Cancer is a dangerous disease causing the most deaths in the world today and around 550,000 deaths in America per year (American Cancer Society). Larynx cancer data was recorded by Kardaun (1983). The data was collected at a Dutch hospital during 1970 – 1978. Ninety male adults with cancer of larynx were involved into the study. A study was performed to establish the appearance of normal equine laryngeal cartilages using magnetic resonance imaging. Specimens were acquired from clinically normal horses that were euthanized for reasons other than respiratory disease. Three in situ and 5 ex vivo larynges were imaged using a 0.3 Tesla system. Images were obtained in the transverse plane using T1-weighted 3D spin echo, T2-weighted 3D spin echo, T2-weighted gradient echo, short tau inversion recovery (STIR), and proton density spin echo sequences. This thesis presents a method for fluid-structure interaction in a simplified 2D model of the human larynx using the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) approach and a strictly stable high order finite difference method. The ALE method is first tested for the fluid solver with a prescribed boundary movement, and then the method is extended to a two-way coupled explicit fluid-structure interaction where the vocal folds interact with the airflow in the larynx. At some point in their recovery, most will use an electrolarynx to recover their ability to speak.
