Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Gender and Conflict brings together leading interdisciplinary scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to address a complex range of challenges, contexts, geographies, and issues that arise for women and men in the context of armed conflict. The Handbook addresses war and peace, humanitarian intervention, countering violence and extremism, the United Nations Women, Peace, and Security Agenda, sexual violence, criminal accountability, autonomous weapons, peacekeeping, refugee and internally displaced person (IDP) status, the political economy of war, the economics of conflict, as well as health and economic security. It begins with theoretical approaches to gender and conflict, drawing on the areas of international, peace and conflict, feminist, and masculinities studies. The Handbook explores how women and men’s pre-war societal, economic, and legal status relates to their conflict experiences, affecting the ways in which they are treated in the post-conflict transitional phase. In addition to examining these conflict and post-conflict experiences, the Handbook addresses the differing roles of multiple national and international actors, as well as the UN led Women, Peace, and Security Agenda. Contributions survey the regulatory framework and gendered dimensions of international humanitarian and international human rights law in situations of conflict and occupation as well as addressing, and critiquing, the gendered nature and content of international criminal law. The Handbook also includes grounded country case studies exploring different gendered experiences of conflict in various regions. As a whole, this Handbook seeks to critically examine the contemporary gender-based challenges that emerge in conflict and post-conflicts contexts.

Abstract:
The Play of Law in Modern British Theatre investigates the place and purpose of law in a range of modern dramatic settings and writings. Each chapter, which focusses on a particular area of law and the work of a particular playwright, illustrates the important role of theatre in articulating legal and political issues to a modern audience. The encompassing aspiration of The Play of Law in Modern British Theatre introduces the reader to a variety of genres in modern dramatic writing. From the ‘state of the nation’ plays of the 1980s and 1990s, to ‘verbatim’ and modern historical drama, to the calculated violence of ‘in-yer-face’, and associated expressions of radical and feminist theatre. Amongst those playwrights whose work is considered are David Hare, Richard Norton-Taylor, Caryl Churchill, Howard Brenton, Mike Bartlett, Sarah Kane, Bryony Lavery and Evan Placey. Along the way the reader is introduced to an equally wide range of areas of political and legal debate; from constitutional reform, to the present state of international law, to a variety of familiar controversies in associated areas of law, society, and gender.

Part II: Enterprise and Capital considers globalization; spectacle; mega-events; Olympism; corruption; impacts on cities, communities, and the environment; and the press of leadership cultures, economic imperatives, and marketing. Part III: Participation and Cultures considers questions of health and well-being, violence, the medicalization of injury, influences of science and technology, substance use and abuse, the roles of coaching and emotion, challenges of child maltreatment, climates for scandal and athlete activism, and questions on animals in sporting competition. Part IV: Lifespan and Careers considers child socialization, youth and elite athlete development, the roles of sport in education and social mobility, migratory sport labor practices, arcs defining athletic careers, aging and retirement, and emergent lifestyle sport cultures. Part V: Inclusion and Exclusion considers sport’s role in social inclusion and exclusion and in development and discrimination and features treatments of race and ethnicity; indigenous experiences; the intersection of bodily ideals, obesity, and disability; and the gendered impacts on masculinities, femininities, and nonbinary experience.
