Full textThis research consists on an analytic description of the teaching and learning of French in Saudi Arabia. It begins by examining the most prominent characteristics of the setting, which is the Faculty of Languages and Translation at Riyadh, including compression, distance, and rote learning. Since religious and cultural issue weigh heavily on the syllabus, the socio-cultural context also has to be taken into account. This is why a lexicultural approach adapted to local circumstances was considered as a way of improving the teaching and learning of written expression. The second part of the thesis is devoted to a first-hand critical examination of the contents of the syllabus for teaching written comprehension and in particular of the ways in which they are adapted to local forms of teaching and learning, as well as conforming diplomatically to indigenous cultural constraints. These points are then illustrated with reference to students' written work. The research is based on two main criteria : visual recognition and effective comprehension, which are manifested in three levels of comprehension : global, focussed and implicit. The final part of the study sets out a number of methodological alternatives aiming at imrpoving both the students' reading performance and the teaching and learning of the foreigne language and culture in an institutional context. These propositions fall into two main types, concerning reading strategies and interpretative abilities in French : it is here that the notion of lexiculture comes into play, since it provides access to implicit meanings, many of which are cultural

Full textThe present PhD Thesis in language sciences is composed of four sections, which are theoretically and practically articuled, entitled, The French in the Saudi Arabia : inventory of fixtures, speech and sociolinguistic representations. The thesis treated, through a documentary research, and a serie of interviews with lecturers and French speakers, the situation and method of existence of this language in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through the main educational institutions in the Kingdom and inherent linguistic sessions. It put the emphasis on the linguistic and pedagogic policies of the French language in Saudi Arabia, re-sorting the realization carried out and insufficiencies observed in this regard. Analysis of the interviews statements and resolved problems highlighted the cultural and sociolinguistic representations conveyed on the French and France

Full textOur research has a double aim : to try to measure the competence of the Saudi students in the oral conversation by analyzing their productions ; to open new proceedings into the teaching of French in Saudi Arabia to slacken the austere atmosphere of this teaching and to thus motivate the students. Through the study of the corpus carried out near the students of advanced level, we found that the majority of them have difficulties pronounced with the oral examination : they do not speak with ease, they have problems on all the levels linguistic (lexical, grammatical, semantic, morphological. . . ), they miss it much vocabulary. Vis-à-vis this situation, we felt the need to modernize teaching/training of French in Saudi Arabia. We were brought to reflect on the choice of new materials to especially teach French at the advanced level. We were obliged thus to innovate, introduce documents likely to motivate the students and to hold their attention. To achieve this goal, we did not find better than to work with them on authentic documents under all their forms : - written : article of newspaper, small advertisements, note of drugs, receipt of kitchen. . . - sound : press review, match of football, titles of a newspaper of radio, song. . . - visual : fixed images, photo novel, comic strip. . . - audio-visual : television news, film, play, match of football. . . - ludic : company, word, card decks. . . Thanks to their innovation, their variety and their diverting aspect, we are certain that these documents are able to motivate our students. Indeed, as we envisaged, the authentic documents brought their fruits. The students favourably accommodated them. Thanks to this new approach and to the new environment thus created, the students finally found the supports which encourage them to speak and consequently help them to improve their level with the oral examination. Thus they really wanted to be expressed and take part in the meetings devoted to the exploitation of the documents. Quite simply, they needed to be justified by a new way of approaching teaching. When something again, of different, interesting is proposed to the students, one can expect a positive reaction of their share

Full textThe question of oral comprehension is a key activity which necessitates a particular interest in analytic processes. In Saudi Arabia, the state has a keen interest in the teaching of foreign languages. There is an ever increasing number of students who wish to acquire a foreign language, most notably French. This thesis investigates the teaching of French as a foreign language (FFL) in Saudi Arabia and studies the effectiveness of methods (proposed or imposed) in the teaching of French in the Saudi university. Moreover we evaluate the FFL system, paying particular attention to the question of oral comprehension. This allows us to propose solutions, as well as to bring in new methods and approaches for the teaching of FFL in the Saudi university. Our research aims to define the difficulties of Saudi students in oral comprehension, and to study and analyze the effectiveness of university teaching. We therefore conduct a review of the teaching of FFL in Saudi Arabia and conclude that oral comprehension is a key objective in the learning process of any foreign language

It combines both the phonetic and phonological approaches in order to observe, analyze and interpret the learning difficulties encountered by Saudi learners of the vowels of French as a foreign language. The acoustical and perceptual analysis of the difficulties related to producing oral vowels by Saudi learners has enabled us to underline the particular problem of assimilating consonants with vowels encountered by these learners. Based on the conclusions of the experimental study phase, this study presents some ideas and suggestions in the field of phonetics teaching

Full textThe course is focused principally on the study of the written narrative skills od saudi students learning french as a foreign language, more precisely, it is about analysing their ability to construct narratives from a given typology (four types of discourse), with a view to distinguishing between the different methods of constructing written narratives according to the intelligibilty of the linguistic content conveyed. The course is divided into two main sections. The first section presents the conceptual framework of narrative construction in the foreign language using different theoretical models of discourse analysis, the construction of written narrative and the criteria which make up the educational component, int the second section, the focus is on analytical approach. It include subsections on sociolinguistic and methodological aspects, the analysis of written narrative pieces and finally, the eductional proposals

Full textThe present thesis fits into the field of the exploratory research on the didactical issues of the initial and continuous training of teachers of French as a foreign language in the Saudi context: between institutional objectives and the teachers’ expectations. The study focuses on the initial and ongoing training of future teachers. Based on the data collected from the different tools used for this purpose, namely questionnaires, interviews and the analysis of the models of the initial training curriculum of 3 prominent Saudi universities, the research highlights the gap that exists between the prescriptive and the description of the training. In this work, we, as a French teacher at the university in Saudi Arabia, are interested in learning French in generalas part of the training of French teachers, and in particular the learning difficulties that meet the students of French Language. In a rapidly changing society, such as Saudi Arabia, there has been a change in initial and continuous training in recent years, impacted by the introduction of information technologies by the effect of globalization, which demands continuous updating of skills. Our goal is to analyze the initial training given to female students in the French department at Saudi universities who will soon be future teachers. It is therefore starting from this problematic related to the need to provide training that is both flexible and continuous and the need to adapt continuing education to the needs of students that we conducted our research in a theoretical and exploratory perspective

Full textThis research identifies and analyzes the various errors made by Saudi Arabian-speaking learners in the context of relativization. The study is based on a corpus of 1670 relative. Constituted in an institutional framework, this corpus combines written productions obtained in constrained, semi-constrained and more spontaneous uses. The results confirm the fact that relativisation in French is linguistically complex and represents an undeniable difficulty in the course of a learner. Regardless of the relativized function (sujet < OD < syntagme prépositionnel: où < dont < F. Comp), whatever the expected form (quiSU < où < dont < F.comp. < que < qu’) mistakes are numerous. The main difficulties, located at the junction of the matrix and the relative, concern the choice of the required form and the extraction of the preposition. Although the hierarchy of accessibility of Keenan and Comrie (1977) is generally respected (the lowest relativities causing more errors), some data, however, call it into question: the relativization of an oblique seems sometimes more accessible than the relativisation of an indirect object (où OBL appears more accessible than dont OI or the use of an amalgamated form OI or oblique OI). Moreover, the gap between the languages in contact causes errors, due to negative transfers and, in particular, to an indifference between the strategy of the junctor (modern standard Arabic) and the relative pronoun (French) strategy and to the renewal of modalities for selecting the relativiser of modern standard Arabic. We also note a recourse to a universal complementor (transfer of dialectal Arabic?) Sometimes associated with a resumptive pronoun

Full textThe aim behind this research is to analyse the teaching methods applied at the Faculty of Languages and Translation (F. L. T. ), established in 1990 in Saudi Arabia, in order to prepare students for a diploma in professional translation. The present work is divided into three parts. In the first part, a general presentation of education in Saudi Arabia, in both Jeddah and Riyadh, is made and the various parties involved in the educational process are presented. This part ends by a general presentation of how translation is taught at the F. L. T. In the second part, we underline the need to define an analysis model that will enable us to move from describing the F. L. T. To its evaluation. We also specify the various approches to translation (linguistical, comparative, etc. ) and we end up by choosing the E. S. I. T. And its interpretative theory as the model which will help us assess the methods applied at F. L. T. These methods are assessed via the four poles, which, according to the interpretative theory, shape the training of professional translators: linguistical perfectioning, methodology, acquisition of knowledge and of new technologies and practicing translation. The analysis is made in three phases : First, an important idea linked with one pole is studied and its content and structure at the E. S. I. T. Are described. Then, the content and structure of the proposed teaching method at the F. L. T. Are described. In the last part of this research, some pedagogical propositions inspired to me by the evaluation of the F. L. T. Are given

Full textIn the first part of this research, we studied the theories, mecanisms and pedagogy of translation in order to understand the phenomenon of translation. Initially, we analyzed the problems found in automatic translation in order to lay the foundations for our reflexion upon the difficulties faced by those who sought to understand and analyze it. We ther introduced work or the issue of translation (by experts) from different approaches (theoretical, linguistic and translation). We completed this presentation with a reflexion upon a central concept in translation, that of equivalence. In this way, we stroue to offer a wide of views on translation. In the second part, we begen to describe the Saudi Arabian translation market. This description alloued us to create and later analyse the results of a survey of a longe number of translators, both saudis and foreignens, working in the country. Naturally this lead us to reflect, in the third part, upon the theoretical advantages in teaching translation, and to recogrise the need for training, as well as the Important part played by skills. This lead us to look at the implications and to the different programs available for training professional translators in Saudi Arabia. In conclusion, we examined the country's need for professional translators, as well as the most appropriate theory for our country. For this, and being abreast of the situation, we presented certain recommendations regarding this training in Saudi Arabia

Full textIn the 21st century, communicating in foreign languages has become a key factor in a global context. Therefore, this research is dedicated to assess the oral skills of Saudi learners. First of all, the research studies the various dimensions of the oral skills while focusing on the methodologies of developing those skills. It analyses as well the assessment that constitutes an important process in an FFL course. As part of this thesis, we’ve conducted a study analyzing the oral performance of some Saudi learners who took part in several communication situations. On one hand, this study analyses the ability of learners to communicate orally in various situations of communication. On the other hand, it studies the difficulties encountered at the lexical, grammatical and phonetic levels. To go further in our research, we’ve used the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in developing an FFL distance training, which helped, despite some obstacles, improving oral skills of Saudis learners

Full textThis report looks at current teaching of relative numbers within secondary education. It concentrates on the difficulties found within the conceptual and structural fields of addition and multiplication, and thus poses the question of how best to instruct. Given the above, it was decided to study and report on, the teaching methods organised within both the French and Saudi Arabian school syllabus. Research was focused on the contents of both systems' school textbooks and relative programmes to discern common and alternative expectations within the two institutions. This also involved a thorough and analytical reading of the contents of the official texts and handbooks dealing with the teaching of relative numbers and the related activities (in particular, addition and multiplication). At the same time, an analysis of tests undertaken by pupils aged between 11-14 in both countries provided important information highlighting the various difficulties relating to the teaching and understanding of relative numbers

Full textIn line with discussions highlighting the cultural dimension of translators' language training, this study is based on an observation: the constant failure of many applicants to pass the entrance exams to Europe's leading translation schools and offers to seek solutions to the problem. Several professional trainers identified the lack of awareness of cultural mediation during the language training for the candidates, as the key reason for the issue, however they did not indicate how to introduce the cultural mediation in the teaching of foreign languages and translation. It was therefore necessary to conduct a series of empirical studies in order to provide answers to the question. This study defends the idea that the development of the performance of cultural mediation, now required of future translators, is inconceivable without taking into account a specific treatment of the foreign ethno-socio-cultural imaginary. It presents a typology of the various ways in which this imaginary spontaneously and silently invites itself into different kinds of speeches and analyses the way in which this imaginary is addressed from a cultural mediation perspective in translation studies and didactics. A survey of 418 academics (teachers and students alike) identified elements that hindered successful training of translators as cultural mediators, and as a result, a number of suggestions were made to support this officially announced goal in Saudi universities, bearing in mind that these suggestions assign different conclusions to the ethno-socio-cultural approach, depending on whether the intended approach is aimed at a pedagogical or a professional training of translators
