Abstract:
Abstract Objectives Numerous studies have documented the relationship between education and cognitive functioning at the individual level. Yet few studies have examined whether a spouse’s education spills over to influence the other spouse’s cognitive functioning. This study, therefore, investigates the association between spousal education and cognitive functioning, the pathways that may account for this association, and gender differences in this association. Method Growth curve models were analyzed by using longitudinal couple data from the Health and Retirement Study (N = 5,846 individuals). Results More years of spousal education are associated with higher level of cognitive functioning at age 65 (γ000 = 0.0532, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.0163−0.0901) and slower decline in cognitive functioning in later adulthood (γ100 = 0.0054, 95% CI = 0.0026−0.0082). The positive association between spousal education and the level of cognitive functioning at age 65 is fully explained by economic resources. The association of spousal education with the rate of change in cognitive functioning decreases but remains significant after controlling for economic resources and health behaviors (γ100 = 0.0043, 95% CI = 0.0014−0.0072). The association between spousal education and cognitive functioning is similar for men and women. Discussion Findings suggest that more years of spousal education may slow decline in cognitive functioning for men and women in later life.

Abstract:
Objective: Timing and accumulation of work-related exposures may influence later life health. This study evaluates the association between women’s work patterns and physical functioning. Method: Work history and physical functioning information was collected at baseline for U.S. women ages 50 to 79 years in the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study ( N = 75,507). We estimated life course workforce participation patterns using latent class analysis. Associations between work patterns and physical limitations were explored using modified Poisson regression. Results: Compared with working continuously, women who left the workforce early had 8% increased risk and women who worked intermittently had 5% reduced risk of physical limitations later in life. The negative association with intermittent workforce participation was stronger for women with substantively complex work (9% reduced risk) than for women with nonsubstantively complex work (2% reduced risk). Discussion: Life course work patterns and characteristics may contribute to physical functioning later in life among women.

Lowell, Amanda F. "The role of attachment in the relationship between child maltreatment and later emotional and behavioral functioning." Honors in the Major Thesis, University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETH/id/463.

Full text
Abstract:
Childhood maltreatment is an experience that is likely to have lasting effects on individuals' emotional and behavioral functioning throughout their lifetimes. In particular, childhood maltreatment often is implicated in the etiology of numerous unfavorable psychological outcomes. Other research also suggested that there is a relationship between child maltreatment and the style of attachment that individuals exhibit post-abuse. Lastly, an association exists between individuals' attachment styles and their emotional and behavioral functioning. Despite substantial documentation of these relationships, few studies examine childhood maltreatment, attachment, and emotional and behavioral functioning collectively. As a result, this study examined the relationships among childhood maltreatment, attachment relationships, and later emotional and behavioral functioning, including eating behaviors. In addition, this study examined the role that attachment serves in the relationship between child maltreatment and later functioning. One hundred participants completed five questionnaires assessing experiences of childhood maltreatment, attachment relationships, emotional and behavioral functioning, and eating behaviors. Results of this study indicated that those individuals who report childhood maltreatment are more likely to report unfavorable emotional and behavioral functioning, whereas those who report childhood maltreatment but who exhibit a secure attachment style to either a parent or a peer are less likely to exhibit unfavorable emotional and behavioral functioning. Further, both the experience of childhood maltreatment and attachment were significant predictors of individuals' emotional and behavioral functioning. Finally, attachment contributed unique significant variance to the relationship between childhood maltreatment and emotional and behavioral functioning, particularly participants' internalizing and total problems.; Such findings suggested that secure attachment may serve as a protective factor against problematic emotional and behavioral symptoms as children reach emerging adulthood, even when individuals have had childhood maltreatment experiences earlier in their lives. The importance of studying the relationships among these variables is discussed.<br>B.S.<br>Bachelors<br>Sciences<br>Psychology

Fok, Megan. "Early Parasympathetic Activity Predicts Later Childhood Social Functioning as Mediated by Emotion Regulation." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/103751.

Full text
Abstract:
Theories of emotion regulation and social engagement indicate that resting and reactive respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), which reflect vagal activity, in early childhood can inform the development of social and emotional behaviors later in life. Low RSA at baseline and during a stressful task have been associated with symptoms of ED and disorders characterized by social impairments. The current study examined the mediating role of ED at 24-months-old (mo) on the prospective association between early infant resting and reactive RSA at 5 mo on social functioning outcomes at 48 mo, and the mediating role of social functioning at 24 mo on infant RSA at 5 mo and ED at 48 mo in 237 healthy children. It was hypothesized that ED would mediate the relationship between infant RSA and later childhood social function. Results largely indicated no support of the hypotheses and that there is no mediating effect of childhood ED on early RSA on later childhood social behavior; however, there was a significant relationship between infant resting and reactive RSA and later ED. Limitations and future directions for improving the methodology are addressed.<br>M.S.<br>Early childhood heart rate has been thought to influence the development of later child emotional and social development. The Polyvagal Theory suggests that low variability in heart rate, as measured by respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), is related to greater difficulties in emotional and social behavior. Finding an underlying biological reason for emotional and social development can be important for understanding childhood psychological disorders. This research study examined healthy children at three different time points during development: 5 months old (mo), 24 mo, 48 mo. RSA was measured at 5 mo, and frustration levels and social abilities at 24 and 48 mo. It was hypothesized that low RSA at 5 mo predicts low social abilities at 48 mo because of high frustration levels at 24 mo. To rule out an alternate hypothesis, this study also tested if low RSA at 5 mo predicts high frustration levels at 48 mo because of low social abilities at 24 mo. The results of this study did not support the predictions and there was no evidence of emotional abilities affecting how RSA predicts later social abilities. Possible explanations for the lack of findings and ideas for future research were discussed.

Levin, Laura. "Mechanisms Linking Early Behavioral Inhibition to Later Social Functioning: The Role of Autobiographical Memory Biases." Scholarly Repository, 2008. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_theses/100.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the associations between behavioral inhibition in early childhood and patterns of social-emotional functioning in adolescence. As part of a larger longitudinal study on temperament and social development, adolescents who were recruited as infants completed two tasks to assess social-cognitive biases at follow-up: an information-processing task and an autobiographical memory task. The information-processing task assessed adolescents? interpretations of ambiguous situations. Next, adolescents completed an autobiographical memory task where they were exposed to both social and neutral-cued words, and recalled the first memory that came to mind. Memories were coded for specificity, affective tone, response latency, and emotional intensity. Afterwards, adolescents were also presented with a word recall task. In addition, shyness and socially anxious behaviors were observed as adolescents participated in a self-presentation speech task with an unfamiliar peer. Behavioral inhibition at age two was found to predict higher levels of observed anxious behaviors (self-presentation anxiety) during the peer interaction. This relation appears to be mediated by a pattern of blunted affect in response to socially-cued autobiographical memories. While the relation between temperament ratings of early behavioral inhibition and the blunted memory affect was content-specific to social-cued words, current self-presentation anxiety during the peer interaction was related to a more generalized bias that was not content-specific. In addition to the blunted memory affect, adolescent self-presentation anxiety was associated with less affective interpretations on the story task, poorer word recall, slowed response times, decreased emotional intensity.

Abstract:
Background. Overgeneral Memory (OGM) is a tendency to recall summaries of events, rather than specific occasions. OGM is a predictor of psychopathology outcome and acts as a barrier to problem-solving and conjuring hope for the future. There is a current paucity of research considering OGM in older adults (OA-those over 65 years old). Aim. The aim of the current research is to explore how OGM exists within OA, and the relationship between OGM and cognitive functioning, depressive symptoms, and symptoms of post-trauma distress. Method. OA (65-96 years old, N =35) completed the Autobiographical Memory Test, Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (revised version), Geriatric Depression Scale, and Post-traumatic Distress Scale. Correlations between the variables were considered. Additionally, a regression analysis highlighted the amount of variance in OGM that could be accounted for by the variables. Results. The participants showed higher levels of OGM than is commonly found in working-aged adults. OGM was found to have a medium-sized relationship with cognitive functioning, and a small-sized relationship with depression and post-trauma distress. The relationship between depression and OGM was not significant. Post- trauma distress and OGM was only found to be significant when cognitive functioning was controlled for. The three variables accounted for 42% of the variability in OGM. There was no difference in levels of OGM when cue words were positive or negative emotive words. Conclusions. Cognitive impairment had a greater influence on OGM than depression and post-trauma distress. However a significant proportion of the sample showed levels of cognitive impairment. The implications of OA demonstrating increased levels of OGM are important in considering clinical implications, including barriers to therapeutic progress and problem-solving difficulties. The application of these findings to the current model of OGM are considered.

Abstract:
This chapter begins with sections covering several different perspectives on early psychological development ranging from the phenomenological perspective to underpinning laboratory research. Research methods and designs used are described briefly. Theories of abnormal psychological development discussed include underlying cognitive theories, including theory of mind, central coherence, and executive functioning abilities, followed by underpinning biological science including neurobiology. Concepts mentioned include the idea of disability, neurodiversity versus disability, leading to the introduction of the need for reasonable adjustments to such disabilities. This will be expanded in later chapters. Also introduced are the topics of cause—genetic and environmental. The chapter then details what has been said of autism as an atypical (abnormal) variant on typical (normal) development, in order to provide a basic understanding of the nature of autism. Early signs of typical and atypical development are listed in order to set the basis for assessment methods described in later chapters.

Abstract:
The governmental institutions of the British Empire functioned effectively in the mid-eighteenth century in the interests of royal officials, merchants, and others in Great Britain as well as in the interests of the inhabitants of most of its thirteen colonies. Of course, there were some difficulties—some disputes went unresolved, some taxes unpaid, and some criminals never punished. The main work of the legal system was debt collection, and despite many inefficiencies, the system functioned well enough for the flow of lending and credit to continue. From the perspective of 1750, it was inconceivable that the empire would come apart a quarter of a century later.

Abstract:
Attachment theory suggests that early relationships with significant others play a critical role in later interpersonal relationships. Attachment styles have a significant impact on social functioning. Since personality disorders are characterized by abnormal social-interpersonal functioning, it is surprising that attachment abnormalities in personality disorders remain mostly unexplored. This chapter describes definitions and measures of attachment and briefly reviews the neurobiology of attachment. Then it describes the evidence demonstrating abnormalities in attachment in personality disorders. Finally, the psychotherapeutic implications of different attachment styles are reviewed and attachment-focused treatments for personality disorders are described. A conclusion and future directions end the chapter.

Abstract:
Chapter 1, “Introduction: The Aging Population,” discusses the prevalent mental health disorders experienced by older adults, including depression, dementia, substance abuse, and severe mental illness. This chapter also sets the context for practice with older clients by examining the factors that influence psychological well-being in late life. As individuals age, they become increasingly diverse. Gender and race differentials found throughout life are accompanied and heightened by disparities in later-life health, physical functioning, and cognitive status. Variations in older adult cohorts, from those who were raised during the Great Depression to baby boomers who came to age during a period of growing prosperity and substance use, are also discussed. Finally, elements of practice with a diverse population of adults are presented.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the incipient role of acculturation in cigarette smoking, tobacco use, and use of illicit drugs in Hispanic youth in the United States. It first examines the conceptual foundations of acculturation, including early unidimensional models and later bidimensional and multicomponent perspectives of acculturation. It then reviews empirical studies linking acculturation with cigarette/tobacco and, separately, illicit drug use among Hispanic youth. The cumulative body of evidence is reviewed in terms of methodological strengths and weaknesses and how they sharpen our focus on acculturation in development. The chapter also examines three key developmental mechanisms that may account for the underlying relations between acculturation and drug use: (1) cultural stress, (2) family functioning, and (3) change in cognitive functioning related to drug use. The chapter closes with several recommendations that may help clarify the developmental linkages between acculturation and Hispanic youth drug use and should be addressed by future research.

Abstract:
Recently, calls have been made for an increased focus on successful development in young people and how optimal developmental pathways can be promoted. The concept of healthy functioning or positive development is particularly relevant to the emerging-adulthood period because of the significant potential for positive change and redirection of life pathways observed during this time. This chapter focuses on one empirically tested model of positive development in emerging adulthood developed with data from the Australian Temperament Project. Positive development is conceptualized as comprising the dimensions of civic action and engagement, trust and tolerance of others, trust in authorities and organizations, social competence, and life satisfaction. A growing body of research suggests that positive development in emerging adulthood is an important asset for young people, with distinct developmental antecedents and consequences for later functioning. The findings provide possible targets for interventions to promote healthy developmental pathways into adulthood.

Abstract:
Prenatal exposure to teratogens may alter fetal development and significantly impact later life. Perhaps the best known teratogen is alcohol; prenatal alcohol exposure causes a broad range of effects that can cause lifelong impairment. Of greatest significance are the functional impairments in behavior and cognition. Recognition of these impairments led to the inclusion of the neurobehavioral disorder associated with prenatal alcohol exposure (ND-PAE) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders under “conditions for further study.” This proposed diagnosis captures the significant neurodevelopmental and mental health impacts associated with prenatal alcohol exposure and requires impairment in neurocognitive functioning, self-regulation, and adaptive functioning. This chapter reviews clinical impacts of prenatal alcohol exposure, with particular focus on ND-PAE. Methods for comprehensively assessing fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, specifically ND-PAE, are discussed as well as preliminary evidence for implementing effective interventions with these individuals.

Abstract:
AbstractNational courts are actors in investment arbitration since they influence the functioning of investment arbitration and are themselves in turn influenced by investment arbitration. The influence of national courts on investment arbitration is larger than the influence of other international courts and tribunals, since national law is part of the applicable law in investment arbitration and national courts are authorised to interpret and apply national law. National courts influence investment arbitration by competing for jurisdiction through the exhaustion of local remedies, umbrella clauses, and the fork-in-the-road rule. National courts facilitate investment arbitration by enforcing awards and at the same time disrupt it when rejecting enforcement or issuing anti-arbitration injunctions. Investment tribunals can restrain national courts by issuing anti-suit injunctions. Above all, they can review the decisions of national courts on grounds of denial of justice, fair and equitable treatment, the effective means test, and indirect expropriation. The the relationship between national courts and investment tribunals is such that the later have the last word, although the role of national courts as actors is certainly noteworthy.

Abstract: The 1927 “Palace of the league of Nations in Geneva” contest meant a crucial moment for Le Corbusier in his work, amongst other things due to the subsequent raising media repercussion, helping him scheme his image to an international level. The complex palace proposal synthetizes and applies some of Le Corbusier’s main preoccupations, and opens at the same time new research fronts for future projects. An important drawing work ushers the architecture challenge. The rich design information, contained in those drawings, documents both the landscaping and the functioning proposal, as subtle constructive details. The drawings, in the formal and technical aspects, shape part of a series of proof on Le Corbusier’s representation system for these years. Although the exploration on graphic techniques risks the possibility of him winning the contest, it also gives him the opportunity to reutilize such documents for new editorial adventures such as: “Une maison, un palais”, “Vers une architecture” and “Œuvre Complète”. The study of the drawings deepens the work procedure, as well as the research he went through for an architecture project when is meant to be published in massive media. At the same time, it reasserts an innovation perspective unique of his work as an agitator and divulging person of modern architecture. Abstract:
Abstract During the product development stage, designers often face the task of partitioning a product into functioning parts. Unfortunately, most decomposition decisions are made based on product functionality while the product manufacturability is usually ignored. As a result, the resulting parts can be too expensive to manufacture or sometimes impossible to make. In this paper, we present a systematic approach to help designers decompose sheet-metal products. This approach is primarily driven by product manufacturability. It takes into account the manufacturability of sheet metal cutting, bending and assembly processes, while trying to minimize the number of parts. To overcome the combinatorial nature of the decomposition problem, a develop-first-decompose-later strategy is used. The decomposition goes back and forth between the design and decomposition modules to achieve sub-optimal results. The decomposition results are sent to the corresponding process planners and a complete production plan is produced. A prototype system has been developed to demonstrate the proposed approach. Several decomposition examples are also presented.

Abstract:
Background and objectives. Video game addiction (VGA) is characterized by a pattern of impaired control gaming behavior, prioritizing gaming over other daily activities and responsibilities. The rapid increases of the VGA rates worldwide advice the urge of new studies focused on examining the existence of differences in the phenotype of patients treatment-seeking due the problematic video game use. Method. Sample comprised n=107 participants recruited at the Pathological Gambling Outpatients Unit of the Bellvitge University Hospital (Barcelona). Mean age was 24.1 yrs-old (SD=10). Most participants were men (91.6%), single (88.8%) and into mean-low to low social position indexes (84.1%). Two-step clustering analysis explored empirical latent groups based on a broad set of indicators, including sociodemographic, psychopathological state and personality traits. Results. Two exclusive groups emerged. Cluster 1 (labeled as moderate maladaptative functioning, n=72, 66.1%), was composed mainly by single, unemployed men, with the younger age of onset, the earlier onset of the video game problematic use, the shorter progression of the problems, better psychopathological state and more functional personality traits. Cluster 2 (labeled as severe maladaptative functioning, n=35, 32.7%), included a higher proportion of not-single and employed women, with an older age, a later onset and a longer duration of the video game related problems, worse psychopathological state and more dysfunctional personality profile. Conclusion. VGA is a heterogeneous group with regard to gambling phenotypes. The identification of the diverse latent classes provide empirical evidence contributing to the conceptualization of this behavioral addition, as well as for developing reliable and valid screening tools and effectiveness intervention plans focused on the precise characteristics of the patients.

Abstract:
In 17 consecutive cadaveric kidney transplant recipients F VIII:C and vWFag were repeatedly determined before transplantation and during 4 months thereafter. Graft biopsy was performed in 12 patients for deterioration of renal function. F VIII:C was determined by a one stage clotting assay using F VIII:C deficient substrate plasma. vWFag was assayed by electroimmunoassay using specific rabbit anti-human vWFag antibodies. Results of F VIII:C and vWFag are expressed referring to NHP as 100%.Results: 2/17 patients lost their graft due to irreversible vascular rejection, 2/17 patients had reversible vascular rejection, 2/17 patients developped glomerulonephritis, 6/17 patients showed acute or chronic CyA nephrotoxicity. In 5/17 patients graft biopsy was not necessary. Despite normalisation of renal function (serum creatinine levels&lt;150umol/L) in 9 out of 17 patients F VIII:C (239 ± 66% to 408 ± 74%, mean ± SD) remained elevated in all 17 patients. vWFag (181 ± 29% to 454 ± 84%) was normalised in only 2 out of 17 patients. CyA dosis and CyA blood levels were not correlated with F VIII:C and vWFag. All 4 patients with histological vascular rejection, both patients with later developping glomerulonephritis and 3 out of 6 patients with later developping CyA nephrotoxicity showed F VIII:C/vWFag quotients &gt; 1 (1,1 to 1,3) Four out of 5 patients with well functioning graft had F VIII:C/ vWFag quotients consistently &lt;1 (0,68 to 0,92).Conclusion: 1. The elevated F VIII:C and vWFag levels in chronic renal failure are not normalised during 4 months of observation despite normalisation of renal function by transplantation and immunosuppression with CyA.2. A quotient F VIII :C/vWFag &lt; 1 may indicate a good prognosis for kidney allograft function in the absence of CyA nephrotoxicity whereas later developping graft rejection or glomerulonephritis were associated with F VIII:C/vWFag&gt;1.

Abstract:
This paper describes Sonifyd, a sonification driven multimedia and audiovisual environment based on color-sound conversion for real-time manipulation. Sonifyd scans graphics horizontally or vertically from a scan line, generates sound and determines timbre according to its own additive synthesis based color-to-sound mapping. Color and sound relationships are fixed as default, but they can be organic for more tonal flexibility. Within this ecosystem, flexible timbre changes will be discovered by Sonifyd. The scan line is invisible, but Sonifyd provides another display that represents the scanning process in the form of dynamic imagery representation. The primary goal of this project is to be a functioning tool for a new kind of visual music, graphic sonification research and to further provide a synesthetic metaphor for audiences/users in the context of an art installation and audiovisual performance. The later section is a discussion about limitations that I have encountered: using an additive synthesis and frequency modulation technique with the line scanning method. In addition, it discusses potential possibilities for the future direction of development in relation to graphic expression and sound design context.

Abstract:
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the cause for over 70% of global deaths. Various levels of healthcare delivery from home-care to tertiary care exist for patients where patients with NCDs are treated. Demand for services provided by tertiary level institutions has increased tremendously along with the growth and prevalence of chronic diseases. Few of the other reasons include co-morbidities, greater complexities of diseases, greater public expectations, higher life expectancy, an aging baby-boomer population, identification of diseases at later stages of life and deferral of care among many other complex scenarios. Globally, rising demand for healthcare services presently sets challenges of under-capacity and under-staffed healthcare infrastructure. With the advent of technology in healthcare and by providing tools in the hands of patients, a shift in healthcare delivery is evidenced towards early detection of diseases and prevention as a means of patient-care and for tackling non-communicable diseases. Evidence based delivery models tend to focus on patient experience in the course of treatment. This has consequences on the physical spaces where care is delivered, as the focus shifts from the space to the patient. This paper explores how greater demand to address prevalence of non-communicable diseases and the advent of technology can create opportunities for development of healing spaces. For patient-centric care, this would entail from inclusion of technologically driven healthcare environment within a home-care setting to improving the functional efficiencies within existing and proposed tertiary level hospitals for patient-centered care. The notion of bringing hospital (healthcare) to the patient is becoming a necessity to create a future where patients would depend less on the model of in-efficiently functioning tertiary level hospitals and a greater effort will be required towards home-settings, applying the adage 'prevention is better than cure.'

Abstract:
The flagship of modern geography is the modeling of geographical systems and the processes of their functioning, based on huge databases and algorithms for multidimensional computer modeling of the behavior of complex multiply connected systems. The modeling process itself is based on a powerful apparatus for mathematical analysis and statistical processing of the basic parameters of objects, based on which simulation models of their functioning and development are built. The river basin is the most widespread natural object on the land surface, which has distinct boundaries, structural organization, hierarchy, and relative isolation of matter and energy flows. In describing the structure of the catchment of a river system, ordinal classifications are traditionally applied. The ordinal classification of watercourses is based on the fundamental property of river flows to form a tree structure with successive merging with a stepwise increase in the main parameters of the system. The stability of the structure is supported by the continuous activity of powerful flows of matter and energy. The descending ordinal classification of R. Horton 7 was widely used, which was based on the proposition that unbranched elementary watercourses are similar under different conditions and should have the smallest 1st order, forming second order watercourses at the time how 2nd order watercourses form a 3rd order watercourse, etc. Also, Horton, based on an analysis of the structure of river networks and their basins, proposed the laws of correlation of the main characteristics of watercourses of different orders. Later, the Horton ordinal classification was finalized by A. Straler 6, who excluded the concept of the main river, which along its entire length has the maximum order, although it structurally consists of many differentorder segments. Classification data is now considered to be considered in a single context as the HortonStrahler classification. As early as the 19th century, the thesis was expressed that watersheds and thalwegs are the main structural lines of the relief and are closely interconnected 2, determining the distribution of matter and energy flows in the catchment. Using the classification of HortonStrahler watercourses, the principle of the classification of watersheds is proposed. Based on the authors methodology for processing digital elevation models (DEM) using GIS tools, the use of ordinal characteristics of watersheds was tested to obtain detailed information on variations of the main characteristics of singleorder elements of the river network depending on the order of the watershed within the Ussuri River Basin.

Abstract:
In low/intermediate-level waste (L/ILW) repositories, anaerobic corrosion of metals and degradation of organic materials produce hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide. Gas migration in a L/ILW repository is one of the processes evaluated in the safety assessment of deep geological disposal in low-permeability formations, in particular with respect to the development of gas pressures in the repository caverns which could negatively affect the host rock or the engineered barrier system (EBS). In order to restrict build-up of gas overpressures in the emplacement caverns, Nagra (National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste, Switzerland) has proposed design options aimed at increasing the gas transport capacity of the backfilled underground structures, compromising neither the low hydraulic conductivity nor the radionuclide retention capacity of the EBS (Nagra, 2008). They involve specially designed backfill and sealing materials such as high porosity mortars as backfill materials for the emplacement caverns and sand/bentonite (S/B) mixtures with a bentonite content of 20% to 30% for the seals themselves and for backfilling other underground structures. These increased gas permeability materials can supplement the gas flow that is expected to occur through the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) and avoid the creation of overpressures. Preliminary experimental studies have confirmed the gas transport capacity of the S/B mixtures and demonstrated the ability to design mixtures with specific target permeabilities for water and gas flow (Nagra, 2008). Two-phase flow modelling studies have shown that the gas transport capacity of seals is largely dependent on their permeability and length. More detailed models of sealing elements show a rather complex history of seal saturation during the early saturation phase and the later gas escape phase (Gaus et al., 2010). Note, however, that current modelling approaches are based on parameters and conceptual understanding of small-scale laboratory experiments. Two large(r) scale experiments which aim at validating and, if necessary, improving current conceptual models for the resaturation and gas invasion processes into S/B seals and the determination of up-scaled gas / water permeabilities of S/B seals (i.e. two-phase flow parameters for large-scale models) have been initiated and will be highlighted in the paper. The first one, a mock-up experiment, was set up in 2010 as part of the EU 7th FP project FORGE, aiming at demonstrating seal performance on an intermediate (decimetre scale). The second one is a large-scale experiment (metre-scale), the Gas-Permeable Seal Test (GAST), which was also initiated in 2010 at the Grimsel Test Site (GTS). For GAST, a seal will be emplaced at the GTS to demonstrate the effective functioning of gas-permeable seals on a realistic scale and with realistic boundary conditions (‘proof of concept’).

Abstract:
Lake Arakhley is located within the Lake Baikal basin in Eastern Siberia, Russia. The area is characterized by continental subarctic climate with considerate diurnal temperature range, long cold dry winters and short hot summers with more precipitation occurring during the latter half of the summer. Climatic shifts in high water years and low water years result in morphometric changes in the lake and in the chemical and physical parameters of the ecosystem. During low water years, concentrations of ammonium nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen are decreased, whereas nitrate concentration increases. High water years feature average concentrations of ammonium ions 1.5–2 times higher than the values of recent dry years. Redundancy analysis (RDA) of abiotic factors and biotic community indicated that the community structure shows the greatest correlation with physical and chemical parameters of water and biogenic elements (nitrites, ammonium, phosphates) along the first axis, and with the lake depth and transparency along the second axis. Changes in abiotic factors induce functioning and formation of characteristic communities of the primary producers in the trophic structure of the ecosystem. During low water years, with increased level of autochthonous organic matter, Lindavia comta dominance is observed, while during high water years, with increased allochthonous organic matter Asterionella formosa appeared as dominant. Currently, during low water years, the hydrophytes community is monodominant and composed of Ceratophyllum demersum. Meanwhile, such species indicating eutrophic conditions as Myriophyllum sibiricum, Potamogeton pectinatus are found in the lake vegetation.

Community involvement in reproductive health: Findings from research in Karnataka, India. Population Council, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh17.1007.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1996, the government of India decided to provide a package of reproductive and child health services through the existing family welfare program, adopting a community needs assessment approach (CNAA). To implement this approach, the government abolished its practice of setting contraceptive targets centrally and introduced a decentralized planning strategy whereby health workers assessed the reproductive health needs of women in their respective areas and prepared local plans to meet those needs. They also involved community leaders to promote community participation in the reproductive and child health program. Since 1998, several evaluation studies have assessed the impact of CNAA on the program’s performance and community participation. These studies showed that the performance of the maternal health-care program improved, whereas the functioning of the family planning program initially declined but later recovered. The approach achieved little in boosting community involvement. This project tested a new model of health committee to help stimulate community participation in reproductive and child health activities at the village level. The experiment, described in this report, was conducted in the Hunsur block of the Mysore District in Karnataka for two years. Researchers evaluated the impact in terms of community involvement and utilization of reproductive and child health services.
