full textIn most cases, the doctrine rationale implementing systematic interim relief to administrative decisions consists in identifying some relevant lines of precedents. The fact that the requirements to obtain an award are indeterminate is felt as in the way of conceptual breakthroughs that require thinking in generic terms and not focussing on specific cases. But in essence, the conceptual approach boils down to a methodological issue. Facing a reform of the same magnitude as enacted on June 30th 2000 that substituted the interim injunction to the stay of execution and rephrased its conditions of award, it may be felt necessary to define the new parlance once and for all. To that effect, we learn from dialectics that any legal concept can be defined on the basis of the purpose for which it was contrived. Therefore, language is a conceptual tool for the interim relief on the one hand, and of the judge's role on the other hand. So much so that instead of blocking conceptualization, indeterminate concepts are altogether a requirement to be met for their permanent adaptation and, at the same time, a methodological tool for the court. Furthermore, in the ongoing exchange that develops with the doctrine, the language is a tool for the court to win back the legitimacy that was put into question due to the inefficiency of the former stay of execution' procedure

Full textProcedural texts play an important part in daily life and yet, studies in this domain are lacking. It is posited that a better knowledge of how they work would help people to write them better. Work on procedural texts is generally done at the crossroads of several disciplines: English for Specific Purposes, Corpus Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and Genre Analysis.Starting with the state of the art on procedural texts, a study of the organizational and linguistic levels of texts compiled in several corpora composed of cooking recipes (considered as the reference), gaine mies, science lab protocols user's guides and safety instructions is carried out. These are then compared with one another in the third part. The aim o: this research is to determine which procedural microgenres are the most prototypical and to establish if the specialised or the non-specialised nature of the text has an influence on its degree of prototypicality. This entails the creation of a scale of prototypicality which takes into account the presence, or absence, of protypical features such as a preponderance of imperative verb forms, the frequency of ellipsis, the length of the texts and of their sentences, the adherence to chronological order, the presence of explanations, a two-part structure (elements used and procedural part) and how the mind processes this sort of text

Full textThe aim of the work reported here was to transfer knowledge acquired in the field of psycholinguistics to the domain of technical writing and, in particular, to that of writing instructions. Several studies carried out in natural situations and in laboratory suggested theorical research and applications. A preliminary observation allowed to apprehend users'behaviors when dealing with procedural documents. Furthermore, three studies were carried out to investigate the effects of different instructional formats on how users processed instructional documents. In the first experiment, seven formats of instructions were tested with two groups of adults at two levels of education (high vs. Low levels of schooling). The second experiment assessed the effects of an advanced organizer on the elaboration of a representation and a control activities during the execution of instructions. The third experiment explored users' representations induced by processing textual or graphic instructions. These investigations allowed to developp a procedural model of processing instructions aimed at helping technical writers to design procedural documents. This "user-model" helped to improve markedly the quality of documents, facilitated searching, and lead to a greater understanding of the instructions

Full textThis work is a contribution to the field of linguistics of written language. Our study aims at describing the processes of acquisition of written gender marks in french among the 8 to 11 year old children. Our corpus is made of words found in children's written works and explanations on their spelling collected in spontaneous interviews. This work differs from previous studies on spelling impairs by this double methodological choice: i) morphography studied in written essays ; and ii) children considered as able to produce metalinguistic analysis. This choice of method prooves to be essential to understand the processes of spelling acquisition (1st part). It comes out that children build up their own understanding of written marks. Their + awareness of written gender ; (2nd part) seems to be closely linked to the functionning of this category as well as its written functionning in french. As a matter of fact, written gender relies on the two basic principles which rule the written systems (phonography and semiography). These principles allow to understand the underlying processes in children written productions. The study leads to a possible frame for the acquisition of written gender marks, inspired by the constructivist model: a first partially unconscious knowledge system is replaced by a second one where identification of syntactic classes and relations appears to be crucial, and where language subjectivity and the connection with sex gender are somehow mingled (3 rd part). Thus ontogenesis sheds some light on some pecularities of the linguistic notion of gender which appears to be not so simple and clear

Full textCriminal analysis is a discipline that supports investigations practiced within the National Gendarmerie. It is based on the use of the documents compiled in the judicial procedure file (witness interviews, search warrants, expert reports, phone and bank data, etc.) to synthesize the information collected and to propose a new understanding of the facts examined. While criminal analysis uses data visualization software (i. e. IBM Analyst’s Notebook) to display the hypotheses formulated, the digital and textual management of the file documents is entirely manual. However, criminal analysis relies on entities to formalize its practice. The presentation of the research context details the practice of criminal analysis as well as the constitution of judicial procedure files as textual corpora. We then propose perspectives for the adaptation of natural language processing(NLP) and information extraction methods to the case study, including a comparison of the concepts of entity in criminal analysis and named entity in NLP. This comparison is done on the conceptual and linguistic plans. A first approach to the detection of entities in witness interviews is presented. Finally, since textual genre is a parameter to be taken into account when applying automatic processing to text, we develop a structure of the « legal » textual genre into discourse, genres, and sub-genres through a textometric study aimed at characterizing different types of texts (including witness interviews) produced by the field of justice

Full textThe aim of this research is to explain how children of different ages acquire linguistic phenomena which are supposed to be complex in Romanian as a mother-tongue language. In this research, we selected the following complex phenomena:- Complex verbs;- Non-restrictive and restrictive relative clauses;- Complex predication with two locative and two temporal complements.- Complex predication by reduction of two simple predications and- Predication with three operator verbsTo describe the learning path of children, we described the reformulation procedures that children aged 6, 8 and 10 follow when they reproduce a story that has just been read to them. After analyzing the reformulation procedures for each age group, we came to the following conclusions:At 6 years:- children tend to erase or simplify complex verbs. These complex verbs are replaced by lexically simpler and more frequent verbs.- they often reproduce source phrases by partial and incomplete reformulations.- they tend to reformulate relative clauses by simple phrases with a single predicate or erase information of complex phrases (non-restrictive and restrictive relatives). At this age, children use simple, more frequent or less restrained vocabulary. At 8 years:- children increasingly diversify their reformulation procedures: repetition, semantic and functional paraphrasing and restructuring. However, the reformulation procedure which is widely used is the incomplete analytical definitional paraphrase which confirms the fact that complex verbs constitute a complex phenomenon.- At this age, the number of reformulated non-restrictive clauses is significantly high as compared to that of children at the age of 6 year. They diversify much more paraphrastic reformulation procedures. Some reformulations maintain the same degree of complexity as the source phrases (synthesizing information). However, children at this age still have difficulties reformulating restrictive relative clauses that contains a metaphor or reformulating a complex predication composed of two elementary predications. At 10 years:- children reformulate non-restrictive phrases without any difficulties. They produce a high number of reformulations by semantic paraphrasing as compared to younger children. It is also at this age that they increasingly complexify the source phrase (the case of complete analytical definitional reformulation and restructuring of the two predications are good examples).- At this age, children have not yet acquired phrases with high degree of syntactic and semantic complexity such as the restrictive relative clauses with a metaphor, which confirms the hypothesis that this phenomenon is complex

Full textThis research examines highly multimodal activities constituting a video project conducted in collaboration with home helpers, in the context of adult language training. The activities under study focus on explaining procedures carried out in various situations, weakly or heavily instrumented (spontaneous group oral, simulation, camera-facing shooting) and participate in the process of appropriation of the foreign language by placing the learner in an expert role. Participant observations in an ethnographic approach, supported by audiovisual recordings of these activities, brought together a corpus that we organized into two main collections. They are based primarily on these data. They deal with the dynamics of multi-sensory, situated actions and interactions (verbal actions, gestures, object manipulations, body placements, movements), as they were developed by the participants. They also discuss the Goffmanian notions of framework, position, commitment and reiteration. This ecological approach to human activity, relatively recent in language science, highlights the multimodality of the resources deployed in those educational situations, and shows their connection with the environment in its social and material dimensions

Full textThis research is based on the new hypothesis on acquisition: in the course of the acquisition of their mother tongue, children produce their own utterances from previously heard utterances using transformations called “reformulations”. It consists of the analysis of the reformulation procedures and of some complex phenomena in children aged 8 and 10 years-old’s oral productions in English as a mother tongue (EMT) and of Analysis of the reformulation procedures in teenagers’ oral productions in French as a foreign language after approximately 4 to 5 years of learning. At 8 years-old in EMT, children tend to simplify the source utterances. At 10 years-old, children use a larger number of different kinds of reformulation procedures and they use more complex reformulation procedures. As at 8 years-old, 10-year-old children still tend to simplify some complex verbs. This also shows that these verbs are indeed complex. Lastly, children reformulate more often the source relative clauses with relative clauses than 8-year-old children. Towards 17 years-old and after 4 to 5 years of learning French as a foreign language (FFL), mastering the mother tongue would be a determinant factor in the acquisition of FFL: due to the syntactic proximity between the English and the French languages and to their age, teenagers produce paraphrases that are more complex. Teenagers tend to simplify source utterances when the source utterance is complex at a lexical and syntactical level, as do the children with English as a mother tongue

Sleep is a complex and active state of the brain, associated with essential functional changes
[1]. Accumulated evidence in the adult population indicates that sleep participates in the
consolidation of declarative (i.e. memory for facts and episodes) and procedural (i.e. skills
and habits) memory, allowing novel information to be integrated for the long term in cerebral
networks [2]. Whether sleep supports memory consolidation in children likewise and to the
same extent than in adults remains disputed. In this framework, I have developed
experiments aimed at investigating sleep-dependent consolidation processes both in children
and adults, using behavioral and neurophysiological techniques (magneto-encephalography
[MEG]; electro-encephalography [EEG]; functional magnetic resonance imaging [fMRI]). To
sum up, researches conducted during my PhD thesis have contributed to start unraveling
neurophysiological mechanisms participating in sleep-dependent consolidation processes.
On the one hand, I report that despite a lack of detectable behavioral differences, posttraining
sleep plays a role in reshaping the cerebral networks subtending implicit motor
sequence learning in adults [3]. I also showed using a motor adaptation task [4] that sleep
contributes to the consolidation of procedural memory in children [5]. On the other hand, I
have evidenced neuromagnetic correlates of learning novel semantic representations in
children [6-7], and is currently finalizing the analysis of the effect of a post-training nap on the
consolidation of these representations. Finally, I showed in epileptic children that interictal
epileptic discharges (IED) during sleep impairs declarative memory consolidation processes
[8-9], and that this phenomenon is reversible upon pharmacological treatment suppressing
IED. Altogether, these findings advocate the need to explore further memory consolidation
and its neurophysiological basis in children, both healthy and suffering from various brain
pathologies [10].

Full textThis thesis focuses on the academic writing problems encountered by advanced-level foreign students, and in particular the phenomena of grammatical errors that are not consistent with the linguistic level of learners related to the adaptation of their scriptural competence. This work is part of a plural perspective based on the principle of Complex Dynamic Systems. The theme is therefore addressed by three sociopsychological, (2) cognitive and (3) psychosocial studies that allow us to comprehend holistically the processes involved in the appropriation of academic scriptural practices. On the one hand, this thesis intends to contribute to the comprehension of the linguistic difficulties of the students by considering them as correlative of the particular constraints of the university discourses to produce with the aim, on the other hand, to engage reflections on the formation and the accompaniment of learners
Bourgeois, Florent. "Système de Mesure Mobile Adaptif Qualifié." Thesis, Mulhouse, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018MULH8953/document.
Full textMobile devices offer measuring capabilities using embedded or connected sensors. They are more and more used in measuring processes. They are critical because the performed measurements must be reliable because possibly used in rigorous context. Despite a real demand, there are relatively few applications assisting users with their measuring processes that use those sensors. Such assistant should propose methods to visualise and to compute measuring procedures while using communication functions to handle connected sensors or to generate reports. Such rarity of applications arises because of the knowledges required to define correct measuring procedures. Those knowledges are brought by metrology and measurement theory and are rarely found in software development teams. Moreover, every user has specific measuring activities depending on his field of work. That implies many quality applications developments which could request expert certification. These premises bring the research question the presented works answer : What approach enables the conception of applications suitable to specific measurement procedures considering that the measurement procedures could be configured by the final user. The presented works propose a platform for the development of measuring assistant applications. The platform ensure the conformity of measuring processes without involving metrology experts. It is built upon metrology, model driven engineering and first order logic concepts. A study of metrology enables to show the need of applications measuring process expert evaluation. This evaluation encompasses terms and rules that ensure the process integrity and coherence. A conceptual model of the metrology domain is proposed. That model is then employed in the development process of applications. It is encoded into a first order logic knowledge scheme of the metrology concepts. That scheme enables to verify that metrology constraints holds in a given measuring process. The verification is performed by confronting measuring processes to the knowledge scheme in the form of requests. Those requests are described with a request language proposed by the scheme. Measuring assistant applications require to propose to the user a measuring process that sequences measuring activities. This implies to describe a measuring process, and also to define interactive interfaces and sequencing mechanism. An application editor is proposed. That editor uses a domain specific language dedicated to the description of measuring assistant applications. The language is built upon concepts, formalisms and tools proposed by the metamodeling environment : Diagrammatic Predicat Framework (DPF). The language encompasses syntactical constraints that prevent construction errors on the software level while reducing the semantical gap between the software architect using it and a potential metrology expert. Then, mobile platforms need to execute a behaviour conforming to the editor described one. An implementation modelling language is proposed. This language enables to describe measuring procedures as sequences of activities. Activities imply to measure, compute and present values. Quantities are all abstracted by numerical values. This eases their computation and the use of sensors. The implementation model is made up of software agents. A mobile application is also proposed. The application is built upon a framework of agents, an agent network composer and a runtime system. The application is able to consider an implementation model and to build the corresponding agent network in order to propose a behaviour matching the end users needs. This enables to answer to any user needs, considering he can access to the implementation model, without requiring to download several applications

Full textIn this dissertation I offer a critical examination of Jurgen Habermas’s political philosophy while questioning the conception of discourse which it is grounded in. From his first texts on the “public space” to the legal and political theory elaborated in Law and Democracy, Habermas explores the intuition that it is through a certain practice of argumentative discourse that spaces of communication, deliberation and decision are formed, the vitality of which is crucial to a truly “radical” democracy. The theory of discourse underpinning his political thought must hence be reconstructed at the different levels it operates on, including the practice of ordinary language through which we communicate in everyday life, the discourse we apply as political subjects when we claim rights in the public space, and the discourse which enables us to form arguments from a moral point of view when principles of justice need to be determined. My thesis supports the idea that fundamental norms of discourse, which Habermas establishes on a quasi-transcendental level, must be confronted to the heteronomy of material conditions of discourse. The materialist-derived philosophy which Horkheimer strove to reconstruct in the 1930s paves the way for this analysis. I therefore reconstitute the debate within the Frankfurt School on the question of how Marx’s historical materialism should be interpreted
