Ferro, Susan Carmel. "Visual imagery instruction with learning disabled and average achieving students." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37741.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this two-phase study was to investigate the effects of rate of presentation and type of material on the use of visual imagery in learning disabled (LD) and average achieving (AA) students. In the first phase, a norming study, 15 LD and 15 AA students were instructed to generate images for a list of concrete paired associates. The amount of time required to generate an image and the particular inlage reported was recorded. Based upon processing time and an image similarity index, 18 easy-to-relate and 18 difficult-to-relate word pairs were identified. Two rates of presentation (5 seconds and 10 seconds) were also determined in the norming study. In the second phase, an experimental study, 40 LD and 40 AA students were presented with the word pairs derived from the norming study, at a 5 second and a 10 second rate. The experimental task involved learning the word paIrs under either imagery or rehearsal instructions. Students were tested for associative recall after each learning trial by being presented one member of each pair and being required to recall its pairmate. Subjects were subsequently asked to report on the strategies they implemented to learn the word pairs. Data were analyzed using a 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 (group x instruction x presentation rate x pair difficulty) ANOVA with repeated measures on the last two factors. A series of separate imagery/rehearsal planned comparisons were conducted within each group/ presentation rate/pair difficulty combination. In addition, descriptive statistics were computed on the number and types of strategies reported by the students. Both LD and AA students benefited from the imagery strategy with both types of pairs at both rates.
Ph. D.

Ferry, John. "Rational and harmonic approximation on F.P.A. sets." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39825.

Full text
Abstract:
Let K be a compact subset of complex N-dimensional space, where N ≥ 1. Let H(K) denote the functions analytic in a neighborhood of K. Let R(K) denote the closure of H(K) in C(K). We study the problem: What is R(K)? The study of R(K) is contained in the field of rational approximation. In a set of lecture notes, T. Gamelin [6] has shown a certain operator to be essential to the study of rational approximation. We study properties of this operator. Now let K be a compact subset of real N-dimensional space, where N ≥ 2. Let harmK denote those functions harmonic in a neighborhood of K. Let h(K) denote the closure of harmK in C(K). We also study the problem: What is h(K)? The study of h(K) is contained in the field of harmonic approximation. As well as obtaining harmonic analogues to our results in rational approximation, we also produce a harmonic analogue to the operator studied in Gamelin's notes.
Ph. D.

Ferrandino, Donna S. "The nutrition and hydration of older adult cancer patients in hospice." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39043.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of artificial means of nutrition and hydration for terminally ill patients is a controversial topic, involving medical, legal, social, and ethical issues. Often, the patient who is dying in the hospital and ceases to eat and drink receives tube feeding. In contrast, hospice patients are usually not given tube feeding, and emphasis is placed on palliative treatment. The purpose of the first project was to describe the dietary intake of twelve older adult cancer patients in home hospice care. The mean daily intakes of energy for males ranged from 657 to 2142 kcal per day, or from 28 to 93% of the recommended intake (RI). For females, the mean daily intakes of energy ranged from 358 to 1852 kcal per day or from 18 to 97% of the RI. Intakes for protein, carbohydrate, fat, and select vitamins and minerals were also highly variable. It was found that some patients survived for extended periods of time with very low intakes of food and fluids. Also, three patients who died during the study showed gradually declining intakes of food and fluids until death. In the second project, a structured interview was administered to 14 hospice patients and 18 family members to determine their knowledge, perceptions, attitudes, and wishes concerning tube feeding for seriously and terminally ill patients. Responses to the questions indicated that in general patients were less opposed to the use of aggressive means of nutrition support than were family members. Also, three of the patients, and only one family member indicated that they would want to receive tube feeding if they became unable to eat and drink by themselves. Both patients and family members mentioned circumstances related to patient autonomy and prognosis as reasons why it would be permissible to withhold tube feeding from a patient. The third project presents five case studies of hospice patients who died without receiving artificial nutrition or hydration. The patients' medical records were examined, and their nurses or family members were interviewed about their symptoms and conditions during the dying process. Results indicated that most of the patients experienced no anxiety or restlessness, no nausea or vomiting, and no additional pulmonary problems as death approached. In four patients, pain was either absent or under control. Although four patients stopped eating three to seven days before death, they did not appear to exhibit hunger or thirst during this time. All five patients were reported to have died peacefully. These case studies appear to support the position that terminal starvation and dehydration do not cause pain or discomfort to patients who die without tube feeding. In fact, such patients may experience relief from troublesome symptoms.
Ph. D.

Full text
Abstract:
The author of this report has long been interested in the process of developing software. Commonly referred to as "software engineering", the definition and standardization of the process has been a subject of concern throughout the software industry. As early as 1972, Frederick P. Brooks likened large system programming efforts to the La Brea Tar Pits; the muck, mire and tar of software development delays and cost overruns eventually defeating even the most skillful and experienced developers. [1] This report is intended to provide another stepping stone through the tar.
The author was fortunate to be provided the opportunity to develop two similar software projects, in like hardware environments, using different development approaches. The first project was developed using an Evolutionary Development approach, the later system utilized the current government standard, DOD-STD-2167A. This report outlines the lessons learned in applying these development approaches.
This report does not intend to criticize either the Evolutionary Development or DOD-STD-2167A approaches to developing software. Rather this analysis seeks to identify factors and issues which software developers should consider in implementing either of these approaches.
Master of Science

Feng, Ming-Fa. "Fault diagnosis and prediction in reciprocating air compressors by quantifying operating parameters." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39786.

Full text
Abstract:
This research introduces a new method of diagnosing the internal condition of a reciprocating air compressor. Using only measured load torques and shaft dynamics, pressures, temperatures, flow rates, leakages, and heat transfer conditions are quantified to within 5%. The load torque acting on the rotor of the machine is shown to be a function of the dynamics (instantaneous position, velocity, and acceleration) of the driving shaft, the kinematic construction, and the internal condition of the machine. If the load torque, the kinematic construction of the machine, and the dynamics of the rotor are known, then the condition of the machine can be assessed. A theoretical model is developed to describe the physical behavior of the slider-crank mechanism and the shaft system. Solution techniques, which are based on the machine construction, crankshaft dynamics, and load torque measurements, are presented to determine the machine parameters. A personal computer based system used to measure the quantities necessary to solve for the machine parameters and the quantities used to compare with calculations is also documented. The solution algorithm for multi-stage compressors is verified by decoupling the load torque contributed by each cylinder. Pressure data for a four-stage two-cylinder high pressure air compressor (HPAC) is used. Also, the mathematical model is proven feasible by using measured angular velocity of the crankshaft and direct measurements of the load torque of a single stage, single cylinder air compressor to solve for the machine parameters. With this unintrusive and nondestructive method of quantifying the operating parameters, the cylinder pressures, operating temperatures, heat transfer conditions, leakage, and power consumption of a reciprocating air compressor can be evaluated.
Ph.
