Abstract:
Abstract The first part of the article deals with the ablaut pattern(s) that may be reconstructed on the basis of Slavic comparatives. It is claimed that three separate morphological categories (including comparatives) support the interpretation of the vowel o in some suppletive roots as derived from the ∅-grade, possibly within the amphikinetic pattern; thus a new sound law is suggested for Proto-Slavic. In the second part, it is illustrated how the remodeling of the Proto-Slavic comparative formative supports the interpretation of Proto-Indo-European comparatives as quasi-primary derivatives of change-of-state verbs; a parallel phenomenon is also described for Kashubian. Finally, accentual matters are briefly referred to. The paper includes some remarks on the vestiges of the Caland system in Slavic, too.

Abstract:
Article is based on the study of documentary materials. Although the terminology is inseparable from content the article discusses mainly terminological side of the phenomena. Using comparative, linguistic methods, content analysis, the author examines terminology used in British, French, German, some other constitutions, including the сonstitutions in Slavic languages, other legal acts, international documents to refer to the concepts of «state of law» and «rule of law» (sometimes also used the term «rule of law»), show- ing the differences in the origin, content and meaning of these phrases in Russian, some other Slavic languages, and other languages in Western Europe. The article listed the shortcomings of some terms, limit the content of the rule of law concept by higher legal force of the Constitution, the constitutionality, legality or the special role of the law in the system of sources of law. The author examines the definitions of «rule of law», which given some credible international organizations offers clarification of these definitions.

Abstract:
Vowels are longer before voiced than voiceless obstruents in many languages. Work on how this effect interacts with aspiration has been limited. This study presents data from Hindi and Telugu on vowel duration and other acoustic characteristics as influenced by following consonants. Hindi vowels were significantly longer before voiced stops than voiceless stops, with no significant effect of aspiration. Telugu vowels were only slightly longer before voiced than voiceless stops; more crucially, they were shorter before aspirated stops than unaspirated stops. The Telugu results provide a parallel demonstrating the phonetic plausibility of the sound change proposed in Winter’s Law, with vowel lengthening before voiced unaspirated stops but not before voiced aspirated stops in Proto-Balto-Slavic. While the exact processes causing the voicing and aspiration effects remain unclear, this data contributes to evaluating the phenomenon. Phonetic differences between in Hindi and Telugu may also suggest characteristics of how the Proto-Balto-Slavic stop contrasts were realized.

Goede, Hendrik. "The exhortations to slave-owners in the New Testament : a philological study / Hendrik Goede." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/8401.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to construct the legal rights and duties of slave-owners in the first century AD as context for the exhortations in the New Testament directed at slave-owners. The central theoretical argument has been that the legal context of the first readers is essential for a valid interpretation of these exhortations, and that taking into account this legal context makes a valid interpretation possible. The study applies philological and comparative methods as well as analysis, interpretation and synthesis of the collected material. Chapter 1 provides an outline of the study. Chapter 2 first defines a search filter to delimit the vast collection of material on slavery in antiquity, and then describes ancient slavery as general context to the texts and the New Testament exhortations analysed in subsequent chapters. In chapter 3 the legal context has been constructed by way of analysis of primary texts from Greek, Roman, and Jewish law. Chapter 4 deals with primary texts on the philosophical underpinnings of slavery in the three worlds under investigation. In chapter 5 Greek, Roman, and Jewish primary texts dealing with the conduct of slave-owners in respect of their slaves have been analysed. In chapter 6 the New Testament exhortations to slave-owners have been analysed utilising the contexts constructed in the preceeding chapters. Chapter 7 summarises the findings and conclusions of the study. The study has concluded the New Testament writers’ acceptance of the legal and social reality of slavery in the first century AD. Their writings, however, contain unique features with a direct bearing on the rights and duties of slave-owners namely their persistent placement of the slave-owner – slave relationship in the context of the believing slave-owner and/or slave’s relationship with Jesus Christ. Within this framework, the study points towards diverging viewpoints within the New Testament on a continuum between social separation and acculturation.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 164-177.
This dissertation is primarily concerned with the functioning of the law in the Cape Colony in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as it pertained to slaves and masters (and to a lesser extent Khoi servants). It examines the operation of the law in one particular rural district, namely, Stellenbosch in the years c.1760-1820. The chief primary sources include criminal -- and on a smaller scale civil -- records of the local and central courts of the colony. Travellers' accounts have also been utilised. The study of one particular rural district reveals the extent to which the law was intricately woven into the fabric of the settler 'community'. Despite differentials of wealth, the settlers in Stellenbosch district were essentially part of a community of slaveholders. The contours of the settler community fundamentally influenced every step of the legal process. Members of the settler community were in a situation of face-to-face interaction. This meant that often, in conflicts between settlers, recourse to the law was seen as a last resort and mo.re emphasis was placed on the maintenance of personal social relationships. However, this community, of which a landed elite stood in the forefront, had discordant features and domination of the poor by the rich did not go without any struggle. The features of the settler community also fundamentally influenced the position of slaves in the law. Access to the courts for the slaves for complaints against their masters was very significantly determined by conflicts which existed amongst slaveholders. In court the extent of solidarity amongst members of the community could ultimately determine the chances of success for slaves. Another way in which concerns of community influenced the legal process was by the importance which was attached to the reputations of individual slaveowners. Often such concerns overrode strictly legal ones. Even in determining the severity of sentences in criminal cases reputations of individuals were of primary importance. The VOC not only served to bolster the authority of slaveowners but also to keep the wider society in control. Therefore, it could not allow slaveholder tyranny over their labourers to go unchecked. Moreover, the legal system had to be more than simply an instrument in the hands of the master class. At the local level, the VOC could be seen to be acting in the interests of the wider society by listening to the complaints of slaves and prosecuting individual masters. Roman common law, as opposed to statutory law, was the law most commonly used in criminal cases involving slaves. This had two important implications. Firstly, Roman law did not deny the slave any personality and prosecutors constantly reminded slaveowners that slaves were persons. Secondly, Roman law had an apparent universality in that its dictates were made applicable to all in society. These factors combined to make the law perform a hegemonic function.

Clarke, M. A. "The development of slave laws in Louisiana 1724-1834." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2004. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.597724.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyses the development of slave laws in Louisiana from 1724 to 1834 and focuses on the factors that influenced the development of slave laws under French and Spanish colonial rule, and United States jurisdiction. This period represents the promulgation of the first slave code for French Louisiana during the frontier period when slavery was in its nascent stages, up to when Louisiana had already become one of the leaders in the consolidation of slavery in the South, at the very time abolitionists were adopting a more aggressive anti-slavery approach. Louisiana experienced important economic and social changes towards the end of the Spanish colonial period. These changes were in part responsible for the rebirth of slavery in the South. Socio-economic changes are used to illustrate that, while laws retain much of their heritage and foundation, they also respond to, and develop in accordance with other changes in the society. Louisiana’s civil law tradition, as opposed to English common law, has traditionally been used to characterise Louisiana’s slavery as benign and humane. My study seeks to refute this notion and concludes that any harshness in slave laws after 1803 was related more to the socio-economic development of territory, than to United States rule, and extension English common law. Chapter one examines the promulgation of the first slave law for the Louisiana territory and examines the changes that took place in French slave laws through a comparative analysis of the 1685 French Caribbean slave code with the 1724 Louisiana code noir. In a brief review, the general role of the catholic church in the development of slave laws in early French colonial Louisiana is examined. The second chapter examines the evolution of slave laws under Spanish colonial rule and the socio-economic conditions that brought about these changes. Chapter three traces the development of the law under the United States administration from 1803 to 1834 and examines the changes that took place from the time of the French and throughout Spanish rule. Protective laws and their role in Louisiana slave society are examined under the three regimes. This study deals specifically with the laws themselves as promulgated, and not with their practical administration.

Abstract:
In the Slavic grammar books of the 16th-17th centuries, the category of dual was represented in the fi rst Slovenian grammar book «Arcticae horulae succisivae» (1584, Wit-tenberg) by the Protestant grammarian A. Bohorič (1520 –1588) and in the grammar book of the Church Slavonic lan-guage «Slavonic Grammar with Correct Syntax» (1619, Jevje) by M. Smotrytsky (1578–1633 (?)).It was assumed earlier that the Slovenian grammar had had a possible impact on Smotrytsky’s Grammar. However, the analysis of the dual forms in Bohorič’s G r a m m a r and Smotrytsky’s Grammar showed that such an impact was most likely impossible. When creating their gram-mar books, the authors were guided by different aims: if A. Bohorič was following the practice of using the forms of a living language, then Smotrytsky was orienting towards the fi xed stable forms of dead written language.

Abstract:

Abstract:
“Flying machining” represents synchronization of an axis (slave) with a master axis in motion. One of the most important aspects of the design of “flying machining” operation is the choice of the proper law of motion of the slave axis. In literature, technical reports and papers can be found concerning this subject, but they deal with specific problems and the solutions or suggestions proposed are specific as well, suitable for those cases. In order to try to overcome this limitation, in this paper we analyze the subject of the flying machining operations from a wider point of view. We propose a unified design procedure with general validity, suitable for the choice of the slave axis’ law of motion for whatever “flying machining” operation. Furthermore methodologies for the selection of the drive system will be proposed. The procedure is described applying it on a cross sealing operation, typical of wrapping machine.

Abstract:
Abstract The paper summarized the experimental studies of adaptive structure vibration control in Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA). Two kinds of experimental setups are constructed, i.e. an adaptive feedback control setup and an adaptive feedforward control setup. The former is used for free vibration control, and the control law is realized by the Intel 80X87 floating point processor. A Single Input and Single Output (SISO) control strategy is presented and extended to Multi-Input and Multi-Output (MIMO) systems. Its adaptabilities to the locations of sensors and actuators are also evaluated. The latter is suitable for forced vibration control, e.g. periodic vibration control and random vibration control. Its theoretical base is adaptive filtering theory. Its data acquisition and control law calculation are finished by the master/slave computers. The master computer — an IBM PC or a compatible PC — is responsible for data acquisition, and the slave computer — the TMS320C30 Digital Signal Processor (DSP) — calculates the control law. The results for both periodic vibration control and random vibration control are shown.

Abstract:
According to characteristics of abdominal minimally invasive robotic surgical tasks, based on performant industrial computer platform, an extended multifunctional hardware communicates with PCI-bus is designed, a master-slave control system is studied. In order to solve the problem of low responsivity caused by traditional inverse kinematics transformation method, a algorithm based on equivalent differential transformation suitable for real-time master-slave surgical robot control is put forward, and the accumulated error of the algorithm is eliminated by feedback mechanism. A fast trajectory planning method efficient in real-time master-slave surgical robot control is put forward to replace traditional trajectory prediction and off-line calculation. Finally, in order to avoid the impact on the accuracy of the system coursed by hand-trembling of operators, a digital filter is designed to help filtering the master manipulator signal.

Abstract:
It was not uncommon in Brazil for slaves to own slaves. Slaves as masters of slaves existed in many slave societies and societies with slaves, but considering modern, chattel slavery in the Americas, Brazil seems to have been a special case where this phenomenon thrived, especially in nineteenth-century urban Bahia. The investigation is based on more than five hundred cases of enslaved slaveowners registered in ecclesiastical and manumission records in the provincial capital city of Salvador. The paper discusses the positive legal basis and common law rights that made possible this peculiar form of slave ownership. The paper relates slave ownership by slaves with the direction and volume of the slave trade, the specific contours of urban slavery, access by slaves to slave trade networks, and slave/master relations. It also discusses the web of convivial relations that involved the slaves of slaves, focusing on the ethnic and gender profiles of the enslaved master and their slaves.
