Hoffman, Rhonda M. "Pre-weaning diet and stall weaning method influences on stress response in foals." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40651.

Full text
Abstract:

The response of foals to the stress of weaning was examined in terms of a behavioral protocol and the responses of plasma ascorbate, serun1 cortisol, and the serum cortisol response to an ACTH challenge. Behavior scores (1 to 10) as an index of stress were assigned to each foal daily, with high scores indicating less stress and better adjustment. The experimental plan was a 2 X 2 factorial of pre-weaning diet and stall weaning method. Foals were raised on pasture supplemented with hay and a pelleted concentrate (PHC) or pasture supplemented with hay only (PH). Foals were placed in stalls singly or in pairs for weaning. Gender influences were also examined. The foals exhibited characteristic behavioral and physiological responses to the social dislocative stress of weaning. Behavior scores were lower in paired than in single foals (p = .008) and tended to be lower in PH than PHC foals (p = .15). No differences in post-weaning plasma ascorbate concentrations were found among treatments. Responses of serum cortisol to an ACTH challenge were lower in PH than PHC foals (p = .001) and in paired than single foals (p = .058), and lower responses were taken to represent adrenal depletion arising from stress. Behavior scores were positively correlated with the response of serum cortisol to ACTH. Both behavioral data and the serum cortisol response to ACTH indicate that foals were better able to cope with weaning stress when supplemented with concentrate prior to weaning and when weaned singly.
Master of Science

Hoehn, William Kenneth. "A deterministic concurrent product, production, and capacity planning model for design, manufacture, and support." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37894.

Full text
Abstract:
This research shows that a model that concurrently determines product, production, and capacity can provide better results than a model that makes these decisions sequentially. Three versions of a life-cycle complete concurrent model and corresponding sequential model that solve product, production, and capacity planning problems are mathematically formulated and compared through an hypothetical example. All versions of the concurrent and sequential models consider three types of work centers and corresponding types of capital budgeting projects. Each version of the concurrent and sequential models considers a specific type of capital budgeting project. These are: (1) projects that may be partially accepted with no upper limit, (2) projects that may be partially accepted with an upper limit of one, and (3) projects restricted to values of zero and one. An hypothetical example spanning twelve fiscal periods that included five products, two product sub-groups, one pre-production/post-support project, three production projects, and one support project was developed to enable comparison of the models. Nine comparisons between each of the three versions of the concurrent and sequential models were conducted resulting in a total of 27 comparisons. Comparisons of the models required the development of five computer programs. Four of these programs provided Mathematical Programming System (MPS) formatted mixed integer linear programs (MIP) that were solved using the LINDO/386 optimization program. The fifth program read output from LINDO/386 and provided the future worth of the sequential model. Results obtained from tests of the concurrent and sequential models were compared based upon future worth, capital budgeting projects funded, products funded, production and inventory quantities, and regular and overtime labor levels. For every combination of product sub-group demand and capital budgeting constraint type, the concurrent model always provided the highest future worth. In addition, while both models funded the same set of products, the concurrent model provided more level labor, production and inventory quantities, and support for products. Following these comparisons, it was concluded that, for any capital budgeting constraint type and product sub-group demand, a concurrent model can provide better planning results than a sequential model.
Ph. Holley, Richard D. "Time dependent adaptive filters for interference cancellation in CDMA systems." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40656.

Full text
Abstract:
Interference is a major problem in modern wireless communications systems. No longer are background noise and average power loss the limiting factors in system capacity corruption of the available spectrum by multiple access and nearby interference provides the upper limit to system capacity. If the exponential growth of commercial wireless communications is to continue, systems must effectively deal with the increasingly crowded and corrupted spectrum.
Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum modulation (DS-SS) combined with Time Dependent Processing represents a valid approach to meeting the needs of future communications systems. Traditionally, the exploitation of cyclostationarity in digital communications signals has been reserved for the hostile communication environments faced by the military. However, the advent of cost-effective, high-speed DSP chips and associated processing hardware have made Time Dependent Processing a viable commercial technology.
This thesis presents several forms of the Time Dependent Adaptive Filter (TDAF) which are able to fully exploit the cyclostationarity and high degree of spectral correlation in certain DS-SS signals. It is shown that these optimal TDAFs are able to combat interference from noise, multipath, signals with dissimilar modulation, and signals with similar modulation (multiple access interference). Performance gains are achieved without a knowledge of the specific type of interference and depend solely on the high degree of spectral correlation in DS-SS signals. It is shown that properly designed DS-SS CDMA systems that utilize the TDAF can achieve spectral efficiencies which are within 10% of FDM/TDM systems.
Furthermore, these systems reta~n the benefits of wideband modulation and universal frequency reuse traditionally associated with CDMA systems. The net result is a tremendous increase in system user capacity and signal reception quality.
Master of Science

Howe, James D. "A national assessment of the salaries and working conditions of agricultural education teachers in the United States, 1990-1991." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39836.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to determine the salaries and working conditions of agricultural education teachers in the United States. To accomplish this purpose the following objectives were identified: 1. To determine the demographic characteristics of agricultural education teachers. 2. To determine the salaries, salary supplements, and monetary fringe benefits of agricultural education teachers. 3. To determine the nonmonetary benefits of agricultural education teachers. 4. To determine the major instructional and noninstructional responsibilities of agricultural education teachers. 5. To describe the work settings and working conditions in which agricultural education teachers are employed. 6. To determine the work loads of agricultural education teachers. Most agricultural education teachers reported receiving health insurance benefits. However, only a small percentage (14.7%) of respondents reported receiving fully paid health insurance for themselves and their families. In addition, fewer than one-half (41.4%) of the agricultural education teachers reported receiving fully paid major medical insurance, eye care (13.1%), dental care (20.5%), and life insurance (35.3%). Production agriculture and agricultural mechanics remain the predominant subjects taught by agricultural education teachers. However, a majority of agricultural education teachers also reported teaching agriscience. Although only a small percentage (18.8%) of agricultural education teachers advised Young Farmer chapters, most (95.8%) advised FFA chapters. Nearly all (98.4%) agricultural education teachers classified their employment status as full-time. Typically, agricultural education teachers were mployed a mean 11.3 months per year. Most (69.5%) agricultural education teachers were employed in comprehensive high schools with a mean student population of 662.4 students. Agricultural education teachers reported a mean of 6.7 periods in a typical school day and teaching load of 5.2 instructional periods per day. Nearly three-fourths of the respondents reported having one period per day allotted for planning, student visitations, or student conferences.
Ed. D.

Horning, Leslie Sauder. "Development of polyimide/metal gradient microcomposite films." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44460.

Full text
Abstract:
Polyimides are attractive polymers because of valued intrinsic properties such as high thermal stability and good solvent resistance. At the same time, much effort is put into modifying polyimides to introduce different properties. This thesis describes a study where polyimides were modified with soluble metal compounds in an effort to create microcomposite films in which the location of the composite structure was controlled; namely at the film interfaces. Two different modification techniques were used in this study, in-situ chemical generation and infusion deposition. Results indicate that infusion deposition was successful in producing a gradient microcomposite structure in polyimide films when silver(I)nitrate was the metal dopant. Analysis revealed that formation of the microcomposite structure depends upon the glass transition temperature and precure temperature of the polyimide film being modified.
Master of Science

Hoe, Ruan. "An assessment of the determinants of interprovincial migration in China, 1982-1987." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42002.

Full text
Abstract:
This study attempted to assess the major determinants of interprovincial migration in the People's Republic of China. The findings suggest that the classical gravity and pull-push hypotheses can also find supporting evidence in the People's Republic of China. Basically, the differential socio-economic characteristics and circumstances determined interprovincial population movement, but relatively speaking, the destination factors played more important roles. Among the variables examined in the study, destination investment and agricultural income level had the strongest pull-force on migrants. On the other hand, unemployment of destination was found to have a push-force discouraging migrants. From the contrast between the positive effect of the destination investment and negative one of the destination unemployment, a conclusion was drawn that the interprovincial migration was largely job-related. Moreover, people in the origin with a higher level of industrialization were less likely to migrate. The analysis also found that the higher level of educational attainment at the origin relative to that at the destination, the higher the migration. In addition, in spite of the similar influence of population and distance on male and female migration streams, the socio-economic conditions affected male migration stream to a larger extent than female migration streams.
Master of Science

Howerton, Mollie W. "An exploration of the relationship between parenting styles and health risk-taking behaviors among early phase adolescents." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42144.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine whether a relationship exists between parenting styles, adolescent self-esteem, and health risk behaviors. The sample consisted of 343 middle school students from Harrisonburg, Virginia who completed a questionnaire consisting of three major components: parenting styles, self-esteem, and health risk behaviors. The health risk behaviors component contained questions concerning alcohol use, drug use, sexual activity, and eating behaviors. The parenting styles section of the questionnaire classified the participants into one of four types of parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and neglectful. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale divided the participants into one of three levels of self esteem: low, average, and high. The risky behaviors component of the questionnaire classified the participants as being low risk-takers, experimenters, or high risk-takers, with the exception of the eating behaviors component, which classified participants as being either high or low risk takers. In general, no relationship was found between parenting styles, self-esteem, and health risk behaviors.
Master of Science

Hofmann, Klaus. "Synthesis, properties, and morphology of lignin based epoxy resins." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37407.

Full text
Abstract:
Star-like lignin-poly(propylene oxide) copolymers were prepared by chain-extending steam exploded lignins (tulipifera liriodendron) with propylene oxide and by subsequent endcapping with ethylene oxide. Epoxidation of these copolymers was carried out with epichlorohydrin at room temperature, using KOH as oxyanion forming reagent. The epoxidized compounds were fractionated by solvent precipitation to remove poly(alkylene oxide) homopolymers and to prepare fractions of narrow molecular weight distributions. The epoxides were cross-linked with meta phenylene diamine yielding thermosets which were, depending on lignin content, either low modulus elastomers, or high modulus materials with considerable ductility. The modulus of elasticity was a strong and linear function of lignin content, whereby the highest value was 1100MPa (57% lignin). The curing reaction was of nth-order type, whereby the reaction order changed from close to one at the beginning of the curing reaction to 2, once the reaction becomes diffusion controlled. Curing induced partial demixing of the lignin and poly(propylene oxide) phases which yielded a secondary structure where lignin rich domains in the order of 10 nm were interspersed in a matrix of lignin poor material. However, from TEM and ¹³C solid state cross-polarized NMR analyses it was evident that the domain structure was not that of a classical micro-phase separated copolymer with well defined phase boundaries, but rather had broad interphases. Additionally, the results of multifrequency dynamic mechanical thermal analysis showed that the lignin containing thermosets have very broad glass transition ranges which most likely were due to transitional phase inhomogeneities and provided these materials with good vibrational damping ability.
Ph. Hove, Mark Curtis. "Distribution and life history of the endangered James Spinymussel, pieurobema collina (bivalvia: unionidae)." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/41981.

Full text
Abstract:
Distribution of the James spinymussel (Pleurobema collina) and aspects of its life history were studied from June 1987 to October 1989. Field and laboratory observations were used to determine gravidity and glochidial release periods, fish host requirements, age class structure, growth characteristics, and juvenile survival. Stream surveys conducted at 243 sites in 20 counties revealed new populations of this species in three subdrainages (Catawba Creek, Pedlar River, and Mechums River), of the James River, greatly expanding its known range.
Female P. collina were gravid from late May through early August 1988 and 1989 in Craig Creek, Virginia, and the South Fork Potts Creek, West Virginia. Glochidia were released from late June through early July in the South Fork Potts Creek, at mean water temperatures between 21 and 25 °C, and discharges between 0.013 and 0.050 m l/sec.
Field observations and laboratory tests confirmed that cyprinids serve as fish hosts for P. collina glochidia. Glochidia of the James spinymussel were identified on the common shiner (Notropis cornutus), rosyside dace (Clinostomus funduloides), bluehead chub (Nocomis leptocephalus), pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus), and fantail darter (Etheostoma flabellare) in the South Fork Potts Creek. Eleven fish families were tested for suitability as fish hosts in the laboratory, but only the following 7 species served as hosts: bluehead chub (N. leptocephalus), rosyside dace (C. funduloides), satinfin shiner (N. analostanus), rosefin shiner (N. ardens), central stoneroller (Campostoma anomalum), blacknose dace (Rhinichthys atratulus), and mountain redbelly dace (Phoxinus oreas).
Juvenile P. collina, fed a mixture of three green algae species in chambers with and without silt, lived 50 days. Juveniles in silt grew significantly faster than those not in silt after 18 days. Age and growth characteristics of adults were obtained by thin-sectioning valves collected in muskrat middens in Dicks and Johns creeks, Virginia. Ages ranged between 3 and 19 yr, and a strong year class was identified at age 11. Mean annual mortality rate was calculated to be 9.8%.
As predicted by the von Bertalanffy growth equation, P. collina reaches a maximum length of 74.4 mm, and annual growth increments decrease from 7.04 mm/yr (age 1) to 0.88 mm/yr (age 19).
As judged by qualitative surveys, current populations of P. collina in Craig Creek, Johns Creek, and the South Fork Potts Creek appear to be self-sustaining. Populations in Catawba and Patterson creeks appear to be small and are probably in jeopardy of being extirpated. The status of the James spinymussel in Dicks Creek, Rocky Run, and Pedlar and Mechums rivers is unknown since these streams were not extensively surveyed.
Master of Science

Hogan, John Patrick. "Mineralogical, chemical and isotopic diversity in plutonic rock suites from the Coastal Maine Magmatic Province:the role of source region heterogeneity, tectonic setting and magmatic processes." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39074.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation represents an investigation of the mid-Paleozoic tectono-thermal and kinematic evolution of the crust in eastern coastal Maine as recorded by the plutonic rocks of this region. The first chapter describes the plutonic rocks of the Coastal Maine Magmatic Province. A tectonic model is developed in which late Ordovician-Silurian bimodal magmatism is interpreted to reflect crustal melting as a result of intraplating of mantle melts at high crustal levels during a period of tension. Large scale melting of lower crustal source regions, represented by voluminous intrusion of Devonian granites, reflects a period of transpression during which upwelling mantle melts were confined to the base of the crust. The diversity of granitic plutons reflects changes in the mineral assemblages present during partial melting, and in some instances, modification as a result of mixing/mingling with mantle melts. The second chapter examines the effect of accessory minerals on the initial Pb isotopic signature of anatectic granites. Their initial Pb isotopic composition reflects (a) the age, type, modal distribution, and heterogeneity in the initial U and Th content of the accessory phase(s) present in the source, (b) variation in melt composition and temperature during partial melting, (c) the fraction of the source melted, and (d) the extent to which the melt is homogenized prior to crystallization. It is shown that granitic plutons derived by crustal anatexis of a common source material are not required to have similar initial lead isotopic compositions. The third chapter presents the results of a Pb isotopic investigation of selected plutonic rocks from the Coastal Maine MagmaticProvince. This study was designed to test and refine petrogenetic models presented in Chapter 1. The Pb isotopic signature of the granitic plutons reveals the presence of two lithologically heterogeneous source regions beneath the Avalon Composite Terrane. The upper crustal source region has an mean V-Pb age of -2.0 Ga and the high 207Pb/204Pb-206Pb/204Pb characteristic of Avalonian crust. The lower crustal source region has an average U-Pb age of -1.3 Ga and lower 207Pb/204Pb. This source region may represent either the autochthonous basement to the Avalon platform or the eastern extension of the basement to the Gander Terrane of central Maine.
Ph. D.

Abstract:
The author of this report has long been interested in the process of developing software. Commonly referred to as "software engineering", the definition and standardization of the process has been a subject of concern throughout the software industry. As early as 1972, Frederick P. Brooks likened large system programming efforts to the La Brea Tar Pits; the muck, mire and tar of software development delays and cost overruns eventually defeating even the most skillful and experienced developers. [1] This report is intended to provide another stepping stone through the tar.
The author was fortunate to be provided the opportunity to develop two similar software projects, in like hardware environments, using different development approaches. The first project was developed using an Evolutionary Development approach, the later system utilized the current government standard, DOD-STD-2167A. This report outlines the lessons learned in applying these development approaches.
This report does not intend to criticize either the Evolutionary Development or DOD-STD-2167A approaches to developing software. Rather this analysis seeks to identify factors and issues which software developers should consider in implementing either of these approaches.
Master of Science

Hoff, Kristen G. "Lot-sizing in the wood furniture industry." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42123.

Abstract:
We consider the problem of scheduling production in a wood furniture plant. In particular, we consider the problem of selecting orders from various types of furniture products and determining their lot-sizes for production when there are sequence dependent setup times involved in the production of these items. This is termed the aggregate scheduling problem. In addition, we consider the problem of scheduling work at various production facilities in the presence of capacity constraints once the items for production and their quantities are selected. This is termed the detailed scheduling problem. The aggregate scheduling problem is formulated as a mixed integer program and solved using a dynamic programming procedure. The detailed scheduling program is a linear program and is solved using a canned linear programming package. In order to understand the state-of-the-art in the furniture industry, various furniture plants in Southwest Virginia were visited and a national survey was conducted. The results are summarized. The survey emphasized the problem addressed in this research. In order to understand the decision points better in the furniture manufacturing process, the IDEF (ICAM definition) procedure is used to describe the furniture manufacturing process. The methodology developed is applied to a real-life problem and the results are summarized.
Master of Science

Abstract:
This study develops and evaluates a theoretical model based on social learning, conflict, and feminist perspectives to explain teenage sibling physical violence and psychological abuse. Using regression analysis and data from 796 young adults, considerable support is found for all three theoretical approaches and suggests an integrated model best predicts acts of violence and abuse among siblings. For physical violence, males and brothers had significantly higher rates. Spousal verbal conflict, patriarchal attitudes towards the distribution of chores among siblings, attitudes approving of the use of physical force during an argument, and sibling verbal conflict were strongly related to sibling violence. For psychological abuse, neither gender nor sibling pair was significant. The most important predictors for abuse were a close maternal relationship, favoritism, parents yelling, sharing property I psychological stress, patriarchal attitudes towards chores, approval of violence, and sibling verbal conflict. The model explains considerably more of the variance in teenage sibling psychological abuse than physical violence, 42 percent and 32 percent respectively. Finally, the study provides directions for future research on sibling violence and abuse.
Ph. D.
