Abstract:
This article is a report of the author's doctoral research completed in 2007. The research was carried out among secondary school pupils in England aged 12–17. Its purpose was to find out what they understood spirituality to be. ‘Spirituality’ here does not mean religious spirituality or the ‘alternative’ or ‘countercultural’ spirituality which was the primary focus of this conference. Instead the author addresses the distinctive debate in England about the nature of that spirituality, or to use the exact term, ‘spiritual development’, which has to be promoted by law in English schools. This is referred to this as spirituality-in-education. Students’ rationales for selecting religious education are dependent on their understanding and experience of the subject and what they get out of it. Students regard content as more important in religious education than any other subject, but as a means to ends (developing beliefs, developing in one’s religion, understanding others) than as an end in itself. What is apparent here is that many students from different perspectives have found religious education to make a significant contribution to their spiritual development, but that contribution varies for each person.

Abstract:
If Place Spirituality is considered as an attachment experience to a geographic place or an “object,” for Muslims this concept can be explained by the sharia or Islamic law. However, in the highest level of experience as a Muslim, one may attach to God everywhere and at all times, without consideration of any place, time, or object. This experience can clearly be understood with the explanation of the three levels (spiritual path) for Muslims: (1) sharia or “conceptual knowledge,” (2) tariqa or “experiential knowledge,” and (3) ma’rifa or “divine spiritual experiences” or “spiritual consciousness”. At the first and second levels, one may have a Place Spirituality, while at the third level the understanding of and connection to God might be enhanced, and the experience to connect to God can be everywhere, all the time.

Wastesicoot, Jennie. "Tapwetamowin: Cree Spirituality and Law for Self-Governance." JCharlton Publishing Ltd, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/30319.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis explores the uniqueness of Cree spirituality and law, based in part on oral histories and on Euro-Canadian literal evidence, specifically the multi-volumes of the Jesuit Relations and the thousands of Hudson’s Bay Company manuscripts that re-enforce insights into this Aboriginal governing system. Taken together, the oral and literal primary evidences will define how spirituality and law pre-existed colonisation and are manifested within self-governing institutions currently pursued by First Nations. The purpose is to understand better Cree spirituality and law as captured in Cree self-government models. This Aboriginal legal history contains and studies a plan of action for future self-governance based on inherent Aboriginal legal traditions and jurisprudence.

Abstract:

This paper studied lawyers and spirituality and the potential benefits of offering spiritual guidance to lawyers, both personally and in connection with their law practices. This paper explored how spiritual guidance might be of particular service to lawyers (a) who identify as spiritual but not religious, and (b) who do not identify as spiritual or religious, but who have high aspirations for how the practice of law might best occur as a meaningful vocation for themselves as lawyers and as a valuable service to their clients and to society. The general questions intended to be explored in this paper were: (a) whether and how spirituality can be incorporated into the provision of legal services, (b) what transformations might be effected in the legal profession though attorneys cultivating spirituality into their lives, and (c) what role spiritual guidance might play in the process. The method used in this paper was qualitative; in particular, organic inquiry. Four practicing attorneys were interviewed. Participant attorneys completed a written questionnaire and were asked to respond to prepared questions in the individual interviews. A group process with all of the participant attorneys and the researcher occurred.

The results of this paper show that the participant attorneys have incorporated their unique sense of spirituality into their law practices. The results also indicate the perceived obstacles to the incorporation of spirituality into the practice of law and to the receipt of spiritual guidance. The results of this paper suggest that spiritual guidance might be a useful service to attorneys, both personally and professionally.

Liuzzo, Scorpo Antonella. "The idea of friendship in the literary, historical and legal works of Alfonso X of Castile (1252-1284)." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/71655.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project explores an area which had been touched only tangentially, being a comparative analysis of the idea and interpretations of friendship which emerge from the three vernacular collections attributed to the supervision of King Alfonso X of Castile (1252-1284): namely the Marian songs Cantigas de Santa María, the law code known as the Siete Partidas and the chronicle Estoria de España. These sources have been examined by adopting a thematic approach which has highlighted the existence of categories such as spiritual, religious and political friendships, as well as other forms of amicable relationships, including those between representatives of different religious, ethnic and social groups. Additionally, this study demonstrates that there was a conscious adoption of a specific lexicon of amicitia which contributed to reinforce either the opposition or the coincidence between friendship, companionship and counsellorship. Despite the undeniable inheritance of both classical eastern and western traditions, the works of the ‘Learned’ King present a peculiar idea of friendship which was deeply affected by contemporary historical contingencies and by the political and cultural projects of a sovereign who wanted to be regarded as a friend of his people, without denying, however, the unbridgeable gap which existed between different social groups. Interestingly, even if the Alfonsine works display a complicated range of relationships which envisage clear differences, they still outline a perfectly-balanced system within which the general and untouchable rules of friendship predominated, although in some cases certain variants were allowed in order to adapt such general requirements to contemporary social and political situations.
