Abstract:

Abstract:
My novella is set in the taxi industry. Its main characters are a wealthy taxi owner, a poor taxi driver from another African country, and the taxi driver's girlfriend. The story is partly a ghost story and partly crime fiction, it combines gritty realism with magical elements. It shows what happens between people in times of taxi violence. As the plot develops, the driver finds out that his boss is sleeping with his girlfriend. In revenge, the boss bribes some policemen to arrest the driver and beat him, and he dies in the police cells. But it turns out that the detective investigating the driver’s death is not quite impartial, nor is he of this world only.

Abstract:
Et si cela est tout à fait vrai, alors notre mission de comprendre son passage par des modèles culturels et religieux si différents devient encore plus difficile<br>This study is, above all, the outcome of a long-lasting personal concern that goes back to the period of my first music lessons and my attempts to play Beethoven's music on the piano. My passion for certain musical compositions, the care to interpret them in the way, with the sensitivity and in keeping with their creator's intentions might be translated as follows: 1 wish to perform as if he could hear me and could recognize himself in the music I performed. I was fi lied, at a very early age, with the desire to know as much as possible about his personality, his life, the events and the circumstances that led to the birth of his work. It is obvious and easy to prove, based on Beethoven's own notes and the testimonies of those who have written about him for nearly two hundred years, that there were external triggers, such as social and even historical events or happenings, which activated certain musical themes that his genius and sensitivity gave expression in the form known to us today. In this study, I will speak, at the appropriate time, about situations, contexts and events of this kind: family problems, like the affair involving his nephew Karl, or sentimental issues, like the "lmmortal Beloved" (Der Unsterbliche Geliebte), the drama entailed by hearing Joss, the evolution of event on the European stage during the Napoleonic and post Napoleonic periods, etc. Second, this study represents a strictly theoretical undertaking. I wish to present, according to my own understanding, the connections formed throughout the nearly three decades of disease between Beethoven's hearing impairment and his musical creation. Beyond the medical situation that he responded to with understandable panic, with a mixture of helplessness, tremor and depression, which brought him close to the brink of suicide in around the year 1803, the Joss of hearing opened an agonizing horizon in the composer's existence, a horizon against which he waged his battle with destiny. This is the theme, his perception, which led him to take on the image and role of a Hero, of a Titan, strained under the bleak attempts of the divine machinations that he met with courage and, sometimes, even with defiance. It was from these strains that some of his most complex, powerful, expressive and innovative works gushed forth, from his Third and Ninth Symphonies to the piano sonatas and several other compositions for strings. Beethoven was, according to Wagner's very suggestive comparison, the equivalent of Tiresias. Thus, shifting between levels of expression, he could hear pure music with an ear that was no longer disturbed or corrupted by outside sounds. The music he heard and transmitted gushed out of himself, from the depths of his being, which was marked by dignity and prophetic drama in equal measure. His internal hearing was already sensitive to the sounds of the World, to the rhythms of Phenomena, to the turmoil and syncopes of Life. Like Tiresias, Beethoven was a prophet who could hear, understand and transmit the mysterious music of the world to the future centuries. He could hear the music of paradise and convey it in the Pastoral Symphony, he could hear the sublime joy of human brotherhood and convey it at the end of the Ninth Symphony, he could hear the sounds of death and hell and convey them in the serious, funeral passages of the Eroica Symphony of the Hammerklavier Sonata. He could hear the ceaseless melody of life's flow through time, he could understand the sonata of nature, the dance of light, the verve of joy, but also the twilight, pain and night, the end. He could hear the music from which this universe of illusory, transient and capricious forms was made, this universe which we call reality. This, I believe, is the "Last" Beethoven

Book Summary: Robert Morgan and Kathryn Stripling Byer, Al Maginnes and Cathy Smith Bowers, Thomas Rain Crowe and Michael McFee, as well as many new voices. . . Indeed, the variegation of the Tar Heel State's landscapes, as well as its rich history, is reflected through the myriad voices of its contemporary verse. As with other volumes of The Southern Poetry Anthology, this book--full of a wide gamut of poetic styles and approaches--will appeal to many readers, prove an excellent teaching resource for North Carolina students of literature, and serve as the definitive poetic document for North Carolina for many years.Conceived by Series Editor William Wright in 2003, The Southern Poetry Anthology is a projected twelve-to-sixteen volume project celebrating established and emerging poets of the American South, published by Texas Review Press. Inspired by single-volume anthologies such as Leon Stokesbury's The Made Thing, Gil Allen's A Ninety-Six Sampler, and Guy Owen and Mary C. Williams' Contemporary Southern Poetry: an Anthology, The Southern Poetry Anthology aspires to provide readers with a documentary-like survey of the best poetry being written in the American South at the present moment.Specifically, the editors' goals are twofold: first, to re-establish poetry of the South as a major presence in American literature, and second, to include a greater range of poets from the South to introduce a new poetic geography, a fresh corpus of what we understand to be "Southern Poetry."

Baumann, Stéphanie. "Siegfried Kracauers "History - the last things before the last" : Geschichtsdenken als Vorraumdenken." Paris 8, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA083890.

Full text
Abstract:
The Last Things Before the Last, consacré à l’histoire. ) plus contemporaines du « métier d’historien »<br>This work focuses on Siegfried Kracauer’s historical thought. It aims to trace the genesis of his last uncompleted book, History. The Last Things before the Last. This work is partly based on the Kracauer Archives to be found at the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach. Are examined the intellectual spheres of dialogue and constellations that led to the writing of History : the discussion with Walter Benjamin, with the philosophers Hans Blumenberg and Ernst Bloch, but also the essential contribution of art historians (Focillon, Kubler, Panofsky) and literature theorists (Auerbach, Jauß). It is shown that Kracauer’s historical thought is a critique of historism and of the pretention to conceive any universal history; it also presents us with an original conception of historical time (“the cataracts of time”) as necessarily and irretrievably fragmented. This work exposes the way Kracauer applied the findings of his reflection on photography and the cinema to the historical object. Being better suited to the intellectual and spiritual situation of modernity, history becomes the most appropriate domain for developing a “the anteroom thinking” as opposed to the “last things”. This work considers the ruptures and continuities in Kracauer’s thought marked by the experience of exile from 1933. History epitomizes the transition between the debates around historism which continued well into the 1930s and the more modern approaches (micrology, the “linguistic turn”, etc…) to the historian’s work

Full text
Abstract:
Tämän työn tarkoituksena on tutkia Last Planner -menetelmän käyttöönottoa. Työn tarkoituksena on selvittää menetelmän käyttöönotosta mahdollisesti saavutettavat hyödyt etenkin projektin aikataulun hallinnan, sekä projektin jäsenten välisen tiedonkulun parantumisen osalta. Menetelmä on alun perin suunniteltu työmaan tuotannonohjaukseen, eikä sen soveltuvuutta pienen mittakaavan projekteille ole juurikaan tutkittu. Työ koostuu kirjallisuuskatsauksesta ja empiriaosuudesta. Kirjallisuuskatsaus käsittelee teoriaa projekteista, projektinhallinnasta ja Last Planner -menetelmästä. Tutkimuskysymykset ovat: 1. Kuinka Last Planner -menetelmän implementointi tulee toteuttaa käytännössä? 2. Voiko Last Planner -menetelmää soveltaa opiskelijaprojekteihin? Empiriaosuus käsittelee teoriaosuudessa esitetyn tutkimuksen soveltamista opiskelijaprojektiin. Työn tulokset ovat hyödynnettävissä muihin opiskelijaprojekteihin<br>The goal of this thesis is to survey the implementation process of the Last Planner System. This thesis aims to clarify the benefits of the implementation, especially for time management, but also for the information flow between the members of the project. The Last Planner System has been created for controlling production in construction business, and implementation of the system has not yet been studied nor proved to be beneficial for small projects. This thesis consists literature review and case study. The literature review includes theory about project, project management and the Last Planner System. The research questions are: 1. How the Last Planner System should be implemented? 2. Is the Last Planner System suitable for student projects? The case study is about practical application of the Last Planner System for student project, based on presented theory. For this project, the implementation was carried out by make-ready -planning and weekly work planning together with the project members. As a result of this thesis it was found out that already a partial implementation of the Last Planner System improves the information flow, and makes it easier to understand the overall situation and to follow the fulfillment of the tasks. Implementing the whole system is not reasonable considering already limited resources student projects may already have. The results of this thesis are applicable to other student projects

This autobiographical poetry collection is about identity, belonging, and brokenness, dealing with the aftermath of a dead mother, a deadbeat father, and a decaying home filled with years of trash and memory. As a child of a hoarder, one who fielded questions from family, friends, and the Department of Human Service for almost twenty years, I am just starting to confidently address the many silences that were and are present in my family: my mother’s quest to hide her breast cancer and her subsequent death as a result of her secrecy; my father’s four other children that I have never met; and my grandparents’ military history spanning three continents in the 1950s and 1960s.<br>Master of Fine Arts

Abstract:
Born to a Hungarian mother and a father of Hungarian descent, I have spent my life trapped between two worlds, never quite able to be entirely part of either. As such, it seems fitting that for thesis I chose to do a novella, an art form that is neither short story nor novel. The novella is, I argue, a form that is uniquely suited to the task of examining a single theme at length, which I do in my thesis. It is through this little-studied form of fiction that I create a story through which I examine my own identity and world view. "The Last Honest Man" tells the story of Attila Molnár, a Hungarian shoe factory manager who comes to America to reconnect with his estranged wife. Along the way, he meets an old colleague, a former KGB agent who asks for his help in a scam involving the Y2K crisis. The novel explores the interconnected theme of identity and nationality in a world constantly shifting and changing politically and technologically. It addresses values of loyalty, friendship, family, and courage, each altered by time yet fundamentally unchanged.

Abstract:
Every Last Bit of You is a realistic fiction novel employing an alternative narrative format. Profiles, passwords, wall posts, chats, and private messages tell the story of fifteen-year-old Hailey Milner, and sixteen-year-old Noah Huntington. This young adolescent novel explores the themes of grief and obsession through interconnecting communications of several characters, illustrating problems faced by modern teens such as Internet stalking and family difficulties, and ultimately leading the reader through a journey of reconstruction. Hailey Milner, born and raised in Victoria, BC, is having a rough year at school, ignoring invitations from her best friend, Sophia, and struggling to make sense of her family’s changing circumstances. And what more could she possibly take on? A recommendation from the school’s counselor suggests joining the school’s badminton team. Moving from Calgary, AB, Noah and his twin brother, Jack, arrive at school in the middle of the spring term. The last thing on this sporty jock’s mind is playing badminton. But when Noah discovers it’s the only school team left this year, he tries out. Hailey’s ‘safe space’ in these hard months is writing to her older sister, Zoe, that is, until Hailey and Noah are partnered in the mixed doubles on the badminton team. Hailey’s year finally starts to look up when a tentative friendship develops between her and Noah. Hailey senses that Noah has some family secrets of his own and she sees the potential for a fresh start for herself. Could their friendship possibly mean more? Hailey’s daydreams burst when she discovers that Noah is not likely to reciprocate her feelings. This event, compounding her original problems, drives Hailey into a grief-induced obsession over Noah, which soon gives way to full-out Facebook stalking. On the anniversary of a significant event, the root of Hailey’s grief becomes fodder for the News Feed on Facebook. But Hailey soon learns that not all public news is bad news. At the same time, Noah’s home life is also in flux, and through his muddled friendship with Hailey, he gains an appreciation for what, or rather who, matters in life.

Ciech, Federico. "Models of last passage percolation." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2019. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/81476/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis provides the discussion of three last passage percolation models. In particular, we focus on three aspects of probability theory: the law of large numbers, the order of the variance and large deviation estimates. In Chapter 1, we give a brief introduction to the percolation models in general and we present some important results for this topic which are heavily used in the following proofs. In Chapter 2, we prove a strong law of large numbers for directed last passage times in an independent but inhomogeneous exponential environment. Rates for the exponential random variables are obtained from a discretisation of a speed function that may be discontinuous on a locally finite set of discontinuity curves. The limiting shape is cast as a variational formula that maximises a certain functional over a set of weakly increasing curves. Using this result, we present two examples that allow for partial analytical tractability and show that the shape function may not be strictly concave, and it may exhibit points of non-differentiability, at segments, and non-uniqueness of the optimisers of the variational formula. Finally, in a specific example, we analyse further the macroscopic optimisers and uncover a phase transition for their behaviour. In Chapter 3, we discuss the order of the variance on a lattice analogue of the Hammersley process with boundaries, for which the environment on each site has independent, Bernoulli distributed values. The last passage time is the maximum number of Bernoulli points that can be collected on a piecewise linear path, where each segment has strictly positive but finite slope. We show that along characteristic directions the order of the variance of the last passage time is of order N2=3 in the model with boundary. These characteristic directions are restricted in a cone starting at the origin, and along any direction outside the cone, the order of the variance changes to O(N) in the boundary model and to O(1) for the non-boundary model. This behavior is the result of the two at edges of the shape function. In Chapter 4, we prove a large deviation principle and give an expression for the rate function, for the last passage time in a Bernoulli environment. The model is exactly solvable and its invariant version satisfies a Burke-type property. Finally, we compute explicit limiting logarithmic moment generating functions for both the classical and the invariant models. The shape function of this model exhibits a flat edge in certain directions, and we also discuss the rate function and limiting log-moment generating functions in those directions.

Visagie, Morne. "The last colour to fade." Master's thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/11427/31802.

Full text
Abstract:
Drawing on personal recollections and collective history, The Last Colour to Fade offers a meditation on the sea as both a physical and psychological landscape. Memories of my childhood spent on Robben Island are interwoven with historical facts, with narratives borrowed from literature and film, and images from art and life. Shifting between first person and third, between my own reflections and those of others, I have found in the lives and works of Adriaan Van Zyl, Derek Jarman, Jean Genet, Virginia Woolf and others a shared affinity for water. The sea – changeable, inconstant – reveals itself to be evocative of not only promise and peril, but of sensuality, desire and eroticism. It offers as imperfect parallel the image of the swimming pool and its attendant changing room, evoking a history of the queer body in art and writing. The twelve discrete artworks collected under the title The Last Colour to Fade, are abstracted interpretations of these themes, where colour and materiality are primary. The works share a persistent seriality, with the recurring image of a pool, the motif of tiles, and repetition of form. Most tends towards fragility, towards a suggested impermanence, made from tissue paper, porcelain, or stained tarlatan cloth. The accompanying text is one of fragments and vignettes, which suggest rather than state my thematic concerns, pairing my own voice with those of others in quoted passages and poems. Both my exhibition and writing gesture to the liminal space between what is said and what is left unspoken.

Abstract:
It is a dark future, where corporations have taken the place of governmental bodies, and Earth is a myth, forgotten in the reconstruction after the Second Dark Age. One man--a clone--investigates a murder [that] leads him deep into a spirit quest of his own that will answer the questions of Man's heritage as well as his own identity. This story is a science fiction, but it is similar in structure to a Coyote tale and involves quite a bit of Navajo mythology. The use of Native American imagery is not an attempt to capitalize on another culture, but rather to study the culture and use allegorical elements that transcend many cultures. It must also be noted that non-Native American writers wrote all texts available on the subject. This fact should be taken into consideration by the reader.

Ross, Hamish. "The last glaciation of Shetland." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/15278.

Full text
Abstract:
Evidence of the last glaciation of the Shetland Islands, UK, is re-examined and combined with new data on terrestrial glacigenic deposits and recent offshore data from the continental shelf to produce a dynamic, integrated model of the history of the whole ice cap. It is shown that evidence which has previously been attributed to last glacial, or earlier, Scandinavian ice incursion, might be explained by the eastwards migration of local ice sheds. At its maximum, the ice sheet reached the continental shelf edge to the west of the islands, at least 75 km east, at least 50 km north and might be seen as a peninsular extension of the Scottish ice sheet to the south. The changing patterns of ice flow during deglaciation are reconstructed, implying an early phase of deglaciation at the west and northwest margins (possibly accounting for the suggested eastern migration of the ice shed), followed by retreat at more northern, then eastern, then southern margins. It is suggested that the above pattern reflects tidewater calving controlled by bathymmetric variation around the ice sheet. During a later phase of deglaciation, the margin of the ice cap may have grounded at around the current -100m bathymmetric contour and from there retreated terrestrially. The importance of topographic control on patterns of deglaciation as ice retreated towards the island group is clearly established. Some minor moraines in parts of Shetland are due to active ice margins but their age is unknown. Radiocarbon dates reported here show that the last glaciation was Late Weichselian and that the maximum northern extent was at least 50 km north of the islands. The concepts of an eastwards migrating ice shed and an early, extensive ice cap retreating to a grounding point, could have parallels elsewhere in Scotland during the last glaciation. The methodology applied in this study of Shetland - integrating onshore and offshore data, and developing a dynamic picture of the whole ice cap - needs to be applied to the last Scottish ice sheet also.

Abstract:
I came to SIU with poetic sensibilities and a sense of whimsy about writing from my undergraduate years. In the interim period, I managed the volunteer construction of over 120 new homes in Hurricane Katrina ravaged Southeast Louisiana and the home repair of hundreds more for low-income families in the impoverished region of Appalachia. I have stories. I can swing a hammer and cut a board straight as a factory edge. I wanted the same craft knowledge in poetry as I gained in home building. I did not and still do not avidly read poetry. Too often I feel poetry strives for obfuscation and devolves into literary claptrap. I am interested in construction narratives that are comprehendible and meaningful. When the professor I applied to SIU to work with (Rodney Jones) retired and was not replaced (the ol' bait and no replace) I switched my focus to fiction and attempted to use this period of time in graduate school to obtain narrative skills to better express my experiences, memories, ideas, and humor in whatever format that may eventually take. During my first year in the M.F.A. program I began to refer to poems as "word piles" rather than assuming the ostentatious label of "poetry." I do not consider myself a poet, but rather a storyteller. During my three years at this directional state school, I have almost unanimously chosen socialization over writing in solitary confinement. During these social times, conversing and joking with my colleagues, I felt most inspired and motivated to create--characters, voices, histories, and stories. I am still learning to appropriate this creative process to my writing and searching for what I truly enjoy engaging in as a writer and creator. In this thesis there is no overarching narrative. Rather, the poems that follow represent various elements that interest me. There are poems that deal with construction work, incidents from growing up, idea driven work, and pieces that deal with my experience living in and working with the people of Appalachia. I am drawn to the anecdote and find in poetry I can mix the varied adventures and characters I have experienced with my imaginings in a manner that will reach people outside the genre. All the poems that follow are meant to be read and accessible by people unfamiliar with the pretentious underpinnings of poetry and to cogently express the ideas and experiences I find to be engaging and meaningful.

Abstract:
last goodnight amidst Superior fog (for sinfonietta and fixed media) explores one recorded sound, analyzed at three increasingly quiet amplitude thresholds. From these analyses, I created three harmonic collections, each comprised of the thirty loudest tones under the chosen amplitude thresholds. Although a re-synthesis of the first collection sounds very similar to the actual acoustic model, the quieter collections point less clearly to an identifiable source. While a computer can show us that these tones exist in the source, what is their role in our perception of the sound? Do they create a background to the loudest tones, adding subtleties that make the sound unique? Or are they beyond our perception, filtered out by our psychological and physiological limitations, and only evident through technological means, like the observation of ultraviolet light? With these questions in mind, I wrote this piece to explore the ambiguous space between these two realities: one close to our perception, and one far from it. We spend much of our lives saying goodbye. Each of these moments is a threshold between two states of being. Through this piece, I seek to place the listener in this point of transition – a situation in which they are perpetually moving on, but in a sense, not moving at all. Uncertain of boundaries, a process may be perceived as unified - as if observing a single moment from many perspectives.

In order to test the power supply (GPU), AC loads are more varied than a single resistive load. This report examines the possibility of purchasing or constructing such AC loads. A market investigation was conducted to investigate whether there are solutions on the market today. It turned out that there are several companies offering different solutions for this, but the specifications for them are difficult to interpret and these solutions are also very expensive. An own design was also constructed to use an existing single resistive load in a smarter manner. By controlling the load with semiconductor relays, rapid progress can be simulated. The relays are controlled by a microcontroller, which can easily be updated with new programs to obtain different test cycles.

Abstract:
Let x, y, z, n, α ∈ ℤ with α ≥ 1, p and n ≥ 5 primes. In 2011, Michael Bennett, Florian Luca and Jamie Mulholland showed that the equation involving a twisted sum of cubes [equation omitted] has no pairwise coprime nonzero integer solutions p ≥ 5,n ≥ p²p and p ∉ S where S is the set of primes q for which there exists an elliptic curve of conductor NE ∈ {18q,36q,72q} with at least one nontrivial rational 2-torsion point. In this dissertation, I present a solution that extends the result to include a subset of the primes in S; those q ∈ S for which all curves with conductor NE ∈ {18q,36q,72q} with nontrivial rational 2-torsion have discriminants not of the form ℓ² or -3m² with ℓ,m ∈ ℤ. Using a similar approach, I will classify certain integer solutions to the equation of a twisted sum of fifth powers [equation omitted] which in part generalizes work done from Billerey and Dieulefait in 2009. I will also discuss limitations of the methods for these equations and as they extend to further prime exponents.<br>Science, Faculty of<br>Mathematics, Department of<br>Graduate

Grussenmeyer, J. M. "Cardinal Kemp : the last Lancastrian statesman." Thesis, University of Kent, 2018. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/70643/.

Full text
Abstract:
John Kemp (c. 1380-1454) - cardinal, archbishop, councillor, chancellor, and diplomat - was one of the most central figures in the royal government during the reign of Henry VI, serving the Lancastrian Crown for four decades. Despite this, scholars have treated him with varying degrees of neglect, mentioning him often enough but rarely ever attributing consequential policy to his influence. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of Kemp's political career, examining him as an individual statesman and using his biography as a lens through which to gain a deeper understanding of royal government and political culture under the Lancastrian dynasty. While it is notoriously difficult to paint a detailed portrait of any medieval personage, Kemp's career is considerably well documented. Records of chancery, the exchequer, and the royal council give us a great deal of information about his public career, while the invaluable correspondence recorded by William Swan, his proctor at the curia, grants us a rare glimpse of the private feelings, ambitions, and concerns of a fifteenth-century prelate. From his time on the minority council in the 1420s to his chancellorship in the volatile 1450s, he was often called upon during times of crisis, and it is during such trying times that we can most clearly see his stabilising effect upon the governance of the realm. His parliamentary addresses and court of chancery decisions evidence his strong principles, and his statesmanship is further confirmed by the remarkable diplomacy with which he balanced his obligations to both Church and state, finding favour with the papacy while always prioritising the interests of the Crown. Kemp's death in 1454 removed the last figure able to restrain the duke of York's ambitions and to prevent political faction from descending into violence, and it is no coincidence that the Wars of the Roses commenced the following year. Cardinal Kemp was, indeed, the last Lancastrian statesman.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses the entirety of Margaret Cavendish's archive to present the first full account of her thought within its historical context. Living in France, the Netherlands, and England, Cavendish's ideas were honed and in some cases prompted by her correspondences with figures who were central to the Republic of Letters, such as Constantijn Huygens, Samuel Sorbière, and Kenelm Digby. In their turn, a wide range of Cavendish's contemporaries rigorously engaged with her publications. Bringing atomism from France to England, she encouraged Walter Charleton's translation of Pierre Gassendi's Animadversiones; Thomas Shadwell's critique of the Royal Society in his popular satirical play, The Virtuoso, was based on The Blazing World; Arthur Annesley heavily annotated Cavendish's De vita ... Guilielmi ducis Novo-Castrensis in preparing his own Latin history; Susan Du Verger wrote a folio-length response to Cavendish's reflections on monasticism; and Nehemiah Grew read her medical treatise when developing his comparative anatomy. Far from being the eccentric and isolated "Mad Madge" of common repute, I recover Cavendish as one of the most prolific and philosophically informed English writers of the seventeenth century. When Cavendish's ideas have been studied in relation to those of other thinkers, she has usually been aligned with novatores, especially Thomas Hobbes and René Descartes. While these figures were "philosophers" insofar as they held undergraduate degrees, they desired to cleanse philosophy of the Aristotelian detritus of the university curriculum in which it had long been submerged. Paradoxically, I show that it was precisely because of Cavendish's lack of a formal education that she was more willing to align herself with the universities, and with the mainstream of seventeenth-century thought, than Hobbes and Descartes. Pushing back on the historiographical consensus, I show that through her career-long dialogue with editions, commentaries, and translations of ancient mythology, history, and natural philosophy, Cavendish cleaved to Aristotelian principles and categories as an antidote to the intellectual and religious turmoil of her times. In doing so, I argue that she produced the first (and last) work of traditional natural philosophy composed wholly in the English vernacular. Rather than priming her to embrace a closed and dogmatic set of philosophical precepts, this thesis underscores the inherent plurality of Aristotelian natural philosophy. The first chapter studies Cavendish's 1653 Poems, and Fancies in relation to the mythological publications of Francis Bacon and George Sandys, and the atomic writing of Pierre Gassendi and Thomas Harriot. Turning from her atomism, the second chapter discusses the material spirits of her 1653 Philosophicall Fancies and her 1655 Philosophical and Physical Opinions. It demonstrates that Cavendish's opposition to the mathematical and mechanical corpuscles of Descartes, and her interest in the traditions of Galenic and chymical medicine, inspired this shift in her substance theory. The third chapter moves from one higher discipline to the next by studying the theological ideas of Cavendish's 1664 Philosophical Letters. It argues that she developed a Reformed Anglican theology against the heterodox Platonic philosophy and cabalistic theology of Henry More and Joseph Glanvill. Shifting the target of her criticism, the fourth chapter finally studies how Cavendish manipulated Thomas Stanley's History of Philosophy to critique the Royal Society in her 1666 Observations Upon Experimental Philosophy and the Blazing World. Bookended by the influences of Gassendi and Thomas Stanley, Cavendish manipulated the more discursive and hermeneutic modes of Aristotelian thought to cultivate a continuum between literature as imaginative writing and literae humaniores as an embodiment of the encyclopaedia of learning. By building on methodologies not only from literary history, but also from the histories of science, philosophy, and scholarship, my work shows that Cavendish's oeuvre is one of the most powerful examples of the degree to which the seventeenth-century realms of the "new philosophy", literature, and learning were intertwined.
