Abstract:
In the wake of Martin Scorsese's film adaption of the controversial novel The Last Temptation of Christ by the Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis, Kazantzakis's work received a flurry of attention, but focused on The Last Temptation. The figure of Christ, however, is central to Kazantzakis's larger literary oeuvre, and a rounded picture of Kazantzakis's fictional Christology requires tending to these works. This article develops the central themes of the tacit Christology informing Kazantzakis's Christ Recrucified: crucifixion as an emblem of spiritual-moral struggle; motifs of adoptionism and exemplarism; spring/Easter as the agitation of matter to transubstantiate; the defiant, war-like “face” of Christ; and Christ's affinity to the broader pantheon of Greek gods and fertility myths.

Abstract:
This essay considers three paradigms of imitatio Christi in the later Middle Ages and their parallels in three modern American films. One paradigm is focused on Christ's physical suffering; a second, on Christ's human relationships, including aspects of his male sexuality; and the third, on Christ's teaching. The three paradigms are exemplified in illustrations from medieval manuscripts and other media and from texts such as Johannes de Caulibus's Meditationes vitae Christi (Meditations on the Life of Christ) and Walter Hilton's Scale of Perfection. The medieval paradigms are seen to survive in three modern American film biographies of Christ: Nicholas Ray's King of Kings (1961), Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ (1997), and Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ (2004).

Abstract:
Through the controvertiality of The Last Temptation of The Christ we can learn, there is an intrinsic connection between theological aesthetic and moral theology: the theology of Christian praxis. In order to liberate, truth must capture the mind, goodness must enrapture the heart. The good and the true must appear as good and true for us. That is, truth must show its persuasiveness, goodness must show its attractiveness. The true and the good must be revealed as corresponding with our deepest human purposes and desires; in short, they must be apprehended as beautiful. Beauty can then be the instrument of conversion.

Abstract:
Religion in popular culture has the power to evoke strong feelings and reactions, especially if someone feels offended by it. Jesus is a person with grave importance for many, since many people in the world are Christians. However, there is not a lot that can be said with certainty about the historical person Jesus. This uncertainty leaves room for interpretation and creative freedom, which gives origin to art centered around Jesus’ life. This essay aims to examine the reactions to two different Jesus films: The Last Temptation of Christ from 1988 and The First Temptation of Christ from 2019. The purpose of the study is to explore possibilities of interpretation, similarities, and differences in the reception of these films through a study of newspaper articles, user reviews and journalistic reviews of both the films. The material used are user reviews from the website IMDb, reviews aimed at catholic readers, reviews for newspapers, reviews for websites specifically for movie reviews and newspaper articles about reactions to the two films. The material has been compared and analyzed through a description of reception research. Previous studies related to the subject of the essay includes research about religion and popular culture, religion in film, Jesus in film and research about reception and reviews. These books, essays, and dissertations include studies of the movie The Last Temptation of Christ, but not of The First Temptation of Christ. The films differ in a lot of ways: genre, language, the makers objective, and time of release. These differences make up obstacles in comparing the reception of the films, but despite this several similarities have been found. The results of the study are presented thematically; first with a presentation of the articles and reviews of The Last Temptation of Christ, then with a similar presentation of The First Temptation of Christ. After these presentations, the conclusions about similarities and differences in the reception are given followed by an analysis in which the reactions are understood to be either a dominant, negotiating or opposing interpretation of the respective film. It can be seen in the results that there are similarities in the user reviews on IMDb, where high ratings correspond to a dominant interpretation and low ratings correspond to an oppositional interpretation. Also, similarities have become apparent in the reactions of Christian critics, protesters, and religious leaders. In the concluding part I reflect about the didactic value of the essay and its material, then I reflect on the essay itself and the process of working with it.

Abstract:
When the filmed version of The Last Temptation of Christ was released in the United States, it met with significant protests from conservative Christians who felt it was blasphemous. Using the controversy surrounding the film and its reception in Austin, Texas, this is a case study in censorship as a social process and in the cultural conflict it signifies. Certain societal factors must converge to create an art controversy. Through an examination of the film, the groups involved in the protest, and the social and political climate at the time, some of these factors are described. Imbedded in this controversy are the underlying tensions that permeate many modern cultural debates: shifting ideas of the sacred and the profane and definitions of moral authority.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine the image of Judas Iscariot in popular culture with the help of two movies, The Last Temptation of Christ and Son of God. This study is based on a film analysis where a characterization is in focus. The method has also chosen to include intertextuality. This is because it is relevant to show how writers and filmmakers used the previous materials to create their own versions. Survey theory was based on a mediatisation-theory. This theory holds that the media's influence increases, so that now they can influence what religious beliefs people should have by viewing the version they want on TV. The surveys were done by transcribing parts of the movies, and describe what the character used for body language, how he looked and how he spoke. The study shows that both films chose to portray Judas in completely different ways. One chose to give a more biblical version of Judas, while the other created an alternative image. It was clear to see influences from past stories about Judas and especially the Bible, but also the Gospel of Judas. The results also show that both films chose to portray their version of Judas. This may be in relation to mediatisation creating different images of Judas with the viewers, and then also create new perceptions of him.

Abstract:
The Seven Last Words of Christ is a sacred cantata for SATB chorus with soloists accompanied by a woodwind quintet, brass quintet and three percussionists. The text employed in this work is based on the Gospel accounts of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in the King James Version of the of the Holy Bible. The cantata consists of seven movements with an instrumental introduction and postlude, and has a duration of approximately twenty-seven minutes. The majority of the movements are slow in tempo, reflecting the somber mood of the text. The major goal of this work is to musically represent the drama and prevailing mood present at an event of extreme magnitude and importance in the lives of Christians around the world, and to provide additional literature for special church services through the use of individual movements.

Abstract:
Focuses on Paul Schrader's process of adapting two novels—Paul Theroux's The Mosquito Coast and Nikos Kazantzakis' The Last Temptation of Christ. Draws on the Harry Ransom Center's collection of Paul Schrader's papers, Schrader's annotated copies of The Last Temptation of Christ and The Mosquito Coast, the outlines that he created for both films, and the multiple script drafts. Argues there is an inherent dilemma with The Mosquito Coast because the voiceover structure distances the viewer from the protagonist, Allie Fox, instead telling the story through the eyes of his son, Charlie. However, in Last Temptation (1978), Jesus undergoes trials that challenge his followers while remaining the audience's touchstone. The shifting use of voiceover as a technical tool in screenwriting therefore serves as a gauge for demonstrating how Schrader envelops viewers in his characters' worldviews. The last section of the chapter reflects on how Schrader's presentation of such themes is informed by his own critical concept of transcendental film style.
