The present study attempted to characterize laxity in cruciate deficient knees using the Genucom System comparing the neutral to the resting position of the tibia. A quadriceps active technique was compared to a passive protocol at four knee flexion angles: 60, 70, 80 and 90 degrees. Eight ACL and eight PCL injured subjects performed active and passive anterior-posterior knee drawer tests. These tests were performed during two sessions to verify their reliability. However fluctuating hormones during the menstrual cycle may be an influencing factor since more ACL injuries have been observed preceding ovulation when estrogen levels increase. The human knee is a hinge joint, primarily facilitating locomotion. Knee joint instability, due to ligament injuries, is a result of direct or indirect trauma, non-anatomical stresses during pivoting movements about the knee, imbalanced landing during jumping and rapid deceleration during high intensity locomotion. Biomechanical indications of an unstable knee joint include decreased joint integrity, hyperlaxity, abrupt locking and catching combined with clicking noises during locomotion. This thesis looks at changes in joint laxity associated with the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and the menopause and the potential contribution of female hormones to that laxity. A pilot study revealed that there was a potential link between the phases of the menstrual cycle and the onset of musculo-skeletal injury. Objectives: To explore if joint mobility, as a measure of connective tissue quality, could be a predictor for pregnancy-related low back pain after pregnancy and to evaluate local corticosteroid injection treatment in women with persistent pelvic girdle pain long after childbirth. Material and methods: To investigate joint mobility in relation to pain, 200 women were examined repeatedly from early pregnancy until three months after delivery. O teste do pivot shift é a manobra semiológica mais específica para o diagnóstico da lesão do ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA). É também o único teste que se correlaciona com a probabilidade de desenvolvimento de osteoartrose em joelhos com instabilidade rotacional persistente, após a reconstrução do LCA.
