Full textThe humor is the object of study of this research was to stand Le Messager Popoli (LMP), Cameroonian satirical press. The main objective is to demonstrate that beyond its fun features, marketing, media criticism and demarcation of humor is indicative of the Cameroonian linguistic identity. Assuming that the game in LMP is based on language code, the humor is studied in terms of linguistic incongruity, that means in the report of the out of the language standard because of the distance between the French interlingual standard and French as used in this paper. This work highlights the mechanisms of humor and releases their operation. It has humor LMP as the product of a semiotic construction draws its tasty flavors in the local context of pregnancy and in the creative fertility of its editors. It also attempts, through humor, to grasp the dynamics of French Cameroon, and through him, the Cameroonian society. This research does not neglect the aspect of non-verbal (iconic) presents it as complementary to the verbal message, but especially as photography-identity of the company that gives the iconic representation. It is what justifies the semiolinguistic chosen approach

Full textJudging from the number of studies carried out in the area, there is no gainsay that sociolinguistics is fast gaining ground in Cameroon. Our topic: “Linguistic practices, language status and interactions among speakers in Douala markets” raises some questions, particularly those on the management of communication among speakers sharing different languages and cultures, operating in the markets of the economic capital: Douala. How do so many national languages, in contact with French, behave in a setting of daily commercial transactions? Looking on this issue using Louis Jean Calvet’s “acacia” method, we show that the Cameroonian version of French, pidgin-English and camfranglais are dominant languages spoken in markets in Douala. We have however noticed that owing to generation gap, speakers opt more for camfranglais to the detriment of pidgin-English. The multilingualism of Cameroonians, as we have seen, prompts us to assert that though French is their dominant language, Cameroonians are attached to their mother tongue. They use Cameroonian French, camfranglais and their national languages to identify themselves. This is what we call diglossia embedded in a dominant but minority language bilingualism (as seen among the traders) and in a dominant but majority language bilingualism (among the clients). It is difficult to talk about the quality of interactions without due allusion to politeness which poses serious problems both in market and public places. In our markets, however, questions relating to health are far more predominant than greetings like “bonjour” at the opening of a speech. Expressions of thanks, wishes and projects, which are automatic in France for example, are more or less scarce in Cameroon markets. If one can hear some expressions of thanks and projects like “merci à demain” or “à samedi pour le déballage”, those of wishes such as “bonne journée” or “bon week-end” are almost inexistent and identify those who utter them either as being learned or as coming from abroad. In conclusion, the dominant languages used in markets are languages of urban communication. The national languages spoken in the markets serve to identify the speakers. Multilingualism as portrayed by Cameroonians in markets, the embedded diglossia we just underscored are evidence to the fact that far from being a factor of division, such multilingualism enables each linguistic and cultural identity, not only to express itself but to reach out to others for a full bloom of individual identities

Full textThe work submitted to your attention elaborated from the structural approach, is a synchronic descriptive study of ewondo, a bantu language (a72a) which belongs to guthrie's beti-fang group. The first part (chap. 1-8) dealing with the phonology and morphophonology states structural rules and classifies segmental and tonal units of language into a system. The second part (morphology) gives an inventory and classification of different grammatical units (title i, chap. 910). It analyses augment, prefixes, dependant and independant nominals (title ii, chap. 11-15). Finally, the title iii, chap. 16-18) dealing with verbal morphology, examines grammatical suffixes which are added to radicals in order togenerate simple verbal bases, which in turn, may drive extended and biextended verbal bases. The third and last part -syntax- (chap. 19-22) examines, through predicative schemes the various functions that different types of noun and verb phrases fullfill. . It also presents verbal constituents taking part in verb flexion. The work establishes the main rules structuring the ewondo language and explaining its mechanism. Full textKinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a multilingual and multiethnic city due to its being the object of an important rural exodus. It is in this particular multilingual environment that Lingala is used as a vehicular language, sometimes in competition with French. This is the setting for which we discuss the factors determining the choice between using French only or using classical Lingala and French.The contact between French, the country’s official language, and the Lingala base has resulted in a linguistic heterogeneity which will be analysis on several levels using the theories of code-switching: intersentential code-switching and intrasentential code-switching. But there is also a substratum of European origin which goes unseen today because of its phonetic integration. We have had recourse to formal resemblances in order to discern elements of this substratum and its French, Portuguese, or English etymons and to propose hypotheses about their evolution.This study attempts to describe the formal and semantic questions posed by the Lingala language and by Kinois discourse when they come in contact with European languages and particularly with French. To do this, we have established a corpus of discourses which have been effectively pronounced but which are all published discourses (advertisements, songs, televised news shows in basic Lingala)

Full textThe study starts with a sociolinguistic description of Taiwan at the present time, i. E. A definition of the status of the languages spoken in Taiwan, and of the characteristics of their speakers. Main languages concerned are chinese languages (mandarin, minnan, hakka) as well as formosan austronesian languages. Further on, questions related to multilingualism and language choice in the work environment are explored, especially in relation to Taiwan aborigines. Theories representative of language choice research fields, at the macro- and micro-sociolinguistic levels, are reviewed and discussed, so as to define a methodology for the analysis of the data collected in the east of Taiwan. The two fields of research (a hospital in hualian city and a primary care unit in hualian district) are introduced. Subjects to both surveys are aborigines, and native speakers of the amis, taroko and atayal formosan austronesian languages. Data analysis is performed at both levels of global and interactional (face-to-face) language choice, revealing such mechanisms as code switching, code mixing, and borrowings, and their value as speech strategies. Data analysis is then related to speakers' mental representations of their languages. In a dynamic perspective of language choice, the link between linguistic mental representations and minority language maintenance and shift is evidenced

Full textTikar is a bantoid language spoken in cameroon. This description includes a resume of the phonology (the phonological system was described in detail in an earlier project) and a detailled study of the morphosyntaxe, including utterance types, verb and noun phrases, pronouns, adjectives, deictics, numerals, adverbs, nominalized verbs and relation words (prepositions, etc. ), as well as derivation and composition (still very productive processes), independant and dependant clauses, and finally, the various means by which the constituants of an utterance are topicalized and focalized. Tikar has 27 consonant phonemes, which can be arranged according to five points of articulation: labio-velar, labial, alveolar, palatal and velar, and to according four modes of articulation: stops (voiceless, voiced, implosive), fricatives (voiceless, voiced), nasals (syllabic, non-syllabic) and liquids. As for the vowels, there are 8: four front vowels and four back vowels; with four phonological tones (two punctual tones: high low and two modulated tones: low-high high-low). The tense-aspect system is described in terms of perfectif, imperfectif and perfect. There is a noun class system, but in the present state of the language, it bears little ressemblance to that normally found in bantu languages. Since there is no clear-cut series of noun prefixes, the nouns are classed according to the identifier ("it is a. . . ; they are. . . ") they take. Using this system the nouns fall easily into six classes, which can be paired to form eight genres. The noun class concord system affects the possessifs, the demonstratifs, the pronoun substitutes, the relative pronouns, the copulas, the presentatives, the numerals and the adjectives. The sequences of noun plus noun and noun plus qualifier tend to cause certain tone perturbations

Full textThe aim of our research was to study the phenomenon of language contact of sängö, the national language of the Central African Republic with the French. The challenge was also to test some theoretical approaches to the case of code-switching sängö-french practiced by Central African speakers. The MLF of Myers-Scotton, model 4-M of Myers-Scotton and Jake, Syntactic constraints of Poplack an Gumperz, and Gumperz interpretative approach were adopted in this study on code-switching, while the theoretical prerequisite’s and maxims defined by Grice have been adopted for the thematic analysis of the corpus. This research is at the crossroads of several disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences, namely linguistics, sociolinguistics, ethnolinguistics, semantics and pragmatics. After having described different theoretical and conceptual approaches, this Thesis focused on the analysis of different linguistic phenomena related to sängö contact with the French and the impact of this contact on the French word inserted in sängö statements or fully integrated by sängö. The study then focused on the different functions of code-switching sängö-French and the different manifestations of code switching in the turns speak. To go deep thoughts of bilingual speakers, the corpus has also been submitted to a thematic analysis based on the interpretative approach of Gumperz. Finally, this research has also shown that code switching is seen today by Central Africans as a positive phenomenon that facilitates the enunciation

Full textIn this thesis, we have studied the primary (final, initial, penultimate and antepenultimate) and secondary stress, as well as the stress echo in formal and informal Persian and in its dialects. Persian presents four rhythms - regular, descending, ascending and irregular - and two stress patterns: a regressive and a progressive primary stress. The word-final stress is in disagreement with stress in conjugated verb forms. Contrary to word stress, nouns, adjectives and pronouns exhibit two stress patterns. We have also reflected on the metric, the stress typology and the lexical stress of Persian loanwords in Arabic and Turkish. Word stress in regional (Yazdi, Zaboli, Ispahani) and non-regional (Dari, Tajik , Bukharaï) varieties, and in other languages (Kurdish, Arab, Turkmen, Baluchi) and dialects (kalimiyan, talechi, Mazandaran) were equally analysed. Full textOur research deals with the problem of the contact of languages in the teaching and learning of french, in this case in the Guyanese school environment. Thus, the objective of our research work is to understand how the phenomena of contact of languages that occur in learning situations of exolingual type, that is to say where the young learner is doing the experience of learning a non-maternal language from the pre-school level on the other hand, and how adults (teachers-atsem) use heterogeneous linguistic codes to communicate in the classroom. Our research work is guided by a specific problem: "What is the role of code-switching in the practices of transmission of knowledge, linguistic and extra-linguistic? ". This question represents the backbone of our research and it gives rise to several guidelines on how alternation presents itself as a linguistic resource in didactic exchanges in exolingual contexts. This research essentially borrows from the contributions of Swiss linguistics in the work of Bernard Py (1986, 2004, 2005) on language contact, learning and interaction and Marinette Matthey (2003) on acquisition of second languages at school. Based on an ethnographic approach, we start from the observation and description of the socio-cultural realities of culturally meaningful classroom communication situations in order to describe carefully the teaching and learning practices. Our research focuses above all on a positioning of interactionist inspiration, insofar as we seek in particular to grasp an object attached to the interactions, through which knowledge and skills are negotiated and constructed during the passage of a language to the other

Full textThis research sets out to test the hypothesis on the disparity between the constitutional status of the languages of the Seychelles (Creole, English and French) and their usage. lt shows the distribution of languages in key institutions in relation to Chaudenson's description of status and corpus (2004). lt examines the relationship between linguistic attitudes and representations and behaviour and analyses strategies related to language management and glottopolitical decisions. This thesis presents an exhaustive documentation on the history of linguistic policies in Seychelles from colonial times to the present. To support our hypothesis, 4 surveys (interviews and questionnaires) were conducted with a sample population of 689 persons comprising high ranking government officiais, teachers and students. Results from these surveys show that the speakers' pratices are not in line with the Constitutional lawwith regards to languages. They illustrate that the Seychelles trilingual context involves a stratified triglossia at different levels whereby each language finds its « slot » in relation to contextual usage, representations and speakers' competence. Finally, this research suggests that Seychelles' trilingualism exists in an harmonious way where a complementarity of language functions is the norm

Full textƁaka is an Ubangian language of the Niger-Congo language family. The grammatical description is based on a text corpus that was collected during fieldwork in the department of Haut Nyong in the East Province of Cameroon. The corpus consists of recordings (1h and 36 min) of spontaneous speech, which were annotated in Toolbox, Elan and Praat and then analyzed from a structuralist-functionalist perspective. The thesis is divided into three parts. Part 1 contains the introduction and the phonological analysis. Part 2 is dedicated to defining the word classes. As Ɓaka is a language with little morphology, the following 15 word classes were identified through syntactic criteria: verb, noun, relational noun, personal pronoun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, numeral, predicator, preposition, subordinator, coordinator, interjection, onomatopoeia and modal. For each of these defined word classes, a study of their forms and functions is presented. Part 3 deals with the syntax of Ɓaka, more precisely with the noun phrase, the verb phrase and non-verbal predication, which are the fundamental structuring units of this language. Non-verbal predication encompasses both the use of non-verbal predicators as well as constructions that contain no dedicated predicators and are based on two juxtaposed elements, whose characteristic features are analyzed in detail. Part 3 is also concerned with complex sentences. Full textThe present study sets out within the framework of the theory of speech acts, to make a contrastive analysis of enunciation and more precisely jussive acts. The study is based essentially on two languages : german and ewondo, a language of south-cameroon. After a brief presentation of the languages of south-cameroon and particularly of ewondo, the study begins by analysing the nature of speech acts and classifying them ; it then attempts to determine the structure of a speech act and to propose a new typology after critically presenting the typologies proposed by wunderlich and g. Hindelang. The analysis of the mode of expression of different subtypes retained from the new typology is then minitely conducted on the basis of examples drawn from a corpus indicated at the beginning of the study. This analysis brings out in conclusion some particular linguistic phenomena which require, at the pedagogic level, a special strategy

Full textThe present dissertation concerns the influence of English on the Greek language in the years 1980-2004. The corpus of the study (333 000 words) is based on different types of discourse: on the one hand financial, scientific and political written texts; on the other hand oral speech from radio advertising, arts and politics. The present study investigates whether the influence of English onto Greek has evolved during that period; it also investigates if such influence has generalized to the whole Greek language or if it limits itself to particular discourse types. Two measure instruments were used: the number of borrowings from English and that of code-witches found in the various types of utterances. Multilingualism, language-mixing, the psycholinguistic analysis of such phenomena, the study of loanwords and code-switching, the relationship between language and thought will remain open and fairly promising research fields for quite a long time to come

Full textThis study is concerned with prosody and language contact. The fact that language contact induces change is well documented, but few studies focus on the prosodic effects of contact-induced change. The aim of this study is to provide a case study of the prosodic system of the contact variety Central African French, which has emerged from the contact between French and the African tone language, Sango.The Central African Republic is a multilingual country with between 60 to 100 different regional languages spoken within its borders in addition to two official languages, the lingua franca Sango and French. French has been the main language of education and of public administration since colonial times. In the capital Bangui, Sango is the most used language in everyday communication whereas French is spoken in professional contexts. This study is based on recordings of spontaneous speech of 12 French-speaking informants from Bangui. Acoustic analyses of the recordings show that the prosody of Central African French shares with Sango some fundamental characteristics: most words have fixed tonal patterns independently of their position in the sentence and every syllable carries a static tone. This system greatly differs from the system of European varieties of French, where the sentence melody is determined at the post-lexical level and depends on factors such as rhythm, syntax and pragmatics. The main conclusion of this study is that Central African French may be classified as a tone language and thus is endowed with a prosodic system that is closer to Sango than to European French. This finding suggests that intonation might change radically in contact situations ; the change is not only superficial but concerns the underlying system

Full textThis thesis presents the results of a study that was carried out in French Guiana and concerns a group of children (last grade in primary school) attending Awala-Yalimapo' school. These children are members of one of the six indigenous peoples of this overseas region. Their first language is Kali'na, an Amazonian Indian Language pertaining to the Carib Linguistic Family. The research consists of a description and an analysis of the children's linguistic productions in two settings, both of them in school : the classroom and the school-yard. It aims to reveal the linguistic phenomena occurring during a conversation between bilingual people, while taking into account a specific sociolinguistic situation. This study is deeply linked to the current research debates concerning contact linguistics and bilingualism and is therefore related to the attempts to establish a taxinomy of linguistic phenomena appearing in languages in contact situation. The choice was made to use a conceptual approach, called the " bilinguist approach ", within which the contact of languages is thought to emerge at first in the bilingual individual or, more precisely, in conversations with at least one bilingual person. The hypothesis is that linguistic change is constructed in spoken micro-events and that discourse is the first sign of languages in contact situations. This approach helps to identify the evidence showing the presence of different languages in interlingual productions, such as borrowing, codeswitching or codemixing. These phenomena are described and analyzed during this study and are brought into relation with different contact linguistic or bilingualism theories. This manuscript presents a synthetic approach, including macro- and micro-sociolinguistics, that allows the Kali'na-French bilingual talk to be classified as a bilingual discourse typology dependent on the setting of the conversation : when it takes place in the class-room, children act as learners, and when it takes place in the school-yard they act as bilinguals

Full textDongxiang language is spoken by about 300 000 people mainly living in Dongxiang Autonomous District in Gansu Province, situated in Nord-West China. This language is surrounded by other languages which are originally from different linguistic groups (namely Chinese, Tibetan, Turk and Mongolic). All those languages have highly influenced each other, and the dongxiang language has particularly been influenced by the Linxia Chinese dialect. The geographic isolation of the population and their will to stay away from none Muslims communities has led to exclusive contact between those two languages for a very long period of time. This stable sociolinguistic situation is now destabilized by the new economic development occurring in whole China for nearly twenty years, and therefore, new population and language contacts are occurring today. In this study, I have explained the nature of those changes through sociolinguistic analysis and linguistic description. I have started by analyzing the balance of languages in this particular sociolinguistic situation which has led us to conclude that the community of Dongxiang was not in a situation of diglossia. Through the description of those sociolinguistic changes, I have shown that the dongxiang language has been influenced by Chinese dialects in two phases. During the first phase, it has been exclusively influenced by the Chinese dialect of Linxia and then, other Northern dialects such as Lanzhou’s dialect and Putonghua have started to influence it as well. In the linguistic description part, I have analyzed phonological and lexical elements that have been influenced by Linxia’s dialect. I have then tried to describe how northern Chinese dialects are influencing the dongxiang language through the development of calques and in particular resultative and directional verbal structures. Then I have described the use of Chinese particles and markers de ???? which has appeared in very recent years and are more or less integrated in the language. We have concluded that the Chinese Northern dialect of this recent period have influenced and is still influencing the dongxiang language on a syntactic level, therefore, this kind of influence suggests that more changes will occur under the growing influence of those newly introduced varieties

Full textThe town of Lubumbashi lives a complex situation characterized by the coexistence of numerous languages sharing the same linguistic market: the ethnic language with the identity vocation and with limited usage, national language with a vehicular function and the official French language spoken by a reduced number of city-dwellers. In the context of multilinguism, it is interesting to know the value of each language beside its speakers. In the field we observe an opposition between the speakers and non-French-speakers and French- speakers, and among the latter between educated speakers and speakers having learnt French “on the Job training”. In a context of “diglossy,” the languages generate the contrasted representations which interfere practically on their effective practice. Our research aims at describing at the same time the usages and the linguistic attitudes which are correlated with them. Therefore, we require diverse models, at the same time the model labovien adapted to the urban environment to evaluate quantitatively the degree of linguistic security/insecurity, and the one of variationism developing more quantitative analyses. Concerning the methodology of investigation, our sample population has been constituted from different variables or classificatory features. The technique of the questionnaire (opened and closed questions) has invited pupils to provide their practice and their linguistic representations. The conversations of the type semi-conducted are the dispositive that we use towards the investigations of adults in order to get their linguistic representations

Full textThis thesis presents a study of the representations and attitudes of students towards languages studied in Moroccan university. It focuses on their relationship to their language of origin and foreign languages, namely French and English, and to cultural diversity. Our study also aims at examining the economic value of the languages as well as the factors which determine the use of language skills in companies. The results reveal that these students have an attitude too favorable towards foreign languages. The results reveal that these last ones privilege the foreign languages and the multilingualism in general for the exchanges in their company. They esteem from their employees a perfect knowledge of the foreign languages. This study also treats the contact and the conflict of the languages and we take as case the Moroccan university, we are interested to know if there is a contact or a conflict between the languages spread in the Moroccan university. Our study also puts a glance on the intercultural; we want to know what happens during an interaction between speakers belonging, at least partially, to different cultural communities even if they speak in the same language
