Full textMetal ions of Rare Earth Elements (REE) have been discussed as performance enhancer in animal nutrition for several decades. In China, enormous enhancements for the performance of various species including crop were observed. Previously conducted studies under western conditions revealed highly contradictory results. These results were often unrepeatable without any apparent reasons. One study showed falling excrement ph values for rats when being fed nutrition supplemented by rare earth elements, while at the same time apparent digestion of crude nutrients increased. A follow-up work could neither reproduce falling excrement ph values nor increasing apparent digestion. Older in-vitro studies showed that rare earth elements are mainly selectively antimicrobial active at low ph values. Hence, this study’s working hypotheses were as follows: (1) Rare earth elements selectively affect the microbiome of the gastrointestinal tract under certain feed conditions, such that there is increased antimicrobial activity of acid-forming microbes and as a consequence rare earth elements show their effect. It was expected that REEs increase fattening performance and apparent digestibility. An alternative hypothesis was that (2) rare earth elements only show positive effects on apparent digestibility and fattening performance by a selective antimicrobial effect if feed composition already induced a low ph value milieu in the gastrointestinal tract. The thesis at hand used varying animal feedstuff with some of the feedstuff having varying carbohydrates, of which it was at least partially expected to ferment in colon and thus to affect the ph value. 48 rats (age at the beginning of study: 28 days) were partitioned into a control and a study group which received the same feedstuff like the control group but supplemented by REE. Both groups have been consecutively fed with five different types of feedstuff. For each feed study the excrement’s ph values were measured. The feedstuff was composed as follows: “Glucose I feedstuff” 10.35 % glucose in DM, “glucose I study feedstuff” 8.22 % glucose in DM, “glucose II feedstuff” 11.28 % glucose in DM, “glucose II study feedstuff” 11.96 % glucose in DM, “lactose feedstuff” 12.09 % lactose in DM, “lactose study feedstuff” 11.99 % lactose in DM, “pulp feedstuff” 15 % in air-dry mixture and “protein pea feedstuff’ 24 % in air-dry mixture. The study group received feedstuff mixtures with 0.05 % (by weight) Lancer. This product “Lancer 500” is a mixture of the rare earth elements lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, and neodymium. Feeding rare earth elements did not systematically change the digestibility of nutrients. There were occasional statistically significant differences but those differences were neither in the same direction not at a biologically meaningful scale. When applying the Lucas test (plotting intaken nutrients against apparently digested nutrients) and the modified Lucas test (plotting intaken nutrients against faecal excrement nutrients) no systematic effects of rare earth elements on the digestibility of nutrients could be shown. Using the Lucas test, the following true digestibility could be determined: Crude protein 88.5 %, calcium 67.7 %, phosphorus 71.1 %, sodium 94.4 %, potassium 97.5 %, copper 35.8 %, magnesium 51.3 %, manganese 25.5 %, zinc 51.6 %, and iron 51.1 %. Excrement ph values of study and control group did not systematically differ. The lowest ph valu of excrements measured was 6.34 when feeding “glucose I” feedstuff. A remarkable observation was that female rats of the study group had a permanent and statistically significantly increased feed consumption compared to the control group, without significantly affecting the differences of body weight. There was no apparent explanation of the below average digestibility of energy of these animals. The results of this study argue against the effects of rare earth elements on the performance by selective antimicrobial effects in the gastrointestinal tract and also against improvements in digestibility.
