Abstract:
This paper presents a study of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) at low energies using KrF laser pulses of only 50–300 μJ. Very small focal spots with diameters of 5 to 20 μm are employed in order to achieve strong plasma emission. The focused intensities were in the range of 1.6 to 150 GW/cm2. The evolution of the micro-plasma progresses more rapidly in this energy range compared to conventional LIBS using mJ laser pulses. The optimum delay time for the detection of emission from minor constituent elements in aluminum is between 100 and 360 ns after the laser pulse hits the sample.

AbstractLaser induced breakdown spectroscopy is a fast non-contact technique for the analysis of the elemental composition of any sample. Our focus is to advance this technique into a regime where we use pulse energies below 100 µJ. This regime is referred to as micro-laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy or µLIBS. At present we have concentrated on two application areas : (1) The imaging of latent fingerprints and (2) the extension to laser ablation followed by laser-induced fluorescence (LA-LIF) for very high sensitivity analysis of contaminants in water. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a highly promising material for future interconnects. It is expected that the decoration of CNTs with Cu particles or also the filling of the interspaces between the CNTs with Cu instead of the currently used SiO2 can enhance the performance of CNT-based interconnects. Due to the high aspect ratio of CNTs an appropriate deposition technique has to be applied which is able to coat such structures uniformly. The current work is therefore considered with thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) of CuxO from the liquid Cu (I) β-diketonate precursor [(nBu3P)2Cu(acac)] and

Results show a possible reduction in internal electric field as nanorod diameter decreases. Localisation effects were also observed, affecting the spectral shape of the nanorod emission. This paper examines the corrosion of ferritic ductile cast iron and also presents a method of reducing the rate of corrosion in acidic water. During the corrosion process, the graphite does not form a low strength layer such as that observed with gray cast iron, but
