Abstract:
This article revives the agency of Lavinia in Titus Andronicus through a blended ecocritical and complexivist approach. A ‘blue’ ecocritical lens identifies Lavinia’s alignment with aquatic imagery, and tracks the development of this imagery across four main phases in the play: human tears, a river, a flood, and a freeze. These phases broadly map onto different modes of ecological relations as the play explores alternative patterns of human–environmental interactions. Lavinia is reinterpreted as an active and independent complex ecosystem, and one capable of communicating through the same aquatic imagery which is utilised in the narrative to attempt to contain and commodify her. Titus’s aquatic discourse finds parallels in our own climate crises, in ongoing problematic associations between women and nature, and in our need to generate new models of agency and ecological relations.

Murphy, Caroline. "Lavinia Fontana : an artist and her society in late sixteenth century Bologna." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1996. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1349274/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the career of one of Europe's first truly successful female painters with the largest attributable oeuvre of any woman artist before the 18th century. It incorporates an analysis of the tastes and consumption patterns, lifestyles and mentalities of the patriciate clergy and scholars of Counter Reformation Bologna who were her patrons. The intent is to identify and categorise her patrons and to explore her artistic appeal to them and to explain the work opportunities created by Counter Reformation initiatives including church refurbishment and charity institutions. It breaks down into six chapters: the first concerns family background, how and why Fontana's painter father Prospero trained her as a painter, the circumstances surrounding her marriage and how it contributed to her career: The second is about her initial clientèle of scholars and intellectuals connected with the University at Bologna whose portraits she painted and the Europe-wide cult of collections of images of uomini famosi which helped to give her an international reputation. The three middle chapters deal with the group of Bolognese noblewomen who were undoubtedly Fontana's most significant and high spending patrons, for whom she painted altarpieces, portraits and private devotional works and to whom she became personally connected through godparentage (she had eleven children). One of these chapters looks at these patrons in general terms, the next concerns Laudomia Gozzadini, for whom Fontana painted an enormous family portrait that had very special significance and resonance in the lives of both patron and painter. The fifth chapter considers the work Fontana produced for wealthy widows in Bologna. By identifying some of the widows in question it has been possible to pursue their particular family circumstances to see what kind of widow sought to commemorate her state and what options for interpretation were offered within predicative literature. The sixth and final chapter looks at work intended for the youth of Bologna and pictures that involved children from the moment of conception until their late adolescence. The diversity of her patrons and their artistic needs demonstrates the expansion and success of Fontana's business.

Kenney, Patricia Drozd. "LaVilla, Florida, 1866-1887 :reconstruction dreams and the formation of a black community." UNF Digital Commons, 1990. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/699.

Full text
Abstract:
Several factors which influenced the formation of an urban black community following the Civil War are examined in this study. Prior to the war, LaVilla, a suburb of Jacksonville, Florida, was sparsely populated by wealthy white families. At war's end, freedmen seeking shelter and work took advantage of the inexpensive housing and proximity to employment LaVilla offered and, by 1870, became the majority population. The years 1866 through 1887 have been chosen for this study because they demarcate LaVilla's inception on the one hand and, on the other, its disappearance as an independent entity. Local, state, and federal records have been utilized to better understand the freedmen's decision on where to settle, finding work, securing a home, and political participation. Although an integrated community, the focus of this study is on the role of blacks in community formation. During the first twenty years of freedom, the blacks who lived in LaVilla came to organize their community along two separate and distinct paths: the social and the political. The social dimension was segregated and articulated through social networks created by family, kinship, and friendship anchored in and strengthened by the church, school, and voluntary associations. In the context of urban growth and development, these social networks would mitigate the harsh realities of poverty, unemployment, and inadequate housing. The political dimension was integrated and afforded black males power and influence concerning the civic decisions of their community. Following annexation to Jacksonville in 1887, LaVilla's blacks were removed from the political arena and disjoined from the decision-making process. As a result, the freedmen came to rely solely on the social dimension of their community.

Thiemann, Amy. "Embracing Internationalism: An Examination of Mario Lavista with an Analysis of Cinco Danzas Breves." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2017. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc984228/.

Full text
Abstract:
Mario Lavista (b.1943) is widely acknowledged as one of Mexico's foremost living composers. Having acquired his music education in his native Mexico and in Europe alike, he is similar to numerous other Latin composers who were building a career in the latter half of the twentieth century. During this time, composers were relying on international aspects of avant-garde techniques, and using nationalistic Latin rhythms and melodies less. Lavista embraced internationalism, and aimed to compose works devoid of identifiable elements of nationalism. This document argues that the absence of nationalistic elements in Lavista's music has affected his notoriety outside of Mexico. The role of nationalism is assessed through a brief examination of influential Mexican composers and educators prior to 1950, followed by a discussion of education and composition in the latter half of the twentieth century. These aspects are investigated with regard to Lavista's education and resulting compositional style. A theoretical analysis of Cinco Danzas Breves para quinteto de alientos (1994) serves as a representative example of Lavista's compositional style and influence. This document aims to highlight and increase exposure of Mexican composers outside of Latin America who do not compose nationalistic music.
