- tenu pour auteur antimythique du fait de ses propos de jeunesse ou il deplorait l'absence pour le sud-ouest d'un mythe central pouvant donner naissance a une "grande litterature", mcmurtry voit actuellement l'ere de la frontiere comme un "age d'or" et le cavaliereleveur comme une figure heroique, voire christique. - le choix par mcmurtry du cadre narratif et du theme est percu comme imprevisible, pourtant le schema et l'interetxtualite de ses oeuvres sont revelateurs d'une vision sociale et culturelle entropique, temoin de son angoisse devant l'etiolement de la res americana, processus susceptible selon lui d'etre inverse par un retour a l'ethique de l'amerique d'antan. - encense pour son intelligence des femmes, mcmurtry met en scene des personnages feminins profondement negatifs dont la "liberation" est au coeur de la desorganisation qui affecte son cadre urbain. - bien qu'encore considere comme "ecrivain regional" (meme s'il a cesse d'etre un auteur mineur), mcmurtry produit une "litterature de la ville" qui n'est pas sans interet. Abstract:
Mokslo filosofijoje maždaug nuo XX amžiaus 60 – tųjų metų, mokslo plėtros problema yra tapusi viena iš dominuojančių problemų ir argumentų šaltiniu. Brandžiausią mokslo plėtros analizę yra pateikęs Larry Laudanas. Laudanas apibendrina induktyvistų, deduktyvistų ir istorinės mokslo filosofijos krypties teoretikų mokslo plėtros modelius. Laudano mokslo plėtros teorija turi trūkumų, svarbiausias iš jų – neapibrėžta mokslo samprata. Probleminis šio darbo laukas yra mokslo filosofijos normatyvinės ir nenormatyvinės krypties ginčai. Laudanas siekia pateikti adekvačiausią mokslo racionalistų ir mokslo iracionalistų ginčų, mokslo plėtros įvertinimo, sprendimo versiją. Darbe ginama tezė: Larry Laudano pasiūlymas mokslo plėtrą vertinti remiantis faktiniu, metodologiniu ir aksiologiniu teorijų prasminių lygmenų skyrimu yra pranašesnis už kitų mokslo metodologų pasiūlymus, tačiau šis mokslo plėtros vertinimo modelis yra nepakankamai pagrįstas ir nepakankamai apibrėžtas. Pagrindiniai šio darbo šaltiniai yra L. Laudano „Science and Values“ (Laudan 1984) ir „Progress and Its Problems“ (Laudan 1997), taip pat T. S. Kuhno „Mokslo revoliucijų struktūra“ (Kuhn 2003). Darbe remiamasi Laudano mokslo aiškinimo ir tinklinės teorijos sampratos poziciją kritikuojančiais šaltiniais (Folse 1990, Fuller 1986, Lugg 1986, Quinn 1986, Stanford 2000, Worrall 1989). [toliau žr. visą tekstą]<br>Since the 1960s the problem of justification of scientific development has been an important problem in the philosophy of science. Larry Laudan provides a mature analysis of scientific development. Laudan generalises the models of scientific advancement provided by inductivists, deductivists and the historical school of philosophy of science. Unfortunately, Laudan's theory of scientific development has important shortcomings, the most important of which is that concept of science is not defined. The problem field of this work is the controversy of normative and non-normative positions in the philosophy of science. Laudan aims to provide an adequate solution that accounts for the differences of evaluations of scientific advancement in the theories of scientific rationalists and scientific irrationalists. The following thesis is defended: Larry Laudan's suggestion to separate the factual, methodological and axiological layers of scientific theories when evaluating scientific advancement is superior to other suggestions, but this model of evaluation of scientific advancement is not well-founded and inadequately defined. Primary sources of this work are „Science and Values“ (Laudan 1984), „Progress and Its Problems“ (Laudan 1997) and „The Structure of Scientific Revolutions“ (Kuhn 2003). Achieving an approach solidly based on Bible Scriptures, using the tools of secular psychology without betraying the "Biblical premise". Which encourages belief in the inerrant Bible and the grace of Christ almighty, believing that there is a personal and infinite God that revealed themself purposely in the written word, the Bible, and personally in the living word, Jesus Christ. In Crabb's approach the "mistaken belief , produce negative feelings and behaviors that prevent us to provide the need of a relationship with the Sacred. The purpose of the theory is focused on correcting negative thoughts and to promote the appropriate thought to produce correct behaviors and feelings. The focus is on the thoughts. The feelings of resentment, guilt and anxiety are the focal point of the disorder produced. Therefore, the task of a biblical counselor is directed to comprehend and unveil people's basic personal needs defined as meaning. Moreover let them perceive that this meaning is only attained through the recognition of their own value and importance in Christ, which Crabb defines as security. His theory is advised to leaders because it involves a transformative approach, highlighting the faith in God and the appreciation of the Bible as the Word of God.<br>Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo explicitar o modelo de aconselhamento bíblico de Larry Crabb, a partir do olhar da psicologia e da Bíblia para trazer uma integração cuidadosa. De maneira que se alcance uma abordagem solidamente baseada nas Escrituras, fazendo uso das ferramentas da psicologia secular sem trair a premissa bíblica . A qual estimula a crença na Bíblia inerrante e na graça do Cristo todo poderoso, acreditando em um Deus pessoal e infinito que se revelou propositalmente na palavra escrita, a Bíblia, e pessoalmente na palavra viva, Jesus Cristo. Na abordagem de Crabb a crença errada produz sentimentos e comportamentos negativos que impede o indivíduo de suprir sua necessidade de se relacionar com o Sagrado. O propósito do modelo é centrado em corrigir os pensamentos negativos e promover o pensamento adequado para produzir comportamentos corretos e sentimentos corretos. O enfoque está nos pensamentos. Os sentimentos de ansiedade, de culpa e ressentimento é o resultado central da desordem causada. Portanto a tarefa do aconselhador bíblico é voltada a compreender e desvelar as necessidades pessoais básicas das pessoas, definidas como significado. E fazê-lo compreender que esse significado só é alcançado através do reconhecimento de seu valor e sua importância em Cristo, o que Crabb nomeia de segurança. Sua proposta é aconselhada a líderes, pois envolve uma abordagem transformadora, destacando a fé em Deus e a valorização da Bíblia como Palavra de Deus.

CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO<br>Esta dissertação busca analisar a proposta filosófica de Larry Laudan para a superação dos impasses epistemológicos gerados no debate entre a concepção fundacionista de ciência dos positivistas lógicos e a crítica relativista que foi promovida pelos epistemólogos da virada histórica. Aqui serão discutidas as principais questões levantadas neste confronto no tocante à metodologia da ciência. Para tal, nos deteremos sobre a gênese e sobre colapso do naturalismo lingüístico-descritivo do Círculo de Viena, mostrando o enfraquecimento de suas teses centrais ora pela análise de suas contradições internas, ora pela abordagem das críticas que lhe foram dirigidas por outras escolas de pensamento, em especial, a crítica histórica. Por fim, nos deteremos sobre o modelo metametodológico de Laudan e sua perspectiva naturalista de metodologia científica baseada em regras normativas.<br>This essay seeks to analyze Larry Laudan`s philosophical proposal to overcome the epistemological predicaments raised in the discussion between positivists and historical turn`s relativists. Here, we will discuss the main questions raised in this confrontation about the scientific methodology. In such case, we will detain over the origin and breakdown of the linguistic-descriptive naturalism created by logical positivism. We will present the feebleness of the positivist`s central thesis, unveiling the internal contradictions of the proposal and the critiques from others schools of thought, in special, the criticism from historical turn`s point of view. At last, we will focus Laudan`s metamethodological model of science`s philosophy and its naturalist perspective based in normative rules.

Abstract:
The objective of this essay is to present both the reason behind the Egyptian democratization failure, as well as the cause of the success of the Tunisian democracy. The methodology of this essay is composed of a comparative democratization study, which includes a most similar systems-design method. The studies will try to pinpoint the key components of the result of the democratization, by using four of Larry Diamond’s nine internal and external democratization factors, which are presented in his book: ‘The Spirit of Democracy’. The results of this study indicate that Egypt had a far larger and more influential military force and also a critical economy, despite less international support for their democratization. Tunisia has a more democratic-oriented civil society and through democratic assistance from the European Union, a peaceful transition into a democratic system was possible. In this essay, a far deeper analysis of the democratization process will be highlighted, including how to prove how these essential factors caused the different outcomes of the Arabic spring protests.

Il presente elaborato offre una proposta di traduzione commentata di quattro scene del dramma di Larry Kramer, “The Normal Heart”. La tesi consiste di tre capitoli: il primo di questi si concentra sulla biografia e sulla produzione artistica dell'autore, con un focus particolare su The Normal Heart, di cui analizzo le tematiche, e sul contesto storico-sociale in cui l'opera si inserisce. Questo capitolo offre inoltre un excursus sulla letteratura sull'AIDS e presenta le quattro scene di cui propongo la traduzione nel secondo capitolo. È nel terzo e ultimo capitolo che viene poi esposta un'analisi commentata della traduzione, in cui sono messe in luce le difficoltà relative alla traduzione e le strategie con le quali ho risolto i problemi traduttivi. In particolar modo, vengono presi in considerazione il rispetto del criterio della “recitabilità” e i problemi relativi alla traduzione del linguaggio colloquiale, delle forme verbali che non hanno equivalenti precisi nella lingua d'arrivo e delle espressioni volgari. Seguono infine le conclusioni, in cui espongo alcune riflessioni personali sul lavoro eseguito.

<p> Trumpeter Larry Black, now retired from a thirty-three-year career with the Atlanta Symphony, studied with legendary trumpet pedagogue Vincent Cichowicz from 1964 to 1966. During this short time, Cichowicz transformed Black from a non-collegiate student receiving lessons on a trial basis to a young professional with master's degree from Northwestern University, where Cichowicz taught from 1959 to 1998. Because Black has preserved his entire collection of lesson assignments from this period, spanning sixty-three leaves in two separate notepads, it is possible to form an impression of Cichowicz's pedagogical style. Black's data indicates that Cichowicz prioritized sound quality over musical complexity, believed that music of minimum difficulty would yield maximum progress, and stood by these convictions even in the face of time-sensitive issues such as performances or auditions. </p><p> Black's curriculum represents but one example of Cichowicz's methodology. Because Cichowicz himself wrote only generally (and briefly) about his pedagogical philosophies and chose not to outline a curriculum of musical examples in the form of a method book, it would be presumptuous to suppose that a single student's assignments could adequately compensate for this void. Consequently, this research will likely prove particularly useful to other former Cichowicz students who can measure Black's assignments against their own. The trumpet community at large should hope that one day such students might choose to publicize their own curricula, and so enlarge the existing body of data. Only then might a comprehensive view of Cichowicz's teaching, not only in theory but also in detailed practice, begin to emerge.</p>

This paper reads Larry Beinhart’s novel The Librarian (2004) and its nonfiction companion Fog Facts (2005) as a double attempt at writing that is politically invested in representing reality but that nevertheless is openly aware of the postmodern crisis of representation. In this sense, I read both books as indicative of a broad cultural search for forms of writing that engage their readers’ reality without simply attempting to return to a less complicated moment before postmodernism. The paper situates both books within crucial textual contexts: a broad ‘epistemic panic’ about the facts and reality at the time, a surge of political nonfiction published in response to George W. Bush’s Presidency, and a longer tradition of political fiction. Tracing how the novel struggles with its nonfiction aspects and how the nonfiction book relies on fiction to make its point, I then look at how the two books evoke political affect to have a realist appeal of sorts despite their insistence on the precarious nature of all realist representation. Reading both books as distinctly popular, mass-market products and thus bringing together the debate around post-postmodernism from literary studies with an interest in reading pleasures informed by popular culture studies, I argue that the two books constitute decidedly popular attempts at a new, meta-aware yet politically engaged textuality.

De nouveaux auteurs québecois comme Normand Chaurette, Carole Fréchette et Larry Tremblay se tournent alors vers de nouvelles écritures théâtrales qui s'interrogent constamment sur la remise en cause de l'esthétique théâtrale traditionnelle. En tournant le dos aux différentes formes du théâtre traditionnel comme la notion du dénouement apportant la solution finale du récit et l'enchaînement logique de l'action, ils créent de nouveaux textes qui sont extrêmement difficiles à comprendre. Considérées parfois comme illisibles et difficiles à jouer, les pièces de Chaurette, Fréchette et Tremblay, qui sont par ailleurs connues aussi bien au Québec qu'à l'étranger, n'ont pas cessé de lancer un défi aux nouveaux metteurs en scène qui n'arrivent pas toujours à comprendre l'univers énigmatique de ces trois auteurs atypiques. Est-ce en fin de compte un théâtre complexe et déroutant? Quelles sont les spécificités de ce théâtre étiqueté comme nouveau et original? Serait-il un théâtre piégé? C'est ce que nous tenterons de découvrir tout au long de cette étude financée par le Conseil Régional<br>There is around 1980 that the postmodern theater appears in Quebec. Many new writers as Normand Chaurette, Carole Fréchette and Larry Tremblay created new theatrical writings that have wondered about to challenge the traditional theatrical aesthetics. On refusing the different forms of the traditional theatrical playwriting as the concept of outcome including the final solution of the story and the logical argument of action, they invented new texts that are extremely difficult to understand. Sometimes considered unreadable and difficult to play, parts of Chauray, Frechette and Tremblay, who are known as well in Québec as abroad, can't stopped throwing a challenge to the theater's directors who were not able to understand the enigmatic universe of these three authors atypical. Is it finally a complex theater? What are the characteristics of this theater called new and original? Would it be a drama bomb? In 2016, the Australian composer, virtuoso pianist, and pedagogue Larry Sitsky (b. 1934) completed a three-volume set of 155 graded pieces for pianists entitled Century. The work focuses on certain twentieth-century innovations with regard to notation and associated piano technique(s)—distinctive issues not commonly explored pedagogically. This study addresses specific notational and associated technical challenges in selected pieces from Century. The study also provides performative and pedagogical suggestions derived both from Sitsky himself and from the author. The following notational categories are explored: clusters, feathered notation, and non-pitched notation. This research provides pianists with tools that may enable an understanding of specific twentieth-century notation and of associated pianistic techniques. Furthermore, the study establishes Century as a valuable, although hitherto neglected, pedagogical resource.

Abstract:
The poet Larry Levis often employed ekphrasis as an elegiac device—particularly with his verbal descriptions of photographic images—to explore human suffering and reconcile feelings of loss. Through the ekphrastic mode, Levis could juxtapose otherwise disparate images, manipulating their temporal and spatial relationships, to achieve what he conceived an authentic portrait of the human experience. The poet, through his verbal descriptions of photographic images, does not try to evade the pain or joy of being human; instead, he confronts his grief directly and, in so doing, transcends that suffering to better understand himself and his own human position. This thesis analyzes the following poems by Larry Levis: “My Only Photograph of Weldon Kees,” “García Lorca: A Photograph of the Granada Cemetery, 1966,” “The Assimilation of the Gypsies,” “Sensationalism,” and “Photograph: Migrant Worker, Parlier, California, 1967.”

Objetivo: Artigos jornalísticos publicados no diário norte-americano The New York Times por Larry Rohter, seu correspondente no Brasil, tomam como base uma gama de imagens e expectativas sobre o país que seu público possa ter e reconhecer como válidas. Esta pesquisa procura identificar as estratégias textuais adotadas por Rohter para reproduzir, alterar, questionar, negar ou criar representações brasileiras. Métodos: Por meio da análise de discurso crítica, são avaliados os mecanismos de tradução de conceitos próprios do Brasil para um público estrangeiro, a partir de conhecimentos básicos compartilhados e aproximações por analogia com similares norte-americanos. Também é analisada a influência e o reforço de imagens brasileiras esperadas e das expectativas sobre medidas a serem tomadas no campo econômico e político do país. Resultados: Ainda que as narrativas das reportagens partam de imagens brasileiras estereotipadas, quebram-se as expectativas pela eclosão de eventos desviantes, que rompem com o que é esperado pelo público. O desequilíbrio estabelecido por Rohter aumenta o interesse em notícias menos urgentes; essa estratégia não é tão necessária em situações marcadamente conflituosas, que representam desvios na ordem social naturalmente pressupostos nos textos.<br>Objective: Journalistic articles published in the The New York Times, by Larry Rohter, the newspapers correspondent in Brazil, are based on a full range of impressions and notions regarding the country that his readers might have and might recognize as valid. This study seeks to identify the textual strategies followed by Rohter to reproduce, change, question, deny, or create Brazilian descriptions. Methods: By means of critical discourse analysis, mechanisms for translating concepts peculiar to Brazil for foreign understanding are evaluated, taken from basic shared knowledge and analogies with similar American concepts. The influence and reinforcement of anticipated Brazilian imagery and speculations regarding measures to be taken in the economic and political areas of the country are also analyzed. Results: Even though the storylines call up stereotypical images of Brazil, presuppositions are disrupted by distracting events that emerge and break with what is expected. The imbalance established by Rohter ends up increasing reader interest in less urgent news items, but this strategy is not as necessary in situations that are obviously conflicting, and that represent deviations in the social order, which are naturally presumed in the texts.

Saved, By Becoming a Slave to the Rhythm!, is a choreographic work that demonstrates how an individual finds purpose through a rite of passage filled with freedom, music, and movement of the House dancing scene. Saved, reveals how DJ Larry Levan gained recognition from the community of the Paradise Garage Club, as one of the best DJs of his time. The work is split into three sections community, individual, and movement. The community section highlights the universal love, freedom, and multiculturalism of Paradise Garage that was generated by the charismatic control of Larry Levan's DJ mastery. Levan's charismatic mastery is what moved the Paradise Garage community to deem him one of the best DJs in House music history. The community section transitions into the individual section. The individual section showcases the demons of Levan's life. A solo, performed to the words of Levan's best friend, Frankie Knuckles, displays how his excessive lifestyle of drugs and sex became the key to his demise. The third section is an homage to Larry Levan, and members of the Paradise Garage community whom have passed on. I title this section the movement section, because it unveils the progression and stability of the House dance community. In addition to this cultural stability, the movement terminology of House dance is solidified. I want the audience to leave Saved, By Becoming a Slave to the Rhythm!, inspired to search for their purpose in life, find it, and live it lovingly, joyfully, and peacefully.

Religiös etik i miljöarbetet Uppsatsen bygger på en primär fråga och det är huruvida religion kan bidra med en etisk aspekt i miljöarbetet, jag har även försökt att besvara en sekundär frågeställning som avser hur miljön med hjälp av en religion ur miljöetiskt perspektiv kan förbättras för människor, djur och natur.           För att besvara frågeställningen har jag använt mig av en komparativ studie där jag har jämfört Larry L Rasmussens Earth community, earth ethics och Dalai Lamas Etik för ett nytt millenium. Carolyn Merchants Naturens Död utgör min bakgrund och är det perspektiv jag antagit i undersökningen, jag valde författaren för att få en feministisk historisk analys av de händelser som lett fram till det moderna vetenskapssamhället och problemställningen vi står inför idag.           Resultatet av undersökningen visar att det största ansvaret ligger på individen men att ett etiskt system baserat på världsreligionernas centrala värderingar kan vara till stor hjälp när eget ansvar och etiska överväganden ska avgöras. Kristendomen har genom dualism och mans-centrering skapat ett destruktivt förhållningssätt till naturen och kvinnor vilket bidragit till många av dagens miljöproblem, klassåtskillnader och andra orättvisor, därför måste kristendomen reformeras till att se människan som en del av naturen och ta beslut som har en helhet i åtanke då hela världen samverkar i ett enda system. Det är speciellt viktigt att kristendomen tar ett stort ansvar att förvandla den västerländska världen från en materialistisk till en ansvarstagande kultur, därefter kan den bidra ur ett miljöetiskt perspektiv.           Dalai Lamas etik utgår från invidnivå och eget ansvar som inte förutsätter en religiös övertygelse av den anledningen att religion och andlighet är skilda saker. Religion är bön, ritualer och tro på en metafysisk sfär, andlighet har med den mänskliga andens egenskaper att göra det vill säga medkänsla, tålamod och ansvar. En etik som hjälper människor att ta ansvar och hantera lidande kan vara till stor hjälp för att bidra till psykologisk och emotionell hälsa i västländerna. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att religionens centrala värderingar och etik har mycket att bidra med ur ett miljöetiskt perspektiv, det bör dock skiljas ut från en särskild trosinriktning då etik, moral och ansvar inte ska förutsätta en religiös övertygelse av något slag.

A investigação aqui realizada examina o papel que os valores cognitivos e nãocognitivos desempenham nas práticas científicas. Essa análise fundamenta-se em uma comparação entre os modelos propostos por Hugh Lacey e por Larry Laudan para explicar a dinâmica da atividade científica. Veremos que, no modelo desenvolvido por Lacey, cuja idéia central reside nas estratégias de pesquisa, ambos os tipos de valor possuem papéis legítimos na atividade científica. Já no modelo reticulado, proposto por Laudan, o autor admite apenas os valores cognitivos como constituintes da racionalidade científica. A partir de uma comparação entre ambos os modelos, pretendemos mostrar que o modelo de Lacey parece ser mais abrangente do que o modelo reticulado, na medida em que este último poderia ser considerado como uma parte do primeiro.<br>The present investigation examines the role of cognitive and non-cognitive values in scientific practices. This analysis is based on a comparison between the models proposed by Hugh Lacey and Larry Laudan to explain the dynamics of scientific activity. We will see that in Laceys model, whose main idea are the strategies of investigation, both kinds of values have legitimate roles in scientific activity. In the reticulated model, proposed by Laudan, the author admits only cognitive values as constitutive of scientific rationality. Based on a comparison between both models, we will try to show that Laceys model seems broader than the reticulated model, in the sense that the reticulated one could be considered as a part of Laceys model.

Larry L. Fleming is a prominent figure in American church music, widely known for his compositions and choral arrangements as well as his creative approach to concert programming as the conductor the National Lutheran Choir. No formal research has yet been done on Fleming, and I believe it is a fitting time for an examination of his contributions to choral music. In this study I will examine the unique choral programming techniques utilized by Larry Fleming in his annual Christmas Festival with the National Lutheran Choir. In particular, (1) his frequent use of short, fragmentary excerpts of larger musical works, (2) his use of sacred poetry from non-biblical sources for narration, and (3) the elimination of composer credits and composition titles in the body of the printed program. Audiences appreciate thematic programming,¹ and Fleming's methods offer tremendous opportunity for inventiveness on the part of conductors when planning concerts. I therefore contend that each of the three programming innovations listed above are viable and creative ideas other conductors could adopt in putting together their own thematic programs. In order to demonstrate this assertion, I created an original choral Christmas program utilizing his techniques. While the model program produced for this study replicates several of Fleming's programming innovations exactly as he used them I certainly do not recommend that conductors create concerts that are mere imitations of those produced by Fleming. It is my hope, rather, that this sample program will demonstrate the possibilities in creative programming, and will perhaps activate the imagination of conductors to devise their own unique approaches to programming. Since some readers may find my use of certain Fleming programming innovations controversial, particularly those related to the excerpting and adaptation of musical and poetic sources, this study will conclude with a brief look at how the philosophical issue of artistic license may affect the use of these innovations.

My thesis seeks to examine the relationship that exists between queer selfidentification and heterosexual hegemonic/heteronormative power in three works of and about the AIDS era. Working from feminist and queer theory perspectives, I first chart the way in which a problematic identity—be that identity a non-identity of utter invisibility, a sick identity, a dangerous identity, or (most commonly) an identity of utter hedonism disconnected from any notions of attachment, affection, or love beyond the physical sexual act—has been and is still wholly adopted by some. I do this principally with a close reading of Renaud Camus' 1981 novel Tricks, as well as with substantial historical grounding. I assert that this is not just a problem in queer literature, but in queer life which queer literature deeply reflects. Through a close reading of Tony Kushner's play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, I seek to illustrate the consequences of accepting entirely and without question a constructed and problematic identity for gay men. Historical examination also comes strongly into play through correspondence and personal narratives of men who lived through (and died in) the AIDS era, casualties of war of queer self-definition. Employing a close literary analysis of Larry Duplechan's 1986 novel Blackbird, my thesis seeks to chart a way to a stable, holistic, queer identity negotiated from a position of strength. In a larger sense my thesis explicates constraints upon queer identity intended to limit queer people to a heteronomous, damaged, vulnerable social position. I raise awareness of these constraints in attempt to navigate a way around them with the ultimate destination of this navigation being a perpetually increasing humanization of a historically and institutionally dehumanized population.

This dissertation presents a comprehensive qualitative study of the decision-making aspects of emergency department (ED) triage at a large urban Trauma I hospital in the Southeast. Specifically, this study addresses the following research questions: (1) What do triage nurses perceive as the primary role of the triage process? (2) How do triage nurses interpret patient performances? These questions are explored through illuminating the intricacies of triage decision-making by the use of semi-structured interviews and observations. The findings of this study indicate: (1) a better understanding of the triage decision- making process yielding more practical insights related to the informal, emergent, and often improvisational ways patients are received, categorized, and treated was needed, and (2) providing a clearer understanding of the processes involved in sorting patients may provide much-needed insight regarding clinical concerns and/or issues regarding patient categorization, adverse clinical events, and excessive patient wait times. These findings are of particular importance due to the widespread overuse of EDs for nonemergent care. Essentially, EDs are designed for patients to visit due to an alteration in their physical and/or mental state. Once a patient enters the ED, a medical professional is tasked with the responsibility of interpreting the physical and/or mental state of the patient, which is generally achieved by interpreting the patient story - the precipitating event that brought them into the ED. What this study contributes to the literature is a deeper understanding of the communicative processes that ED triage nurses leverage to make sense of patient stories.

Technical indicators are used by experts in stock trading. The purpose of this report is to investigate whether or not some indicators perform better when applied to stocks of specific market sectors. The investigation was conducted by implementing one algorithm for each of three different technical indicators, Relative Strength Index, Moving Average Convergence-Divergence, and Larry Williams %R. Each algorithm considered one trading strategy. Three market sectors defined by the GICS were included in the tests, Consumer Staples, Utilities, Information Technology. For each of these sectors at least one stock from each industry were tested. Results suggest that the performance of the Relative Strength Index indicator may be related to the sector of the stock to which it is applied, while %R showed no such indication, and MACD showed only a slight performance deviation between sectors. Further and more in-depth studies are required to confirm the results and conclusions drawn in this report.

This essay aims to explain why Colombia has not consolidated into a liberal democracy between the years 1991 to 2015. To examine the purpose of this essay five interactive arenas are analyzed in order to describe to which extent Colombia is affected by the various arenas. Three questions are being discussed and answered; to which extent have the political society and civil society affected the consolidation of a liberal democracy, to which extent have rule of law and the state bureaucracy affected the consolidation of a liberal democracy and, to which extent have the economic society affected the consolidation of a liberal democracy.The theoretical framework is based upon theories regarding different types of democracy and democratic consolidation. The essay is a theory consuming case study, with descriptive questions and explanatory approach. The framework is used to qualitatively illuminate empirical material to the study research questions. The conclusions of this essay shows that Colombia has not consolidated into a liberal democracy because of large illegal activities, physical attacks from non-state groups, widespread distrust of the political system and absence of conflict resolution through a democratic process.

Esta tesis doctoral examina la representación de la masculinidad y la identidad nacional en las novelas de Larry McMurtry Lonesome Dove y en las de James Welch Fools Crow y The Heartsong of Charging Elk. Uno de los temas de estudio principales es el encuentro con el Otro, argumentándose que esta confrontación ha posibilitado la creación de un ideal de masculinidad en el héroe del género del Western a la vez que ha facilitado la supresión de la masculinidad tradicional del indio americano. El estudio pone de manifiesto las serias consequencias que el mito del Oeste ha tenido en la masculinidad americana, consecuencias que no se ciñen al plano narrativo sino que trascienden a la vida real donde el imaginario colectivo americano continúa considerando que los mitos del Oeste forman parte esencial de la identidad masculina. <br/>El capítulo uno justifica el por qué del estudio comparativo de las obras mencionadas. Investiga además la construcción de la masculinidad hegemónica en la figura narrativa del vaquero americano, así como la conexión entre identidad nacional americana y masculinidad hegemónica. <br/>El capítulo dos analiza la presencia del Oeste histórico en la narrativa de Larry McMurtry y James Welch, evaluando la perceptión de la realidad histórica de los dos autores en su obra de no ficción antes de que éstos conviertan los hechos históricos en material para sus novelas. <br/>El capítulo tres analiza la naturaleza ambigua de los protagonistas de Lonesome Dove así como los problemas con los que se encuentra el autor a la hora de evidenciar el código masculinista del género del Western. En este capítulo también se somete a estudio el código de fraternidad masculina y la apropiación de la masculinidad del indio americano, procesos que llevan a perfilar la identidad nacional del vaquero americano.<br/>Por último, el capítulo cuatro estudia la reconceptualización de la masculinidad tradicional del indio americano en Fools Crow y The Heartsong of Charging Elk y las reflexiones del autor sobre el indio americano urbano y sobre conceptos como el indigenismo.<br>This doctoral dissertation examines the representation of masculinity and national identity in Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove and James Welch's Fools Crow and The Heartsong of Charging Elk. It particularly considers the meeting with the external Other and how this confrontation has shaped the construction of certain masculinity ideals for the Western hero and erased traditional notions of masculinity for the Native American male. The study points at the devastating consequences that the myth of the West has had on American masculinity. This is not only restricted to a narrative level but transcends to the real life sphere where the collective imaginarium still regards the foundational myths of the West as constitutive part of the American male identity. <br/>Chapter one states the reasons why a comparative analysis of the novels offers a new perspective on the subject of conflicting masculinity. It also examines the construction of hegemonic masculinity in the cowboy figure as well as the connection between American national identity and hegemonic manhood.<br/>Chapter two assesses the accuracy of the historical West portrayed in Larry McMurtry and James Welch's narratives. It focuses on some of their non-fictional work to consider their perception of historical facts before they are diluted in their fictionalized world. <br/>Chapter three discusses the conflicting nature of McMurtry's cowboy protagonists in Lonesome Dove as well as the problems the author runs into when exposing the masculinist code of the Western genre. It also deals with the subject of appropriated Native American manhood and fraternal bonding as a means to shape the cowboy's national identity. <br/>Finally, chapter four considers Welch's reconceptualization of traditional Native American masculinity as well as his reflections about indigenousness and the urban Native American.
