Abstract:
The growth and development of the skeleton during childhood and adolescence is an important determinant of the development of osteoporosis in later life. Therefore healthy behaviours adopted in early life are crucial in the promotion of bone health in adulthood. In the last decades, the available technology to monitor bone growth parameters has become more accurate and cheaper, improving the quality of longitudinal studies undertaken over the last few years. In childhood, the engagement in daily physical activities has a relevant impact on bone formation, mainly if weight-bearing activities are incorporated into it. The physical exercise-related osteogenic effects improve the bone health of boys and girls in different maturational stages. Moreover, the practice of organized sport incorporates osteogenic aspects, while well-structured physical education classes also seem relevant to improving bone health.

Abstract:
Late Dorset culture represents the final manifestation of the long-lived Paleoeskimo tradition in the eastern Arctic. Late Dorset occupied an enormous region from Victoria Island to Northern Labrador, and resettled the High Arctic, bringing them to Ellesmere Island and northwest Greenland. Alongside these expansions, long-distance exchange networks were further developed and intensified, perhaps bound together by the aggregation sites located at places with a particular high concentration of seasonally available subsistence resources. Late Dorset aggregation sites are particular visible due to their rows of stone-built hearths and/or “longhouses.” Late Dorset cosmology is visible in several aspects of architecture, as well as through analysis of the more than 1,200 miniature carvings of animals and humans that are known from the period.

Abstract:
This chapter presents the complex and diverse nature of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on a global scale, as well as a global epidemiology of HIV. The hardest-hit region of the world is sub-Saharan Africa, where heterosexual transmission dominates. Here the overall rate of new HIV infections has decreased in 25 countries by 50% between 2001 and 2011, coupled with scale-up of antiretroviral therapy and prevention of mother-to-child transmission. The Asia-Pacific region has the second highest burden of HIV in the world and, despite a decline in the annual number of new infections, is also seeing increasing HIV prevalence in high-risk groups. In Europe there is a clear division between the epidemics in eastern and western countries. Although antiretroviral therapy has led to great advances in health in this region, late identification of illness and barriers to care for stigmatized populations are a ubiquitous problem in the European Union. In the United States, despite reasonably good access to care, the incidence of HIV has not declined significantly since the advent of effective treatment. Substantial efforts and new strategies in the United States and the Americas have been developed to meet the goals of prevention and care engagement. The chapter also identifies the work needed to address the nuanced challenges to HIV prevention and treatment in different subpopulations across the world.

Abstract:
There is increasing recognition of the importance of both nutrition and environmental exposures in pregnancy as prenatal events are increasingly thought to have a significant impact on the emergence of later disease, as well as on many crucial aspects of child development. This chapter provides an overview of the evidence for the importance of nutrition and environmental exposures both preconceptually and in pregnancy on the long-term health and development of the child, and provides some recommendations for action points by health professionals.

Woods, Bob, and Gill Windle. The effect of ageing on personality. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199644957.003.0052.

Full text
Abstract:
Ageing and personality interact. Whilst experiences that may be associated with age, including changes in roles and social networks, losses and health challenges, may require adaptation of aspects of personality, personality across the life-span fundamentally influences how ageing is experienced. There are indications that extraversion, conscientiousness and openness show reduced levels in later life, but people’s rank order on personality traits remains stable. Development continues into later life, but builds on earlier experiences and ways of coping. Personality resources such as self-esteem, perceived control, self-efficacy and resilience shape the person’s response to adversity in later life, enabling older people to maintain high levels of well-being, despite the challenges. Dementia, the ultimate challenge, is accompanied by personality change, with raised neuroticism and lowered conscientiousness both predicting its onset and accompanying its course. Pre-morbid personality does also appear to have some influence on behavioural problems experienced.
