Abstract:
This essay blends the biographies of three Latinas — Luisa Capetillo, Luisa Moreno, and Viridiana Martínez — who combated social and economic injustice in the US South. By uniting the lives of these women, who lived during distinct eras and never physically met, this piece illustrates that neither the history nor the presence of Latinas/os is new to the region and that many of the challenges present-day activists face are similar to the injustices Latinas and Latinos fought in the early twentieth century. It argues that to fully understand the region, including its complicated histories of race, gender, and politics, scholars must join the narratives of Latinas/os who immigrated to southern states during earlier eras with the stories of recent arrivals.

Abstract:
“A Legacy of Exclusion” briefly traces the historical migration of Latinas/os to the US South, countering the myth that the migration of Latinas/os to the region is new. Additionally, the piece argues that the exclusion Latinas/os face in the region is a continuation of racist policies and unequal power dynamics in the South that link Latina/o presence to a longer historical past and legacy. Through an examination of Alabama’s anti-immigration legislation, HB 56, I make two interrelated arguments. First, I argue that although there is nothing new about Latina/o migration to the region, what is new is the geopolitics of immigration — specifically, the proliferation of immigration enforcement within the interior of the United States. Second, these kinds of racist exclusionary projects have historical precedent. The contemporary regulation of nonwhite bodies is part of a much longer legacy of social control in the United States. Moving forward, I urge scholars of Latina/o studies and related fields whose focus is on the US South to engage with the history of settler colonialism, the displacement of native peoples, and the African American history of this region as a way to make important historical connections among and across racialized and otherized groups.

Abstract:
Abstract Older Latinas/os face significant difficulties in accessing quality depression treatment due to cultural and language barriers. In our study, Programa Esperanza (a randomized behavioral trial), we conducted after-treatment, in-depth interviews with two groups: 21 low-income Latinas/os (55+) receiving psychosocial depression care (Problem Solving Treatment, and Psychoeducation) in a health care setting, and 22 staff (interventionists, supervisors) participating in study implementation. Speaking the same language was highlighted by both groups as an overarching factor in effective depression care, although matching providers and patients by country of origin was considered less a priority than a shared language. The mechanisms by which language serves as a facilitator of effective care were highlighted: fomenting rapport; facilitating the expression of feelings; shortening initial relationship-building; understanding nuanced words and linguistic expressions; etc. Similarly, we found that shared culture included themes around intervention uptake, decreased stigma, increased advocacy, enhanced identification of coping strategies, etc. Unlike patients, providers were more likely to speak in diverse narratives of “them,” and “us.” Given that depression is still a stigmatizing disorder in our society, asking for help and receiving quality care remain significant challenges for older persons in general, and older underrepresented minorities, in particular. Our work signals the importance of differentiating language from culture in intervention development for older, primarily Spanish-speaking Latinas/os with high medical comorbidity.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The story of Latinas/os in higher education in the United States is often one of exclusion and erasure. In this essay, Arelis Hernandez argues that, from grade school to college, there is rarely an occasion for Latinas/os to learn their history and to produce scholarship based on their communities. Instead, they are pressured to subscribe to a homogenizing paradigm of history that stresses assimilation and a negation of their particular stories. The author describes the movement initiated at the University of Maryland at College Park in the spring of 2008 for the institutionalization of a U.S. Latina/o studies minor. After the administration refused to recognize the legitimacy of Latina/o studies, students used insights from historical efforts to fight for equity to leverage the creation of a Latina/o studies program. A student leader of this movement, Hernandez examines the collaboration among faculty, staff, and allies to transform their campus. In the process, she explores her own transformation.

AbstractThis article focuses on the work and efforts put forth by the University of Houston’s Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage program (Recovery) to create the first digital humanities center for US Latina/o Research: #usLdh. Recovery is a program to locate, preserve, and make available the written legacy of Latinas/os in the United States since colonial times until 1960. Through 27 years of successful work Recovery has not only been able to inscribe the excluded history of Latinas/os, but also has created an inclusive and vast digital repository that facilitates scholarship in this area of studies. This article focuses on the importance of recovery work in the writing, teaching, and understanding of history and considers how local personal archives have helped to fill in the gaps of mainstream history. We will detail the goals and challenges of this mission, as well as the importance of educating the community in digital methods that preserve and disseminate minority voices.

Abstract:
In the 1960s, topless entertainment became legal in San Francisco, although cross-dressing continued to be criminalized. This article documents queer Latina/x visual and performance cultures of San Francisco’s strip club industry during this critical moment. It employs visual and performance analyses that draw from ethnographic interviews and archival research about three Latinas who performed as exotic dancers during this period, two of whom were out transsexuals: Roxanne Lorraine Alegria, Vicki Starr, and Lola Raquel. Engaging Marcia Ochoa’s notion of “spectacular femininities” and Juana María Rodríguez’s theory of “queer gesture,” the article maps out a queer Latina/x herstoriography about the early days of topless entertainment in San Francisco. It demonstrates how the transgressive practices of these Latina performers enrich genealogies of queer and Latina/x performance and visual cultures since the 1960s. It thus contributes to the expansion and intersection of the fields of performance studies, Latina/x studies, and feminist, gender, and sexuality studies. These fields and their intertwinings offer critical tools to resist the sexism, homophobia, racism, transphobia, and whorephobia that pervade every level of society, as well as the cultural amnesia to which San Francisco has been increasingly prone due to its incessant gentrification and growing technocracy since the early 2010s.

Abstract:

Abstract:
While men and women make up a similar number of COVID-19 cases, and are equally likely to know someone who has become ill due to the virus, the gendered and systemic implications of immigration during public health emergencies among minority groups in the United States are empirically underexplored. Using the SOMOS COVID-19 Crisis National Latino Survey, we conduct a series of intersectional analyses to understand the extent to which personal experiences with COVID-19, gendered structural factors, and spillover effects of US immigration policies impact the mental health of US Latina/os during a public health emergency. The results show that among Latinas, knowing an undocumented immigrant and someone ill with COVID-19 increases the probability of reporting worse mental outcomes by 52 percent. Furthermore, being a woman increases the probability of reporting the highest level of mental health problems by 30 percent among Hispanic people who know someone with COVID-19 and an undocumented immigrant. These findings indicate that the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak among US Latinas and Latinos are entrenched in gendered and systemic inequalities.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examined how Latina/o undergraduate students’ graduate and professional degree aspirations change during college. Using longitudinal data from the Cooperative Institutional Research Program, a multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine factors associated with aspiring to earn a degree beyond a baccalaureate. Findings show that many students change their initial aspirations and several college experiences, such as higher college GPA and faculty interactions, are associated with Latinas/os’ graduate and professional degree aspirations.
