Morgan, David Charles. "Site layout and construction planning." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1986. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11627/.

Full text
Abstract:
The current usage of site layout information in construction planning techniques is investigated, and the layout development methods used in other fields such as Architecture and Production engineering are also reviewed. The limitations, applicability and potential of these models is discussed. The layout of a construction site affects the manner in which construction plans are formed. This research is an attempt to isolate the site layout factors which are taken into account in the planning stages of a project. The layout of a construction site may be utilised in the formation of construction plans in two ways. Firstly, the large scale layout of the structures may influence the order in which the structures are built. Secondly, the small scale layout of the work within each individual structure will determine the order in which that work will be carried out. A model has been developed which uses the two types of site layout information for the structure and activity sequencing in the production of construction plans on a micro-computer. The practicality and performance of this model has been tested by comparison of the plans produced with those produced with other planning methods and those produced in industry. The feasibility of the integration of this model with Computer-aided design packages has been discussed with a view to producing construction plans automatically from the contract drawings.

Full text
Abstract:
This Thesis addresses Factory Layout Problems, and reviews and evaluates the available layout techniques. Manufacturing as a system has been studied and reclassified for factory layout: space demands and spatial relationships have been considered as main principles of Factory Layout Planning. This forms a basis for the introduction of a new, more efficient Factory Layout Planning Methodology, denoted as SPACE MANAGEMENT. A new COMPUTER AIDED FACTORY LAYOUT PLANNING system is formulated as a tool for: - preparing 3-D templates of Work Station Modules and Equipment Modules; - drawing a requested interior of an industrial hall/bay in 3-D; - positioning any 'objects1 (spaces), via manual interactive programs i n 3-D; - automatic positioning of work stations and equipment in the bay, in 'technological' order (in 3-D), using an automatic positioning program, with a facility for: collision course finding(with objects within the bay), manual override for corrections, and finding an optimum size (width) of the bay. The resulting layout scene can be observed from any required Position and distance. The system includes a set of auxiliary programs for Manual Feeding of lines of work stations in 'technological' order and for basic capacity calculations. CAFLAP also opens a new way of economic evaluation of Projects and alternatives. CAFLAP is implemented in FORTRAN 77 and uses the Computer Graphics System PICASO.

Tzorbatzakis, Emmanuel. "Optimal LPG station layout for planning permission using expert systems." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 1989. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/26259.

Full text
Abstract:
The present work is concerned with assessing the layout of proposed or existing LPG retail outlets and modifying it to comply with regulations and/or to minimize the residual hazard. It is an attempt to automate the evaluation of LPG station layouts using both an expert system and a more conventional approach. The output of the present computing process is a layout assessed and optimized in terms of the applying regulations and/or imposed risk to the nearby communities. The process is flexible enough to accommodate various acceptability criteria. The computer implementation is flexible, sophisticated and user-friendly as it can accept and understand graphical input and effortlessly communicate with the expert system shell, the knowledge base, the risk calculation and the optimization sections. The various approaches and steps taken are described in the present dissertation. For demonstration purposes, the NSW Department of Environment and Planning Regulations have been collected into rules forming a knowledge base. Infringements (violations) of the regulations, if any, are reported. If desirable, the system will attempt to modify the layout so that it complies with the regulation set. Optimization in terms of safety distances and number of people living in the risk zones is possible. More conventionally, this process contains a way to automatically obtain individual and societal risks from a given LPG station layout. The results are then presented as IR contours and SR plots. A new concept introduced here is called Excess Societal Risk (ES) and serves as a measure of the risk unacceptability to society. Layout optimization can be achieved in terms of this ESR. Further possibilities, implications and applications for the system are discussed. The work done has resulted in the publication attached at the end of the present dissertation.

Abstract:

Elgendi, E. M. O. "An automated dynamic site layout planning system : a case study of Egypt." Thesis, University of Salford, 2016. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/41604/.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the serious tasks in the construction planning was the site layout planning as it had a considerable effect on construction sites. However, in practice site layout planning was often ignored or overlooked due to its complexity. Project Managers often performed a site layout planning based on experience, ad-hoc rules and first-come-first-serve approach which may lead to inefficient site layouts that had a negative effect on construction projects. Therefore, the automated systems can be considered as the most effective methods to develop an efficient site layout as they fully covered all concerns that cannot be taken into account by manual methods. Although, a lot of automated site layout planning systems had been developed to support this serious planning task. However, they remained having serious limitations and drawbacks such as a single objective, integrating with regular facilities and site areas only, 2D site layouts representation, inefficient approaches to reflect the dynamic nature of construction sites, ignoring space reuse and facilities relocation, equal area space search, generating static layout, did not cover end users’ requirements, highly complex for users, ignoring the user interaction and lacking of flexibility in the system design. This revealed the need to develop new automated systems to cover the limitations and drawbacks of the existing automated systems and offer the end users’ requirements. Furtherer more, the quantitative study of survey returned by twelve participations from the Egyptian sites guided this research to list the end users’ requirements. These results led to identifying MATrix LABoratory (MATLAB) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) as the suitable tool and technique to overcome the site layout planning limitations and shortcomings as well as offer the end users’ requirements. Therefore, this research had developed an automated dynamic site layout planning system (ASLS) which had positive impacts on the construction industry in terms of: (1) improving the site layout and space planning (2) maintaining the construction projects cost and time; (3) improving the overall safety of construction sites; and (4) protecting the surrounding environment. The automated system subjected to a validation process through two construction projects based in Egypt to examine its accuracy and effectiveness. The validation process results proved its accuracy and effectiveness in developing optimal site layouts for construction projects. In addition, an evaluation process was used to examine its functionality, completeness, performance, usability and user acceptance through functional (black-box) test, structural (white-box) test and users’ trial. The functional (black-box) and structural (white-box) tests results verified its completeness and performance. The users’ trial results indicated its usability in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction and revealed that it was acceptable to use and efficient as it saved time. This research concluded that the developed automated system (ASLS) was effective and outperformed existing automated systems in generating global site layouts while satisfying the layout constraints by offering a number of new capabilities. Furthermore, this research contributed to knowledge by creating an innovative dynamic space search method and formulation of a novel objective function that minimized the harmful effect of construction activity on the surrounding neighboring. Recommendation emerged from the research findings were used to suggest the integrating of the automated system with the Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) to facilitate the data exchange and provide the project stakeholder with different scenarios of site layout.

Abstract:
In this thesis we present an integrated formulation for production planning, facilities layout and process selection and provide two heuristics for solving the integrated problem. The traditional solution procedures to each of the subproblems are discussed. The decisions modeled in these three problems are interrelated and, in some cases, share overlapping data requirements. The integrated formulation provided is a mixed integer program. Solving this mixed integer program optimally is a hard problem. Thus, in this thesis we only provide heuristic solutions. An optimal branch and bound algorithm is suggested. Both heuristic solutions are demonstrated on a sample problem. The results of testing eight problems is recorded. Further suggestions for improving the heuristic solutions are also provided.

Hatami, Khosrowshahi S. R. "A non-deterministic approach to dynamic layout planning of flexible manufacturing systems." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1991. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/106904/.

Full text
Abstract:
A new approach to the dynamic layout planning problem is proposed which provides solutions to highly variable material flow patterns occurring over a multi-period planning horizon and is especially suitable for flexible manufacturing systems. A non-deterministic environment is considered in which there is assumed to be uncertainty in the future material flow data. The performance of the method is assessed by comparing the solution produced by this method with a set of data provided in the literature for which the claimed optimal solution is known. There is close agreement with the stated solution and the result is obtained with a fraction of the computational effort. The computational efficiency is due to a new construction method to generate static layout solutions. This method uses an algorithm in which the number of stages is proportional to the number of facilities rather than an exponentional relationship as found in most other methods. The method also uses an element of forward planning to ensure that early location assignments provide minimum restriction to assignments made later in the procedure. Results of extensive tests show that the new static layout planning procedure produces solutions generally better than existing construction techniques and comparable with improvement techniques such as CRAFT. The execution speed of the procedure makes it possible to solve large scale problems ( >30 )in very short time scales on Microcomputers. Incorporation of the fast new construction method into dynamic layout planning allows decision making concerning when and how to re-layout facilities in response to changes in predicted material flow.

Abstract:

Zhao, Yisong. "Evidence based design in healthcare : integrating user perception in automated space layout planning." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2013. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/12621.

Abstract:
Despite significant technological and scientific advances in healthcare provision and treatment in past decades, economies are struggling to address increasing costs while enhancing accessibility to quality health and care services. Globally, around 8.4% of gross domestic product (GDP) is spent on healthcare, with United States spending 17.4% of its GDP. There is, therefore, a growing interest in reducing healthcare costs and improving quality of care in terms of patients outcomes and their perception. Research has found strong association between physical environments and patient outcomes and staff and patient wellbeing. The acknowledgement of this link has led to the postulation of the idea of evidence based design (EBD) of healthcare facilities, in which design decisions are based on the evidence of the impact of environment on healthcare indicators. The key challenges for integrating EBD in healthcare design are the difficulty in disaggregating past research findings (i.e. evidence) from the context and the use of these findings, often hidden behind several behavioural and demographic variables or of the form of multi-dimensional indices, in design decision-making. Another recent development in healthcare is the patient-centred approach of care, in which patients perceptions and needs take the centre-stage in the planning and delivery of their care. Local and regional healthcare authorities are, therefore, interested in incorporating patients views in all aspects of care, including the design and operation of health and care facilities. Considering the gaps in knowledge, this research was aimed at investigating: users perception of physical environment indicators that had the potential for influencing their wellbeing and care outcomes, and the integration of their perception in the design of healthcare facilities through automated space layout planning. Perceptions of physical environment indicators were investigated using structured questionnaires among three user groups: inpatients, outpatients and healthcare providers. Resulting perception indicators were then used in a prototype automated space layout planning system, developed as part of this research, to aid the optimization process. The research has identified significant differences in perception between different user groups, in particular between males and females. Analyses of scaled responses indicate that environmental design (e.g. lighting and thermal comfort) and maintenance (e.g. cleanliness) related factors are more important to users than abstract architectural design factors (e.g. aesthetics). Accommodating the variation in perception would require individual approaches for the design of constituent spaces in a healthcare facility. With regard to the integration of user perception in design, the research demonstrates that qualitative indicators such as perception can be integrated in automated design frameworks and, therefore, design decisions can be based on a mix of quantitative and qualitative evidence. The application of automated layout planning system in the design of healthcare space layouts also demonstrates that computer-mediated systems and frameworks are a promising alternative to traditional manual design, if increasing number of design factors and objectives are to be reconciled for decision making.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the application of a tool for experiencing the usage of Virtual Reality (VR) in the factory layout planning process of Scania. The goal is to evaluate the system's collaborative capabilities and to assess the usability. The study combines existing methodologies in a novel way. The method consists of recording 16 participants in performing a collaborative task, and then coding for Collaborative Joint attention (CJA). Furthermore the evaluation makes use of the System Usability Scale (SUS) and Nielsen's Heuristics. The system's score on the SUS appeared to be above average, but participants with higher experience in factory planning gave higher scores. There were numerous problems related to the physical room being smaller than the virtual room, user control was limited and the embodiment of the users (avatars) proved to be distracting. The findings have implications for builders and evaluators of multiparty VR systems, that allow for collaboration.

The service sector is of fundamental importance to the global economy, but the layout of organizations in this sector is typically not approached with the same intensity with which physical arrangement is discussed in industrial environments. Abstract:
<p>With increasing demands in terms of timing, area and power, today’s ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) designers are faced with new problems as technology emerges. Ericsson has started to work in 65 nm and realized that the methods used in previous, larger technologies, does not offer good enough correlation between synthesis and the results after physical placement. This leads to several expensive and time consuming iterations back and forth between Ericsson and the ASIC vendor.</p><p>In order to narrow the gap between Ericsson and the ASIC vendor, and hence increase correlation, physical planning has been identified as a possible solution. Cadence First Encounter, part of the Cadence Encounter digital IC design platform, is an advanced tool for silicon virtual prototyping. The tool basically brings back-end placement knowledge to front-end ASIC designers.</p><p>This master’s thesis main goal is to evaluate Cadence First Encounter and investigate how it could be integrated with Ericsson’s design flow. The tool has been tested on previous designs with known issues and the results are positive. By using the prototype work flow in First Encounter that is described in this report, it is possible to identify and correct issues with the netlists in time, which will help shortening the lead time in projects and hence also the time to market.</p>

Abstract:
Plant layout is the heart of any production line because if the layout is not properly laid, there can be numerous consequences. Planning a layout for an SME is the most crucial and tedious job for a manufacturer because it is time-consuming and sometimes a costly process. Therefore, there is a need to choose appropriate methods to overcome certain problems and plan a good layout for the SMEs.The purpose of this thesis report is to explore methods that can help to plan the layout according to the requirements provided by the SME. This involves a detailed study conducted to understand the processes at the case company. However, change of layout is not just making changes to the existing layout, but some SMEs must plan a completely new layout where they can start from scratch. Similarly, in this case, a Swedish manufacturing company REHOBOT Rotex AB has provided all the data required for planning the layout. This leads the authors to study the entire production flow to know the current layout and identify the problems that exist in the plant. The approach of this thesis was a case study where the company has provided all the details like documents, current layout plans, and video recording of the plant. The study shows that maximum time is spent in the replenishment of storage and unnecessary movement of materials between the machines in the current facility. These activities can be classified as Nonvalue added or just can be addressed as waste. Therefore, there is a need to implement lean tools and use the SLP method to plan the new layout systematically. This method led to form alternative layout plans that consisted of changes made depending on the current layout. These changes will fetch the advantages and disadvantages that can further help in evaluating the alternatives using WFA. Once evaluated, the layout that turned out to be the best will be suggested and presented to the case company.

Abstract:
Purpose: The research purpose is to, in a systematic way, build a method to develop suggestions regarding layout planning of gates in a marine terminal and additionally conduct a base for a simulation model. Approach: Firstly, a literature review has been conducted in the fields relevant to port security and gate configurations in marine terminals. Secondly, a case study has been executed in a Swedish marine terminal. The case study consisted of interviews and observations at the case company, who also provided this thesis with numerical raw data. Additionally, a benchmarking was conducted at a company in the same port area where interviews and observations was executed.   Findings: The findings in this thesis resulted in a methodology improvement, which contains important procedure steps that need to be considered while conducting a layout for a gate in a marine terminal. The procedure resulted in a conceptual model that was conducted as a result of the literature review and verified by being tested in the case study. Limitation: The thesis is limited to one case company. Even though it verified and validated the findings, additional case companies are recommended to fully validate the conceptual model which applies for further research. Further limitations to this thesis is that the financial- and technical factors will not be executed.   Theoretical implications: Companies who plans to increase the security in their marine terminal area or implement a new gate system can benefit from the findings. This thesis contributes to science by adding new theory.   Practical implications: This thesis conducted a conceptual model for a layout procedure which recommends to follow while planning a layout for a gate in a marine terminal. The model were verified with a case company and provided two layout suggestions that can be implemented at the specific company.

Leonard, Trudie. "Comparing airport apron layout designs using computer simulation and the cross-entropy method." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/17821.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The demand in air travel is continuously increasing. In order to handle this increase in demand, airports need to physically expand or the management of the airports needs to improve. When the demand at OR Tambo International Airport gets too high, more passengers will need to travel to Lanseria International Airport, which will therefore need to be expanded. The study was done in collaboration with Virtual Consulting Engineers, who decided that the concept of Atlanta International Airport in Georgia, USA, which is ranked the busiest airport in the world, will be used in this expansion. The aim of the study was to minimise passenger walking distances and waiting times at Lanseria International Airport. This was done by comparing di erent airport apron layouts, using simulation, and improving the aircraft gate assignment, using the cross-entropy method. Four di erent designs of airport layouts, all based on that of Atlanta International Airport, were compared in the study. A model of each was developed using simulation. The performance measures used to compare the designs included 1) the average walking distance of arriving and departing passengers at the airport, 2) the average time spent at the airport by arriving and departing passengers, 3) the average distance travelled by aircraft at the airport, 4) the average time by which each aircraft is delayed and 5) the average number of aircraft present at the airport. The walking distance of arriving and departing passengers was largely a ected by the way in which ights were assigned to gates. The gates at the airport are of three di erent sizes: small, medium and large. Small aircraft can park at any of the gates, while medium aircraft can only park at medium or large gates and large aircraft can only park at large gates. Three rules for the ight-to-gate assignment process were developed. In the rst two rules an arriving ight was assigned to the available, suitable gate closest to the terminal building. The constraint that small aircraft cannot be assigned to medium or large gates if there are small gates available and that medium aircraft cannot be assigned to large gates if there are medium gates available, was used in Rule 1 and not in Rule 2. In the third rule, metaheuristic optimisation was used to determine a ight-to-gate assignment schedule with the objective of minimising the passenger walking distances. This metaheuristic optimisation was performed in real-time and was thus repeated every time a delay occurred at the airport. The background of airports, simulation, metaheuristics and relevant case studies were investigated in the literature review. The simulation and metaheuristic optimisation models were then developed. The results identi ed the best of the four designs that were compared. It was also concluded that the use of metaheuristic optimisation, using the cross-entropy method, results in a reduction in passenger walking distances at the airport.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die aantal lugpassasiers neem aanhoudend toe en om in staat te wees om hierdie toename in vraag te hanteer moet lughawens sies uitbrei of die bestuur van die lughawens moet verbeter. 'n Klein vliegtuig mag by 'n klein, medium of groot hek parkeer, 'n medium vliegtuig mag by 'n medium of groot hek parkeer en 'n groot vliegtuig mag net by 'n groot hek parkeer.

Abstract:
Digitalization is an upcoming trend that divides the manufacturing industry of today. As an increasing number of companies chose to implement digitalization as a business strategy, some companies still struggle with implementing digitalization into their businesses. Previous research has developed digital transformation models, but has been admitted as too generic. This thesis used the most comprehensive transformation model as base and aimed to make it practically implementable for a manufacturing company with a process layout. To enable this, a case study was conducted on a steel-processing company with this layout design. This thesis had an inductive approach, where primary data were collected from one selected company through a pilot study and semi structured interviews, and secondary data were collected through a literature review. During the study, it was discovered that a company can benefit from using a customized guidance of how to implement digitalization, to optimally use digital opportunities. This thesis contributed with additional steps and extensions of the previous transformation model. The contribution consisted of the involvement of competency, creation of definition, identified digitalization trends relating to a SWOT analysis, additional phenomenon to take into consideration when analyzing future scenarios, additional questions to consider when analyzing impacted areas, creation of a digital business strategy, a comparison of impacted areas with previous projects, additional identified actions to fill the gap between current state and goals, and five identified criteria’s on how to prioritize these actions. This study extends current research with details and depth regarding a digital transformation model, and hence make it more practical. For future research, a case study testing the potential of the transformation model on a similar company should be conducted, and thereby improve the model further.<br>Digitalisering är en uppgående trend som delar upp dagens tillverkningsindustri.

However, the aisle layout can also significantly enhance the performance of order picking operations. This paper intends to develop an algorithm for planning the aisle layout of distribution center. The procedures of dynamic programming are adopted in the algorithm to decide picking routing. Under random storage policy, the simulation results show that the picking distance can be decreased by increasing the number of cross aisle only when the average number of items to be picked or the length-to-width ratio of storage area are small. Whereas, under class storage policy, the picking distance can be decreased by increasing the amount of cross aisle in most cases.

The greatest impact on the industrial are the “Two Trillion &; Two Star” that government tried to foster in 2002. In the mean time, the industry and government realized that the key point is their own core technology except to cost control. Taiwan government tried to set up a new enterprise, Taiwan Memory Company, for integrating DRAM industry in that time. But it was failed because strategic partners, Elpida, declared bankrupt in 2012. The DRAM process is still relying on transfer from foreign companies. The investment on equipments occupied the majority of capital expenditures in the semiconductor industry. The managers should pay more attentions on how to maximize the equipment utilization to avoid the unnecessary investment. The first step to maximize equipment utilization is to optimize the layout for building, facility, and equipment. This research used “Systematic Layout Planning, SLP” to study DRAM Manufacturing Company layout planning method, the correlation between each manufacturing department in three stages, and to Optimize initial equipment layout plan by “Minimizing the Moving Distance”. After that, they would study the layout improvement method, KPI during process conversion period. This study provides a practical application about improvement process of layout planning for reference.

Abstract:
<p>The construction industry contributes significantly to the GDP of the United States, attributing to its growth at an unprecedented rate. Efficient planning on all stages of construction is the only way to combat dynamic obstructions and deliver projects on time. The first element involved in the planning phase deals with the layout of the Construction Site. It significantly regulates the pace at which construction operations function and directly affects the time, cost, and safety linked to the successful delivery of the target project. Hence, it is paramount to ensure that every component of the construction site maneuvers with the utmost productivity. One such equipment that occupies significant attention while carrying out the CSLP process is Tower Crane. Tower crane optimization is pivotal to ensure proper lifting and handling of materials, and warrant conflict-free work zones. This research, therefore, aims to optimize its position by maximizing the lift ability. To achieve the goals, Generative Design- a paradigm that integrates the constructive features of mathematical and visual optimization techniques, is used to develop a relatively comprehensible prototype. The first part of the research, thus, utilized Generative Design on two construction sites- one from the United States and one from India. After implementing the visual programming algorithm, an improvement of 40% was warranted in the lift score. A pool of potential alternatives was explored and supplemented by the trade-off illustrations. The concept of trade-off was substantiated by allowing a framework for prioritization of lift cycles, and facilitating a holistic decision-making process. To evaluate the usability, 12 participants were chosen based on their previous experience with tower crane operations. The participants witnessed a live demonstration of the algorithm, answered a Likert scale questionnaire, and appeared for an open-ended interview to provide feedback about the proposed Generative Design technique. After carrying out narrative analysis for the usability aspect- it has been unanimously observed that the technique has extreme efficiency of usage and can evidently prevent the occurrence of errors. The study concludes by providing recommendations to augment the significance and usability of Generative Design for tower crane position optimization. </p><br>

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北科技大學<br>經營管理系碩士班<br>103<br>A space layout planning problem focuses on how to find an optimal layout of a given space in the limited resources and specific conditions. Although many methods have been proposed to solve this problem, for example: the enumerative method and various heuristic algorithms, they cannot guarantee the quality of the solution obtained or solve the problem efficiently. Therefore, how to find an optimal space layout within a reasonable time becomes an important issue. This study proposes a deterministic optimization approach to solve this problem. According to the users needs and constraints, we construct a mathematical model and solve the model for finding the feasible solution. Moreover, this study derives multiple feasible solutions with the same objective value such that decision makers can flexibly choose an optimal layout for more practical considerations. Several examples are presented to illustrate the usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:
博士<br>國立臺灣科技大學<br>營建工程系<br>106<br>Construction material layout planning is a key project in temporary facility layouts. When allocating materials without effective resource consolidation and planning in advance, construction managers usually have difficulties in comprehensively determining resource demand to optimize material layout. This also leads to reduced efficiency, increased cost, and unnecessary loss of time. Currently, various sources of information concerning layout planning are disorganized and lack a consistent format, forcing construction managers to continually collect the required data from various sources and consolidate them into diagrams. This repetitive and time-consuming process is extremely cumbersome for construction managers. This study proposed the Dynamic Construction Material Layout Planning Optimization Model to investigate the optimization of material layout from the perspective of dynamic task scheduling. In addition to the variables of schedule advancement and evolution, dynamic material requirements, and changes in storage sites and areas, task float times were analyzed to account for the changes in three-dimensional travel distances between material supply and demand sites concurrently with changes in task schedules and ensure that the observations conformed to real-time conditions. First, schedule and building information modeling techniques as well as the procedures for quantity take-off and construction materials and quantity analysis were consolidated to produce dynamic material requirements data for construction layout planning. Second, the symbiotic organisms search algorithm was applied to derive the optimized construction site material layout plan. Finally, the proposed model was applied to a construction project. The required total distance for the dynamic material layout plan was 954,736 m, which saved roughly half of the required distance compared with the fixed material layout plan of 1,659,457 m. This greatly reduced material transportation costs and validated the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Abstract:
Plant layout problems involve distributing different resources or departments in a given plant and achieving maximum efficiency for the services or goods being made or offered. To this end, plants are designed to optimize production flow from the first stage (i.e. as raw material) to finish product. However, optimization which is generally expressed either in terms of minimization (for example, of material handling costs) or of maximization (for example, the number of desired adjacencies in a qualitative chart) is not always feasible when real problems or real sizes are being handled. The level of complexity may turn out considerable as the number of parameters, restrictions and other variables considered in the study become larger. This kind of problem has been formulated, from a mathematical view point as a static quadratic assignment problem. However, the number of problems that are usceptible to being solved by optimization methods is very limited. Some alternatives have been called from the field of graph-theory, direct method algorithms, construction algorithms (such as CORELAP), and improvement algorithms (such as CRAFT). In this thesis work, an attempt is made to develop the algorithm for solving layout problem with real-life restriction like aisles, used in factories for the easy transfer of materials from one section to the other, using Genetic Algorithm.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立成功大學<br>土木工程學系碩博士班<br>90<br>Abstract Construction engineers usually have to properly allocate construction facilities, such as material warehouses, the batch plant, or the job site office, so that the workflows within different working parties are smooth and the high productivity at the job site can be achieved. However, because of the dynamic sequences at the construction site, it is important that the facility layout of the construction site should be coordinated with the project schedule. Previous research related to the dynamic facility layout problem takes subjective weighting approach to determine the closeness between facilities. Such approach usually results in that the layout of the facilities is controlled by the subjective closeness coefficients, which is not practically acceptable. In addition, the solutions generated by the previous research are not flexible for the construction engineers to perform what-if analysis. This research first analyzed the characteristics of different construction facilities during the construction period in terms of variations in size and location. A new dynamic facility layout model that the closeness between facilities is determined according to the project schedule is then developed. Furthermore, an elite non-dominate genetic algorithm (ENDGA) based on Pareto front is developed to solve the newly established model. Results showed that with the objectively determining the closeness of facilities, the facility layout is more practically acceptable at the construction site. The solutions generated by using ENDGA also provide the more flexible facility layout. A user-friendly program coded with Microsoft Visual Basic 6, is built to provide a practical tool for the construction engineers to easy the facility layout planning process.
