Full textRiparian and littoral vegetation of eastern Canada lakes has been severely affected by log drive and today, several dams still remain. However, their present effects on the vegetation and those that could be caused by their removal are poorly documented. This study aimed to: i) measure changes in the structure and composition of the riparian and littoral vegetation related to the elevation to the water level, ii) evaluate the time needed for the vegetation to return to a natural reference state following the removal of dams and iii) determine the factors governing vegetation responses to changes in water levels. The vegetation structure and composition following the restoration of a dam was compared on two lakes, an unregulated control lake and a dammed lake composed of four gradually affected basins. Following a dam removal, the vegetation was examined on four lakes, including a control. The major factors that influenced riparian and littoral vegetation in the presence of a dam were the current elevation to the water level of the lake and the extent of the dam influence. Following dam removal, the main influencing factors were the elevation from shore and the number of years since the dam removal. In the presence of a dam, riparian vegetation was characterized by the transformation of the upland riparian rainforest in a humid forest which shared characteristics with the control. From 1 m of elevation, vegetation was characterized by a dry forest. In the first years following dam removal, littoral vegetation was composed of mixed submerged vegetation with low density and high species diversity near the shore. The vegetation structure and composition were similar to the control after 16 years. There was no evidence that the plant communities diverged from their natural successional trajectory under the influence of new environmental conditions.

Full textConservation and preservation are concepts that historically involve different ideological relationships with nature. The way in which these concepts evolved over time and influenced the management of one of the first parks in Quebec, the parc des Laurentides (1895), is at the heart of this study in historical geography. In 1981, most of the territory of the park was replaced by a réserve faunique (conservation) and two smaller national parks (preservation), which differ by their degree of tolerance of human intervention. This supposes that these two ideologies coexisted within the parc des Laurentides, despite its status as a “national park”. The parc des Laurentides was a government project with the objective of simplifying its space to better understand, control and enhance it, resulting in different spatial representations. Through the analysis of historical maps and annual reports produced by the various departments responsible for managing the park between 1895-1981, the objective of the study is to identify the main representations that the State had of the natural space of the park, and how they influenced its land use planning. With the passing of the Loi sur les parcs in 1977, the various representations identified could no longer coexist within the parc des Laurentides, as together they implied conservation and preservation measures. In a broader context, the historical geography of the Parc des Laurentides ties together two opposite movements of the nature-culture relationship in Quebec that spanned from the end of the 19th century to the 1970s: from the privatization of public forest lands through the establishment of private hunting and fishing clubs, to the democratization of wilderness that resulted in the establishment of the existing outdoor network that benefits a society in search of wilderness.
