In this report, 10 at% lanthanum was introduced to the perovskite structure of bismuth ferrite at the expense of bismuth through a modified Pechini wet chemical method. Green body powders were calcined at several temperatures, and the lattice parameters for each size were found by Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffraction data. Biosorption of the lanthanides: La3+ (Lanthanum), EU 3+ (Europium) and Yb3+ (Ytterbium) from single and multi-component batch and column systems using Sargassum polycystum biomass was studied. Ground and dried biomass was used in batch experiments with particle size 0.5-2.0 mm, while natural size cut and wet was used for packing the column. M.S.<br>Applied Physics<br>The interaction of oxygen with the (310) surface of LaB[subscript 6] has been investigated using Auger electron spectroscopy and mass spectrometric analysis. Measurements were made on both preadsorbed layers of oxygen and in fixed oxygen pressures. Desorption products observed were BO, B2O2, B2O3, and LaO. Oxygen saturation of the surface at room temperature was observed with adsorptions of 50L. Oxides on the surface appear as B2O3 and an unidentified lanthanum bearing oxide. The work described in this thesis uses oxygen NMR to probe the electronic system of rare earth co-doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, the prototypical high temperature superconducting cuprate (HTSC). Oxygen NMR turns out to be a powerful tool for this purpose. The nucleus is located directly inside the CuO_2 planes. It has a spin of 5/2 and a quadrupole moment and therefore can probe both, interactions with the magnetic hyperfine field as well as interactions through the electric field gradient of the crystal.
