À Ziguinchor, l’un des éléments qui frappe tout visiteur reste la cohabitation de locuteurs de langues différentes. Que ce soient dans les familles, les écoles, les marchés ou même les rues, plusieurs langues sont quotidiennement utilisées dans les discours et les échanges. Le marché Saint-Maur, le principal de la ville, est marqué par la pluralité linguistique. Cependant, il faut noter qu’avec la montée en puissance du wolof dans la communication commerciale, nous assistons à l’apparition de phénomènes liés notamment à la distribution fonctionnelle des idiomes. D’un plurilinguisme pratiqué par une grande majorité de Sénégalais, tant chanté par Juillard dans le passé, nous arrivons à un plurilinguisme diversifié et moins homogène. Ainsi, les pratiques linguistiques dans les cantines de vente d’habits et autres produits manufacturés sont bien différentes de celles que l’on retrouve dans les étals. Nous avons identifié sur le marché Saint-Maur un plurilinguisme à géométrie variable. Pour faire face à la diversité, les vendeurs développent des stratégies d’adaptation à la langue de leurs acheteurs en cherchant à maîtriser des connaissances linguistiques minimales mais suffisantes pour pouvoir échanger et marchander.

RÉSUMÉCette étude examine avec quel degré de granularité divers accents ouest-africains en français peuvent être distingués. Elle vise avant tout à déterminer si, en perception, des auditeurs de l'Afrique de l'Ouest sont capables d'identifier l'appartenance ethnolinguistique, le pays de résidence et le niveau d'études de locuteurs akan, bambara, sénoufo, mossi (de langue mooré) et wolof, enregistrés en Côte d'Ivoire, au Mali, au Burkina Faso et au Sénégal. Une expérience perceptive a été menée, d'où il ressort que les dimensions étudiées sont bien identifiées par les sujets. Pour les jeunes locuteurs comme pour les locuteurs plus âgés, en lecture comme en parole spontanée, les résultats sont très robustes. Ils sont de plus assez fidèles à la conscience linguistique auto-évaluée par les auditeurs: quand ceux-ci se déclaraient confiants pour reconnaître les accents en présence, tel a effectivement été le cas. Quelques indices acoustiques différenciant notamment les accents wolof (Sénégal) et akan (Côte d'Ivoire) ont finalement été dégagés.

CORAY ET MICHAELIS: LA DÉMOCRATIE DE LA LANGUE L’article présente tout d’abord l’ouvrage de l'érudit allemand Johann David Michaelis Beantwortung der Frage der von dem Einfluss Meinungen eines Volkes en Seine Sprache, und der Sprache in die Meinungen (Berlin 1760), qui puise ses idées dans les théories des philosophes traitant la question de la genèse et de l'évolution de la langue (Wolf, Leibniz et Condillac). Ensuite, est exposée sa réception par Coray, telle qu’elle apparaît dans le Prologue de la quatrième partie de l’édition de Plutarque (1812), où sont insérés en notes neuf extraits de la traduction française de l’essai de Michaelis, dont le titre est indiqué mais pas le nom de l'auteur. Coray emprunte à Michaelis l'idée centrale que les érudits ne peuvent être haussés au rang de législateurs de la langue que par la décision de la nation tout entière, parce que la langue est un "État démocratique". Abstract The Wolof (Atlantic, Niger-Congo) numeral system is decimal, with an additive pivot 5. This means that there are special words for the numbers 1 to 5, but that 6, 7, 8 and 9 are formed by 5 + one unit (1, 2, 3, 4 respectively). From 10 onwards, the count starts again. The system is very regular, as only 20 and 30 have unpredictable forms. In addition, despite the relative genetic proximity between the members of the Atlantic family, the numeral systems of these languages display many differences, in particular with regard to the structure of complex numbers. This article provides a detailed description of the Wolof numeral system (list and status of lexical units, morphosyntactic structure of complex numbers), as well as a comparison with the systems of other Atlantic languages.

AbstractIn this paper, we propose a reassessment of Wolof noun morphology and morphosyntax. Wolof is usually said to possess a total of 10 noun classes (8 for the singular, 2 for the plural), marked today exclusively on agreement targets. We provide evidence that two more plural noun classes must be recognized, which have so far been misinterpreted as “collective” rather than plural: the evidence we provide is morphosyntactic (from verb agreement) as well as morphological (from class-related asymmetries in the paradigm of the indefinite article). As for method, the main thrust of the paper consists in showing that an accurate analysis of the Wolof data must make use of the three distinct notions “noun class”, “inflectional class” and “agreement class” (or gender). Under the analysis defended here, Wolof turns out to have a fairly complex gender system, featuring 17 distinct gender values. Our analysis – and especially the discussion of Wolof so-called “collectives” – also bears on the general theoretical issue of how to establish the values of the number category.

ABSTRACTBased on evidence from a French-Wolof phrase book published in Senegal in 1864, this article makes the case that urban Wolof, a variety of the language characterized by significant lexical borrowing from French, is a much older variety than scholars have generally claimed. Historical evidence suggests that urban Wolof emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries in the coastal island city of Saint-Louis du Sénégal, France's earliest African settlement and future capital of the colonial entity that would be known as French West Africa. The intimate nature of early contact between African and European populations and the later role played by the métis or mixed-race population of the island as linguistic brokers contributed to a unique, urban variety of Wolof that has important links to today's variety of urban Wolof spoken in Dakar and other cities throughout the country.

Pour écrire leur roman, les frères Tharaud s’étaient inspirés de leurs causeries avec Alain Demaison, un Administrateur colonial français. Pour ses connaissances du Wolof/Ouolof et des langues mandingues, Demaison avait servi d’interprète auprès des tirailleurs sénégalais en 1915. Cet article tente de démontrer que La randonnée de Samba Diouf s’inscrit dans la dynamique du contre-discours colonial ; il précède aussi au mouvement de la Négritude souvent cité au cœur du projet de décolonisation de l’Afrique Occidentale Française.

Abstract Both Dutch and (West) Frisian make use of the exclamative particle wat (‘how’), that adds an element of surprise about a high degree of something to the semantics of the sentence. In this paper I will first show the similarities between the use of the particle in the two languages. I will demonstrate that, in Dutch, its use is largely confined to constructions that are semantically scalable, whereas in Frisian this restriction is far less strict. I will explain the difference by showing that Dutch wat is a syntactic amplifier of lexical phrases, whereas Frisian wat has developed into a pragmatic amplifier of the core predicate. I will try to account for that difference by showing how homophonous words absent in Dutch are likely to have influenced the use of Frisian wat, and how Dutch prosody strengthens the connection between wat and the amplified lexical phrase, whereas Frisian prosody weakens it. Finally, I will show that the system described as ‘Frisian’ is occasionally found in varieties of Dutch too

ABSTRACTWhen one language has a grammatical category that is rare or lacking in another, this “orphan” category may constrain the types of structures employed when the two languages are combined in bilingual discourse. We systematically examine the effect of categorial nonequivalence on language mixture in two corpora of spontaneous bilingual speech—Wolof—French and Fongbe—French—exhibiting different typological contrasts in adjectival modification structures. Focusing on lone French-origin items in otherwise Wolof or Fongbe discourse, the most frequent, if the most contentious, type of intrasentential language mixture, our method reveals that superficially identical items pattern in markedly different ways in each corpus. In Wolof, their patterns are consistent with Wolof adjectival elements (i.e., verbs), revealing them to be loanwords, while in Fongbe, they pattern with code-switches. We show that this difference is linked to the degree of categorial mismatch in the languages involved. Where categorial equivalence exists (Fongbe-French), code-switches involving French adjectives may occur, as long as structural equivalence between the two languages is maintained at the switch site. Where categorial equivalence is lacking (Wolof–French), code-switching is inhibited, and language mixture is effected via borrowing. This illustrates how, at code-switch sites, both structural and categorial equivalence are maintained.

Determining the morphosyntactic status of verbal constructions is an enduring issue in African linguistics. In Wolof, most verbal constructions are split predicate constructions involving a predicative marker, which encodes the greater part of the grammatical content, and a verb, which contributes to the lexical content. The aim of the current paper is to investigate the morphosyntactic status of these complex predicates. Based on several kinds of criteria (phonology, morphology and semantics), I show that the predicative markers must be analysed as phonologically dependent words (clitics). Thus, Wolof complex predicates clearly display syntactic construction features and cannot therefore be considered as morphological units.

Abstract A quarrel broke out in 1993 in the French literary press concerning the respective merits of two French translations of The Waves (1931). The first translation was by Yourcenar (1937) and the second by Wajsbrot (1993). Two contrasting conceptions of translating are apparent in the critics' positions, and also in the theory and practice (whether explicit or implicit) of the two translators. For Yourcenar, Woolf's text is part of an English literary system which is to be introduced to the French system. As a translator and author her role is to introduce Woolf to a French public. Wajsbrot, on the other hand, considers Woolf as an outstanding artist representative of the genius of the English language. The corollary is that the translator should make himself or herself invisible. These two positions can be related to two conceptions of the translator, the formalist and the romantic, respectively. From 1937 to 1993, the metaphors used indicate the decline of a formalist conception of translation in favour of an idea of the role of the translator which dates from romanticism. Which conception produces the better translation? Résumé En 1993 une querelle a agité la presse littéraire française concernant la valeur des deux traductions de The Waves (1931), celle de Yourcenar (1937) et celle de Wajsbrot (1993). Deux conceptions opposées de la traduction se manifestent dans les arguments dont se servent les critiques ainsi que dans la pratique et la théorie (que cette théorie soit explicite ou implicite) des deux traducteurs. Pour Yourcenar le texte de Woolf fait partie d'un système littéraire anglais qu'il faut introduire dans le système littéraire français. Comme traductrice et auteur, son rôle est donc d'introduire Woolf à un public français. Wajsbrot considère Woolf comme artiste extraordinaire qui représente le génie de la langue anglaise et devant qui la traductrice doit s'effacer. Ces deux conceptions de la traduction peuvent être rapprochées d'une part, d'une position formaliste, d'autre part d'une position romantique. De 1937 à 1993, les métaphores employées par les deux traductrices, et par les critiques, marquent le recul d'une conception formaliste de la traduction en faveur d'une conception du rôle du traducteur qui date du romantisme. At north-west of India there is dry, semi arid region called as The Great Indian Thar desert. It lies between 24o and 35o 5’ N latitude and 70o 7’ and 76o 2’ E. Mammals of Thar desert includes the wolf (Canis lupus), the stripped hyaena (Hyaena hyaena), golden Jackal (Canis aureus), the Indian desert fox (Vulpes v. pusilla), wild bore (Susscrofaspc.), black buck (Antilo pecervicapra), blue bull (Boselaphus tragocamelus), chinkara (Gazella benneti), Hanuman langur (Semenopithecus entellus) etc. Golden Jackal is unique in distribution, occurrence, and survives at different environmental conditions in India including the hot desert. Present study has been carried out at Phitkasni village, situated south-east of Jodhpur city. Large population of golden Jackal has observed and data of their homerange, territory, inter-specific relation, conflict with human and mortality has been studied. It is concluded that regular monitoring and proper conservation management is needed in this area so Jackal and other carnivore like wolf, desert fox and hyena can also be conserved.

Résumé En sémitique, une même racine verbale peut être conjuguée sans gémination, et avec gémination. La première conjugaison correspond à l’action simple, tandis que la seconde exprime l’« intensif ». Dans les langue sémitiques d’Éthiopie, une racine se conjugue soit avec, soit sans gémination. Cette dernière situation relève donc du lexique, et non pas, comme dans le reste de la famille sémitique, de la morphologie. S’agit-il d’un reliquat du système verbal du sémitique commun? Une idée de Wolf Leslau interprétée en termes de la théorie du charme et du gouvernement permet de proposer une réponse à cette question, et de montrer que la gémination qui caractérise une certaine classe de verbes, le type B de l’amharique, est en réalité un phénomène compensatoire conditionné phonologiquement par la centralisation de la voyelle précédente. L’analyse proposée se veut donc à la fois une contribution à la phonologie diachronique et synchronique de l’amharique, et un argument en faveur de la version de la structure interne des segments proposée dans le cadre de la théorie du charme et du gouvernement.

The subject of this paper is an introduction to my assessment of the work of the late American anthropologist, Eric Wolf (1923–1999), whom I consider to be one of the greatest American anthropologist. I plan a monograph on his total work from a point of view, largely overlooked, emphasizing his sensitive, path-breaking, and poetic insights. I see Wolf’s work as having three interpenetrating periods, which I call (1) Eric Wolf, the poet, focusing primarily on his work on Mexico, (2) the study of peasantry world-wide, emphasizing history, context, power, etc. (from the very beginning Wolf demolished the idea of static isolated cultures that anthropologists so loved to study; and in this respect, Eric Wolf changed anthropology forever), and (3) the third period, reaching to his death and never really finished, was Wolf the philosopher and crosser of boundaries.

Certains chercheurs occidentaux et musulmans remettent en question la légitimité du mouridisme, cette tradition islamique lancée par Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba au Sénégal au tournant du xixe siècle. Par la théorie de la réception développée par Robert Jauss pour la littérature, le présent article formule l’hypothèse que le mouridisme en tant que réception de l’islam en Afrique noire est aussi valable que toute autre tradition islamique qui s’est développée depuis la mort du prophète Muhammad en 632 de notre ère. Grâce au charisme et au génie d’Ahmadou Bamba, l’islam est devenu la religion populaire qu’il était appelé à être parmi les populations noires d’Afrique. Se basant sur le potentiel idéologique de l’islam, A. Bamba a réalisé l’émancipation culturelle, religieuse, politique et économique du peuple wolof et, par extension, de tous les Sénégalais, qui sont fiers de sa contribution à la lutte pour l’indépendance de leur pays. La richesse de l’enseignement et de l’action de Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba est encore à découvrir par quiconque est intéressé par la recherche des moyens pour développer le continent africain.

Abstract:
This paper discusses Eric Wolf’s (1923–1999) analysis of power in his last monograph, Anthropology (Wolf 1964) and last book Envisioning Power (Wolf 1999). In Anthropology, Wolf (1964: 96) wrote that the “anthropological point of vantage is that of a world culture, struggling to be born.” What is worth studying is human experience in all its variability and complexity. His aim was to set the framework bridging the humanities with anthropology. He never gave up this quest, only expanding it. In the new introduction to his 1964 monograph, thirty years later, he commented that such a synthesis had not occurred. Rather there were growing schisms in the field. In the preface to Envisioning Power, he held that human sciences were unable or unwilling to come to grips with how cultural configurations intertwine with considerations of power. In 1990 he had addressed the American Anthropological Society, holding that anthropologists favored a view of culture without power, while other social sciences have advanced a concept of ideology without culture. He wrote that his aim in his last book was to explore the connection of ideas and power observed in streams of behavior and recorded texts. Since minds interpose a selective screen between the organism and environment, ideas have content and functions that help bring people together or divide them. While ideas compose the entire range of mental constructs, Wolf understands ideology as configurations or unified schemes to underwrite or manifest power. Power is, according to Wolf, an aspect of all relations among people. Within this framework Wolf analyzes three cases, the Kwakiutl, the Aztecs, and Nazi Germany. The comparisons are very revealing, both the wide differences and similarities in power configurations and in the role of imagination.

Desde sua criação, em 1928, Orlando: a biography, de Virginia Woolf, levanta muitos debates a respeito da questão de gênero, já que seu/sua personagem homônimo/a passa por uma transformação sexual. Neste texto, tratamos dos limites da noção de espaço biográfico, no seu cruzamento com o conceito de (auto)biografia, e da indecidibilidade e entrelugar dos gêneros, literário e sexual, considerando a perspectiva ‘trans’ mobilizada na obra de Woolf. O artigo está dividido em três partes. Na primeira, exploramos a temática do espaço (auto)biográfico a partir das contribuições de Lejeune (2008), Arfuch (2010a, 2010b), Derrida (1985a) e Derrida et al. (1985b). Na segunda, apresentamos a noção ‘lei do gênero’, de Derrida (2011), para tratar da relação entre os gêneros literário e sexual. Na terceira, mostramos os trânsitos entre os gêneros dos sujeitos e dos textos envolvidos no trabalho de Woolf. Considerando o pensamento da desconstrução, constatamos que Orlando transita entre diferentes gêneros e desafia seus limites estanques, e que também há uma relação entre os gêneros literário e sexual, pois a não unicidade de gênero de Orlando (personagem) problematiza o gênero literário (auto)biografia. Concluímos que Woolf/Orlando borra as fronteiras dos gêneros, desafiando o leitor a autenticar sua assinatura.

RésuméLe film The Hours (Stephen Daldry 2002) est basé sur la vie et l’œuvre de Virginia Woolf. L’intertextualité qui le constitue met en cause le concept même d’intertextualité, ce qui institue un caractère méta intrinsèque au texte. A partir de la distinction proposée par Dondero entre réflexivité et métalangage, et celle proposée par Klinkenberg (2000) entre métasémiotique homosémiotique et métasémiotique hétérosémiotique, nous analysons le film The Hours avec l’objectif de montrer les mécanismes à travers lesquels il se constitue comme ‘méta’ et les effets de sens produits par cette caractéristique. Les concepts susmentionnés nous ont permis de comprendre comment l’œuvre réfléchit sur elle-même et sur le roman Mrs. Dalloway (Virginia Woolf 1925), sur lequel elle est basée. De plus, elle réfléchit aussi sur le processus créatif de Woolf. La notion d’énonciation énoncée nous sera aussi utile : elle nous permettra de déceler les processus de dédoublement de l’œuvre, qui imite, à l’intérieur de l’énoncé, aussi bien son acte de production que celui de sa réception en représentant les acteurs de l’énonciation à travers les acteurs de l’énoncé.

In July 1927, Virginia Woolf participated in the first of three broadcasts she presented on the BBC. “Are too many Books Written and Published?” was a collaborative project, scripted jointly with her husband, Leonard Woolf, in the typical BBC format of the conversational debate. Virginia was not entirely comfortable in front of a radio microphone, feeling as she did the constrictions of prescribed time limits, the BBC's conventional respectability, and even the sound of her own voice. Yet she engaged in this program with a liveliness, a good humor, and an inventiveness that display her public persona at its best.

Starting from Kayne's (1976) motivation for the existence of the French que/qui rule based on the complementizer system of French relative clauses, I show that French in fact has a double paradigm of wh-elements, a weak one and a strong one, much like what is found in the (strong/weak) pronominal system. Although only French is discussed here in any detail, such a split seems to have much wider relevance, in other Romance languages, in some Germanic and Scandinavian languages, and beyond (Wolof). This split in turn shows that the que/qui rule (and its cognates) should be looked at differently—in particular, that they should be uncoupled from constraints on subject extraction.
