Full textThis dissertation is a descriptive work on the grammar of a Tupi-Guarani language spoken in French Guyana : Wayampi. The main focus is on syntax and morphosyntax. The following topics are dealed with in details : word classes and the formal criteria that allow to distinguish between them, internal structure of the nominal phrase and the inflectional categories that may affect a noun, internal organisation of the predicative phrase and the grammatical categories that may apply the word around which it is organised, general structure of the simple sentence - with a deep analysis of the different formal types of clauses, grammatical relations, diathesis changing and transpositional operations, and serial verb constructions -, and finally, subordination

Full textThe connectedeness of the tongues of the double standard map family is shown by quasiconformal deformation. I determine the growth rate of the coefficient of the Laurent series of inverse of the Böttcher map for quadratic polynomials with escaping critical point. An inequality that yields a domain on which there is no critical value of the multiplier map is derived from the theory of quadratic differentials. I give an alternate proof of Levin criterium for non local connectedness of infinite satellite renormalizable quadratic Julia sets. A geometric model of this situation is also investigated

Full textThis thesis has three main objects: the morphological description of reduplicated words with a view to deducing the various types of reduplication in Malagasy, determination of the different functions of reduplication and the study of the semantic values provided by the reduplication. The data collected from a number of Malagasy dictionaries and lexicons that are availables how case the productivity and profusion of the process. This research work thus aims to show reduplication’s place in the Malagasy lexicon, based on morphological and semantic analysis. This work is based on two theoretical views: typological reduplication (Blust: 1998, 2001 and Zeitoun: 1998, 2006) and on the other hand partial reduplication which functions as affix (Marantz: 1982) and McCarthy and Prince (1999). This study is based on relations, functions and associations, thus appealing to structural, functional and associative morphology by adopting opposition relationship (according to Rajaona: 1977, 2004 and the linguistic circle of Prague) and Danielle Corbin’s associative morphology (1987, 1991, 2004). Items of the data have been extracted from written work ssuch as dictionaries as well as existing sound materials or materials we have collected ourselves. This thesis is divided into three parts which comprise seven chapters. As results, the morphological and semantic study of the data identified at least nine types of reduplication, five functions and twenty-five values of reduplication in the Malagasy language. In the conclusion, we also discussed limits, applications and perspectives

Full textThis thesis offers a description of Guiqiong, a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in Sichuan, China. Three aspects of the language in question are covered: phonology, morphology and the syntax. The consonant inventory of Guiqiong is comprised of 34 consonantal phonemes, with the possibility to form two types of consonant clusters : prenasalized consonants and clusters with the medial glides /w/ and 1)1. The vowel system is comprised of 8 oral vowels and 6 nasal vowels. Guiqiong is attested exclusively with open syllables, and the syllabic structure is (N)(C)(G)V. There are four tones in Guiqiong: high level (55), mid level (33), falling (53), and rising (35). Tone sandhi can be observed in various contexts. In terms of lexical morphology, derivation, reduplication and compounding represent the major processes to create new words. There are also Tibetan and South-Western Mandarin loanwords in Guiqiong. As far as the nominal system is concerned, a plural marker and a fairly elaborate inventory of case markers are attested in Guiqiong. Verbal marking in Guiqiong encodes TAM features, directionality, negation and interrogation. Three major types of independent clauses are found in Guiqiong: declarative, interrogative and imperative. Nominalizatior is used for relativization and complementation. As for clause linking, linking markers and parataxis are the two main strategies in Guiqiong
Petit, Daniel. "'Swe- en grec ancien : la famille du thème de pronom réfléchi." Paris 4, 1996. http://www.theses.fr/1996PA040101.
Full textThis study is devoted to the analysis of the representation of the Indo-European reflexive pronoun stem *swe-in old Greek. Through its morphological structure, the reflexive pronoun appears in Greek to be close to the personal pronouns. From this formal proximity between *sew- and the personal pronouns, which could be observed also through the etymological evidence in the other Indo-European languages, we could conclude that the reflexive pronoun was in fact a personal pronoun of a particular kind. However, through its syntactical behavior and the kind of reference it has to express, it seems to belong to a clearly different pronominal category. We are therefore confronted with a contradiction which we tried to answer in this study through an analysis of the situation of *swe-in Greek and of the main features which could help to define its position: stress and syntactical reference (opposition of anaphora and reflexivity), phonological structure of the stem (*swe-, *se- and *sewe-), number (opposition of a singular *swe-and a plural *sbhe-), person (limitation of *swe-as a third person pronoun) and case (inflectional paradigm in relation with the paradigm of the personal pronouns). The chief conclusion of this analysis, which is based especially on archaic Greek and on the comparison with the Indo-European evidence, is that it could be possible to suppose that the stem *swe- had originally a semantical value (whose evidence could be found in derivative lexical stems, like *swed-"particular", *swedh-"habits", *swet-"fellow"), and to reconstruct, behind the syntactical function of *swe- (reflexive pronoun), an older semantical function ("oneself in its individuality"), which could be still observed at an historical stage in the different Indo-European languages

Full textThis contrastive approach was impulsed by Mervyn ALLEYNE (1980) who pointed out, « Some Similarities of Afro-American » regardless of lexifier, like serial verbs, topicalization, TMA verbal system…In a synchronic perspective, the purpose of this research is to estabish structural and functional similarities between Jamaican Creole (JC) based on English lexicon (CBEL) and Martinican Creole (CM) based on French lexicon (CBFL) in order to identify distinctive features of Creole Languages. After a survey of the linguistic fields according to the method to determine a family of languages of Theophile OBENGA (1993), it becomes obvious that these specific structures are more than similar in these two Afro-American languages.Opposed to flexional languages like English and French, widely spread in West African languages, these characteristics are functioning in Creole Languages on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, and can be considered as distinctive features. In this new family of languages, European languages are decisive at a lexical level, while African languages are essential for phonemic, prosodic, syllabic, semantic and morphosyntactic structures

Full textFor a family ( F_{t,a}:x->x+t+a phi(x) ) of increasing homeomorphisms of R with phi being Lipschitz continuous of period 1, there is a parameter space consisting of the values (t,a) such that the map F_{t,a} is strictly increasing and it induces an orientation preserving circle homeomorphism. For each theta in R, there is an Arnol'd tongue T_theta of translation number theta in the parameter space. We study the shape of the rational tongues in this thesis. Given a rational p/q, the boundary of T_{p/q} is a union of two Lipschitz curves which intersect at a=0 and there can be a non zero angle between them. When phi is analytic, we study the widths of these rational tongues on the slice a=a_0 as we approach a parameter (t_0,a_0) such that F_{t_0,a_0} has a Herman strip of translation number alpha in R-Q. In this case we prove that the width of T_{p_n/q_n} at height a_0 decreases exponentially fast with respect to q_n, where (p_n/q_n) are the convergents of alpha. For the standard family ( S_{t,a} : x->x+t+asin(2 pi x) ), the boundary curves of T_{p/q} touch each other and q is their order of contact. Using the techniques of guided admissible family, we give a new proof of this. In particular we relate this to parabolic multiplicity of the map s_{p/q} : z-> exp(i2 pi p/q) z exp(pi z) at 0 and generalize this result for guided admissible families
