Empirical research has yet to adequately address the substantive implications of Latino descriptive representation in legislative activities like bill sponsorship, or to explore whether party status impacts the relationship between descriptive and substantive representation. I examine an original dataset of bills sponsored during the 109th and 110th congresses to assess the effect of descriptive representation on the sponsorship of Latino interest bills. Results illustrate that Latino representatives sponsored more Latino interest bills than their non-Latino colleagues during both congresses.

Late classical and early medieval grammatical discourse presents not a monolithic view of Latin but various accounts of pronunciation, spelling, and semantics. This study investigates Spanish light verb constructions (LVCs), or construcciones con verbo soporte, such as dar respuesta and tomar en cuenta in a seven-million-word corpus of contemporary newspaper texts from seven Latin American countries. I provide a detailed discussion of the procedure of compiling the corpus to ensure a balanced representation of newspaper registers. This is followed by a description of how the targeted verbs, dar, poner, tener and tomar, were identified and tagged using corpus analysis software. The results of the corpus search are analysed in terms of frequency, and s

With the rapid growth of available 3D models on the Internet, how to retrieve 3D models based on hand-drawn sketch retrieval are becoming increasingly important. This article proposes a new sketch-based 3D model retrieval approach. This approach is different from current methods that make use of low-level visual features to capture the search intention of users. The proposed method uses two kinds of semantic attributes, including pre-defined attributes and latent attributes. Specifically, pre-defined attributes are defined manually which can provide prior knowledge about different sketch categ

This paper presents the results of research on representations of computers and information technology in the three daily Italian newspapers ( La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, La Repubblica, and II Corriere della Sera), between 1976 and 1984. The titles of 2816 articles were analysed by categorial content analysis. The aim of the research is the exploration of structural latent dimensions and of differential aspects of representations of computers in terms of `central nuclei' with respect to the three newspapers and to the nine years. To estimate the prevalence of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug consumption (through the self-report) in adult Latin-American immigrants of Seville, a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in a representative sample of 190 immigrants. The results showed that 61.4% of the participants had consumed alcohol in previous month before data collection, although 13.2% of them were at risk of alcoholism. Moreover, 30.0% were smokers. In addition, 5.3% of the interviewed people had consumed illicit psychoactive substances in the previous six months (Marihuana: 3.7%, hashish: 1.1% and cocaine

In order to design and implement public policies in the context of rural development, information tends to be gathered about family farming in different Latin American countries. In contrast, scarce attention has been given to the description of rural extensionists, who are the ones supporting family farming in the field. A cross-sectional investigation was conducted between 2010 and 2012 including surveys to rural extensions working in 10 different Latin American countries, this allowing for a preliminary description of the socio-demographic profile of the respondents. Spatiotemporal connectionist networks (STCNs) comprise an important class of neural models that can deal with patterns distributed in both time and space. In this article, we widen the application domain of the taxonomy for supervised STCNs recently proposed by Kremer (2001) to the unsupervised case. This is possible through a reinterpretation of the state vector as a vector of latent (hidden) variables, as proposed by Meinicke (2000). The goal of this generalized taxonomy is then to provide a nonlinear generative framework for describing unsupervised spatiotemporal networks, making it easier

The election of Michelle Bachelet as president of Chile in January 2006 was heralded in the world press as an advancement of women's rights in Chile. Not only did Bachelet's election increase women's representation at the highest levels, but it also raised expectations that Chile would adopt more women-friendly policies as well. Although focused on the years between the democratic transition and the election of Bachelet, Liesl Haas's Feminist Policymaking in Chile speaks volumes to the questions of how and why such representation makes a difference.
