Abstract Action languages are formal models of parts of natural language that are designed to describe effects of actions. Many of these languages can be viewed as high-level notations of answer set programs structured to represent transition systems. However, the form of answer set programs considered in the earlier work is quite limited in comparison with the modern Answer Set Programming (ASP) language, which allows several useful constructs for knowledge representation, such as choice rules, aggregates and abstract constraint atoms. We propose a new action language called BC +, which close

Ever since Aristotle and Plato (The Categories; Cratylus), linguists have considered language to be the pairing of form (sounds or gestures or written strings) and meaning. This is true for all meaningful linguistic units from morphemes, through words, phrases and sentences, to discourse. Generally speaking, semantics is the study of how form and meaning are related. However, semantics is more narrowly construed as excluding those meanings that derive from speaker intensions and psychological states, as well as sociocultural features of the context. Furthermore, the boundary between semantics

Languages combine form and meaning in order to express an infinite number of ideas. Modern linguistics has developed sophisticated methods to probe the formal structure of languages from phonetics to syntax, but the study of meaning remains relatively unexplored. The lack of sophisticated methods to document the semantic structure of languages remains a significant problem for work with endangered languages. Research in semantics is limited by semantic theories that can be traced back to Plato and Aristotle. These theories assume that languages use a universal set of semantic elements to const

Abstract:
AbstractWe introduceBayesian strategies, a new interpretation of probabilistic programs in game semantics. This interpretation can be seen as a refinement of Bayesian networks.Bayesian strategies are based on a new form ofevent structure, with two causal dependency relations respectively modelling control flow and data flow. This gives a graphical representation for probabilistic programs which resembles the concrete representations used in modern implementations of probabilistic programming. From a theoretical viewpoint, Bayesian strategies provide a rich setting for denotational semantics. To demonstrate this we give a model for a general higher-order programming language with recursion, conditional statements, and primitives for sampling from continuous distributions and trace re-weighting. This is significant because Bayesian networks do not easily support higher-order functions or conditionals.

Abstract:
AbstractConcurrent accesses to databases are typically encapsulated in transactions in order to enable isolation from other concurrent computations and resilience to failures. Modern databases provide transactions with various semantics corresponding to different trade-offs between consistency and availability. Since a weaker consistency model provides better performance, an important issue is investigating the weakest level of consistency needed by a given program (to satisfy its specification). As a way of dealing with this issue, we investigate the problem of checking whether a given program has the same set of behaviors when replacing a consistency model with a weaker one. This property known as robustness generally implies that any specification of the program is preserved when weakening the consistency. We focus on the robustness problem for consistency models which are weaker than standard serializability, namely, causal consistency, prefix consistency, and snapshot isolation. We show that checking robustness between these models is polynomial time reducible to a state reachability problem under serializability. We use this reduction to also derive a pragmatic proof technique based on Lipton’s reduction theory that allows to prove programs robust. We have applied our techniques to several challenging applications drawn from the literature of distributed systems and databases.

This chapter begins by discussing the work of Alfred Tarski. In the 1930s, Tarski published two articles that became classics. In “The Concept of Truth in Formalized Languages” (1935) he defined truth for formal languages of logic and mathematics. In “On the Concept of Logical Consequence” (1936) he used that definition to give what is essentially the modern “semantic” (model-theoretic) definition of logical consequence. In addition to their evident significance for logic and metamathematics, these results have come to play an important role in the study of meaning. The chapter then discusses Rudolf Carnap's embrace of truth-theoretic semantics and the semantic approach of Donald Davidson.

Abstract:
Nowadays, as computer systems are expected to be intelligent, techniques that help modern applications to understand human languages are in much demand. Amongst all the techniques, the latent semantic models are the most important. They exploit the latent semantics of lexicons and concepts of human languages and transform them into tractable and machine-understandable numerical representations. Without that, languages are nothing but combinations of meaningless symbols for the machine. To provide such learning representation, embedding models for knowledge graphs have attracted much attention in recent years since they intuitively transform important concepts and entities in human languages into vector representations, and realize relational inferences among them via simple vector calculation. Such novel techniques have effectively resolved a few tasks like knowledge graph completion and link prediction, and show the great potential to be incorporated into more natural language processing (NLP) applications.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the defective paradigms of the reflexive nouns and participles in the Latvian language. In Latvian, the reflexiveness of the nouns and the verbs functions as a complex derivational and inflectional system. In this language, the reflexive verbs, participles, and nouns are formed through the fusion of verbal or noun forms with enclitic accusative form of the reflexive pronoun. Reflexive verbs have full person, tense and mood paradigms whilst reflexive nouns and participles have defective paradigms in Latvian. Although the rationale behind defectiveness of the paradigms of the reflexive nouns and participles are difficult to pinpoint, there are several types of compensation for the defectiveness in the Modern Latvian. These include the use of non-standard forms, the use of corresponding non-reflexive participle and noun forms, and the use of other forms of paradigms in lieu of the missing ones. These alternative paradigms depend however on the syntactic function of the word-form. Some topics discussed herein include: derivation and semantics of reflexive nouns; paradigmatic system of reflexive nouns and participles; and functioning of the paradigms of reflexive nouns and participles.

It specified features of the translation process, taking into account its linguistic and non-linguistic aspects. Particular attention is paid to the role of background knowledge and the correct understanding of the subject situation in the translation process, the stylistic components of modeling text translation systems are emphasized. The article highlights the interpretation of a number of concepts of modern cognitive semantics. The semantic characteristics of metaphorical and phraseological units are investigated. The article discusses the specificity of translation of certain categories of vocabulary, the compatibility of words in the translation process, the features of translation of stable phrases, methods of reproduction of phraseological units, translation of figurative phraseological units, metaphors. Special attention is paid to the expressive transformation of phraseological units and their reflection in translation. Formal-meaningful transformations with a pragmatic component as a change in the form and content of units in the text, text fragments in order to balance the pragmatic impact of translation on its reader (phraseological, figurative, conceptual, axiological, metatextual) play an essential role in modern translation studies. The concept of the communicative purpose of the text, the transfer of the stylistic coloring of words, expressive concretization while translating into the native language, pragmatic adaptation of the text are investigated. Special attention is paid to words expressing specific concepts and to their translation into the native language; historical and extralinguistic factors in the selection of the means of their translation are also stressed in the article.

Abstract:
Deminutive vocabulary is a vivid means of emotional and allegorical expression of a literary text, especially when it comes to Ukrainian folk songs. The need for its further study in terms of word formation, semantics and expressive possibilities in the literary text will clarify the idea of reduction as a word-forming category, the peculiarities of its use in Ukrainian folk songs. High derivational activity of diminutive suffixes in the modern Ukrainian language is a manifestation of the nominative function – the desire to call small objects (rarely – minor phenomena of reality) a derivative with a diminutive formant. With the help of diminutive suffixes the aesthetic function of the word is realized – the desire to give the lexical unit of expression, to introduce into it an additional shade of expression. Diminutives often used in adult language addressed to children, and in children's language. Each group of words of subjective evaluation characterized by certain forms used in the formation of derivatives and express an inexhaustible number of different shades of meaning. Derivational analysis can be complicat by the specific possibilities of context and intonation, as in language and speech there may be an erasure of the basic meaning of the subjective-evaluation token and its transition from one group of words of subjective evaluation to another. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the multi-vector exploration: an attempt to generalize the idea of diminutives as a word-forming category, including typical suffixes with which they are formed, their word-forming meanings and productivity, types of creative bases, and to trace the stylistic role of diminutives on Ukrainian folk songs. The relevance of the proposed exploration determined by the insufficient development of the topic of diminutive derivation in song folklore, the importance and role of diminutives in Ukrainian folk songs. The connection of the researched topic with the general problems of Ukrainian stylistic word formation also seems to be theoretically important and relevant. The aim of the research is to reveal the lexical-semantic and word-forming features of diminutives, as well as their stylistic load in the texts of Ukrainian folk songs. To achieve this goal it is necessary to perform the following research tasks: to outline the theoretical foundations of the study of diminutives as a type of derived words in modern linguistic literature; to characterize the specifics of Ukrainian diminutives; to carry out semantic classification of the considered diminutives; analyze the grammatical and structural properties of diminutives; to determine the stylistic role of diminutives in Ukrainian folk songs. Research methods: the main thing in the work is the descriptive method, with its universal methods of observation, systematization and interpretation of linguistic facts and phenomena. The presentation of the researched material is subject to clear logicization: substantiation of theoretical bases, presentative-analytical presentation of the fact, formulation of the concluding part.

Abstract:
New design methodologies at higher abstraction levels are necessary to deal with the increasing complexity of modern embedded systems. As a consequence, new design paradigms must supersede traditional design methods to bridge the abstraction gap which often exists between specification and implementation. This paper examines several examples which evaluate the applicability of Esterel, a language with well-defined semantics for specification and verification of reactive control systems. Implementation size, performance and design effort were selected as measures to assess the benefits of this

Abstract:
The article considers the semantics of the Russian word kak by. It demonstrates that there are three main types of use of this word that are relevant for the modern Russian language: 1) as an approximation indicator, i.e. the marker of an approximative, indirect or metaphorical use of the linguistic unit it introduces (cf. lёd na reke sluzhil kak by mostom ‘ice on the river served as a kind of bridge’; on kak by veduschij specialist v dannoj oblasti ‘he is sort of leading specialist in this field’); 2) as an indicator of epistemic indefiniteness (cf. infljatsii kak by net ‘there is <kak by&
