Vismara, Meghan Lynn. "Identity and Language Use in Adolescent Latina/o Literature." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/82523.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how characters in adolescent Latina/o literature use and reflect on both English and Spanish languages, bilingualism and how language use informs a character’s identity. In this thesis a particular emphasis is placed on code switching as a literary device in adolescent Latina/o literature. Investigations on code switching point to this, that many authors use code switching as a way for authors and characters to show the difficulties of living between two cultures. I examined the works of three accomplished authors of Latina/o adolescent in this investigation: Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (2012), Julia Álvarez’s Before We Were Free (2002) and the Tía Lola Series (2009), and Pam Muñoz Ryan’s Esperanza Rising (2004) and Echo (2015). The struggle to find one’s identity as an immigrant in the United States can emotionally compare to the struggle of an adolescent trying to balance their struggles of identity and this similarity of identity definition can be seen in all of these works. I argue that these authors use code switching and discussions on bilingualism as a device that helps articulate the exploration of the protagonist's search for identity into adulthood. Code switching and bilingualism are used to juxtapose the childhood and adult stages of the characters. These serve as ruptural elements that defy the generation of the parents and the cultural expectations. Code switching further serves as a mechanism through which protagonists reject and accept aspects of their identity development, from homosexuality to economic status. In a parallel way, I explore the importance of adolescent Latina/o literature as a referential axis for Latina/o youth in their process of development. This genre plays a role in development by showing strong, non-stereotypical characters who can help shape Latina/o identity for the next generation in the United States. Because adolescence is the stage in life where the individual goes through a time of questioning identity and development, this thesis shows that adolescent Latina/o literature may be best suited to show the process of growing up as compared to mainstream adolescent literature and gives a concrete metaphor for the challenges that many adolescents face.

Abstract:
The core of this essay is the book "The God of Small Things" written by the Indian novelist Arundhati Roy. The strong power of both caste systems or traditional principles and politics is the starting-point of this essay. For this reason, as the center of this tale is a Hindu family of high caste, and consequently very traditional, the identity of the women in the book are of great interest. The women in "The God of Small Things" are very fascinating not only for the reason that they are strongly influenced by their life stories, but even more for the influence their actions and identities have on their children. Of course, none of them can be judged for the shape of their identity, as they all are a merger of culture, religion and politics. More exactly, the divided identities of these women are discussed in relation to firstly their Hindu identity acquired by their society and traditions, and secondly their colonial/post-colonial identity nearly imposed upon them by the colonial forces. In this essay I discuss and analyse three generations of women, a total of four characters. In addition, two other characters are used in order to illustrate the differences that women from the colonizing country (Great Britain) hold in contrast to women from the colonized country (India).

Villarreal, Ballesteros Ana Cecilia. "PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF IMAGINED COMMUNITIES IN AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE MAJOR IN MEXICO." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195059.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent work has shown the importance of identity in language learning and how the desire to belong to an imagined community drives individuals to invest in their learning (Norton, 2000). This work has documented that a mismatch between students' imagined community and the community envisioned by the teacher can have negative outcomes on students' learning trajectories. Other research has explored how institutional policies and their linked educational practices reflect differences in the imagined communities each institution sees their students potentially joining in the future (Kanno, 2003) and how reading materials and the discourses reflected in them can affect learners' visions of themselves(Pavlenko, 2003). However few studies have tried to document how an `imagined community' might be collectively constructed for others through a complex interaction of social and cultural structures, circulating discourses, institutional discourses, educational practices, group dynamics and personal histories that produce visions of potential identities (I) and their respective imagined communities (IC's) in which newcomers get socialized. There is a gap in current research on how `imagined communities' and `identities' for second language learners get constructed, circulated and made available to learners within institutional contexts.Through this qualitative study involving questionnaires and autobiographical research I studied the construction of imagined communities in an English language major in Mexico. I explored how professional identities and their related imagined communities are collectively constructed and made available to students in order to understand how institutions, programs administrators and faculty members could enhance the spread of successful professional identities and inspire/stimulate L2 speakers in their educational and professional trajectories.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT THE ROLE OF LANGUAGE IN THE FORMATION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY IN POST-SOVIET KAZAKHSTAN DOgANAKSOY, ipek M.Sc., Department of Eurasian Studies Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. AySegü
l Aydingü
n September 2008, 114 Pages The aim of the thesis is to analyze the relationship between language and the formation of national identity in post-Soviet Kazakhstan. The launch of language policies in the Republic of Kazakhstan right after the break up of the Soviet Union aim to promote the status of Kazakh language as well as to support its use in state and public life spheres as a means of communication and to foster the national consciousness among the public. Although, official efforts combined with the discourses of the political elites aim to promote the status of the Kazakh language, various factors such as, the demographic structure, the quality of the Kazakh language and the rural and urban dichotomy, hindered the effective enforcement of these policies. The main argument of the thesis is that due to the existing factors which are mentioned above the usage of Kazakh language by the people of Kazakhstan as a means of communication in the short-run does not seem to be attainable. The Kazakh language, within the process of national identity formation, acts and would remain to act as a symbolic tool.

Jellie, Maria. "The Formation of Pākehā Identity in Relation to Te Reo Māori and Te Ao Māori." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Maori and Indigenous Studies, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/961.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the experiences of European New Zealanders who have learnt te reo Māori and how through their learning they have gained a better understanding of what it means to be Pākehā in New Zealand. This thesis looks at the reasons why European New Zealanders want to learn te reo Māori (chapter 5); experiences from learning te reo Māori and being involved with Māori culture within both te ao Māori and te ao Pākehā are also discussed (chapter 6). The concept of a Pākehā identity, one that involves a relationship with te ao Māori is also examined (chapter 7). The use of the term Pākehā by European New Zealanders is a rather recent phenomenon. The thesis endeavours to discover differences between those European New Zealanders who do and do not identify with the term 'Pākehā'. Which New Zealanders identify with the term 'Pākehā', and the examination of who finds the term derogatory is also discussed (chapter 4). Since European contact with Māori, fluency in te reo Māori in New Zealand has dramatically declined. As a background to the research undertaken here, this study also reviews the history of te reo Māori since European contact and the revitalisation efforts made by Māori to maintain the language. The exploration of the idea that te reo Māori can be the basis of a new national identity that all New Zealanders can share is also discussed (Chapter 2). This chapter also explores the origin and meaning of the term Pākehā, and the creation of popular usage of the term among European New Zealanders.

Abstract:
The main purpose of our research was to explore the relation between the creative processes and the identity construction. The creative act is personal, subjective an intimate. «Action is to be found at the heart of subjectivity because it has the power of relating aspirations, representations, as well as values and the sense of ability» (Costalat-Founeau, 2008). Our research leans on the theoretical basis of ego-ecology (Zavalloni & Louis-Guérin, 1984; Zavalloni, 2007) which highlights the complexity of the exchanges contributing to the construction of sense and way of being and acting at the very core of identity dynamics. This approach sees the individual on a holistic way; it conceives identity as an internal environment and focuses on the analysis of social representations built as imaged metaphors of reality. The subject as a transactional and dialogical agent is a discursive subject. It's with and in the speech that ego-ecology and the IMIS method try to find a relation between internal and external environment elements by finding identity words that are used as ontological regulators of the identity dynamic and any creative project. The creative project starts and boosts itself in the subject's subjectivity preferring the expression of emotions, values, aspirations, motivations and abilities that take part of a productive power focused on internal and external coherence. We made this exploratory study on a longitudinal way using as subjects fashion design students during three years

Xiang, Li. "Survive or Thrive: a Mixed Method Study of Visiting Chinese Language Teachers' Identity Formation in the U.S. Classrooms." PDXScholar, 2017. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3618.

Abstract:
In recent years in the United States, an increasing number of people are learning Mandarin, the dominant Chinese language in China. Because of the shortage of Mandarin teachers, many visiting teachers from China with Chinese educational background are teaching Mandarin in the U.S. schools. In the U.S. classrooms, these teachers are challenged to adapt to a new setting. This experience can lead them to changing their teaching identity, that is, their basic beliefs, attitudes and practices about teaching. Understanding how Chinese teachers may form a new teaching identity in the U.S. context serves to inform future professional development activities designed to increase their competence as teachers in U.S. classrooms. The purpose of this study was to describe and explain what is visiting Chinese language teachers' identity and how the identity changes might take place when they teach Mandarin in U.S. classrooms. The broader goal is to find ways to encourage Chinese language teaching competency in the U.S. classrooms and to foster cross-cultural communication. In this study, I used mixed methods research to study 14 visiting Chinese language teachers with Chinese educational background to find out how they perceive their teaching and how they teach in the U.S. classrooms. My findings were: (a) visiting Chinese language teachers changed their teaching attitudes, beliefs, and teaching practice in U.S. classroom; (b) teachers with a high teaching identity on Teaching Identity Survey maintained a high level of teaching identity after four months of teaching in U.S. classrooms; and, (c) visiting Chinese language teachers who changed their teaching identity engaged in critical reflections on their teaching practice, and learned from both Chinese and U.S. teachers. To have a positive impact on Chinese language teachers' identity and increase the likelihood of success, two implications are evident. First, Chinese language teachers could benefit from the professional development program with a focus on cultural differences and U.S. classroom management strategies. Second, U.S. schools and Chinese language programs need to create opportunities for teachers to learn from each other and build a professional community.

Abstract:
The present study investigates the impact of a school play on the identity formation of six English as a Second Language (ESL) learners attending a local EMI secondary school. Data pertaining to students’ perception of their participation in the school play was collected through semi-structured interviews and diary entries over a period of four months. The findings show all participants generally view the group experience and the social interaction in the school play community as the major factors boosting their sense of belonging and engagement with the community at large. A number of generally positive (and evolving) multiple identities have been identified in the study as a result of the of social, cultural and symbolic capital accumulated by acquiring the English speaking proficiency needed on the stage. However, there is a slight difference between participants who assume a more major role and those who take up a minor role in regard to their level of engagement in the school play. Some informants acknowledge the difficulty in gaining a legitimate membership in the school play. Nevertheless, the general findings all point to the view that the school play supports the participants in the process of becoming a member of an ESL Community of Practice.

Abstract:
Like most ethnic and multicultural narratives, Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club revolves around the development of an identity in which immigrant experience and all the questions of ethno- cultural identity that attend to it play central roles. The aim of this essay is to investigate the process of identity formation of the second-generation Chinese immigrant daughters who encounter Chinese culture at home while having the immediate experience of living in America, with a focus on the cultural, language and generational gaps that exist between the Chinese mothers and their American- born daughters. This study is guided by a theoretical framework that combines postcolonial theory and a number of established theories of identity construction including the concept of hybrid identity in order to analyze and explore the American-born daughters’ identity creation. Based on this analysis, this paper presents evidence that an identity formation process that involves cultural hybridization has occurred and the outcome of this identity formation is that of a hybrid identity.

Abstract:
This research explores the lived experiences of South Asians college students. This research, through a qualitative study that is rooted in the philosophy of phenomenology, explores the essence South Asians’ identity formation. Qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews with South Asian college students. The data analysis was under a phenomenological lens that centered the lived experiences and the essence of these experiences in the results. Seven themes emerged from this phenomenological study: negotiating bicultural identity, model minority expectations, meaningful impact of religious spaces, understandings of intra-community tensions, racialization of Islamophobia, understandings of South Asian identity and efficacy of Asian American identity. This study’s findings provide a foundation to build a more expansive framework for understanding the identity formation of South Asians.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines civilian mobilization amidst the Donbas war in Ukraine and the identity formation processes that it engendered. It focuses on ordinary residents of the frontline regions who voluntarily got together to address the humanitarian and military consequences of war in the absence of state support. It explores the micro-level dynamics of mobilization, particularly the demographic profile of volunteers, their motivations to join and their pathways to engagement. In so doing, it provides an account of how ordinary residents of seemingly passive regions became active in times of crisis. I use the concept of “identity formation” to analyze how war and war engagement have impacted citizen, gender, national and language identities of those active at the rear. The outbreak of war shattered habitual ways of thinking and acting and brought about new modes of belonging and meaning making for war volunteers. My findings suggest that successful volunteer efforts in wartime allowed volunteers to position themselves differently with respect to community, nation, and the state and to articulate new understandings of “good citizenship.” The shifting positioning of volunteers, as the research demonstrates, is inherently linked to the changing citizen regimes in Ukraine and the gendered conceptions of who counts as a legitimate member of the community. By employing ethnographic tools of inquiry, the dissertation provides an ethnographic account of wartime social change “from below” and speaks to larger social and political transformations in wartime using Ukraine as a case study. It does so with attention to the social-political environment within which collective action occurs and in relation to the new types of mobility, socializing and bonding it engenders.

Abstract:

As digital media makes its way into elementary school classrooms, urban school culture moves slowly to join in. The move to integrate new technologies into schools is both enabled and constrained by factors such as the need for students and teachers to be seen as people who are "successful" in both public and social terms. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the complexities for elementary children learning to write in the digital age. I used a case study approach, examining the language choices of eight third and fourth grade students (4 girls and 4 boys) who attended an urban elementary school in a large southeastern city in the United States. I analyzed how the students' language choices contributed to the construction/negotiation of their writer identities and the degree to which these constructs/negotiations were enabled/constrained by what the participants imagined was/not possible from their positions as students while composing with varying technologies. I conclude that it is not only the young writers who imagine what is/not possible from their position as students, it is also those who guide, or "authorize" student writing, including teachers, administrators, and parents. This constructing/negotiating, authorizing/guiding all take place as students seek to maintain membership (textually) within their school world while endeavoring to cultivate new memberships within expanses or publics that coexist alongside their schools. The young writers highlighted in this study, working against from within the school district's accountability and efficiency agenda show that being a "successful" student writer can mean more than their merely reproducing what is expected of them.

Abstract:
In recent decades, EAL populations in schools have continued to increase in UK schools. Between 1997 and 2010, the primary age group increased from 7.8% to 16.8%, while for secondary age it has gone from over 7.3% to 12.3%. Despite increasing EAL populations, the underachievement of EAL students is an ongoing issue; however, in explaining underachievement in EAL groups the focus has often been on within-child attributes, such as language proficiency. The study aimed to explore factors affecting the learner identity of EAL students and implications for support provision. A sequential mixed methods approach was adopted in order to explore the research questions and aims. In Phase 1 a sample of 35 students ages 13 to 16 from 4 secondary schools completed an adapted version of the Self-Description Questionnaire II Short (SDQII-S) version. In Phase 2, two sub-groups were selected from the total sample based on self-reported English language proficiency levels and their views explored through in-depth semi-structured interviews. Interviews were also conducted with EAL co-ordinators from the participating schools. The findings indicated that EAL students' educational experiences are greatly influenced by a number of interlinked factors, such as peers, parents, teachers and perceived English language proficiency, which together, through a social comparison process and intersubjective interactions shaped EAL students' perceptions of themselves as learners. The findings highlighted that in order to better understand the complexity of interacting factors at work in shaping the educational experiences of EAL pupils and their identities as learners, a more holistic and integrated approach was needed in order to extend beyond incorporating language and content, and encompass elements of social integration into all aspects of the school community.

Lochmann, Alexia. "Essays on the economics of migration and cultural identity." Thesis, Paris 1, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020PA01E018.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims at shedding light on the interplay between human mobility, cultural identity and globalization. The critical role that human mobility and cultural identity play in the history of economic development is undeniable, for both phenomena accompany humankind throughout space and time. The questions I answer in this dissertation intend to focus on three aspects of these phenomena, that are at the core of the current public debate. I address these questions using novel data, partly coming from recently digitized historical files in the context of this doctorate. I provide conceptual, historical and theoretical frames for each topic, while relying on rigorous state-of-the-art econometric methods to infer causality. Following an introduction on the economics of migration and diversity, the core of this dissertation comprises three research papers. The first paper evaluates the effects of language training on the economic integration of immigrants; the second highlights the role of cultural identity and economic factors when taking the decision to emigrate, and the third investigates the effects that misleading information can have on the formation of cultural identity

Ahmed, Rabie Abdelmaguid Wael. Thesis, Normandie, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019NORMR037.

Full text
Abstract:
Our philosophy Doctorate "PhD" research aims at highlighting the conditions of the French language teachers in Egypt in terms of the continuing training for oral competency. We aim to understand their difficulties, their needs or even their expectations when it comes to undertaking a training course in oral efficiency. We also try to high light the difficulties teachers face in exercising communication skills with their students in class in public high schools. Our goal is to professionalize their communication skills in order to pass on the results of continuing education programs to their students in classrooms. We do not train just for training but rather to help teachers transfer and pass on their knowledge, cognisance and experiences of French Language Education "FLE" classroom training. This research is built on original and fundamental bases. It starts with the analysis of the difficulties, needs and expectations recognized by Egyptian teachers of FLE then it goes on to set a scientific approach for remedy. The idea of this research is to help the Egyptian teachers of FLE to develop their communication skills professionally according to the new criteria of the Common European Framework of References for Languages, the didactics of FLE, training and teaching profession new theories. The aim is to stimulate the actual linguistic practice of communicative skills through exchange of situations and verbal creation among Egyptian FLE teachers. It is necessary to "realize" the often uncertain promise of French language teachers, most often fully informed of the realities of the language and certain theories, but who, deprived of practice and subject to the general conditions of teaching (student numbers, no motivation, material content, examination), see their role reduced to that of just repeaters. this reform doe snot claim to compensate for the inadequate basic and initial academic training. It aims to build up teachers' confidence, to achieve their autonomy, become able to express themselves easily and perform their mission efficiently giving reinforced image of their study discipline. As such, it places them in a better position to achieve the desirable scenarios of Egyptian pre-university education reform. The age for second language learning should start earlier thus giving the opportunity for extention and diversification of the teaching programs

Abstract:
The aim of this report is to find out what kind of values and attitudes towards today’s multiculturalism that is being reflected in modern fiction. It will also try to find out how those values can affect the reader, and how they conform with the values on the subject which our school is advocating. To answer these questions, I am going to do an ideologically critical analysis of the chosen material. In this case, it consists of 4 books from the series of “LasseMajas Detektivbyrå” written by the author Martin Widmark. The analysis is focusing on the characters with foreign ethnicity and how they are portrayed in the books.  The result of the analysis shows that those characters are portrayed in a stereotypically way in all the books. Although we reach the conclusion that it is not done on purpose with negative values. The author is rather trying to make us pay attention to the multiculturalism from a positive point of view, and show how it can enrich our society. Due to the simplicity of the language and the illustrations as an extra support, his books become easily accessible for many children. This also helps spreading the positive values on to a large group of readers. The values which these books are communicating goes well in agreement with our school. Therefore, the books can be considered as good examples of fiction that can be used in today’s classroom.

Abstract:
The following study examined identity construction and community formation within the comic book fan community on the social media website, Twitter It had three objectives It investigated how comic book fans constructed their respective identities on Twitter, explored how fans came to identify with the comic book community and why it formed, and aimed to discover how the community was maintained and expanded The study applied an ethnographic method that relied on the analysis of dialogue Ten comic book fans (five males, five females) that frequently used Twitter to communicate with other fans were video interviewed It was found that comic book fans constructed their identities using their Twitter biography and profile picture and they all believed they were communicating their true and genuine selves The biography, profile picture, and tweets reinforced the rhetoric of what it meant to be a comic book fan It was this visual and written rhetoric that enabled comic book fans to identify with one another and bring the community into being Without this rhetoric, there is no community The community maintained itself through the continued reinforcement of this rhetoric It expanded itself by bringing comic book fans from different backgrounds, locations, and nationalities together online around a shared interest The study also found that the relationships formed within the community could develop into real friendships, the same caliber of friendship that individuals would normally have with those they knew and met in real life.

Abstract:
Examining the conditions of insertion of allophone medical doctors in migration, with a very partial knowledge of the language used in the field – francophone hospitals in France, this study, suggests a reverse positioning : acquiring / appropriating language while practising in the professional context and not learning it in a decontextualised way, to achieve social integration. Professional competence and especially its recognition are factors that facilitate access to language and to its appropriation through professional integration. This study seeks to cause a change in the attitudes of those working in the field of Language Teaching, Educational Sciences, and Medical Studies, so that account should be taken of what constitutes individuals’profiles (their historicity and knowledge) in the search of a more productive articulation between achievements and learning experiences (academic or professional) to be constructed

Abstract:

This work aims at discussing believes in the (re/de)construction of identity in language teachers in formation process from a Language Licentiate course at Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa. Firstly, we start from the hypothesis that the analysed subjects: Língua e Texto (LT) and Introdução aos Estudos Linguisticos (IEL), both from the first year of the course, are responsible for (de/re)construction of some believes which some students bring with them when we come to the University concerning to what is language, grammar etc, as the subjects give opportunity to make important reflections for their formation. On the other hand, other believes seem to be quite resistent to the formation process. For data gathering in this qualitative basied research, we used four instruments: observations, documental analysis, semi-structured interview and daily records (LÜDKE; ANDRÉ, 1986). The participants of the research were teachers from a Language Licentiate Portuguese/Spanish, Portuguese/ English and Portuguese/France course in formation process. With the research results we concluded that observing teachers in formation process believes allows us to widely discuss their identity (de/re)construction, once we understand identity as being flexible and always in construction, as they are pervaded by new and different experiences which will confront other identities. We also notice that the teachers are strongly influenced by the academic environment, at least theorically, and is responsable for some changes in the believes related to the concepts of language, grammar, and teacher/student roles etc.

Abstract:
Through a sociological approach, this research intends to analyse and better understand the school career of SEGPA students in Reunion Island. Our study mainly focuses on students about to leaving school in 12 different SEGPA. This approach, in terms of process, demonstrates that the personal history and the school career of the students we met cannot be reduced to an individual adventure, but are the result of a comprehensive process whose dynamics are to be found in the combination and interactions of a variety of elements, phenomena and events. Even though the institutional functioning of school guidance influence school destiny, this research shows that school career and the failure of students leaving SEGPA without any qualification are not reducible to the student's personal characteristics or social family context, but is due to a comprehensive process whose interrelated dynamics combine, interact, cumulate and influence each other

Abstract:
The research aims at exploring an alternative approach to a standard-based certification assessment used in teacher training and qualification. The underpinning question of the thesis is the following: can a reflective project approach enhanced by web 2.0 tools and qualitative assessment help develop the professional skills needed by future language teachers when still at university? The empirical research has been conducted with three student classes. The theoretical basis and the operationalisation of the research question have thus emerged as the research was being developed. The gathered corpus is varied (logbooks, professional writings, community blogs, collective interviews). Both the qualitative analysis and computer-aided discourse analysis bring to light marked elements pointing to the relevance of the chosen approach

Abstract:
This study explores the identity development and psychological adjustment of bisexual individuals (n = 122) as compared to homosexual (n = 38) and heterosexual participants (n = 490). Undergraduate students recruited from psychology classes at a large metropolitan university in Florida (67% female, 64% Caucasian) took an online survey for course extra credit. Bisexual and homosexual participants scored higher in identity exploration than the heterosexual participants. Bisexual participants scored significantly higher in psychological symptom severity than heterosexual participants. The three groups were not significantly different in identity commitment nor in identity distress. Female bisexual participants scored more similar to the homosexual participants in identity exploration, while the male bisexual participants were more similar to the heterosexual participants. Among males, bisexual and homosexual participants reported greater psychological symptom severity than heterosexual participants. There were no differences between groups for female participants in regard to symptom severity. This study highlights the need for more research into the psychological correlates of bisexuality as a distinct group from homosexuality, as well as the need to focus on gender as a significant moderator of these relationships.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how biracial and multiracial individuals experience racial identity formation in Sweden. An investigation was conducted into their childhood and upbringing to explore how these experiences shape the way that their identity is formed. To arrive at the results of this dissertation, six individuals who self-identify themselves as Black biracial Swedes where recruited to participate in the data collection process. This mean that this research has used primary tools such as semi-structured interviews to collect data from the participants. This study has used two contemporary positive theories of biracial and multiracial identity formation which are Poston’s Biracial identity model and Roots resolution for resolving otherness. Within these two theoretical frameworks, the research question and aim will be answered through analysis of the respondents. Themes that were used to analyse the interviewees responses where alienation from racial identity, picking a side, language as identity and, familiar support and negative experiences. The results finding shows that most interviewees experience a challenge in the process of identifying themselves with a specific racial group leading to a development of a gap in the process of self- identification.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Objective: To understand how adolescent social media use is impacting on their identity formation and their developing self-esteem. The degree of emotional investment in the sites, and what motivations underlie discreet social media activities. It also aims to investigate adolescent responses to online feedback and their coping strategies in relation to the feedback. Method: in-depth interviews with 15 white British adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years (9, female, 6 males) consisting of four single sex friendships groups, were thematically analysed. Each group took part in a facilitated focus group, and an unaccompanied focus group. These were followed by an individual interview with the lead researcher. Results: Five key themes were identified: investment, feelings evoked by social media, motivations, observations of social media rules and cultures, and strategies to manage feelings evoked by social media use. Conclusion: while social media is providing an important new context for identity formation, it may be placing added pressures on adolescents’ developmental tasks. Digital youth fear receiving critical feedback online, due to the potential for experiences of shame to be projected widely. They are highly attuned to the quantifiable feedback they receive online and feel pressured to be effortful in their social media activity, which could impact negatively on adolescents’ ability to develop a coherent and stable self (Erikson, 1968) and psychological wellbeing, particularly for those with pre-existing mental health difficulties. A curious and non-judgemental approach to understanding how adolescents are using social media, is necessary in order to encourage supportive conversations.

Jacobs, Jenny Eva. "Language Ideologies and Identity Construction Among Dual Language Youth." Thesis, Harvard University, 2016. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:27112703.

Full text
Abstract:
Cross-cultural learning and identity formation are an under-theorized but fundamental aspect of dual language bilingual schools, where heritage speakers and English-only learners of a foreign language are educated together through immersion in both languages (Parkes, Ruth, Anberg-Espinoza & de Jong, 2009; Reyes & Vallone, 2007). Previous research on dual language programs has shown that despite careful program designs to treat each language equally, asymmetries between Spanish and English still play out even in well-implemented programs (Palmer, 2004; Potowski, 2005). Observation of such inequalities at the Espada School, a highly successful Spanish/English dual language school, spurred the current study, which seeks to explore in greater depth the language ideologies held by youth in such a setting. In-depth interviews and group discussions were conducted with six middle school students who had attended the school for eight years. Drawing on Foucauldian discourse analysis and sociocultural linguistics (Bucholtz & Hall, 2005; Willig, 2009), the study sought to answer the following questions: 1) What discourses do bilingual youth at a dual language middle school draw on to talk about Spanish and English, and about speakers of each language? 2) How do they deploy these discourses of language for identity-building and world-building? Three discourses of language were identified. The first, language as utilitarian, emphasizes the functional or practical use of language as a resource or tool. The second, language as internal, constructs language as a skill, proficiency, quality or accomplishment that is located inside the individual person. The last, language as connecting or excluding, treats language as a means of relationship-building and understanding or as leading to division between people. Analysis reveals the ways that these discourses were deployed in different ways by each participant to construct their own identities with respect to their future, their everyday language interactions and their perceptions of the relationship between language and ethnicity. The study contributes to a theoretical understanding of ethnolinguistic and sociocultural identity formation from a youth perspective. Recommendations are also made for dual language educators interested in expanding the discourses of language available to students as one way of countering the lower status of Spanish.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the politics of narrative control, and how it relates to the formation of diasporic consciousness among Turkish migrants in the United States. It asks how Turkish diasporic identity is formed and shaped by discourses that frame Turks, and that interrogate who or what a ‘Turk’ is? This thesis suggests that this process of continual construction and re-construction of diasporic consciousness should be investigated as a matter of competitive identity formation, meaning that there is competition between multiple actors to impose a definition or label on a diasporic group and to achieve broad-based support for that label or definition. This also implies the attribution of specific values, ideas, and political agendas to that group. The thesis examines the roots, motivations and activities of Turkish American activists in Washington DC. Based on an analysis of their political orientations and internal fissures, it focuses on the current political debate over official recognition of the deportations and massacres of Armenians by Ottoman forces as a genocide. It argues that Turkish American activists have coalesced on the defensive around this issue, framing it as a matter critical to the identity of Turks. Their manifold activities to prevent the further institutionalisation of the ‘genocide’ label in American political discourse do not, however, always resonate with the passive majority of Turkish Americans.

Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation reports a study of language variation and identity conducted in Sunderland. The City of Sunderland, in North-east England, is situated about 15 miles to the south of Newcastle. As a result of this proximity to the dominant urban centre in the region, Sunderland people are often identified by outsiders as ‘Geordies’ and their dialect as ‘Geordie’. Even existing accounts of dialect variation in North-east England have often subsumed Wearside into Tyneside. Such representations of Sunderland, its people and dialect, however, are rather problematic given the deeply-rooted rivalry that exists between the inhabitants of the two localities, which have led to a clear divide between Newcastle and Sunderland in terms of identity. Moreover, folk-linguistic evidence also appears to point to the existence of a linguistic ‘divide’ as well. For the study of the language and identity of the Sunderland community, a corpus of data has been collected using the Survey of Regional English methodology (Llamas 1999). This method enables the quick and efficient elicitation of linguistic and attitudinal data. The population sample consists of 32 native informants from Sunderland who are stratified by age and gender. The five accent variables analysed have been selected by exploring the informants’ perceptions of linguistic difference, with the intention of ascertaining whether their awareness of variation between the two varieties is reflected in their actual linguistic usage. The usage of these variables is investigated across the gender and age groups to identify any evidence of change over time and gendered patterns. Furthermore, this study employs a language ideological framework which enables a locally meaningful account of the identified patterns of variation. This entails a close examination of the local identity and the symbols and ideologies whereby Sunderland people establish themselves as a cohesive community. The findings suggest that there are indeed differences between Newcastle and Sunderland in the usage of the variables identified by the speakers; also, it appears that language usage bears a strong link to the way in which speakers identify with, and position themselves in, the community.

Abstract:
This work looks at the present day situation of Scots language and whether or not there is a link between attitudes towards Scots and nationalism in Scotland. An outline is given of the history of Scots, which was once the most widely used language for administrative as well as literary purposes in Scotland, indicating which factors contributed to its demise. The result of this demise is that today people are very uncertain about the status of Scots and whether to see it as a language or a dialect. An investigation as carried out in Edinburgh to find out to what extent people are familiar with what is meant by Scots language and to see how important it is to the formation of a Scottish identity. The results of this investigation were very interesting as they showed a link between people's knowledge about the concept of Scots language and their political opinions on the Constitutional Question in Scotland. The results demonstrated a difference in attitude and perception between the group informants classified as being in favour of independence and those in favour of the Union. There was a clear discrepancy between the answers of the Independence group to the first part of the Questionnaire and the third part. This discrepancy was not as noticeable in the answers of the other two groups (Unionists and Devolutionists). It also seems to be linked to the perception of the identity of the concept "Scots language".

Abstract:
If Hob and Nob both read the same newspaper article claiming that a witch has come into town, then the following sentence can be true, even if the article is fabricated and there are no witches:
  1. (1) Hob thinks that a witch has blighted Bob’s mare, and Nob wonders whether she killed Cob’s sow.
This phenomenon is called ‘intentional identity’, and there is no consensus on the semantics of (1) or similar sentences. Intentional identity is related to important, unsettled topics in the philosophy of language (e.g., anaphora, dynamic semantics) and in metaphysics (e.g., fictional and Meinongian objects). Thus, a correct semantic account of intentional identity is desirable. In this thesis, I argue that ‘she’ in (1) is behaving semantically like a traditional definite description, and that the truth of sentences like (1) often requires a certain causal connection between the two subjects. In chapter 1, I explain the difficulty in finding a correct semantic ac- count of intentional identity sentences, and I present new evidence that the phenomenon is broader than previously thought. Chapter 2 explores the idea that (1) involves certain exotic objects—e.g., fictional, Meinongian, or merely possible witches. I show that what I call the ‘causal connection problem’ affects most versions of this idea, and that even the best version is probably incorrect. In chapter 3, I argue that ‘she’ in (1) is not being bound dynamically, and that the ‘guise theory’ approach suggested by several dy- namic semanticists is unhelpful. Chapter 4 contains my proposed solution. With a broader view of the problem, one can see that ‘she’ is functioning like a traditional incomplete definite description, and that its complete semantic value involves Hob and Nob being causally connected. This solution allows us to avoid an extravagant semantics and ontology.

Abstract:
Tourism is a fast growing phenomenon. As every person has a different motivation to travel new and alternative forms of tourism are continuously developing. Depending on form of tourism and the tourist’s motivation to take on a certain trip, the experience has a smaller or bigger impression on the individual. This study examines what influences volunteer trips can have on identities, focusing on volunteers in the organization WWOOF, World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. To understand the development of identities, theories about identity work have been researched. The material derives from a participant observation and 14 semi-structured interviews that mainly were conducted in Oregon, USA. The analysis of the results reveals four main themes for how the individuals’ identities have changed and what factors that have caused this change. These themes are perceived change, cultural exchange, significance of place, and differences between WWOOFers and other tourists. The study shows that travels, in this case volunteer trips, affect individuals in many ways.
World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms.
