Abstract:
This systematic review examined use of Lamb and Kallal’s (1992) Functional, Expressive, and Aesthetic (FEA) Consumer Needs Model and integrated Apparel Design (AD) Framework within scholarly journal publications. The 126 peer-reviewed articles citing Lamb and Kallal published in English between 1992 and 2017 were the focus of this article. We identify the breadth of citations across the 25-year time span, examine application of the FEA Model and/or the AD Framework, and identify and confirm use of the FEA Model as a theoretical framework. Authors used the consumer needs focus to assess FEA criteria for products targeted to various consumer groups and product types. Findings indicate that the FEA Model has been applied under a variety of conditions to understand consumer needs, inform the design process, confirm the utility of the model, and demonstrate the strength and flexibility of the FEA Model. Future research directions are suggested.

Thesis, Lyon, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LYSE1227/document.

Abstract:
This selection of information that operates both in space and time, results from the integration of sensory information and higher-level control according to our goals. This function depends on a cerebral network including the fronto-parietal system. It is also under the influence of different neuromodulators, in particular norepinephrine, the action of which is still poorly understood. The aim of my PhD work was to understand the role of norepinephrine on attentional processes. My objectives were, on the one hand, to test our hypothesis that norepinephrine is capable of acting on the different facets of attention (spatial attention and sustained attention) and, on the other hand, to elucidate the mechanisms of action by which noradrenaline exerts its action. To answer these questions, we tested the impact of an increase in noradrenergic transmission (intramuscular administration of atomoxetine) in monkeys, using behavioral tasks requiring a selection of visual information in space (cued attentional task and spontaneous image exploration) or over time (go/nogo discrimination task). Our results demonstrate that atomoxetine facilitates attentional processes both in space and over time. In space, atomoxetine modulates the orientation of visuospatial attention according to the context, adjusting the rate of sensory accumulation or the impact of image saliency on attention orientation. Over time, atomoxetine adjusts the relationship between the sensitivity to discriminate a target among distractors and the animal’s response bias.In summary, my results demonstrate that norepinephrine influences both the spatial and temporal facets of attention and suggests an action through an adjustment of sensory information processing and an adjustment of attention control to the context

Abstract:
This thesis presents the studies of whispering gallery mode laser dynamics in order to realize a micro-wave source using simultaneous oscillations in a unique whispering gallery mode micro-laser. We show experimental results on the relative intensity noise (RIN) of a Whispering Gallery Mode Laser in ZBLALiP glass doped with Er3+ ions. Besides the pure laser specifications, the RIN spectrum gives informations about the dynamics inside the cavity, such as photon lifetime, effective pumping rate and noise sources. Moreover, we have shown that a single-mode emission comes with the presence of multiple harmonics of the relaxation frequency. The theoretical model taking account the non-linear coupling between photons and atoms allows us to determine the mode volume of the whispering gallery mode in laser regime, which is quite difficult to evaluate in this regime. On the other hand, we have studied the laser dynamics in an industrial IOG-1 glass codoped with Yb3+/Er3+ ions where the signature of a modal coupling, induced by Rayleigh scattering, lies in the RIN spectrum. In this particular case, the two coupled modes operate above threshold. The observed behavior is compared with thoses of a solid state gyro-laser

Chen, Jie. "Modelling of Laser Welding of Aluminium using COMSOL Multiphysics." Thesis, KTH, Materialvetenskap, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-284448.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a modelling approach of laser welding process of aluminium alloy from the thermo-mechanical point of view to evaluate the occurrence of hot cracking based on simulation results and relevant criteria. The model was created stepwise in COMSOL Multiphysics, starting with the thermal model where heat conduction of solid and liquid phase was computed. Then the CFD model was created by involving the driving forces of liquid motion in the weld pool, i.e. natural convection and Marangoni effect. Lastly, the temperature profile calculated by the CFD model was loaded into the mechanical model for computation of thermal stress and strain. The mechanical results were required in  criteria for measuring the  susceptibility of hot cracking. The main findings include that Marangoni effect plays a dominant role in generating the fluid flow and convective heat flux in the weld pool, thus enhancing the heat dissipation and lowering temperature in the workpiece. By contrast, such temperature reduction caused by the air convection, radiation and natural convection is negligible. The welding track further from the clamped side experiences smaller transversal residual stress, but it does not necessarily suggest higher susceptibility to hot cracking according to the applied criteria. It can be concluded judging from current results that these first models of laser welding process work satisfactorily. There is still a work to do to obtain the full maturity of this model due to its limitation and some assumptions made for simplicity.<br>Denna avhandling presenterar en modelleringsmetod för lasersvetsningsprocessen av aluminiumlegering ur termomekanisk synvinkel för att utvärdera förekomsten av het sprickbildning baserat på simuleringsresultat och relevanta kriterier.

Die Ableitung volumenbezogener Größen erfolgt über die Invertierung von Schallparameterwerten (akustische Tomographie)<br>Atmospheric models, which searching by means of numerical methods after a solution of the thermodynamic equations under determined border conditions over a given underground (landscape), forecast volume averaged values of corresponding parameters. The experimental registrated values for meteorolgical parameters used for the validation of models represent usually point values. In following chapters theoretical estimations and an experimental measuring method are presented which volume averaged values of meteorolgical parameters provide and so rather firm data for numerical atmospheric models deliver. The proceedings use horizontal spreading of acoustic waves in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer. Derivation of volume averaged parameters results from the invertation of acoustic parameter values (acoustic tomography)

Abstract:
Abstract Excitable cells are of vital importance in biology, and mathematical models have contributed significantly to understand their basic mechanisms. However, classical models of excitable cells are based on severe assumptions that may limit the accuracy of the simulation results. Here, we derive a more detailed approach to modeling that has recently been applied to study the electrical properties of both neurons and cardiomyocytes. The model is derived from first principles and opens up possibilities for studying detailed properties of excitable cells. We refer to the model as the EMI model because both the extracellular space (E), the cell membrane (M) and the intracellular space (I) are explicitly represented in the model, in contrast to classical spatial models of excitable cells. Later chapters of the present text will focus on numerical methods and software for solving the model. Also, in the next chapter, the model will be extended to account for ionic concentrations in the intracellular and extracellular spaces.

Abstract:
AbstractIn 2010, Fuhrmann et al. argued for enhancing modeler productivity by providing tooling that, put simply, combines the best of textual and graphical worlds. They referred to this as pragmatics, and argued that a key enabler would be the ability to automatically synthesize customized graphical views from a (possibly textual) model. The model would be the “ground truth” used, for example, for downstream code synthesis and simulation; the graphical views would typically be abstractions from the model serving various purposes, including documentation.Twelve years later, we reflect on their proposal, and illustrate the current state with the recently developed polyglot coordination language Lingua Franca (LF). LF has been designed with pragmatics in mind since early on, and some characteristics of LF make it particularly suited for pragmatics-aware programming and modeling. However, the underlying pragmatic principles are broadly applicable, and by now a set of mature open source tools is available for putting them into practice.

AbstractOne of the most influential models in healthcare organisation and finance is the so-called Semashko model. This chapter scrutinises its origins in the Soviet Union and its expansion to Central and Eastern Europe. Its creation and later its spatial expansion were both by-products of war. While the Russian Revolution of October 1917 (brought about by the First World War) was the starting point for the development and introduction of the Semashko model, its spatial expansion was precipitated by the end of the Second World War when the Soviet healthcare model was (forcibly) exported to large parts of Central and Eastern Europe. Even though the initial success of the healthcare model ended in crisis, its legacies still influence healthcare policies in this region today.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter discusses the links between Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the CapSEM Model. It suggests placing these SDGs along the four Levels of the model to serve as a starting point for organizations’ engagement with the goals and their objectives. The location of SDGs in the nested system perspective or ‘wedding cake model’ according to Griggs et al. (Nature 495:305–307, 2013) and later Rockström and Sukhdev (New way of viewing the sustainable development goals and how they are all linked to food. Stockholm Resilience Centre/Stockholm University, 2016) situates the economic system within the societal system, which is situated within the system of the biosphere and helps to conceptualize the interconnections between SDGs and the dimensions of sustainability. Taking a similar systems thinking approach, the CapSEM Model situates sustainability and environmental management methods and tools within the systems of business operation and production. Extending and merging these two perspectives, the SDGs are placed along the CapSEM Model to provide a point of engagement for organizations to align their activities with SDG objectives.

Abstract:
Abstract: From the pages of L'Esprit Nouveau and inspired by films, Elie Faure coined the term "cineplástique" to refer to the combination betweenimages and music, similarly to theMethode Dalcroze in dancing. Le Corbusier, Albert Jeanneret and Pierre Chenal proposed two filmic experiences related to this new concept- "Batir" and "L'Architecture d'aujourd´hui". Several models were made specifically for these films and designed to be viewed on screen. This feature became more complex in the film of the proposal model for Palace of Soviets. Le Corbusier displayed a process consisting onthede-montageof the object, reversing thus the path to the actual building, which allows the viewer to become familiar from the start with the finished piece. Thereafter ,as if it was an "écorché", their insides are displayed, featuring an architectural anatomy lesson which ends with the empty site of Salvador, where the brightness of the large steel arch ("Stal" in Russian)is reflected in the Moskva River. This filming resource is related to Sergei Eisenstein's theories of " montage as conflict", illustrated by a scale model that also verifies the effectiveness of form with respect to acoustic waves, in line with those made by engineers such as Gustave Lyon. Therefore, the combination of movement, space and sound is achieved through the architectural model. That is the seed of acoustic architecture. Abstract:
Abstract: Charles Lasnon, "mouleur",represents the coexistence between the Arts and Crafts and the new rendering techniques related to photography that took place in the first quarter of the twentieth century. Commissioned by Le Corbusier, Lasnon made in those years several models that represent his new proposals at a domestic and urban scale. That was the first approach to a three-dimensional expression of his theories –the scale models of 1:20 from "Salon d'Automne" in 1922 and 1923, which were halfway between objet-types and avant-garde sculptures, and the theories of "L'Urbanisme à trois dimensions" from Plan Obus and Nemours. The scale-models of "Villas" were established as “aesthetic and architectural manifestos”. They were used to test theoretical and plastic principles, formulated before the idea of construction. These tests resulted in "transfers" between plaster-craft scale models and the architecture to be built. Additionally, the links between Lasnon and the “Service Geographique de l’Armée” enabled him to be familiar with new techniques to represent landscape. Thus, Lasnon made the Carte-Reliefs d'Argel at the same time as Le Corbusier made the models for the urban proposals in Alger. These models not only guarantee the geometrical accuracy of his proposals, but also capture an original landscape whose topography is modeled as if it was a plastic craftwork. Utopias seeking an imaginary place on a plaster slice. Palabras clave: maqueta; moulage; Charles Lasnon; urbanismo; plan-relief; Salón de Otoño. Abstract:
Surface asperities can range widely in size. Therefore it is important to characterize the effect of size and scale on the contact mechanics. This work presents a molecular model of asperity contact in order to characterize small scale asperity contact. The model is also compared to existing continuum mechanics based models developed originally by Hertz for elastic contact and later expanded by others to include plasticity. It appears that the predictions can be related to each other and that the continuum material properties can be related to the properties describing the molecular forces.

Abstract:
Abstract: This paper explores Le Corbusier’s practice of collecting and studying everyday objects as inspiration for new architectural ideas. An avid collector of ‘objets trouves’ that Le Corbusier referred to specifically as ‘objets à réaction poètique,’ he promoted their use claiming they gave direction to an imagination that alone might not be able to detect. Perhaps the most famous object in Le Corbusier’s collection was a crab shell that he used as inspiration for the design of the roof for his Notre-Dame du Haut chapel in Ronchamp, France. Although Le Corbusier’s use of this shell is well documented in studies on his oeuvre, little attention has been given to the role he intended found objects to play in his design process. In themselves these objects, which have their own identities as shells, pinecones or pieces of bone, they do not immediately lend themselves to any architectural solution. Rather, they are evidence of Le Corbusier’s unique approach to design that relies on a what Louis Pasteur referred to as a ‘prepared mind,’ availed of all relevant data and information pertaining to a task, that can search for solutions in random object or events by spontaneously shift back and forth between analytic and associative modes of thought. Abstract:
Abstract: At the same time as the initial development of air conditioning systems for indoor climate control in buildings were occurring in USA, Le Corbusier and Lyon made truly innovative proposals for different projects he was working on in Europe. These served to generate homogenous thermal environments and focused on the combined effect of his mur neutralisant and respiration exacte. The clearest example of their shortcomings is the City of Refuge in Paris (1930-33). Given the technological and economic mistrust towards these proposals, as it was impossible to execute these according to the original plan these were not pursued. CFD simulations carried out by our research team confirm that the mur neutralisant and respiration exacte for the City of Refuge in Paris would have functioned together if they had been executed following the original plans. The main aim of this paper is to confirm the validity of the mur neutralisant as an active thermal system for buildings. Firstly, the results of the tests carried out by the engineers of Saint Gobain are compared to the results of the CFD simulations. Based on the comparison of the results from the physical models tested in Saint Gobain laboratories and CFD energy model simulations, a possible calibration is proposed for CFD which might prompt the establishment of other operation hypotheses. Abstract:
Colombia is particularly affected by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) weather fluctuations. In this context, this study explores how the adverse weather events linked to ENSO affect the inflation expectations in Colombia and how to incorporate these second-round effects into a small open economy New Keynesian model. Using BVARx models we provide evidence that the inflation expectations obtained from surveys and break-even inflation measures are affected by weather supply shocks. Later, using this stylised fact, we modify one of the core forecasting models of the Banco de la República by incorporating the mechanisms in which weather-related shocks affect marginal costs and inflation expectations. We find that ENSO shocks had an important role in both inflation and the dynamics of inflation expectations, and that policymakers should consider this fact.

Abstract:
The most prominent measure to moderate the escalation of electricity prices during 2022 has been the gas cap implemented exceptionally in Spain and Portugal. We present here the most accurate, rigorous and updated estimate of the effects of this measure on the regulated electricity tariff, known as the "Precio de Venta del Pequeño Consumidor (PVPC), which directly replicates the wholesale market price. To do so, we update the data we presented in September until the end of December 2022, comparing the real evolution of this tariff with a statistical model that draws the same line but in an alternative world in which the gas cap is not applied. After six months, the electricity bill at the regulated tariff in Spain is 32% cheaper than it would be in a world without the Iberian exceptionality: according to our estimate, the resulting saving for the whole of 2022 was around €209 per consumer. Moreover, inflation in 2022 would have been 0.3 points higher without a gas cap: 8.7%, instead of the 8.4% observed. In other words: half of Spain's better situation compared to the Eurozone can be attributed to this measure. On the negative side, the higher consumption of gas for electricity generation continues and the lower price of Spanish electricity, which would have facilitated the increase in exports to France with the consequent risk of subsidization in favor of French consumers at the expense of Spanish consumers.

Simulating environmental conditions for Southwest United States convective dust storms using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model v4.1. Abstract:
Dust aerosols can pose a significant detriment to public health, transportation, and tactical operations through reductions in air quality and visibility. Thus, accurate model forecasts of dust emission and transport are essential to decision makers. While a large number of studies have advanced the understanding and predictability of dust storms, the majority of existing literature considers dust production and forcing conditions of the underlying meteorology independently of each other. Our study works to-wards filling this research gap by inventorying dust-event case studies forced by convective activity in the Desert Southwest United States, simulating select representative case studies using several configurations of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, testing the sensitivity of forecasts to essential model parameters, and assessing overall forecast skill using variables essential to dust production and transport. We found our control configuration captured the initiation, evolution, and storm structure of a variety of convective features admirably well. Peak wind speeds were well represented, but we found that simulated events arrived up to 2 hours earlier or later than observed. Our results show that convective storms are highly sensitive to initialization time and initial conditions that can preemptively dry the atmosphere and suppress the growth of convective storms.

Abstract:
Net-zero climate policies foresee deployment of atmospheric carbon dioxide removal wit geological, terrestrial, or marine carbon storage. While terrestrial and geological storage would be governed under the framework of national property rights, marine storage implies that carbon is transferred from one global common, the atmosphere, to another global common, the ocean, in particular if storage exceeds beyond coastal applications. This paper investigates the option of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and storage in different (marine) reservoir types in an analytic climate-economy model, and derives implications for optimal mitigation efforts and CDR deployment. We show that the introduction of CDR lowers net energy input and net emissions over the entire time path. Furthermore, CDR affects the Social Cost of Carbon (SCC) via changes in total economic output but leaves the analytic structure of the SCC unchanged. In the first years after CDR becomes available the SCC is lower and in later years it is higher compared to a standard climate-economy model. Carbon dioxide emissions are first higher and then lower relative to a world without CDR. The paper provides the basis for the analysis of decentralized and potentially non-cooperative CDR policies.

Bach, Christian Friis, and Ken Pearson. Implementing Quotas in GTAP Using GEMPACK or How to Linearize an Inequality. GTAP Technical Paper, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.21642/gtap.tp04.

Abstract:
The methods described in the paper below have been automated as part of Release 8.0 of GEMPACK. This new version of GEMPACK (which is being beta tested by several modellers now and will be officially released later in 2002) makes it very easy to implement quotas (including import/export quotas and tariff rate quotas). This means that many of the implementation details in the technical paper below are no longer required. To implement quotas etc in GEMPACK, please follow the methodology documented in chapter 16 of GEMPACK User documentation GPD-3, which you can find at http://www.copsmodels.com/gpdoc.htm. If unsure, please contact support@gempack.com.au. 1996, September. This document describes how explicit import and export quotas can be implemented and solved in the GTAP CGE trade model. The techniques described here apply equally well to other general and partial equilibrium models implemented and solved using the GEMPACK software. They also generalise to procedures for handling other inequalities in models solved via GEMPACK (even though GEMPACK does not allow explicit inequalities in the algebraic representation of models). In this document we review some recent applications of GTAP in which explicit import and export quotas have been modelled, and discuss how important it was for these applications to have explicit treatment of quotas. Accompanying this document are various computer files containing the ingredients of examples that readers can carry out for themselves while reading this paper. These files can also be used as a starting point for those who wish to explicitly model quotas in their own models.

Abstract:
In 1997, the Mexican government designed the conditional cash transfer program Progresa, which became the worldwide model of a new approach to social programs, simultaneously targeting human capital accumulation and poverty reduction. A large literature has documented the short and medium-term impacts of the Mexican program and its successors in other countries. Using Progresas experimental evaluation design originally rolled out in 1997-2000, and a tracking survey conducted 20 years later, this paper studies the differential long-term impacts of exposure to Progresa. We focus on two cohorts of children: i) those that during the period of differential exposure were in-utero or in the first years of life, and ii) those who during the period of differential exposure were transitioning from primary to secondary school. Results for the early childhood cohort, 18-20-year-old at endline, shows that differential exposure to Progresa during the early years led to positive impacts on educational attainment and labor income expectations. This constitutes unique long-term evidence on the returns of an at-scale intervention on investments in human capital during the first 1000 days of life. Results for the school cohort - in their early 30s at endline - show that the short-term impacts of differential exposure to Progresa on schooling were sustained in the long-run and manifested themselves in larger labor incomes, more geographical mobility including through international migration, and later family formation.

Abstract:
We show how you can carry out systematic sensitivity analysis (SSA) with respect to parameters and/or shocks, which vary according to a specified covariance matrix. You can use the existing SSA tools in RunGTAP or RunGEM to do this if your model is implemented in GEMPACK. Those SSA tools assume that all parameters or shocks are varying independently (i.e., the distributions of all parameters or shocks are uncorrelated) or together (i.e., are completely correlated). The techniques in this paper remove those restrictions. However, users need to make small modifications to the TAB file for the model. Different modifications are needed for different SSA scenarios. Further, the standard SSA procedure built into RunGTAP and RunGEM allows you to compute the sensitivity of model results either with respect to variations in parameter values or with respect to variations in shock values, but you cannot vary both parameters and shocks at the same time. Our discussion concentrates on the parameter case. However, we later show how shock variation may be modelled as a type of parameter variation. This opens the door to simultaneous variation of shocks and parameters. We include worked examples of the techniques described, based on the standard GTAP Model.

The attempts to create an adequate model of socio-economic critical events, which, as it has been historically proven, are almost permanent, were, are and will always be made. Actually, it is a supertask, impossible to solve. However, the potentially useful solutions, local in time or other socio-economic logistic coordinates, are possible. In fact, they have to be the object of interest for a real and effective economic science. Econophysics is a young interdisciplinary scientific field, which developed and acquired its name at the end of the last century. Quantum econophysics, a direction distinguished by the use of mathematical apparatus of quantum mechanics as well as its fundamental conceptual ideas and relativistic aspects, developed within its boundaries just a couple of years later, in the first decade of the 21-st century.

Abstract:
Recently a simple analytic canopy bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF) model based on the spectral invariants theory was presented. The model takes into account that the recollision probability in the forest canopy is different for the first scattering than the later ones. Here this model is extended to include the forest floor contribution to the total forest BRF. The effect of the understory vegetation on the total forest BRF as well as on the simple ratio (SR) and the normalized difference (NDVI) vegetation indices is demonstrated for typical cases of boreal forest. The relative contribution of the forest floor to the total BRF was up to 69 % in the red wavelength range and up to 54 % in the NIR wavelength range. Values of SR and NDVI for the forest and the canopy differed within 10 % and 30 % in red and within 1 % and 10 % in the NIR wavelength range. The relative variation of the BRF with the azimuth and view zenith angles was not very sensitive to the forest floor vegetation. Hence, linear correlation of the modelled total BRF and the Ross-thick kernel was strong for dense forests (R2 &gt; 0.9). The agreement between modelled BRF and satellite-based reflectance values was good when measured LAI, clumping index and leaf single scattering albedo values for a boreal forest were used as input to the model.
