Abstract:
Religion in popular culture has the power to evoke strong feelings and reactions, especially if someone feels offended by it. Jesus is a person with grave importance for many, since many people in the world are Christians. However, there is not a lot that can be said with certainty about the historical person Jesus. This uncertainty leaves room for interpretation and creative freedom, which gives origin to art centered around Jesus’ life. This essay aims to examine the reactions to two different Jesus films: The Last Temptation of Christ from 1988 and The First Temptation of Christ from 2019. The purpose of the study is to explore possibilities of interpretation, similarities, and differences in the reception of these films through a study of newspaper articles, user reviews and journalistic reviews of both the films. The material used are user reviews from the website IMDb, reviews aimed at catholic readers, reviews for newspapers, reviews for websites specifically for movie reviews and newspaper articles about reactions to the two films. The material has been compared and analyzed through a description of reception research. Previous studies related to the subject of the essay includes research about religion and popular culture, religion in film, Jesus in film and research about reception and reviews. These books, essays, and dissertations include studies of the movie The Last Temptation of Christ, but not of The First Temptation of Christ. The films differ in a lot of ways: genre, language, the makers objective, and time of release. These differences make up obstacles in comparing the reception of the films, but despite this several similarities have been found. The results of the study are presented thematically; first with a presentation of the articles and reviews of The Last Temptation of Christ, then with a similar presentation of The First Temptation of Christ. After these presentations, the conclusions about similarities and differences in the reception are given followed by an analysis in which the reactions are understood to be either a dominant, negotiating or opposing interpretation of the respective film. It can be seen in the results that there are similarities in the user reviews on IMDb, where high ratings correspond to a dominant interpretation and low ratings correspond to an oppositional interpretation. Also, similarities have become apparent in the reactions of Christian critics, protesters, and religious leaders. In the concluding part I reflect about the didactic value of the essay and its material, then I reflect on the essay itself and the process of working with it.

Abstract:
When the filmed version of The Last Temptation of Christ was released in the United States, it met with significant protests from conservative Christians who felt it was blasphemous. Using the controversy surrounding the film and its reception in Austin, Texas, this is a case study in censorship as a social process and in the cultural conflict it signifies. Certain societal factors must converge to create an art controversy. Through an examination of the film, the groups involved in the protest, and the social and political climate at the time, some of these factors are described. Imbedded in this controversy are the underlying tensions that permeate many modern cultural debates: shifting ideas of the sacred and the profane and definitions of moral authority.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine the image of Judas Iscariot in popular culture with the help of two movies, The Last Temptation of Christ and Son of God. This study is based on a film analysis where a characterization is in focus. The method has also chosen to include intertextuality. This is because it is relevant to show how writers and filmmakers used the previous materials to create their own versions. Survey theory was based on a mediatisation-theory. This theory holds that the media's influence increases, so that now they can influence what religious beliefs people should have by viewing the version they want on TV. The surveys were done by transcribing parts of the movies, and describe what the character used for body language, how he looked and how he spoke. The study shows that both films chose to portray Judas in completely different ways. One chose to give a more biblical version of Judas, while the other created an alternative image. It was clear to see influences from past stories about Judas and especially the Bible, but also the Gospel of Judas. The results also show that both films chose to portray their version of Judas. This may be in relation to mediatisation creating different images of Judas with the viewers, and then also create new perceptions of him.

Abstract:
The Seven Last Words of Christ is a sacred cantata for SATB chorus with soloists accompanied by a woodwind quintet, brass quintet and three percussionists. The text employed in this work is based on the Gospel accounts of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in the King James Version of the of the Holy Bible. The cantata consists of seven movements with an instrumental introduction and postlude, and has a duration of approximately twenty-seven minutes. The majority of the movements are slow in tempo, reflecting the somber mood of the text. The major goal of this work is to musically represent the drama and prevailing mood present at an event of extreme magnitude and importance in the lives of Christians around the world, and to provide additional literature for special church services through the use of individual movements.

The present work aims to understand the intertextuality present in the Lucan account concerning the temptations of Jesus in the desert. In addition, to emphasize the importance of reading the Scriptures in canonical form, without reductionism or fundamentalisms, vices of understanding that generate errors and even conflicts between people very influenced by extremist ideologies, therefore, closed in their understandings referring to the complex and difficult realities of the current time. An appreciation for the tradition of the Scriptures is advocated, so that a correct understanding of the biblical text can be reached, avoiding, as it were, any effort to "twist" the Word of God, in order to make it say what, perhaps, never meant to say. By interpreting exegetically the teachings transmitted according to the Tradition of the inspired text, a new consciousness can be reached and it will allow an effective behavior in the fight against all that can represent evil and injustice

Abstract:
Opposed to the Celestial Heaven waiting for the blessed, the roman artists invented a netherworld waiting for the sinners. This terrifying place, from where « tears and gnashing of the teeth » arrive (Matth, 22 , 13 ) cannot be illustrated in simple and common ways. As soon as the 11th century, in the anglo-saxon world, Hell was represented as an hybrid head, the Maw of Hell, in the medieval imagery. Did the sculptors and the illuminators get their inspiration from the monsters belonging to the oldest and contemporary pagan mythology ? Which textual sources did they use to elaborate this pattern ? Easily recognisable, the image of the Maw is one of the many representations of the Last Judgment and of Christ's Descent to Hell. A typological study will determine the influence of the presence and the aspect of the Maw of Hell on the meaning of those founding episodes of Christianism. The terrifying Maw became the symbol of a fantasmagoric and real hell slowly invading the whole religious iconography and it is worth wondering if it didn't change the meaning of many biblical episodes. Still present during the Gothic period, the Maw of Hell was changed by the artists of the late Middle Ages, before disappearing slowly from religious iconography. If medieval Hell was the subject of many studies, the Maw of Hell surprisingly attracted few Art History researchers. This thesis partially tries to fill this gap

Ramey, Margaret E. "The quest for the fictional Jesus : Gospel rewrites, Gospel (re)interpretation, and Christological portraits within Jesus novels." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/1861.

Full text
Abstract:
Jesus' story has been retold in various forms and fashions for centuries. Jesus novels, a subset of the historical fiction genre, are one of the latest means of not only re-imagining the man from Galilee but also of rewriting the canonical Gospels. This thesis explores the Christological portraits constructed in four of those novels while also using the novels to examine the intertextual play of these Gospel rewrites with their Gospel progenitors. Chapter 1 offers a prolegomenon to the act of fictionalizing Jesus that discusses the relationship between the person and his portraits and the hermeneutical circle created by these texts as they both rewrite the Gospels and stimulate a rereading of them. It also establishes the "preposterous" methodology that will be used when reexamining the Gospels "post" reading the novels. Chapters 2 to 5 offer four case studies of "complementing" and "competing" novels and the techniques they use to achieve these aims: Anne Rice's Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt; Neil Boyd's The Hidden Years; Nino Ricci's Testament; and José Saramago's The Gospel according to Jesus Christ. Chapter 6 begins an examination of a specific interpretive circle based upon Jesus' temptation in the wilderness. Beginning with the synoptic accounts of that event, the chapter then turns to how Jesus' testing has been reinterpreted and presented in two of the novels. Returning to the Gospel of Matthew's version of the Temptation, chapter 7 offers a "preposterous" examination of that pericope, which asks novel questions of the text and its role with Matthew's narrative context based on issues raised by the Gospel rewrites. The thesis concludes by suggesting that Jesus novels, already important examples of the reception history of the Gospels, can also play a helpful role in re-interpreting the Gospels themselves.

McKinley, John Elton. "A relational model of Christ's impeccability and temptation." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/353.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the biblical and theological evidence for Christ's impeccability and temptation with the goal of formulating a contemporary model. Three specific problems of affirming both Christ's impeccability and temptation are (1) how Christ could be temptable despite his impeccability, (2) how Christ could experience temptation in a way that makes him empathetic for others, and (3) how Christ could resist temptation in a way that others can follow his example? The proposal of a relational model seeks to avoid the problems and maximize the advances of earlier theology by centering the relevant evidence around the concept of relationality. The proposed relational model incorporates the biblical and theological evidence. Historical theology unveils four models of Christ's impeccability and temptation in the patristic period, and three models specific to the medieval, Reformation, and modern periods. Biblical theology yields several conclusions for testing the historical models and constructing a contemporary model. The basic claim of the proposed relational model is that Christ was impeccable, but that he actually resisted temptation by means of the empowering grace. God provides empowering grace for all believers to resist temptation; thus, believers can copy Jesus' pattern of resisting temptation to sin. A prominent role of the Holy Spirit in the earthly life of Jesus is emphasized, following the recognition of this role in patristic and contemporary theology. Special attention to the relationality of temptation is included.

Dyer, Jennifer. "The role of Archaeology in the Jesus industry." Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/21003.

Full text
Abstract:
The question leading to this study is whether the facts and theories pertaining to the Bible and Jesus Story as presented by The Authors (H Schonfield, D Joyce, B Thiering, M Baigent, R Leigh, H Lincoln; M Starbird, and D Brown) could be verified by the Archaeology evidence. I have adopted a multidiscipline and holistic approach considering information gathered from all media sources to ascertain what theories, if any could replace the traditional Jesus Story of the New Testament. I considered whether the alternative theories or traditional theories were believable due to the evidence presented by Biblical Archaeology or by the techniques used by The Authors in presenting their facts. By using Thouless’ system of Straight and Crooked thinking I was able to ascertain that the theories used in the novels written by The Authors may have been persuasive, but lacked substance.
