Full textIn this thesis, we aim to study the problems of teaching modern turkish to french native speakers; first those which are linked with the specific features of fundamental turkish (the agglutinative character, the wovel harmony, a strong verbal nouns system and an order of words based on the principle of the determinant placed before the determined) and with the fundamental differences between both languages. Then we study the problems of teaching and translation linked with the composite character of turkish and with its recent evolution : the persian-arabics borrowings -namey two languages the structures of which are at the same time quite different from one another and antinomic of those of turkish ; then, the throwing out of those borrowings and the creation of a new vocabulary "pure turkish" (ozturkce). This study is based on a method "easy turkish" and on numerous examples extracted of litterary and journalistic texts

Full textThe purpose of the present study is to analyze the relationship between the ideas of nation and language in Pre-world War I Germany and France. The methodological approach is a comparative one which tries to take into account that the ideas of Nation and national language in both countries were shaped in a long process of mutual influences and "transfers". The concept of national language at the end of the 19th century was closely linked to two debates. The first one was about language purity and reflected a reaction against all types of linguistic change. The second debate was on language expansion beyond the borders of the nation. The idea of linguistic hegemony emerged in the context of imperialistic competition, which was largely considered as a race for cultural hegemony. The debates on language defense and expansion revealed a new public interest in language matters. It led in the 1880s to the creation of a new type of association whose only purpose was either to protect the national language or to spread it abroad. Among those associations were the Allgeneine Deutsche Sprachverein, the Allgemeine Deutsche Schulverein (from 1908 Vereinfür das Deutschum in Ausland) and the Alliance française. By focusing on the discourse of these associations, their activities to promote a certain idea of national language and the political impact of it, the present study tries to reconcile an historical analysis of ideas and concepts with a socio historical approach

Full textThis study proposes to access the plurilingual practices of the Hehe, a population that lives in the Iringa region located on the Southern Highlands of Tanzania through ethnographic research. This country possesses a great linguistic diversity and has built its national unity from promoting and ideologising one specific language: Kiswahili. The dominant linguistic ideology that stems from this singular history undermines the local languages and conceals the reality of day-to-day plurilingual practices. Hence the project to question linguistic choices and code-switching (mainly between Kihehe and Kiswahili, less frequently English) in two villages of the Iringa region and more specifically in School, primary and secondary, Church, catholic and protestant, a local radio station, at a village center, at private homes, among a group of young people, and in homemade alcool bars. The analysis of these interactions allows for an understanding of the competitive dynamics in terms of prestige and field of uses between Kihehe, Kiswahili and English; likewise, it reveals through successive steps different aspects of the linguistic representations of our interlocutors, their emotional attachment to languages, as well as the possibility of an identifiying position “between languages” activated by the mastery of both Kiswahili and Kihehe. Within this context, the present thesis proposes a linguistic anthropology contribution towards the question of plurilingualism with a view to renewing how it can be approached

Full textPublications dealing with « Francophonie » both emphasize the role of African independence leaders and underplay its colonial origins. We produce a more balanced history, highlighting the ambigous role assigned to language in the natives’ acculturation process based on two streams of sources. The rationale developed by the fathers of the French colonial idea, the founders of the Alliance Française and by Onésime Reclus, who coined the term “Francophonie” in 1880 is one major set. The other includes legislative documents and school curricula dealing with lingustic matters in the colonies. The ambiguity stems from a simultaneous desire to create resemblance (so as to assert imperial power and stimulate trade with the colonies) and to maintain, through differential mastery of the language, a distance between colonial agents and natives. French inculturation was thus designed to avoid, on the one hand, that too many natives be left out at the risk of becoming hostile to colonization and, on the other hand, to keep natives out of the community of French citizens. In the final analysis, the « francophone project » that emerged during the independence movements led by a minority of highly educated “french-speaking” natives remains ambiguous. French nationalism provides a successful account of the project’s civilizing mission, which allowed colonized populations to conceptualize their emancipation while simultaneously allowing to keep them within a French cultural sphere of influence. Conversly, it is also possible to analyze the project as a legacy of the “Negritude” movement and the uprooting of the language from its national origins

Full textThe institution of a national language aims at reducing the ways of speaking of all citizens. Thus it prevents the formation of other languages from these ways of speaking, which nevertheless remain as objects of science and nostalgia. The study of the ways of speaking of a community of italian immigrants by means of an oral inquiry shows that the institution most of the time works on the conscience of the ways of speaking before working on the practice itself. It brings about the examination of this institutional process from two examples : neapolitan and provencal. The impossibility of the institution of a neapolitan language is emphasized by priest galiani's "del dialetto napoletano", by the events of the parthenopean revolution, and by dialectal vocabularies in the nineteenth century, denying neapolitano a statute in different ways. The situation is identical for provencal in relation to revolutionary events, dictionaries and the role of school. But the emergence of the felibrige in the second part of the 19thc brings about a symbolic institution yet endowing provencal with the dignity of a language. The ways of speaking provencal are excluded from this process, and like neapolitan and the ways of speaking of immigrants cannot claim any statute

Historical events of the twentieth century have had a major influence on the history of the Azerbaijani language. It is during this period that the Azerbaijani language has encountered a problem without precedent. We can accept the fact that, the language system has not changed in a century because social change cannot completely change the structure of a language. However, it can involve changes in certain levels of language such as the alphabet, vocabulary, dynamics of social functioning of the Azerbaijani language in different periods of the twentieth century.The process of formation of national identity began with the entry of Azerbaijan in the modern phase of development that is related to the intensity of the action on modernization. Full textUnder the impetus of the Nahda and French scholarly expansion, novelistic French literature appeared at the beginning of the 20th century in Lebanon and Egypt with the assertions of national consciousness: collective identities took shape in narratives which built up national imagination by setting down important myths and debating social values. In terms of inter-textual relationships, these first novels originated partly from Arab classical literature, which constituted national cultural heritage, and partly from French literature which provided major aesthetic models – the historical, realist and naturalist novels – but also from local travel and colonialist literature which were reinvested in the novels. In the Levant, French is an alter langue – alternative language -, but in Egypt novels are more influenced by the contact of languages and cultures, and in Lebanon by norms of scholarly French. Edited in Paris, the works are engaged in different channels of recognition: the novelists of Lebanon are received by nationalist followers of Maurice Barrès and the novelists of Egypt by the international pacifists and Europe magazine. In Lebanon, literature in the French language is integrated into national teleology, because the role devised for Lebanon by its first national elite as a cultural crossroads implicates bilingualism. On the contrary, the Egyptian literary arena, despite a remarkably dynamic bilingualism in the interwar years, fractured in the mid 1930’s when writers in the French language freed themselves from purely nationalist themes
