This thesis is concerned with how the myths of Prometheus came to function within ekphrastic contexts from Latin literature to Renaissance Italian art. Prometheus had many guises: the trickster that stole fire and triggered the end of the Golden Age, the keeper of a secret, the sculptor of man. Previous scholarship has tended to ignore, in particular, Prometheus’ connection to the Golden Age. After drawing fresh attention to the earliest sources in which this connection was explored, I illustrate how a development in writers’ characterisation of the god helped give rise to the idea of Promethe

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This work is aimed at reconstructing a history of Tibullus’s presence in modern and contemporary Italian culture, especially focusing on three aspects: publishing, textbooks publishing and literary imitation. The analysis of the most important Tibullian editions circulating in Italy allows to identify different periods of development of Tibullus’s presence in fifteenth to twentieth century publishing. As far as teaching is concerned, I have considered not only teaching books, but also school programmes, evidence and moral judgments about Tibullus and his presence among readings made by young p

Abstract:
The thesis consists of detailed commentary on the first 201 lines of Catullus 64, together with an edited text and apparatus criticus. It represents about half a planned commentary on the whole poem, which will also include an introduction. The commentary begins by discussing the poem’s Argonautic opening, its use of allusion to negotiate generic relationships with epic and tragedy, and its exploration of narrative, pictorial and first-person ‘lyric’ modes. As the narrative jumps to Peleus’ wedding, the commentary examines the complicated moral signals about Roman luxury and the golden age sen

Abstract:
This thesis examines the hair imagery that runs through the works of Propertius, Tibullus, and Ovid. Comparative analysis of the elegists’ approaches to the motif, with particular emphasis on determining where and how each deviates from the cultural assumptions and literary tradition attached to each image, sheds light on the character and purposes of elegy as a genre, as well as on the individual aims and innovations of each poet. The Introduction provides some background on sociological approaches to the study of hair, and considers the reasons why hair imagery should have such a prominent p
