Abstract:
In this thesis we are concerned with arithmetic in a certain partially ordered, commutative semigroup D. The first chapter investigates the class of countable Boolean algebras from which this semigroup arises. The elements of D correspond to the isomorphism classes of the Boolean algebras under consideration. In Chapter 2 we begin the study of the semigroup structure of D. D is axiomatically described by three groups of axioms. It is proved that these axioms are categorical. The ordering of D is used to investigate the multiplication. The set of T of torsion elements of D (elements with only f

Abstract:

Abstract:
The idea of keychains, an (n+1)-tuple of non-increasing real numbers in the unit interval always including 1, naturally arises in study of finite fuzzy set theory. They are a useful concept in modeling ideas of uncertainty especially those that arise in Economics, Social Sciences, Statistics and other subjects. In this thesis we define and study some basic properties of keychains with reference to Partially Ordered Sets, Lattices, Chains and Finite Fuzzy Sets. We then examine the role of keychains and their lattice diagrams in representing uncertainties that arise in such problems as in prefer

Abstract:
The O'Nan-Scott Theorem classifies finite primitive permutation groups into one of five isomorphism classes. This theorem is very useful for answering questions about finite permutation groups since four out of the five isomorphism classes are well understood. The proof of this theorem currently relies upon the classification of the finite simple groups, as it requires a consequence of this classification, the Schreier Conjecture. After reviewing some needed group theoretic concepts, I give a detailed proof of the O'Nan-Scott Theorem. I then examine how the techniques of this proof have been
