Lynn, Timothy Forest. "Otitis media and language development in late talkers." PDXScholar, 1990. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4100.

Full text
Abstract:
While there is agreement in the literature that otitis media is an extremely prevalent disorder among young children, there is disagreement as to the effect that otitis media has on language development. The lack of definitive research attests to the complexity of the issue and to the need for continued research. This study examined the relationship between an early history of otitis media and the language development of a group of "late talkers". The 28 toddlers in this group, while otherwise normal, were late to begin to speak. Each of the subjects was placed into one of two subgroups, depending upon their reported experience with otitis media. When the children were four years old, they were evaluated using the TOLD-P and a spontaneous speech sample. A similar group of 25 children who had a history of normal language development was also examined.

Edberg, Elin. "Environmental Development around Falun Copper Mineduring Late Holocene." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för geovetenskaper, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-244313.

Abstract:
The area at and around the Falun copper mine has always been of great interest. To begin with it was the valuable ore that drew people to the area. Now it is the historical, archaeological and environmental aspects that draw researchers from different fields of study to Falun. Peat cores were taken in several peatlands throughout an area extending toward about 2 kilometres to the west, southwest and south of the Falun mine. One core was selected for more extensive studies including plant macrofossil analysis, loss on ignition (LOI) and 14C – analysis. These methods are combined to give a picture of the environmental conditions at different periods in time, using plants and their preferred growth environment as an aid. The untouched environment changing into the well-known mining landscape that prevailed in the hey-day of the mine, with the change being the focal point, is the reason for this study. The cores presented in this thesis generally show lake areas drying up and transforming into peatlands, some peatlands may however have been formed in other ways. The location chosen for further studies is now almost transformed to a forest floor. This study provides a solid foundation for further studies as well as adds more information to existing knowledge. However, more research is needed to fully understand how the environment changed due to the opening of the mine.<br>Området vid och runt Falu koppargruva har alltid varit av stort intresse.

Spencer, Daniel. "The development of gunpowder weapons in Late Medieval England." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2016. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/398051/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis is a study of the development of gunpowder weapons in Late Medieval England. This was a new technology that had reached Western Europe by the early fourteenth century, which had first supplemented and later supplanted traditional forms of artillery. The development of early firearms has long been recognised as significant by historians and has been identified as a key part of the military revolution hypothesis. As a result of this, gunpowder weapons are often discussed in general works on English military history but there is at the moment no satisfactory study on its long-term development in England. The aim of the present study is to rectify this gap in the literature by carrying out a thorough examination and comparison of the extensive surviving financial records for the English Crown and towns for the period covering the reigns of Edward III to Henry VII. This information will be analysed to determine how the use of guns on military campaigns, in towns, royal fortifications and on ships changed over time, as well as to assess what factors influenced the development of gunpowder weapons and to see if these changes constituted a military revolution. As a result of this research, it is now possible to establish a comprehensive narrative of how English gunpowder weapons developed throughout this critical period in the history of the technology.

Romano, Jennifer Joyce. "Dimensions of Parenting and Identity Development in Late Adolescence." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33825.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research examining the link between parenting and identity have either indirectly assessed a single dimension of parenting or explored the degree of achievement rather than the process of identity development. The present study examines the influence of maternal and paternal parenting behaviors on the identity formation process in late adolescence. Participants (N = 1134), ranging in age from 18 to 25, completed questionnaires to assess their perceptions of parental behaviors and their current identity status. The results indicate an association between maternal acceptance and identity achievement, and moratorium was correlated with lax control and psychological control. Parental acceptance and psychological control were linked with foreclosure, and all three dimensions of parenting were found to be associated with identity diffusion. The findings are discussed from an intervention standpoint as to which specific parental behaviors can protect against the unachieved identity statuses and facilitate the identity formation process.<br>Master of Science

Manan, Rajith Singh. "Late Transition Metal-Catalyst Development for Alkyne Coupling Reactions." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2016. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/28024.

Full text
Abstract:
Alkynes are versatile and valuable synthetic precursors in a variety of organic transformations and have found tremendous applications in materials science and pharmaceutical chemistry. In recent years, there has been a tremendous growth in the development of transitionmetal catalyzed organic transformations by alkynes coupling reactions such as ring constructions (carbocycles and heterocycles), hydroarylation and hydroamination. This thesis describes the development of new transition metal catalyst for alkyne coupling reactions. The results are highlighted by chemoselective coupling between internal alkynes and N-H aromatic ketimines to synthesize indenamine, dihydroisoquinoline, and 2-aza-1,3-butadiene derivatives. Chapter 1 introduces background for alkyne coupling reactions towards hydrometalation, hydroarylation and hydroamination. Also this chapter provides new strategies developed towards C-H activation and hydroamination by using late transition metal catalysts. Chapter 2 describes catalytic development of rhodium catalyzed redox-neutral [4+2] annulation of N-H aromatic ketimines and alkynes to synthesize multi-substituted 3,4- dihydroisoquinolines (DHIQs) in high chemo-selectivity over competing annulation processes, exclusive cis-diastereoselectivity, and distinct regioselectivity for alkyne addition. Chapter 3 describes development of earth abundant metal nickel as the catalyst for the Nickel (0)/NHC-based catalyst system for alkyne hydroimination with aromatic N−H ketimines as N-nucleophiles. To demonstrate the potential of current method for practical synthesis, we also carried out a gram-scale alkyne hydroimination with benzophenone imine. Chapter 4 describes catalyst development for oxidative [4+2] imine/alkyne annulation with unconventional regioselectivity. Even though there are numerous methods towards the synthesis of isoquinoline derivative here in this chapter we proposed a different pathway for C-N bond formation compared to other reported methods. In spite of moderate yields for the unsymmetrical alkynes the regioselectivity is different from other reported isoquinoline products by oxidative [4+2] annulations. Chapter 5 describes about Ni/NHC catalyst development towards stereoselective semihydrogenation of alkynes by usig simple alcohol, isopropanol as the hydrogen source. Here we report new Ni-NHC complexes derived from Ni(0)-mediated facile C−H activation at the methyl position of IPr, one of the most commonly used NHC ligands in nickel catalysis. Results from stoichiometric transformations suggest that such cyclometalation provides a low-energy access to NHC-ligated Ni(II) hydride species that are envisioned as key reactive intermediates in many catalytic processes.

Liu, Xiaozhu. "Paradoxical development: China's early industrialization in the late nineteenth century." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/187398.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation studies China's first industrializing efforts to transform its navigation, cotton textiles and banking in the late nineteenth century, and analyzes the paradoxical roles of the state and culture in achieving development. It argues that successful late development is dependent on state policies that emphasize state-society connectedness and tradition-modernity continuity. In late Qing China, the state-midwifed industrial projects faced both intensive competition from foreign firms and resistance from domestic vested interests. Because key resource factors such as capital, production technology, and management skill were scarce and distributed unevenly across multiple sectors, the state officials had to redirect the resource flows in order to found new industries. The state had to perform an essential function of creative destruction, without which social groups in non-state sectors would be less likely to embrace changes, but the ultimate success of new industries depended on a societal consolidation that redefined the state-society relationship. This study also shows that culture was a double-edged sword with great potential for lubricating industrial transformation. The promoters of development created myths, symbols and beliefs to legitimize their industrializing efforts. They made a constant effort to reinterpret tradition in order to find compatibility between the foreign and domestic systems. The distinctive sectoral paths taken by navigation, cotton textiles and banking represented different patterns of state-society cooperation for achieving development. Each sector had distinct production technologies and product structure, and was endowed with distinct sectoral institutions and other legacies. These endowments constrained choices of every new industry, but it was a combination of structural factors and industry's responsive strategies that explained why some enterprises succeeded while others failed. A project was more likely to succeed if there was greater state-society connectedness and cultural compatibility. Steam navigation was the most successful among the three, followed by cotton textiles. Banking was the least successful.

Williams, A. Lynn, and Mary Elbert. "A Prospective Longitudinal Study of Phonological Development in Late Talkers." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2003. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/2003.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Purpose:This study involved prospective longitudinal data on 5 late talkers to provide information about the course of phonological development in order to identify possible predictors of delayed versus deviant development. Method: Five children (3 boys, 2 girls) were identified as late talkers and divided into a younger group and an older group. Each child was followed monthly for 10 to 12 months (22–33 months for the younger group and 30–42 months for the older group). Two types of monthly language samples (free play and elicited) were obtained to describe the individual courses of phonological development for each child. Independent and relational analyses were completed at each age to describe word-initial and word-final phonetic inventories, syllable structure, syllable diversity, percentage of consonants correct (PCC), sound variability, and error patterns. Results: The results indicated that 3 of the children resolved their late onset of speech by 33 to 35 months of age. In addition to quantitative factors, (e.g., limited phonetic inventory, lower PCC, and more sound errors), qualitative variables (e.g., atypical error patterns, greater sound variability, and slower rate of resolution) also were identified as potential markers of long-term phonological delay. Clinical Implications: This study provides information to clinicians so they can identify those children who are less likely to resolve their late onset of phonological development without direct intervention. Procedures are described for assessing early linguistic behaviors that incorporate independent and relational analyses on more extensive speech samples (elicited and free play). From these analyses, clinicians can examine quantitative and qualitative variables to differentiate phonological delay from deviance.

Wood, Alice. "The development of Virginia Woolf's late cultural criticism, 1930-1941." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/4806.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the development of Virginia Woolf’s late cultural criticism. While contemporary scholars commonly observe that Woolf shifted her intellectual focus from modernist fiction to cultural criticism in the 1930s, there has been little sustained examination of why and how Woolf’s late cultural criticism evolved during 1930-1941. This thesis aims to contribute just such an investigation to field. My approach here fuses a feminist-historicist approach with the methodology of genetic criticism (critique génétique), a French school of textual studies that traces the evolution of literary works through their compositional histories. Reading across published and unpublished texts in Woolf’s oeuvre, my genetic, feminist-historicist analysis of Woolf emphasises that her late cultural criticism developed from her early feminist politics and dissident aesthetic stance as well as in response to the tempestuous historical circumstances of 1930-1941. As a prelude to my investigation of Woolf’s late output, Chapter 1 traces the genesis of Woolf’s cultural criticism in her early biographical writings. Chapter 2 then scrutinises Woolf’s late turn to cultural criticism through six essays she produced for Good Housekeeping in 1931. Chapter 3 surveys the evolution of Woolf’s critique of patriarchy in Three Guineas (1938) through the voluminous pre-publication documents that link this innovative feminist-pacifist pamphlet to The Years (1937). Finally, Chapter 4 outlines how Woolf’s last novel, Between the Acts (1941), fuses fiction with cultural criticism to debate art’s social role in times of national crisis. The close relationship between formal and political radicalism in Woolf’s late cultural criticism, I conclude, undermines the integrity of viewing Woolf’s oeuvre in two distinct phases –the modernist 1920s and the socially-engaged 1930s – and suggests the danger of using such labels in wider narratives of interwar literature. Woolf’s late cultural criticism, this thesis argues, developed from rather than rejected her earlier experimentalism.

Berman, Alan M. "Fostering the development of identity and intimacy during late adolescence." FIU Digital Commons, 1998. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1626.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation tested the effectiveness of a psychosocial intervention, the Personal Development in the Context of Relationships (PDCR) program. The aim of the PDCR seeks to foster the development (or enhancement) of a sense of identity and intimacy among adolescents who participate in the program. The PDCR is a psychosocial group intervention which utilizes interpersonal relationship issues as a context to foster personal development in identity formation and facilitate the development of an individual's capacity for intimacy. The PDCR uses intervention strategies which include skills and knowledge development, experiential group exercises, and exploration for insight. Participants consisted of 1 10 late adolescents. A mixed-subjects design (prepost-follow up) was used to assess the effectiveness; efficacy and utility of the PDCR on the experimental condition relative to a content/social contact control group and a time control condition. Identity exploration and identity commitment were measured by the Ego Identity Process Questionnaire (EIPQ). Total intimacy and identity role satisfaction were measured by the Erikson Psychosocial Stage Inventory (EPSI). Relationship quality and closeness were measured by the Relationship Quality Scale (RQS) and the Relationship Closeness Inventory (RCI) in an effort to assess whether any potential impact on interpersonal relationships occurs. Mixed MANOVAs were used to analyze the data with results yielding significant values for increased total identity exploration from pre to post test and decreases in total identity commitment from pre to post to follow-up test in the experimental group relative to the control conditions on the EIPQ. Further results indicated increases in total intimacy from pre to post to follow-up test in the experimental group relative to the control conditions on the EPSI. No clear trends emerged from pre to post to follow-up test for the Relationship measures. Results are discussed in terms of both practical and theoretical implications.

Hu, Jimmy Kuang-Hsien. "Diverse Roles of Cell Signaling during Early and Late Phases of Limb Development." Thesis, Harvard University, 2011. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10015.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of the vertebrate limb is a progressive process characterized by initial induction and patterning, concomitant growth and morphogenesis, and subsequent cell differentiation and tissue formation. Many of these processes are regulated by specific signaling centers and the environment they create. Through both classical approaches and recent molecular studies, we are beginning to understand the roles of these signaling events during limb development. However, several questions still remain and need to be further addressed. In this dissertation, I first examine how signaling molecules regulate the proximal-distal (PD) patterning of the limb. We demonstrate that early limb mesenchyme is initially maintained in a state capable of generating all limb segments by a combination of proximal and distal signals. As the limb grows, the proximal limb is established by exposure to flank-derived signal(s), whereas the distal segments are determined by distal signals when cells grow beyond the proximal influence. Thus, these results support the “two signal model” and contradict the classical view of PD patterning by a clock-based system that was postulated in the “progress zone model”. In the second part of this work, I focus on a later developmental event and study the cell- and non-cell-autonomous function of Sonic hedgehog (Shh) during limb muscle formation. Muscle progenitor cells migrate from the lateral somites into the developing limb, where they undergo patterning and differentiation in response to local signals. We find that Shh patterns limb musculature non-cell-autonomously, acting through adjacent non-muscle mesenchyme. However, Shh functions cell-autonomously to maintain cell survival in the dermomyotome and promote slow muscle differentiation. Finally, Shh signaling is required cell-autonomously to maintain Net1 expression, which in turn regulates directional muscle cell migration in the distal limb. The dissertation ends with three appendices, describing separate studies: first, mechanisms of limb loss in snakes, second, the role of Hippo signaling in limb development, and lastly a collaborative work with Dr. Jérôme Gros on limb morphogenesis. Taken together, this dissertation provides a glimpse into the diverse roles of signaling pathways during various stages of vertebrate limb development.

Sleiman, Lyne. "The Role of cIAP2 in Early and Late Atherosclerosis Lesion Development." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/20226.

Full text
Abstract:
Cellular Inhibitor of Apoptosis 2 (cIAP2) belongs to the IAP family, a group of endogenous proteins that inhibit apoptosis. However, the physiological role of cIAP2 remains poorly defined. Knock-out (KO) and wild type (WT) mice were used to examine the effect of cIAP2 protein on the progression of atherosclerosis in apoE -/- mice. Following the high-fat diet period of 4 and 12 wks, tissues were harvested and analysis focused on the aortic root, the aortic arch, the descending aorta, and the blood. Ex vivo results show a significant decrease in aortic arch lesion area in KO vs. WT in both study groups. Results also show a decrease in aortic root lesion size in KO vs. WT in both study groups. These results support that cIAP2 is an important survival factor for lesion-associated macrophages, since loss of cIAP2 expression in this mouse model reduced atherosclerotic lesion development.

Full text
Abstract:
The extent to which the Murzuq Basin, southwest Libya was glacierised during the late Ordovician is investigated by field studies, which are complemented by LANDSAT TM and seismic data analyses. A clear four-fold glaciation during the late Ordovician is supported by sediment architectural analysis of upper Ordovician rocks and the interpretation of syn-sedimentary deformation structures contained within them. Each phase of ice sheet advance is characterised by the development of a subglacial erosion surface or a correlative glacioisostatic-Ioading surface in front of it. Evidence for subglacial erosion includes streamlined subglacial bedforms ranging in scale from striations to palaeo-ice streams. At the ice sheet termini, glaciotectonic deformation structures formed with sustained ice sheet advance. Multigenerational, cross cutting tunnel valleys were incised under enhanced hydrostatic pressure and filled during ice sheet recession. The architectural development of both tunnel valleys and their intervalley areas was dependant upon whether ice sheets were grounded in terrestrial or marine settings. During ice sheet recession, sandstone deposition occurred on ice-proximal sandar, intertidal to shallow marine ice contact fans, and laterally extensive, storm and tide dominated open shelf areas. Turbidites were deposited in the lee of continental slope aprons and within tunnel valleys. Mudrock deposition was restricted to low energy ice distal locations and topographic lows. During the final deglaciation of the basin, glacioisostatic rebound occurred and reactivated long lived basement structures, promoting regional uplift and the development of both Gilbert-type delta systems and a "structured basin", consisting of half-graben depocentres and associated forced folds.

Additionally, the spiritual life review confirms gerotranscendence and contributes to information about spiritual development in the lives of older adults. The conclusion offers a discussion about the study's limitations, strengths, implications for future research, and suggestions for clinical practice.

Abstract:
The present investigation analyzed early second language (L2) learning in adults. A common finding regarding L2 acquisition is that early learning appears to be necessary in order to perform on the same level as a native speaker. Surprisingly, many current theoretical models posit that the human ability to learn novel speech sounds remains active throughout the lifespan. In light of this fact, this project examines L2 acquisition in late learners with a special focus on L1/L2 use, input, and context of learning. Research regarding L1/L2 use has tended to be observational, and throughout the previous six decades of L2 research the role of input has been minimized and left largely unexplained. This study includes two production experiments and two perception experiments and focuses on the role of L1/L2 use and input in L2 acquisition in late learners in order to add to current research regarding their role in accurately and efficiently acquiring a novel speech sound. Moreover, this research is concerned with shedding light on when, if at all, during the acquisition process late learners begin to acquire a new, language-specific phonetic system, and the amount of exposure necessary in order to acquire L2 fine-phonetic detail. The experimental design presented in the present study also aims to shed light on the temporal relationship between production and perception with regard to category formation. To begin to fully understand these issues, the present study proposes a battery of tasks which were administered throughout the course of a domestic immersion program. Domestic immersion provides an understudied linguistic context in which L1 use is minimized, target language use is maximized, and L2 input is abundant. The results suggest that L2 phonetic category formation occurs at an early stage of development, and is perceptually driven. Moreover, early L2 representations are fragile, and especially susceptible to cross-language interference. Together, the studies undertaken for this work add to our understanding of the initial stages of the acquisition of L2 phonology in adult learners.

Adkins, Denise Rene. "Cognitive Development in Late Childhood: An Examination of Working Memory and Inhibitory Control." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27100.

Full text
Abstract:
An interactive framework of working memory and inhibitory control has been endorsed for examining cognitive development across the lifespan (Roberts & Pennington, 1996). According to this framework, the interaction between working memory and inhibitory control (WMIC) is necessary for adaptive daily functioning (Roberts & Pennington, 1996) and crucial for the development of executive functioning in childhood (Brocki & Bohlin, 2004). Empirical work from early developmental periods supports the interactive WMIC framework (e.g., Bell, 2001; Diamond, Kirkham, & Amso, 2002) and has identified sources of variability (brain electrical activity, temperament, and language) associated with WMIC functioning in infancy and early childhood (Wolfe & Bell, 2004). Although there is some evidence to suggest the interdependent nature of working memory and inhibitory control in late childhood and adulthood (Diamond, 2002; Luna, Garver, Urban, Lazar, & Sweeney, 2004), work in these later developmental periods has focused primarily on the independent processes of working memory (WM) and inhibitory control (IC) and the interactive WMIC framework has not been directly investigated from late childhood onward. Therefore, the first goal of the current study was to examine the interactive framework in a late childhood sample. The second goal of the study was to examine sources of variability in WMIC functioning in late childhood, with the intention of determining which sources of variability were associated with and contributed unique variance in explaining WMIC performance. Thirty-eight children (19 male) completed four age-appropriate interactive WMIC tasks (the color-word Stroop, the Fruit Stroop, the counting go/no-go and the Wisconsin Card Sort Test) and two language tasks. Both parents and children responded to a temperament questionnaire. Brain electrical activity was collected via EEG recordings during a two-minute baseline and WMIC tasks. The four interactive WMIC tasks were tested for relation of the independent (WM, IC) and combined (WMIC) components within tasks and across tasks. The four WMIC tasks were not correlated with one another. However, the independent (WM, IC) components were correlated both with one another and with the combined WMIC measure within each task, providing some support for an interactive framework in late childhood. The sources of variability associated with the independent (WM, IC) and combined (WMIC) components of each task were identified. These sources were used to explain both collective and unique variance in WMIC functioning for each task. Different sources of variability explained independent (WM, IC) and combined (WMIC) performance across tasks. Unique and shared contributors within and across tasks (the color-word Stroop, the Fruit Stroop, the counting go/no-go and the Wisconsin Card Sort Test) and components (WM, IC, WMIC) are discussed in an effort to determine how sources of variability may be related to WMIC functioning.<br>Ph. Brink, Ester Corné. "Creativity in the late middle childhood : development and gender differences / Ester Corné Brink." Thesis, North-West University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/167.

Abstract:
Many studies have been performed on creativity and the measurement of creativity. However, little is known about the relationship between gender differences and creativity, particularly in South Afnca. The current study aimed to investigate the difference in creativity between boys and girls, as well as the development of creativity in late middle childhood, in the South African context. From the random sample of 1000 primary school children in late middle childhood (grade 4 to 7) of different races and socio-economic strata and from different provinces in South Africa, the questionnaires of 707 children could be used. By using a single cross-sectional design, creativity was measured with subscales of the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking. The results indicated low average scores of creativity in South Afncan children. No statistically significant differences in creativity scores were found between boys and girls. Furthermore, no statistically significant differences in creativity scores were found between the 9-year-old and the 10- to 12-year-old groups, except for verbal fluency, where the 10- tol2-year-old children scored higher than the 9-year-old children. Since the creativity scores were generally lower than the norms for the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking, it is clear that the development of creativity in particular groups of South African children may be suboptimal and this phenomenon needs further investigation.<br>Thesis (M.A. (Clinical Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.

Broomell, Alleyne Patricia Ross. "Development of Neuroconnectivity and Inhibitory Control: Relation to Social Cognition in Late Childhood." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/100691.

Full text
Abstract:
Social cognition is a set of complex processes that mediate much of human behavior. The development of these skills is related to and interdependent on other cognitive processes, particularly inhibitory control, which allows for willful suppression of dominant responses. Many aspects of social behavior rely on inhibitory control to moderate impulsive or socially inappropriate behaviors and process complex perspective-taking. Furthermore, the brain regions associated with inhibitory control and social cognition overlap functionally and structurally. I review neurodevelopmental literature to suggest that social cognition is developmentally dependent on inhibitory control and that the neural foundations of both these skills are measurable in infancy. I tested this model using growth curve and structural equation modeling and show that 10-month, but not 5-month, frontotemporal coherence predicts social cognition in late childhood through preschool inhibitory control. These findings provide insight into the neurodevelopmental trajectory of cognition and suggest that connectivity from frontal regions to other parts of the brain is a foundation for the development of these skills.<br>Doctor of Philosophy

Flahive, Joseph James Fitzgerald. "The Relic Lays : a study of the development of Late Middle Gaelic Fianaigheacht." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10535.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is an analysis of a group of Fenian lays which are concerned with specific reliquia of the Fenians explained to St. Patrick, for which reason they are named 'relic lays' in this study. The most significant of these lays are 'Laoidh an Chorr-bholga', 'Laoidh Sceith Finn,' 'Laoidh Sfthil Chaoilti,' 'Laoidh Cloidhimh Oscair,' and 'Laoidh Colga Chaoilti' from Duanaire Finn ; and the tradition of Bratacha na Feine. It is significant that these texts all shew both signs of learned rather than popular composition and of greater linguistic antiquity than most other lays. The greatest body of these lays is to be found in Duanaire Finn. This study has been approached in two parts. The first part is an analysis of the development of fianaigheacht and the finding of the place of these texts within the Fenian corpus and also the wider literary tradition. The second part consists of new editions of the texts. The first part begins with an history of the fianaigheacht and scholarship of it. The scholarship is crucial to the interpretation of the texts. Duanaire Finn (and perhaps RIA 24 P 5) are manuscripts with antiquarian tendencies influenced by the type of history promoted in Tridentine ideology as evidenced by Keating, the Four Masters (as collectors of ancient texts and as writers), and other authors of the period of the Stripping of the Altars. The nineteenth century saw the importation of the seventeenth-century views into scholarship by O'Curry and others; the scholarly approaches to fianaigheacht have tended until recently to uphold or attack ideological concepts of history and not to focus on the contents of the literature. The study then progresses to analysis of the texts themselves. The analysis begins with an investigation of the language and the metre of the lays named above. The dates given to them by Prof. Murphy are reanalysed with reference to Dr. John Carey's evaluation of Murphy's method. Second, the group of lays is then evaluated as a sub-genre, comparing it to other literature, including the treatment of relics of the saints in Gaelic literature, texts relating to Fintan, The Irish Ordeals, 'Siaburcharpat Con Culainn,' earlier learned verse, and the later bardic tradition. The third part of the analysis is a discussion of the learned references in the poems. The approach to the analysis is a discussion of the symbolism of the objects around which the poems are centred and also of the learned references scattered throughout the texts, whether they be lists of Fenian lore, other native traditions, Christian learning, or Classical allusions. It is the conclusion of this section that these Jays date from the middle of the twelfth to the middle of the thirteenth centuries and arise in a learned context, probably in the reformed monastic communities of the northeast of Ireland. The second part of this thesis contains new editions of the texts described in the first part. These are preceded by introductory materials on the manuscripts in which they are found and a stemma of the five copies in two recensions of 'Laoidh Sithil Chaoilti.' All texts are presented as unaltered transcripts, as normalised texts, and in English translation. The texts edited from Duanaire Finn are 'Laoidh an Chorr-bholga,' 'Laoidh Sceith Finn,' 'Laoidh Sfthil Chaoilti,' 'Laoidh Cloidhimh Oscair,' and 'Laoidh Colga Chaoilti.' A new edition of the recension of 'Laoidh Sfthil Chaoilti' based on RIA manuscript 24 P 5 is also attempted with reference the later MSS of that textual tradition, which, it is argued, stand independent of 24 P 5. These manuscripts are Maynooth Renehan 69, RIA 24 M 2 and 23 L 34. A translation of the prose tale of that lay found in the unique Agallamh in 24 P 5 is provided for comparison. Each edition is followed by a commentary on its linguistic forms and a philological summary. The section concludes with indices nominum et locorum not only listing all persons and places in the texts, but also providing such information as is known about them from other texts or from interpretation of the names themselves.

Taylor, Sophie. "The development of social and executive functions in late adolescence and early adulthood." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2014. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/17100/.

Full text
Abstract:
Executive functions and social cognition develop throughout childhood into adolescence and early adulthood (Blakemore & Choudhury, 2006). These functions are associated with frontal networks showing protracted maturation into early adulthood (Lebel, Walker, Leemans, Phillips & Beaulieu, 2008). Executive function and social cognition studies have previously focused on childhood (Pennequin, Sorel & Fontaine, 2010), adolescence (Magar, Phillips & Hosie, 2010) or broad age ranges in adulthood (Dziobek et al., 2006). This thesis reports executive function, social cognition, IQ and mood state data in a sequential design with 98 participants aged 17 (Younger group), 18 (Middle group) and 19 years (Older group) at Time 1. Findings indicate non-linear development, with a trough in ability at age 18, on strategy generation and concept formation, assessed with Letter Fluency and Sorting Tests from the Delis Kaplan Executive Function System (Delis, Kaplan & Kramer, 2001). There were no group differences on Time 1 social cognition task scores. Fifty eight participants were tested at Time 2 (interval between testing M = 14.81 months, SD = 4.01). Again, the Younger group scored significantly higher than the Middle group on strategy generation at Time 2 suggesting that group differences may represent sample characteristics rather than age related change. There were no group differences in concept formation at Time 2, indicating that non-linear development is specific to age 18 in the present sample. Inhibition, rule detection, strategy generation, planning and emotion recognition in dynamic stimuli showed progressively better longitudinal development. IQ, Age, Depression, Anxiety and executive function scores (rule detection, strategy generation, inhibition and planning) predicted performance on social cognition tasks assessing emotion recognition in visual static (Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test; Baron-Cohen et al., 2001), auditory (Reading the Mind in the Voice Test; Golan, Baron-Cohen Hill & Rutherford, 2007), dynamic visual and auditory stimuli (Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition; Dziobek et al., 2006) and selfreport empathy (Interpersonal Reactivity Index; Davies, 1983). Overall, results indicate linear and non-linear development of functions in late adolescence and early adulthood. Clinical and educational implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:
Therefore, expanding the toolbox of a radiochemist with methods that allow late-stage labeling is highly important. The work presented in this thesis describes the development and utilization of late-stage labeling methods with carbon and fluorine. Carbonylation reactions with carbon monoxide are particularly known as mild and compatible with the late-stage labeling. The first part of the thesis describes the development of visible-light mediated palladium-catalysis using alkyl iodides as the coupling partner for the carbonylation. The mild and versatile radical aminocarbonylation protocol has shown good substrate compatibility. The use of 9-Methylfluorene-9-carbonyl chloride (COgen) allowed easy translation between unlabeled and labeled reaction. In order to bypass the synthesis of COgen which proceeds in two steps plus one step for the liberation of CO, we focused our efforts towards the one step reduction of labeled CO₂ to labeled CO using disilanes catalyzed by fluorides. The last part of this thesis discusses the development of a new positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer for P-glycoprotein (P-gp), an active transporter at the blood-brain barrier. Crizotinib is an approved treatment for non-small cell lung carcinoma and its brain accumulation is restricted by P-gp. Crizotinib was successfully labeled with ¹⁸F, and rodent studies to map P-gp and improve the delivery of crizotinib to the brain are ongoing
