Stefan, Peter. "Large scale in vitro expansion of mesenchymal stem cells." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2010. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14976/.

Full text
Abstract:
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can undergo self-renewal and differentiation into a variety of mature cell types. Thus, using MSCs for tissue engineering and other medical applications holds many promising advantages over normal somatic cells. However, exactly these characteristics make MSCs more difficult to grow and control in vitro. The aim of this research project was to investigate different culture systems for their utility to expand bone marrow derived MSCs in large quantities. A large scale expansion of MSCs is especially of interest since only a small number of bone marrow derived MSCs

Abstract:
The large-scale integration of wind generation into the power system brings great challenges to transmission expansion planning (TEP) and unit commitment (UC). The intermittence nature of wind generation needs to be fully considered in these two problems, which stimulates the research of this thesis. The selection of candidate lines is the prerequisite for the TEP problem. Considering the limitations of manual selection approach, a method to select candidate lines automatically is proposed, which consists of five stages to reinforce existing corridors and new corridors. Abstract:
Driven by a number of factors, the electric power industry is expected to undergo a paradigm shift with a considerably increased level of variable energy sources. A significant integration of such sources requires heavy transmission investments over geographically wide and large-scale networks. However, the stochastic nature of such sources, along with the sheer size of network systems, results in problems that may become intractable. Thus, the challenge addressed in this work is to design efficient and reasonably accurate models, strategies and tools that can solve large-scale TEP problems un

Abstract:
Experimental testing of large composite specimens under tension or shear is inherently challenging because the large required gripping force and resulting local stress concentration tend to break specimens near gripping sites, rather than desired gage sections. A method using expansive grout materials has been proposed since the mid 1990’s. However, there has been no well-established design guideline due to lack of understanding of the gripping pressure developed by the expansive grout material. Key properties including the elastic modulus and linear expansion coefficient are difficult to meas

Abstract:
We considered a Bayesian approach to nonlinear inverse problems in which the unknown quantity is a high dimension spatial field. The Bayesian approach contains a natural mechanism for regularization in the form of prior information, can incorporate information from heterogeneous sources and provides a quantitative assessment of uncertainty in the inverse solution. The Bayesian setting casts the inverse solution as a posterior probability distribution over the model parameters. Karhunen-Lo'eve expansion and Discrete Cosine transform were used for dimension reduction of the random spatial field.
