Abstract:
Large-scale surveys are an appealing research design option for those wishing to collect data from many participants dispersed across different settings. This chapter describes several critical issues that must be considered when developing and conducting large-scale surveys in deaf education: aligning with a theoretical rationale, considering sample characteristics and potential confounds, piloting study measures, and developing an analysis plan. The chapter provides examples of ways to capture the heterogeneous demographics inherent within deaf education, ranging from individual characteristics such as identity, language use, and professional experience to educational setting characteristics such as program models and available accommodations. The chapter provides recommendations for how to instill trust and be mindful of participant fatigue during the recruitment process. The chapter ends with strategies for making survey recruitment materials, test directions, and items accessible for a diverse study population.

Abstract:
This chapter examines individual-level factors that may influence legitimacy beliefs towards global governance institutions. The chapter surveys the full breadth of existing political science research in order to chart a forward course for empirical studies of individual-level sources of legitimacy beliefs. The chapter’s threefold core argument maintains, first, that global governance scholarship needs to build on previous insights on legitimacy beliefs from comparative politics and social psychology. Second, research on beliefs in the legitimacy of global governance institutions needs to look comparatively across countries, institutions, issue areas, social groups, and time. Third, future research on sources of legitimacy in global governance can acquire better measures through the use of large-scale surveys and survey experiments.

Bergman, Marcelo. The Police in Latin America. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190608774.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the limited success of the police in improving public safety in most countries of the region, showing that in most countries law enforcement agencies have been unable to lead effective anti-crime programs. Police structures and crime-fighting strategies are surveyed, and it is argued that police forces generally reacted slowly and erratically against rising crime, that they did not develop strong information systems to fight organized crime, and that they have lacked the support of citizens due to the past repression and corruption. Using arrest, survey, and administrative data this text underscores two variables that correlate with rising criminality: a) the failure to incorporate modern, large-scale policing techniques, particularly those that make use of information and intelligence, and b) the failure of police to adjust to new standards after transitions to democracies, undermining bonds of trust between police and citizens.

Abstract:
Concerns about justice of one sort or another are ever-present in the news and in our social relationships. Sometimes these are large-scale concerns (ethnic cleansing, war crimes, sexual harassment), while other times they are small-scale (slights, broken promises, tokens of disrespect). This volume is focused not on just institutions but instead on just individuals. This chapter surveys the contributions of the volume to thinking about what being just persons involves and how we become just.

Abstract:
Chapter 6 deals with the remaining mysteries in cosmology—dark matter, dark energy, and inflationary expansion—and the experiments aimed at solving them. It reviews the evidence for dark matter, and experiments to detect the microscopic particles proposed as its constituents: weakly interacting massive particles and invisible axions. Contrasts are drawn between the failure to understand the scale of dark energy theoretically and the ambitious new survey telescopes, such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (or LSST), that aim to constrain its equation of state. The theoretical concepts and possible experimental signatures of cosmic inflation are described. Searches for possible imprints from primordial inflation-induced gravitational waves on the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB polarization) are discussed in the context of the pioneering first detection by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (or LIGO) of gravitational waves from distant black-hole mergers. Philosophical questions regarding the falsifiability of inflation are raised.

Abstract:
The boom in survey research, the increasing internationalization of political science, and the development of large-scale comparative projects have renewed the study of political culture and invalidated the notion of a French “exceptionalism.” But French scholars, influenced by Marxism, social history, and Bourdieu’s legacy of “critical sociology,” still have a different understanding of political culture, and prefer to use other concepts such as ideology. After a rapid overview of the founding studies and debates, this chapter shows how French research on political culture or cultures in the plural developed in its own way, and outlines the major challenges it is facing today on issues such as race and ethnicity, gender, globalization, and poverty.

Abstract:
This chapter examines issues of fairness in the organization of global agricultural markets. The discussion begins with a survey of the challenges in feeding the world and the debates between “market fundamentalists” who defend strongly pro-market, pro-globalization approaches and critics who deny that such challenges can be addressed fairly through markets alone or through particular forms of market organization. Conceptions of fairness that market fundamentalists and critics alike agree upon, as well as additional norms of fairness defended by critics, are applied to four prominent aspects of global market organization in the agricultural sector. They include: trade subsidies and protectionist restrictions, economic development strategies that often leave lesser developed nations caught in a commodity trap, supply-chain management though contract agriculture, and patterns of large-scale farmland acquisition known as the global land grab.

SI, Strong. Legal Reasoning Across Commercial Disputes. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198842842.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book offers a novel, multi-pronged empirical analysis of legal reasoning in commercial disputes, comparing data across three different axes: the judicial–arbitral divide, the domestic–international divide, and the common law–civil law divide. In so doing, this text provides important insights into how judges and arbitrators resolve complex commercial disputes in both national and international settings and conducts important comparisons between different procedures. The study includes three different empirical methodologies: a large-scale international survey, a series of semi-structured interviews, and a detailed quantitative (coding) exercise. Results from the three research strands are cross-verified through various triangulation techniques and tested against conventional wisdom regarding legal reasoning. This work will help judges, arbitrators, practitioners, clients, and scholars understand how legal reasoning is conducted in different settings, thereby improving the practical and understanding of how commercial disputes are resolved.
