Abstract:
Michail Bletsas, Director of Computing at the MIT Media Lab and Director of the Network Computing Systems Group at MIT, is convinced that the 21st century will see the emergence of biological intelligence. He starts the dialogue with an explanation of why the Internet and its huge computational system, - the most complex human-built system -, is forcing us to learn to engage with systems that are becoming even more complicated, with varying levels of complexity. He describes later the arrival of the finely granular Internet, which in consequence led to the concept of connectivity everywhere. Later he outlines the Internet of Things’ capabilities that he and his team have deployed inside the new MIT Media Lab building. Michael then goes on to argue why we have to separate issues of business from scientific arguments and prediction—the important thing in business is not only what’s going to happen, but when it will happen. Michael also relates why the best type of innovation is bottom up, before going on to explain how not only innovation, but also evolution, is gradually improving things.

At this workshop, the transdisciplinary research group H.A.U.S. presented a new experimental research method (TPT) for the first time. Classic methods like “Living Lab” and “Wizard of Oz” are widely used and well established in social robotics research, but they imply explicit limits and raise methodological concerns. The epistemology of TPT’s performances draws on concepts related to Hans-Jörg Rheinberger’s “epistemic thing” and Michel Serres’ “quasi-object”. These theoretical underpinnings are discussed, alongside limitations of TPT and benefits of this approach compared to classic methods.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 is the first of two in part 1 of the book, “Intimacy.” A premise of this chapter is that intimate human-animal encounters are an inescapable, everyday aspect of lab work and that this intimacy engenders affective responses. Whereas regulatory apparati and associated research practices necessitate that animals be quantified in a host of ways (most evident in numbering and logging systems), still other practices abound that evidence how lab personnel understand animals as more than mere data points or objects of research. The underlying “sentimental structures” (a phrase long used in anthropology to reference kindredness) offer rich evidence of an affective, moral registry at work in labs. Further, different species engender different sorts of responses among lab professionals, a reality I describe as species preference, where iconic species of science (e.g., lab rats and mice, macaques) evidence this. The more specifically charismatic qualities of chimpanzees and dogs are especially powerful in this way, where affective responses can vary not only from one individual lab worker to another, but also within or across a lab’s labor hierarchy, consisting of researchers, animal technicians (also known as “caretakers”), and veterinarians.

Abstract:
This chapter takes as its subject Maggie Gee’s novel Virginia Woolf in Manhattan (2014), which imagines what might transpire if Woolf were to be resurrected in twenty-first-century New York. She is conjured by the fictitious novelist Angela Lamb, who is visiting the Berg Collection in preparation for a keynote address at an international Woolf conference. As a contemporary novelist who recalls her subject to life, lends her clothing and helps her to sign her name, Angela is symbolic of the real-life novelists who recreated Woolf in their own image and reinterpreted her works in line with their respective versions. The chapter thus contends that Gee’s recent manifestation of Woolf-inspired biofiction may be read successfully as an extended metaphor for the twenty-year-old subgenre. This originated with Sigrid Nunez (1998) and Michael Cunningham (1998) and extends to recent work by Priya Parmar (2014) and Norah Vincent (2015). The chapter first examines issues of content, focusing on Gee’s presentation of Woolf’s suicide and sexuality. The discussion is then expanded to think critically about Woolf-inspired biofiction as a subgenre, particularly the ethical issues attendant on its invasion of the subject’s privacy.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter reviews what the previous chapters have revealed about cultural primatology. It compares the knowledge cultures of Christophe Boesch's field station, Michael Tomasello's laboratory, Tetsuro Matsuzawa's laboratory, and Matsuzawa's field station with each other to map a space of no-longer-available possibilities. Boesch's fieldwork on wild chimpanzees and Tomasello's laboratory experiments on captive chimpanzees contradicted each other regarding the capacity of Pan troglodytes for culture and cooperation. Boesch and Tomasello could not agree because the fieldworker doubted the ecological validity of the experimenter's findings, while the experimenter denied that field observations could provide any insights into what caused the observed behaviors, leaving chimpanzee ethnographers unable to rule out alternative explanations of supposedly cultural behaviors. Meanwhile, Matsuzawa's laboratory research at the Kyoto University Primate Research Institute and his field research in Bossou presented an interesting contrast to the disagreements between the two because he integrated lab and field in his own work. He studied the social learning of nut cracking through field observation, field experiment, participation observation, and controlled laboratory experiment — and conceived of his synthesis of all these approaches as an expression of Japanese holism.

Professor Liebig of Giessen University is looking back with pride on his career in organic chemistry and his keen young team of researchers in their lab ‘almost exclusively devoted to the improvement of organic analysis . . . The only complaints were those of the attendant who in the evenings, when he had to clean, could not get the workers to leave the laboratory.’ All quite typical—except that he is describing a laboratory he created in 1826. It was the first research laboratory based in a university. There were a few other laboratories but they were usually sponsored by learned societies (you can still see Michael Faraday’s laboratory at the Royal Institution) and were nothing to do with universities. Professor Liebig knew the significance of what he was doing: ‘there began at the small university an activity such as the world had not yet seen’. It was the birth of one of the most important institutions of the modern world—the research-based university systematically creating new knowledge—and it was conceived in Germany, as we saw in Chapter One. Wilhelm von Humboldt wrote a short policy paper which proved to be one of the seminal documents in the emergence of the modern university, proposing that the university should become a centre of research. Underneath the idealist Hegelian prose he wrestles with issues which are still live today. He argues that research based in the university is enhanced by teaching, compared with the alternative model of research in a separate academy: . . . If one declares the university as destined only for the teaching and dissemination of science, but the academy to its expansion, one clearly does the former an injustice. Surely, the sciences have been just as much—and in Germany more so—expanded by university professors as by the academy members, and these men have arrived at their advances in their field precisely through their teaching. For the free oral lecture before listeners, among whom there is always a significant number of minds that think along for themselves, surely spurs on the person who has become used to this kind of study as much as the solitary leisure of the writer’s life or the loose association of an academic fellowship. . . .

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Obesity are linked to more deaths worldwide. In obesity, there will be dysregulation of growth signals such as tumorigenesis, angiogenesis, as well as chronic minimalist inflammation that lasts a long time. The mechanism by which 2-NP causes toxicity is poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the effect of induction of 2-Nitropropane in obesity mice on antioxidant status seen from MDA, and GSH enzyme specific activity. Subjects and Method: This was a randomized controlled trial with posttest-only control group design conducted at Biochemstry Laboratory, with labor

Tendon and ligament injuries present a considerable socioeconomic impact as close to 50% of the 32 million musculoskeletal injuries in the US per year include these structures [1]. The inadequate healing in these tissues requires novel treatment modalities. Improving tendon tissue engineering dictates that we better understand the process of natural adult tendon healing. Type-I (Col1) and Type-II (Col2) collagens are important structural proteins in tendon as Col1 is the main collagen type found in the tendon midsubstance while Col2 is expressed at the insertion into bone during development, g

The development of novel methods for the isolation of primary stem and progenitor cells is important for the treatment of blood cancers, tissue engineering, and basic research in the biomedical sciences. Our lab has previously shown that microtubes coated with P-selectin protein can be used to capture and enrich hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells from a mixture of cells perfused through the tube at physiologically-relevant shear stresses[1][2], and that using a surface coating of colloidal silica nanoparticles (12 nm diameter, 30% by weight SiO2) increased cell capture and decreased rolli

Abstract:
The tools and techniques available for systems neuroscientists for neural recording and stimulation during behavior have become plentiful in the last decade. The tools for implementing these techniques in vivo, however, have not advanced respectively. The use of these techniques requires the removal of sections of skull tissue without damaging the underlying tissue, which is a very delicate procedure requiring significant training. Automating a part of the tissue removal processes would potentially enable more precise procedures to be performed, and it could democratize these procedres for wid
