Full textThe purpose of this study is to perform a synchronic description of the purepecha language spoken on the islands of patzcuaro's lake (Mexico). The phonology and the synthematic structures are firstly examined and the syntax is later studied. These predicated structures are both analyzed : first, the verbal predicate and the organization of the actantial zone and, secondly, the nominal predicate with copula and its structuration taken as a complex predicate. The inventory of the classes constituted by unities is arranged according to this dichotomy. The syntactic functions are also examined along with the different function unities that give a material form to them. Afterwards, we bring to light a few considerations concerning some transphrastic markers that have been selected from the narrative. Finally, the variations of use in the different fields (phonology, morphology, syntax. Lexicography) are analyzed and these modifications reveal that nowadays the purepecha language is seriously weakening, and even in processus of disappearance in some communities

Deicticity is one among several properties of language which do not reflect nor depend on sheer reason: iconicity, phonosymbolism, multiplicity of encoding, contradictability, fixity, tabouicity. Diachronic evolutivity is also definitory of language. For all these reasons the concept of "natural language" is tautological. Full textMainly considered as an entertainment recalling the history of the first inhabitants of the American continent, Native Amùerican dance proves here its high semantic potential evoking the main mythic lines sutaining a characteristic Native American way of seeing the world. The Eagle and the Snake, as principal roles in myths and dances, will testify of the semantic elements they implicate and carry with them while performing, their representational plasticity allowing them to be evoked as soon as they are seen or only suggested in gesture, or in words pronounced on stage. We demonstrate that dance, together with vernacular language still spoken on stage during creremonies and Pow Wow, reveals a deep structure of Native american culture, which happens to be fractal. This structure showing a dynamic fractal aspect allows people who are brought up in native culture, as well as the ones who only perform once a year in pow wow, to access by dance and language in motion to enough components of their culture for its continuation. The way of learning the dances by copying an elder plays also a part in the cultural transmission, while respecting individualities, because it is a pattern to accomplish which is given to acquire and not a body shaping. This fractal pattern featuring on stage in dance and vernacular laguage practices, and also in Native American artifacts and narrations, constitute the latent prospective of cultural perpetuation fo Native american People today

Full textPartition inhabits the Indian and the Pakistani novel in English through modernist tropes such as ellipsis and fragmentation, metaphors of mutilation, dislocation and exile, and the symbolic figure of the refugee. The unspeakable violence of this trauma is also embedded within the narrative through the visual and poetic trope of the shadows, which has not been examined yet. In the novel Twilight in Delhi (1940), the shadows are premonitions of the cataclysm of 1947 as they stage the devastating impacts of colonial modernity on the high Muslim culture of India. In four novels published after the division of the subcontinent – Sunlight on a Broken Column (1961), Clear Light of Day (1980), The Shadow Lines (1988), Burnt Shadows (2009) –, the shadows are indelible, porous and unstable memory-traces that permeate the regional cartography and individual psyches. Together with the dual motives of the ghost and the mirror, these shadows subvert the official historiography and open up a discursive space in which the memories of subaltern individuals and families, transmitted over several generations, connect Partition to other international traumas via knots of multidirectional memory. Through their visual dimension, the shadows shape a body memory which involves the reader in an empathic and reflexive semiotics of the gaze

Full textThe present work proposes a cross-approach of sociolinguistics and didactics to explore the teaching of languages, especially English, Tamil, Hindi and French, in the Indian context. The study aims at a better understanding of issues on educational management of multilingualism in India while relying on a case study located in Chennai and Puducherry (South India). The inquiry focuses on consistent links between the sociolinguistic situation of India, language education policies, and practices and perceptions of teachers in relation to languages and multilingualism. Linking these different levels of analysis occurs through a process of contextualisation that highlights some specificities of both social and individual multilingualism in India. The research questions more specifically the place of French in the panorama of language teaching in India, as well as related teaching methods and representations. The study of practices and representations of language teachers has been done through a field survey in schools in Chennai, at the Alliance française of Madras (Chennai) and at the Lycée français of Puducherry. This analysis leads to a few suggestions for a better recognition of multilingual practices by the school, so that languages and varieties of the social environment would be taken into account

Full textThis thesis of didactic of the French Foreign Language analyses the role of the lexicon in the interaction with migrant adults en a professional environment. This context reveals that the lexicon holds a central place in the procedures of teaching and training. Their description requires a model of analysis of the word's relationships with its indications present in the didactic situation. Analysis of the indication, "process from witch an uncertainty starting from an indication is dissipated", such as Prieto (1964 sq. ) proposed, is integrated into advanced research on pragmatic and agrees with the Bange's model of pragmalinguistic (1982), witch it even supplements by the concept of universe of speech, returning its coherence an autonomy on the discursive level of data analysis. This integrates model is put to the test on a corpus collected during a training. The conclusion presents the prospects for didactic treatment of the lexicon

Full textThe yuhup language (makú puinave family) is spoken in the borderline between Colombia and Brazil by one of the six nomad tradition peoples who inhabit the north-west Amazon region. Yuhup language is in danger of disappearance due to the reduced number of speakers (five hundred) and the sociocultural crisis they are living now. The research, done from a functional linguistics framework presents a description of the phonology, the morphology and the syntax. The analysis is based on the simple clause morphosyntax. Firstly, is described the social, cultural and sociolinguistic context. Secondly, it is discussed the phonetics, the phonemics, the morphology, the syllable structure and the prosodies. Thirdly, it is presented the structure of declarative, interrogative, imperative and negative simple clauses. Furthermore, we can see an analysis of the internal structure of non predicative constituents : nouns and modificators, pronominals and localizers. Particular attention is given to the description of compound nouns which provides evidence of the emergence of a nominal classification system. A study of verbal and not verbal constituents comes after; the verbal structures express aspectual and temporal categories by a complex combination of morphemes. A comparison of predicative structures demonstrates a rich interaction between morphosyntactic structures and informative structures. Finally we describe the verbal compounds, that express notions related to motion, aspectuality, modality, mode, sequence, manner and cause, and that make clear a fertile dynamics between lexicalization and grammaticalization of components. As a conclusion are signalled the future perspectives of the research. Annexed we present the transcription of two texts and the numeric system of the language

Full textThis thesis explores the notion of the ethnotext, which is, in Chantal Zabus’ terms, composed of: ‘[…] discursive elements ranging from rules of address, riddles, praise names and dirges to the use of proverbs”. (Zabus, The African Palimpsest) as a way of resistance to linguistic domination. This notion will be studied in relation to three forms of linguistic domination: French colonialism in Algeria and Morocco; postcolonial linguistic policies applied by these two new nation states; European settlement in Canada and the United States of America and the neocolonial linguistic policies affecting Amerindian languages such as Mi’kmaq and Choctaw. The study will be illustrated with a corpus of four autobiographies: Mouloud Feraoun’s The Poor Man’s Son (1954) [Kabyle in Algeria]; Mohamed Choukri’s For Bread Alone (1982) [Rifian from Morocco]; Rilla Askew’s The Mercy Seat (1997), [Choctaw from the U.S.A] and Rita Joe’s Song of Rita Joe: Autobiography of a Mi’kmaq Poet (1996) [in Canada]. This comparison aims at contrasting these four cases of linguistic resistance to seek their common points, resistance strategies and cultural resemblance in order to establish the ethnotext’s transatlantic dimension. Transatlanticism will in turn be contextualised against a broader canvas that of the possible extinction of endangered languages faced with globalised societies

Full textFusing decision information coming out of different experts is an important issue in Automatic Language Identification. In order to explore and compare different fusion strategies, the information behaviour is modelled by means of formal classification methods provided either by the Statistics Theory, such as the Gaussian Mixture Model, the Neural Networks and the Discriminant Classifier, or by recent research advances in Possibility and Evidential Theories. As an alternative to empirical procedures, a formal fusion methodology within the Bayesian paradigm is proposed: evaluating expert performance by means of the Discriminant Factor Analysis provides us with confidence indices, aggregating expert decisions takes us to choose those fusion methods that provide us directly, or after transformation, with probability or likelihood values of languages, and building and weighting new loss functions with confidence indices lead us to make unique decisions by minimum risk

Full textThis repertoire, which attemps to provide a contribution to the analysis of discourse in contemporary spoker french, describes and studies lexical signs whose use is indissociable from the spontaneous spoken language, and of which they occasionally constitute the basic framework. The lexical signs of spontaneous spoken language are defined by linguists under various names : "appuis", "bequilles", or "chevilles" for some ; "aiguilleurs", "connecteurs", "introducteurs" or "ponctuants" for others ; they function sometimes as markers of argumentation and structure, sometimes as links of discourse. Syntactically heterogeneous (interjections, adverbs, verbs, nouns, demonstratives, prepositions, prepositional phrases, specific constructions), these markers act as forms gradually undergoing solidification :"bon, mais bon, je te dis pas, parce que, tu vois, ouais, disons, enfin, finalement, voila, c'est ca, quoi", characterized by permutability and interchangeability. This study is concerned particularly with the rerouting of use practiced by the speaker who insidiously alters the original meaning of these signs. The main part of this study illustrates, by numerous examples of common spoker french, these attempts at rerouting which result in the modification of usage and of the nature of the signs which have thus become marks of communication

A precise inventory of its uses from a descriptive point of view is made in order to determine its conditions of appearance and the conditions in which it does not appear. Two major categories of hypotheses are confronted: seamantic-based hypotheses and purely syntactical hypotheses. This is to demonstrate the merits of the second approach and the weak points of the first. Already published theories on the problem of i are examined. Full textThe 19th century federal measures to “kill the Indian and save the man” entailed a language shift. The loss of the native language was linked to a sense of shame and a loss of cultural identity. The founding principles that used to frame the Navajos’ way of life were no longer being passed on from one generation to the next. So in the late 1960’s, the Navajos who call themselves the Diné and are well-known for their exquisite jewellery and finely woven rugs, instituted a comprehensive strategy to retain and revitalize their language and their culture. This dissertation examines how, despite intra-community conflicts over the validity of the transmission of a language and a culture through school-based education, the Navajos have implemented the revitalization of their language and culture based on the Creation Story and the teaching of the Holy People, their ancestors. If one the one hand these significant steps in sovereignty in education have managed to make the Navajo regain pride in who they are and where they come from and improved the scores in local and national tests, the Navajo Nation must make sure it will find a way to reduce the number of drop-outs, improve the standard of living of a great number of its member who live below poverty level and develop its economy and heal societal evils that hamper social individual success. The financial returns of Indian gaming may help the Navajo nation overcome these challenges, but its leaders must ensure they can cope with globalisation and they can balance Navajo and western culture while preserving their heritage so as to live in harmony in both worlds still keeping their cultural, linguistic and cultural roots

Full textThis dissertation has a double objective. On the one hand, we try to understand the impact static and dynamic cues have on the perception of Arabic vowels, and on the other hand, to evaluate the role of vowel density on the vocalic space organisation in Moroccan Arabic, Jordanian Arabic and French. First, we evaluate the role of different cues for vowel discrimination in production and perception (obtained in different consonantal environments and production situations). Results in production show that the use of dynamic cues helps to discriminate the vowels between and within the three languages. Inter-language differences may be related to the Adapted Vowel Dispersion Theory, where the vowel space in Moroccan Arabic seems more centralised than that of Jordanian Arabic or French. At the perceptual level, results indicate that vowel identification in Arabic improves when dynamic cues are used in comparison with French. Some important differences between the vowel spaces in the three languages are shown. These may be caused by vowel density effects. Although the use of dynamic cues is more adapted to Arabic, French listeners were helped when dynamic cues were available. These results indicate that static and dynamic cues are complementary in vowel description between the languages. As suggested by the Dynamic Specification model, it seems that the role of dynamic cues in vowel perception is independent from the language under scrutiny

Full textAs Twitter evolves into a ubiquitous information dissemination tool, understanding tweets in foreign languages becomes an important and difficult problem. Because of the inherent code-mixed, disfluent and noisy nature of tweets, state-of-the-art Machine Translation (MT) is not a viable option (Farzindar & Inkpen, 2015). Indeed, at least for Hindi and Japanese, we observe that the percentage of "understandable" tweets falls from 80% for natives to below 30% for target (English or French) monolingual readers using Google Translate. Our starting hypothesis is that it should be possible to build generic tools, which would enable foreigners to make sense of at least 70% of “native tweets”, using a versatile “active reading” (AR) interface, while simultaneously determining the percentage of understandable tweets under which such a system would be deemed useless by intended users.We have thus specified a generic "SUFT" (System for Helping Understand Tweets), and implemented SUFT-1, an interactive multi-layout system based on AR, and easily configurable by adding dictionaries, morphological modules, and MT plugins. It is capable of accessing multiple dictionaries for each source language and provides an evaluation interface. For evaluations, we introduce a task-related measure inducing a negligible cost, and a methodology aimed at enabling a « continuous evaluation on open data », as opposed to classical measures based on test sets related to closed learning sets. We propose to combine understandability ratio and understandability decision time as a two-pronged quality measure, one subjective and the other objective, and experimentally ascertain that a dictionary-based active reading presentation can indeed help understand tweets better than available MT systems.In addition to gathering various lexical resources, we constructed a large resource of "word-forms" appearing in Indian tweets with their morphological analyses (viz. 163221 Hindi word-forms from 68788 lemmas and 72312 Marathi word-forms from 6026 lemmas) for creating a multilingual morphological analyzer specialized to tweets, which can handle code-mixed tweets, compute unified features, and present a tweet with an attached AR graph from which foreign readers can intuitively extract a plausible meaning, if any

Full textThe dramatic literature of the Indian ocean's colonies is ignored by the specialist of the francophone narrative and poetry of the islands of Madagascar, Reunion and Mauritius. Even if Malcom de Chazal and Jacques Rabemananjara are largely known by the experts of the area, the analysis of the dramatic production is still defective. The purpose of our study is to complete the work of a few critics who have engaged on the exploration of the Indian Ocean's drama of the origins (Antoine Chelin for Mauritius, Michel Corvin for the Magalasy theatre) and the contemporary production. Our study is dividend into two parts : an historical introduction in which we consider the rising and the fall of the French colonial empire in the Indian ocean; the second chapter consists in the catalogue and analysis of various authors and styles that have dominated the indian ocean's production during the past century, trying to define the dramatic space of the islands comparing the local production with the european and african ones

The text was first established by I. Bekker (1816) and R. Schneider (1878); it has been revised and completed after careful reading of the only remaining manuscript (parisinus graecus 2548). The explicative system of Apollonios appears ambitious and coherent: he reshapes the Alexandrian method and introduces units of analysis larger than the stoic molecular proposition, thus demonstrating the semantic and syntactic properties of most Greek conjunctions and particles, whose semantism had been neglected before

Full textIn Portuguese literature, many works contain semiographical elements which contribute to the creation of the former by a motion of construction/deconstruction, taking the text to a dimension beyond that strictly verbal. This study focuses on this category of texts called 'fragmental writing'. Considering this mode of construction, the problem is as follows: in which way is meaning construed from the onomasiological and semasiological viewpoints in the body of contemporary Portuguese literature? The analysis of the subject's indicators of utterance shows a fragmented, cleaved (onomasiology) "I", which projects itself outside the inner self towards an abundance of indefinite voices (Part I). The characterisation of fragmental writing and the study of the various configurations of graphical and textual fragmentation reveal that the internal structure of these texts approaches that of a network (Part II). Fragmental texts are "open works" in that they engage the reader to participate to the creation of the works itself by taking various interpretative paths (semasiology) (Part III). The wealth and plasticity of the Portuguese language and the complexity of contemporary Portuguese texts require an epistemological analysis. This analysis is carried out all along this study in a motion of back-and-forth between the texts and the linguistic instruments combined from multi-disciplinary perspectives

Full textThis thesis is the first in-depth and comprehensive study on Sattaka, an Indian dramatic genre whose characteristic lies in its language, the Prakrit. The name of this genre goes back to Kohala (2nd to 4th centuries), but it has become known by Rajashekhara’s Karpuramanjari (9th-10th centuries, Kannauj) who gives, for the first time, in the prologue of this play, its definition. According to this, it is a genre related to the Natika, a hybrid genre of classical theater. Prakrit - the generic term for various dialects – has developed in parallel with Sanskrit as a literary language. Its regional varieties have been attributed to various characters in classical theatre in order to indicate their social status. Rajashekhara, breaking with the multilingual rules of classical theater applied, inter alia, to the Natika, composed his Sattaka entirely in Prakrit, in accordance with the rules on phonetic qualities of literary languages in Indian poetics. His choice of language has been the matter of discussion among theoricians and his Karpuramanjari has become the standard for the later authors of Sattakas. In this thesis, after having traced the evolution of this genre, we analyze not only the various theories about the language and the dramatic structure of the Karpuramanjari, but also the plays themselves, in order to elucidate the following question: what is a Sattaka? This work also aims to promote related research works on the evolution of dramatic art during the Middle Ages, on the authors, as well as on their times. This study contains numerous citations of Sattakas, of which we give the first French translation and, for some of them, the very first one

Full textConsidering notes taken while attending a course as a writing genre anchored in a specific discursive background, the parameters of which are to be taken into account, this thesis confronts the oral discourse of a young teacher (delivered in French) with the notes taken by French and Dutch students. In an often interdisciplinary approach, note taking has been examined in cognitive psychology, linguistics and didactics. The first part of the thesis consists in an assessment of these studies. Contrary to most of these works that rest on the practices of note takers, one of our objectives is to analyze the interrelation between teacher's discourse – which, through more or less explicit hints, constantly guides the note takers – and note taking. To make this oral discourse and these notes interrelate, several levels of analysis have been considered in the second part: that of the lexical units, of the clause, of the discourse. However, to assess the activity of note taking itself, intermediate stages have been defined according to their pragmatic role. The last part deals with the results that can be drawn from our studies. The reduction processed by note takers has thus been assessed and qualified. The reaction to the hints given by the teacher and entailing note taking has also been measured. These analyses made it possible to distinguish between different note taking modes. If Dutch and French students differ in their practices on a few points, it appears that the main differences lie in an individual practice of note taking. Some suggestions intending at providing some help to students have been sketched out according to the difficulties met with by note takers

Full textKikuro people play many music genres: in this dissertation we analyse Kagutu flute music, Tolo female songs, Takwara clarinet and Atanga flute music. We aim to show how social relations are reproduced in musical structures. Women sing a repertoire of songs sharing some of its melodies with Kagutu flute repertoire. This dissertation demonstrates that musical variation is a form of feminine assertiveness. Another proof of the representative power of Kuikuro music concerns the spirit called Itseke. Kagutu flute music belongs to Itseke and the flute can pronounce the name of the spirit owner of the piece of music, turning sensible the spirit's presence. The apprenticeship of music is describes in one of the main chapters. Language plays an important role in learning, since instrumental music is memorized by means of a sequence of syllabes. The spirit's names "sung" by the flutes also are an important mnemonic tool

Full textThis dissertation is a grammatical description of Ye'kwana, a language of oral tradition of the Cariban family spoken in Venezuela and Brazil by less than 7.000 speakers. The language variety studied in this work is spoken in the Caura bassin, in Venezuela. This study is based on primary data obtained among 59 speakers thanks to a documentation project and 15 months of fieldwork, in particular in two traditional villages. The analysis was conducted within a functional-typological approach and within the context of endangered languages. The dissertation starts with a sociolinguistic profile of the language. Then the linguistic topics covered in the dissertation include the phonology and verbal, nominal and adverbial morphology. Special attention is given to the topics of tense-aspect-mood (TAM) and person cross-reference. A chapter is dedicated to the adverbial and postpositional lexicon related to space. Also included are some elements of syntax, particularly non verbal predication and subordination. The annexes provide six texts, glossed and translated, extracted from a larger database within the frame of the documentation. One of the remarkable typological characteristics of the language pertains to the diversity of main clause alignment patterns. Indeed, there is a dominant split/intransitive-hierarchically organized alignment type, an innovative imperfective construction ergatively aligned and three auxiliarized constructions presenting a mixed pattern of nominative absolutive alignment

Full textHow does a monarch exercise his power over two geographically distant territories, both populated by juridical minorities? This thesis intends to carry out a comparative study of the way in which the Hispanic Monarchy exercised political control, and in particular territorial mobility control, over the Morisco minority in the Kingdom of Valencia and the Peruvian Indian minority during the 16th century.This research will show the important role of controlling the territorial mobility of those minorities as the monarchical instrument for reaching its political, social and economic goals in each territory. The analysis of these objectives, based in large part on the legislative rulings of that era, infers that the Moriscos and the Peruvian Indians endured a differentiated control due to the political, social and economic context that prevailed in each of the territories they occupied. Nevertheless, this work reveals the will of the monarchical power in displacing and alienating these minorities from the coasts or grouping them in distant villages, in order to better confine and control them. Paradoxically, it is found that such control ends in creating “undesirable” effects, such as escapes and other forms of resistance

Full textThe matter of this study is the musical year cycle of a Jalq'a community, a Quechua speaking people of highland Bolivia. The ethno musicological analysis shows that this year cycle makes up a wide and meaningful musical form. The basis of this form is the opposition between repertories whose elements are structured and fixed, and on the other part repertories which turn out to be unstructured and unfixed. Performing these different repertories creates distinct time sequences which are embedded with specific meanings and sound experiences. Together, these musical and time units make up a wider meaning: the alternation between the two opposite parts of the universe. As a musical construction, the calendar produces a wide range of meanings. It connects the cosmic categories and gives one of its forms to a central myth. This musical calendar is a structuring agent for time and space, it links specific places of the Jalq'a environment, lastly, it links periods of the year and mythical categories of space and mythical categories of space and time

Full textThis dissertation is a comprehensive grammatical description of Namtrik, also known as Guambiano, an under described language of the Southwestern Colombian Andes spoken by about 23.242 people (Moseley, 2019). This grammar focus in a highly endangered dialect of Namtrik, spoken in the community of Totoró by 76 native speakers (1% of a total population of 7023 people) who are all over 50 years (Gonzales 2013:11). This dissertation is co-supervised by Antoine Guillaume (DDL, CNRS & Université lyon 2) and Tulio Rojas Curieux (Université du Cauca & GELPS). This dissertation includes a phonological, morpho-phonological, morphological and syntactic description of this language and is based on a Namtrik audio-video corpus collected in collaboration with trained members of the community. The HRELP-SOAS program funded this doctoral research project and also a documentation project of the language

Esta lengua es hablada en el suroccidente colombiano por alrededor de 23.242 personas (Moseley, 2019), sobre la cordillera de los Andes, en el departamento del Cauca, en los resguardos de Guambia, Ambaló, Totoró, Quisgó y Jambaló. Esta gramática describe una variante seriamente amenazada delnamtrik, hablada en el resguardo de Totoró por alrededor de 76 hablantes, que corresponden al 1% de la población total de la comunidad (7023 habitantes) (Gonzales 2013)
