Abstract:

Thesis, Lille 3, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014LIL30025/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of our work is to consider and study dance as a sense-Building activity. Sense is a complex notion, which has been variously conceptualized in the course of dance history but merely investigated. In order to do so, we build upon the works of Suzanne Langer, a 20th century American philosopher whose writings explore the concept of “symbol”. She elaborated an original thought about dance and came up with concepts that allowed her to circumscribe the symbolic processes happening during the non-Discursive practices, in art especially. Rather than looking at dance from an ontological point of view or as a category that gathers certain types of moves, we choose to study it as something that may appear on an intermittent basis. Watching dance this way makes it possible for us to give an account of the possibility of its emergence in any kind of movement, whether it happens in the course of artistic dance, festal dance, mime, cinema, rite or within a digital creation. This decision not to reduce a priori the field of study allows us to draw a posteriori a clear distinction between dance and any other kind of moves or bodily practices. Indeed, our work tends to claim the fundamental specificity of dance, whatever environments, moments or bodies in or during which it occurs – a specificity that may be explained by its unique symbolic processes and the meanings or senses it may build or give birth to

Abstract:
Abstract Precipitation kinetics were investigated in select Fe, Ni, and Al alloys using a CALPHAD based precipitation model based on Langer-Schwartz theory. Thermodynamic and kinetic data are taken from commercially available CALPHAD software, but reliable interfacial energy data for precipitates needed for the calculations is often lacking. While models exist to approximate these interfacial energies, this study has focused on deriving more reliable estimates by comparison with experimental data. By performing simulations with thermal histories, nucleation sites, and precipitate morphologies that closely replicate experimental data found in literature, the interfacial energies were optimized until volume fraction and mean radius values closely matched the published data. Using this technique, interfacial energy values have been determined for carbides in Grade 22 low alloy steels, delta phase in Ni 625 and 718, SPhase in Al 2024, and Q’ and β’’ in Al 6111, and can be used for future predictive precipitation simulations.

Full text
Abstract:
Fatigue of Niobium stabilized austenitic stainless steel (X6CrNiNb1810mod) was studied using specimens extracted from a solution annealed and quenched φ360×32 mm pipe, which fulfils all the German KTA material requirements for primary components in BWR and PWR. An experimental strain life fatigue curve was determined as a base line for component specific evaluations and for comparison with the Langer and Chopra curves, which are the basis of the ASME III and NRC RG 1.207 design criteria. Stress strain responses in strain controlled tests were carefully measured to clarify the fatigue mechanisms. In the LCF regime our data lie within a common scatter band between the Langer and Chopra curves. When approaching HCF regime (> 100 000 cycles), the curves deviate and Chopra curve becomes highly conservative for this material. Strain controlled fatigue tests ranging to 10 million cycles in RT air indicated an endurance limit behavior for this alloy.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper compares the various models used to describe the fatigue behavior of Austenitic Stainless Steels. This was done for newly produced GE/EDF fatigue results and for hundreds of other data points gleaned from the literature. This comparison was made for several subsets of the data, comprising: 304 and/or 316SS, below and/or above 100°C, loading by tensile and/or bending, and for tests run in air and/or various reactor water environments. Most approaches gave reasonable correlations in the low cycle regime, but some were better than others, depending upon the subset considered. Of most critical concern was the predicted endurance limit. The Langer model used a non-conservative (too high) endurance limit. Better agreement was found for the models produced by ANL, Jaske and O’Donnell, Tsutsumi, Higuchi and Leax. These models are statistically compared by subset.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper distinguishes between FSRFs that are used for two different purposes. One is to serve as a guideline for an initial estimate of the fatigue strength of a welded joint. That is the purpose of the FSRFs that are given in the ASME B&PV Code and various accompanying documents. If that estimate renders the fatigue strength inadequate, an FSRF can be sought that is limited to the joint under consideration. The paper shows how such FSRFs can be determined from fatigue test data. In order to make it possible to read the allowable cycles from the same design fatigue curve as that used for the FSRFs of the guidelines, a Langer curve [defined by equation (2) in the paper] is used to curve fit the data. The appropriate FSRF is obtained by minimizing the standard deviation between this curve and the data. The procedure is illustrated for girth butt-welded pipes. The illustration shows that for the data used in the analysis, a constant FSRF is applicable to less than one million cycles but not to the high-cycle regime.

Abstract:
Digital Promise and Langer Research Associates developed the “Survey of Student Perceptions of Remote Teaching and Learning” to capture the experiences of undergraduates taking courses that transitioned to online instruction in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey explores the nature of college courses as they were taught during the COVID-19 outbreak, the pervasiveness of various challenges undergraduates faced after the transition to remote instruction, and course features associated with higher levels of student satisfaction. Data analyses compared experiences of students from low-income, underrepresented, or rural backgrounds to those of students with none of these characteristics. This survey was administered in the spring of 2020 to a random national sample of 1,008 undergraduates, age 18 and older, who were taking college courses for credit that included in-person class sessions when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and had to finish the course by learning at a distance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Edge lane roads (ELRs), also known as advisory bike lanes or advisory shoulders, are a type of shared street where two-way motor vehicle (MV) traffic shares a single center lane, and edge lanes on either side are preferentially reserved for vulnerable road users (VRUs). This work comprises a literature review, an investigation of ELRs’ operational characteristics and potential road user interactions via simulation, and a study of crash data from existing American and Australian ELRs. The simulation evaluated the impact of various factors (e.g., speed, volume, directional split, etc.) on ELR operation. Results lay the foundation for a siting criterion. Current American siting guidance relies only upon daily traffic volume and speed—an approach that inaccurately models an ELR’s safety. To evaluate the safety of existing ELRs, crash data were collected from ELR installations in the US and Australia. For US installations, Empirical Bayes (EB) analysis resulted in an aggregate CMF of .56 for 11 installations observed over 8 years while serving more than 60 million vehicle trips. The data from the Australian State of Queensland involved rural one-lane, low-volume, higher-speed roads, functionally equivalent to ELRs. As motor vehicle volume grows, these roads are widened to two-lane facilities. While the authors observed low mean crash rates on the one-lane roads, analysis of recently converted (from one-lane to two-lane) facilities showed that several experienced fewer crashes than expected after conversion to two-lane roads.
