Full textThis research consists on an analytic description of the teaching and learning of French in Saudi Arabia. It begins by examining the most prominent characteristics of the setting, which is the Faculty of Languages and Translation at Riyadh, including compression, distance, and rote learning. Since religious and cultural issue weigh heavily on the syllabus, the socio-cultural context also has to be taken into account. This is why a lexicultural approach adapted to local circumstances was considered as a way of improving the teaching and learning of written expression. The second part of the thesis is devoted to a first-hand critical examination of the contents of the syllabus for teaching written comprehension and in particular of the ways in which they are adapted to local forms of teaching and learning, as well as conforming diplomatically to indigenous cultural constraints. These points are then illustrated with reference to students' written work. The research is based on two main criteria : visual recognition and effective comprehension, which are manifested in three levels of comprehension : global, focussed and implicit. The final part of the study sets out a number of methodological alternatives aiming at imrpoving both the students' reading performance and the teaching and learning of the foreigne language and culture in an institutional context. These propositions fall into two main types, concerning reading strategies and interpretative abilities in French : it is here that the notion of lexiculture comes into play, since it provides access to implicit meanings, many of which are cultural

Full textOur research has a double aim : to try to measure the competence of the Saudi students in the oral conversation by analyzing their productions ; to open new proceedings into the teaching of French in Saudi Arabia to slacken the austere atmosphere of this teaching and to thus motivate the students. Through the study of the corpus carried out near the students of advanced level, we found that the majority of them have difficulties pronounced with the oral examination : they do not speak with ease, they have problems on all the levels linguistic (lexical, grammatical, semantic, morphological. . . ), they miss it much vocabulary. Vis-à-vis this situation, we felt the need to modernize teaching/training of French in Saudi Arabia. We were brought to reflect on the choice of new materials to especially teach French at the advanced level. We were obliged thus to innovate, introduce documents likely to motivate the students and to hold their attention. To achieve this goal, we did not find better than to work with them on authentic documents under all their forms : - written : article of newspaper, small advertisements, note of drugs, receipt of kitchen. . . - sound : press review, match of football, titles of a newspaper of radio, song. . . - visual : fixed images, photo novel, comic strip. . . - audio-visual : television news, film, play, match of football. . . - ludic : company, word, card decks. . . Thanks to their innovation, their variety and their diverting aspect, we are certain that these documents are able to motivate our students. Indeed, as we envisaged, the authentic documents brought their fruits. The students favourably accommodated them. Thanks to this new approach and to the new environment thus created, the students finally found the supports which encourage them to speak and consequently help them to improve their level with the oral examination. Thus they really wanted to be expressed and take part in the meetings devoted to the exploitation of the documents. Quite simply, they needed to be justified by a new way of approaching teaching. When something again, of different, interesting is proposed to the students, one can expect a positive reaction of their share

Full textThe question of oral comprehension is a key activity which necessitates a particular interest in analytic processes. In Saudi Arabia, the state has a keen interest in the teaching of foreign languages. There is an ever increasing number of students who wish to acquire a foreign language, most notably French. This thesis investigates the teaching of French as a foreign language (FFL) in Saudi Arabia and studies the effectiveness of methods (proposed or imposed) in the teaching of French in the Saudi university. Moreover we evaluate the FFL system, paying particular attention to the question of oral comprehension. This allows us to propose solutions, as well as to bring in new methods and approaches for the teaching of FFL in the Saudi university. Our research aims to define the difficulties of Saudi students in oral comprehension, and to study and analyze the effectiveness of university teaching. We therefore conduct a review of the teaching of FFL in Saudi Arabia and conclude that oral comprehension is a key objective in the learning process of any foreign language

Full textThis study treats the subject of contrastive experimental phonetics. It combines both the phonetic and phonological approaches in order to observe, analyze and interpret the learning difficulties encountered by Saudi learners of the vowels of French as a foreign language. The acoustical and perceptual analysis of the difficulties related to producing oral vowels by Saudi learners has enabled us to underline the particular problem of assimilating consonants with vowels encountered by these learners. Based on the conclusions of the experimental study phase, this study presents some ideas and suggestions in the field of phonetics teaching
