Abstract:
This study investigates a variety of laptop configurations and their effects on posture and discomfort. There are several benefits to using laptops in an office setting. They conserve space and allow greater computing flexibility in meetings or business travel. One potential drawback of laptops is that the keyboard and monitor cannot be adjusted independently, which may lead to constrained postures and musculoskeletal discomfort. In this study, 14 users experienced six laptop configurations. The configurations varied in terms of laptop placement and the kinds of external peripherals (e.g. external monitor) that were used in conjunction with the laptop. Past findings showing increased neck flexion and discomfort with laptop use were replicated. However, the addition of peripheral devices to laptops seems to mitigate the problems previously associated with their use.

Abstract:
This paper studies whether and how information and communication technology (ICT) changes self-construal and cultural values in a developing country. Ethiopian children were given laptops in the context of an ICT for development scheme. We compared children who used laptops (n = 69) with a control group without laptops (n = 76) and a second control group of children whose laptop had broken down (n = 24). Results confirmed that after 1 year of laptop usage, the children’s self-concept had become more independent and children endorsed individualist values more strongly. Interestingly, the impact of laptop usage on cultural values was mediated by self-construal (moderated mediation). Importantly, modernization did not “crowd out” traditional culture: ICT usage was not associated with a reduction in traditional expressions (interdependent self-construal, collectivist values). Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

This paper aims to analyze the influence of laptop brand image on the purchasing intention of Chinese college students, and it further looks at the moderating role played by consumer ethnocentrism in the above causality, which helps to bridge the research gap in the domain. Employing the brand image theory and consumer ethnocentrism theory, and based on large-sample questionnaire surveys, this study reveals that brand image positively affects college students' purchasing intention of laptops, regardless of domestic or foreign laptop brands. What is more, besides playing a direct role in affecting purchasing intention, consumer ethnocentrism also plays a significant moderating role in affecting the effects of brand image on purchasing intention. It is found that high ethnocentric college students may not buy foreign laptops, even though the brand image of foreign laptops is superior. Overall, this paper has made important suggestions and implications for both corporate managers and policy makers.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to investigate the use of laptops in English language teaching, its benefits and disadvantages. Three classroom observations, six student interviews and three teacher interviews were carried out to answer the study’s research questions, namely, what are the benefits and disadvantages of using laptops in the teaching of English at schools under study? How do teachers solve technical and pedagogical problems related to the use of laptops? What kinds of IT-support and possibility to develop teaching skills required by laptops are available for teachers of English? Results of the study indicate that easy access to authentic English through laptops is a benefit when teaching English at two Swedish compulsory schools and one high school. Furthermore, the study has shown that laptops are beneficial tools when teaching writing proficiency and working with problem-solving tasks in the classroom. The results of the study have also pointed to the disadvantage in the use of laptops during classroom activities, which are caused by students who are engaged in browsing off-task websites. However, a solution to this could be to include these websites into English language learning activities. The data from the interviews with the three English language teachers have provided evidence about different possibilities for IT-support and IT-development for these teachers. This study makes it clear that a successful implementation of one-to-one laptop programs requires teachers who can invest their time and energy into learning new technology, IT-development provided by the school and municipality through courses, workshops and visits at IT-fairs and other schools with one-to-one laptop program as well as a functional IT-support.

Abstract:
Recognition of speech at the receiver end generally gets degraded in distant talking atmospheres of laptops, teleconfereing, video conferences and in hands free telephony, where the quality of speech gets contaminated and severely disturbed because of the additive noises. To make useful and effective, the exact speech signals has to be extracted from the noise signals and the user has to be given the clean speech. In such conditions the convenience of microphone array has been preferred as a means of civilizing the quality of arrested signals. A consequential growth in laptop technology and microphone array processing have made possible to improve intelligibility of speech while communication. So this contention target on reducing the additive noises from the original speech, beside design and use of different algorithms. In this thesis a multi-channel microphone array with its speech enhancement of signals to Wiener Beamformar and Generalized side lobe canceller (GSC) are used for Laptops in a noisy environment. Systems prescribed above were implemented, processed and evaluated on a computer using Mat lab considering SNR, SNRI as the main objective of quality measures. Systems were tested with two speech signals, among which one is Main speech signal and other is considered as Noise along with another random noise, sampling them at 16 KHz .Three Different source originations were taken into consideration with different input SNR’s of 0dB, 5dB, 10dB, 15dB, 20dB, 25dB. Simulation Results showed that Noise is been attenuated to a great extent. But Variations in SNR and SNRI has been observed, because of the different point origination of signals in the respective feilds.Variation in SNR and SNRI is been observed when the distance between the main speech originating point and microphone is too long compared to the noise signals. This states that origination of signals plays a huge role in maintaining the speech quality at the receiver end.<br>D.No 4-22, Gandla street, papanaidupeta-517526 chittoor district,Andhra pradesh India naveenkumarthupalli@gmail.com

It also finds out about the changes and maintains them in the program due to the inclusion of this kind of technology to it. The chosen institution is a participant member of the launching phase of this project called UCA (OCS - One Computer per Student) promoted by the MEC. To understand the role of a laptop technology in meeting the educational program and its various stages and instances of construction, it was believed to be necessary the use of historical concepts of technology and a program of study. Once, understanding that these concepts were forged throughout the history of mankind and in every moment of our history not only had an intentionality underlying social necessity but also the ideological criticism blamed by the ruling class. In this sense of understanding how it was handled the construction of the concept of the curriculum and the technology, and to whom they assisted and why, supports the consideration that lends itself regarding the OCS in the twentieth century. But, it also supports the search for a perception linked to "ground school" in a context where the primary symbiotic relationship between technology and subject takes place, and also where the prospectus is noticed and shaped according to the cultural and academic backgrounds of its interlocutors in a continuing relationship with the official guidelines. Development research through the empirical method of study and the technique of content analysis. In order to define the focus of analysis were developed semi-structured interviews with teachers and the administration of the Dom Alano du Noday. Besides the interviews with the mentioned above, it was analyzed documents produced by the brazilian federal government and also the selected school for the OCS project. Through the main results that emerged from the interviews, we can highlight the continuous maintaining on the prescribed prospectus of the institution, despite the occurrence of a temporary change in the distribution of workload throughout the school year, but it emphasizes strongly influenced by regulations of the public school system. However, it was also noticed changing in the prospectus in resulting actions from the interaction and the possibilities of access to information that laptops encouraged the school community.

Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2007.<br>This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 47-50).<br>Individuals have a particular set of tasks they need to accomplish or what might be called a "life pattern." These tasks must be accomplished within a particular set of places or "life spaces." What is the role of the laptop in defining these life spaces and patterns and how does it either enable or constrain an individual from acting out their life pattern within a particular life space? This study uses a variety of quantitative and qualitative analytical methods for understanding the adaptation of student behavior to new technologies on MIT campus with a focus on the Sloan School of Management. Laptops will only enable spatial flexibility if the nature of one's work ("life pattern") affords it (Norman, 1999), "mobility" or "flexibility" is perceived to be advantageous, and there are suitable behavior settings (Barker, 1989; Schoggen, 1989) within their "life space." Most students are not creating "a new office" (Duffy, 1997) or choosing "special places" (Mitchell, 2003) to work. They mostly choose to use a very limited range of locations, often similar to office-type spaces. Only an exceptional minority of most techno-enabled are becoming free roaming "neonomads" (Abbas, 2005).<br>(cont.) Rather than being more "mobile," most people are now more "connected" wherever they go (Castells, 2006). Instead, they might rather be labeled technologically enhanced cyborgs (Mitchell, 2003, Picon, 2000). Our relationship to the physical surrounding environment changes depending on the degree to which we require our technological enhancements and how much our cyborg selves are supported by that environment.<br>by Ezra Goldman.<br>M.C.P.
