Lee, Gyou-Bong. "A study of the computation and convergence behavior of eigenvalue bounds for self-adjoint operators." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39916.

Full text
Abstract:
The convergence rates for the method of Weinstein and a variant method of Aronszajn known as "truncation including the remainder" are derived in terms of the containment gaps between exact and approximating subspaces, using analytical techniques that arise in part in the convergence analysis of finite element methods for differential eigenvalue problems. An example of a one dimensional Schrodinger operator with a potential is presented which arises in quantum mechanics. Examples using the recent eigenvector-free (EVF) method of Beattie and Goerisch are considered. Since the EVF method uses finite element trial functions as approximating vectors, it produces sparse and well-structured coefficient matrices. For these large-order sparse matrix eigenvalue problems, we adapt a spectral transformation Lanczos algorithm for finding a few wanted eigenvalues. For a few particular examples of vibration in beams and plates, convergence behavior is experimentally evaluated.<br>Ph. D.

Lee, Hoonja. "A new representation for binary or categorical-valued time series data in the frequency domain." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/38566.

Full text
Abstract:
The classical Fourier analysis of time series data can be used to detect periodic trends that are of sinusoidal shape. However, this analysis can be misleading when time series trends are not sinusoidal. When the time series process of interest is binary or categorical-valued data, it might be more reasonable that the time process be represented by a square or rectangular form of functions instead of sinusoidal functions. The WalshFourier analysis takes this approach using a square form of functions. The Walsh-Fourier analysis is based on the Walsh functions. The Walsh functions are a square form of functions that take on only two values + 1 and -1. But, unlike sinusoidals, the Walsh functions are not periodic. Harmuth (1969) introduced the term sequency to describe generalized frequency to identify functions that are not periodic, such as Walsh functions. The term sequency is interpreted as the nun1ber of zero crossings or sign changes per unit time. While the Walsh-Fourier analysis is reasonable in theory for binary or categorical-valued time series data, the interpretation of sequency is often difficult. In this dissertation, using a sequence of periodic functions, we develop the theory and method that can be applied to binary or categorical-valued data where patterns more naturally follow a rectangular shape. The theory parallels the Fourier theory and leads to a "Fourier-like" data transform that is specifically suited to the identification of rectangular trends.<br>Ph. D.

Li, Min-Chung. "Thermoplastic composite consolidation." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40036.

Full text
Abstract:
Fabrication of high-quality composites from thennoplastic prepregs requires careful selection of the processing cycles so that intimate contact at the ply interfaces is achieved resulting in the formation of strong interply bonds and the process-induced residual stress is minimized to ensure superior mechanical performance. The void formation and the consolidation mechanism were studied experimentally. A refined model was developed to relate the processing parameters of pressure, temperature and time to the interply intimate contact of thermoplastic composites. The model was developed by integrating a prepreg surface topology characterization with a resin flow analysis. Both unidirectional and cross-ply lay-ups were modeled. Two-ply unidirectional laminae fabricated from graphite-polysulfone and graphite-PEEK prepregs and [0/90/0]T laminates were consolidated using different processing cycles. Optical microscopy and scanning acoustic microscopy were used to obtain the degree of intimate contact data. Agreement between the measured and calculated degree of intimate contact was good. A finite element model was developed to analyze residual stresses in thermoplastic composites by combining a plane-strain elasticity analysis and a temperature-dependent matrix properties. The residual stress model takes into account the mismatch of the thermal expansion coefficients and the crystallization shrinkage of the matrix. [O₁₀/90₆]T graphite-PEEK laminates were manufactured at different cooling rates to verify the model. The induced residual thermal defonnations were measured by a shadow moire system. The model accurately estimated the out-of-plane displacement of the non-symmetrical laminates.<br>Ph. D.

Leavitt, Trenda Carter. "Alternative drainageway design: a case study analysis." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44968.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>Numerous scholars are outlining design approaches to reweave natural and cultural landscapes together to restore and enhance the quality of both. Typically they identify the following exigent issues within the contemporary landscape which need solving: fragmented, dysfunctional ecosystems;1 low wildlife and plant diversity; resource consumptive design; divorce of the human/cultural environment from natural ecosystems; infrequent human interaction with the ecosystem; and lost landscape legibility and regional identity. Strategies to solve these issues are varied, however most strategies include the following: reestablish ecosystem balance and function; increase wildlife and plant diversity; enhance and promote regional identity and landscape legibility; reconnect human landscapes with ecosystems; promote human interaction with the ecosystem; use nature as a design model; and redefine aesthetics. Many writers suggest combining identified components within a single design scheme for successful amelioration of cultural and ecosystem damage.</p> <p> Alternative drainageway design projects are typically concerned with ecosystem restoration, enhancement of regional identity features, and civic space design within public landscapes. As such, this design genre offers an idea] venue to actualize criteria outlined by scholars: restore ecosystem health, reconnect people to ecosystems, and promote regional identity. However many alternative drainageway design projects address only ecosystem restoration and ignore public space, while others address public space to the detriment of ecological balance. The potential of alternative drainageway design to address multiple issues at once is tremendous, yet are there existing projects which match demands set forth by scholars?</p> <p> This thesis seeks to answer that question by critical evaluation of a series of built alternative drainageway design projects. Criteria identified by scholars in the literature review are used as a framework to critically analyze and topically discuss selected projects. Because the same set of criteria is shared by reputed scholars, the derived criteria serve as a pertinent benchmark to evaluate the projects. Discussion and comparative analysis illustrates whether the projects embody identified criteria and identify if any projects meet rigorous multiple demands framed by scholars. By critically analyzing and identifying successful, multiple-solution projects, this thesis provides germane information to develop a foundation for twenty-first century drainageway design. The derived framework offers clear stepping stones for designers, based upon current theory and built projects, to effectively address pressing cultural and environmental issues of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century landscape. The derived framework thus forwards a methodology to re-weave natural and cultural landscapes together for the benefit both.</p><br>Master of Landscape Architecture

Letsinger, William C. II. "Optimal one and two-stage designs for the logistic regression model." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37354.

Full text
Abstract:
Binary response data is often modeled using the logistic regression model, a well known nonlinear model. Designing an optimal experiment for this nonlinear situation poses some problems not encountered with a linear model. The application of several optimality design criteria to the logistic regression model is explored, and many resulting optimal designs are given. The implementation of these optimal designs requires the parameters of the model to be known. However, the model parameters are not known. If they were, there would be no need to design an experiment. Consequently the parameters must be estimated prior to implementing a design. Standard one-stage optimal designs are quite sensitive to parameter misspecification and are therefore unsatisfactory in practice. A two-stage Bayesian design procedure is developed which effectively deals with poor parameter knowledge while maintaining high efficiency. The first stage makes use of Bayesian design as well as Bayesian estimation in order to cope with parameter misspecification. Using the parameter estimates from the first stage, the second stage conditionally optimizes a chosen design optimality criterion. Asymptotically, the two-stage design procedure is considerably more efficient than the one-stage design when the parameters are misspecified and only slightly less efficient when the parameters are known. The superiority of the two-stage procedure over the one-stage is even more evident for small samples.<br>Ph. D.

Lee, Joosik. "High resolution interferometric measurements of residual strains in composites." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39415.

Full text
Abstract:
As composites have been more widely accepted as structural materials, residual stresses in them have become a more serious issue. Various experimental methods have been developed and used to measure residual strains in different kinds and shapes of materials. The anisotropic and heterogeneous nature of composites and the complexity of residual stresses, however, pose limitations on current techniques. Those techniques lack the sensitivity or spatial resolution that is required for the measurement of local deformation of composites on a ply·by-ply basis, or give point-by-point and averaged information. Also they are incapable of resolving the complexity of combined effect of different residual stress components. I n order to measure residual strains more effectively, a new method of measuring then1 is required. Moire interferometry combined with the cut-and-sectioning method has been developed for effective measurement of residual strains in fiber-reinforced composites. This optical technique provided the capability of studying separately the effect of each component of residual stresses. It also allowed the determination of high-sensitivity full-field deformation information. This approach was applied to thick composite cylinders for measuring residual strains. The results showed a strong influence of curing procedure on residual stresses. Also, in order to determine residual strains on a within-the-ply basis, a new high-resolution data reduction procedure has been developed. This procedure enhanced the resolution of the existing data reduction technique without losing qualitative information. The combination of both aforementioned techniques provided an effective tool for measuring residual strains of composite materials. The technique is illustrated in an investigation of the effect of stacking sequence on residual strains in flat composite panels.<br>Ph. D.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>An experimental investigation was conducted to develop a laboratory technique for the nondestructive evaluation of reinforced concrete. The methodologies were developed with the intent of eventual field implementation to determine the feasibility of utilizing infrared thermography to inspect substructural elements of concrete bridges.</p> <p> Several specimen configurations were fabricated for thermographic inspection. A number of tests were performed on a variety of concrete specimens to determine the implementation parameters of the technique. The necessity of utilizing artificial heating methods for thermal input prior to inspection was evaluated.</p> <p> The present study suggests that infrared thermography cannot be applied to substructural elements of bridges in a noncontact fashion. Internal thermal gradients produced by diurnal temperature fluctuation generally are not sufficient to produce the variations in surface temperature patterns necessary for thermographically detecting nonvisual subsurface defects. Rather, both the envelopment and artificial heating of the substructural element is required prior to thermographic inspection.</p><br>Master of Science

Abstract:
The author of this report has long been interested in the process of developing software. Commonly referred to as "software engineering", the definition and standardization of the process has been a subject of concern throughout the software industry. As early as 1972, Frederick P. Brooks likened large system programming efforts to the La Brea Tar Pits; the muck, mire and tar of software development delays and cost overruns eventually defeating even the most skillful and experienced developers. [1] This report is intended to provide another stepping stone through the tar. <p>The author was fortunate to be provided the opportunity to develop two similar software projects, in like hardware environments, using different development approaches. The first project was developed using an Evolutionary Development approach, the later system utilized the current government standard, DOD-STD-2167A. This report outlines the lessons learned in applying these development approaches. <p>This report does not intend to criticize either the Evolutionary Development or DOD-STD-2167A approaches to developing software. Rather this analysis seeks to identify factors and issues which software developers should consider in implementing either of these approaches.<br>Master of Science

Lee, Myoungwha Choi. "Cross-cultural investigation of the relationship between personal values and hotel selection criteria." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40032.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study investigated the potential of personal values to segment business traveler markets in the hospitality industry. The study was conducted both in the U.S. and Korea. Mail surveys were sent to a random sample of one-thousand business travelers in each country. Two hypotheses were tested to examine the relationship between personal values and hotel choice criteria, and two other hypotheses were tested regarding cultural differences of personal value structures and hotel choice criteria. In the U.S. sample, two major value groups were identified with distinct hotel choice criteria whereas three value groups were found in the Korean sample. In the both samples, respondents' value structures appeared to be related to the importance of hotel choice criteria. Consumer groups with homogeneous value structures seemed to have similar needs and wants regarding hotel services. The influence of personal values on hotel choice criteria was identified across cultures. However, the specific value-to-choice criteria relationship appeared to be culture dependent, preventing generalization of value-choice criteria relationships across cultures. Results revealed considerable cross-cultural differences relative to consumers' value structures and hotel choice criteria. Findings of the present study suggested that personal values hold potential for market segmentation in the hotel industry both in the domestic and international market. Several implications regarding existing consumer behavior theory and application to marketing management practices in the hospitality industry were investigated.<br>Ph. D.

Lee, Jaewoo. "Efficient inverse methods for supersonic and hypersonic body design, with low wave drag analysis." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37406.

Full text
Abstract:
With the renewed interest in the supersonic and hypersonic flight vehicles, new inverse Euler methods are developed in these flow regimes where a space marching numerical technique is valid. In order to get a general understanding for the specification of target pressure distributions, a study of minimum drag body shapes was conducted over a Mach number range from 3 to 12. Numerical results show that the power law bodies result in low drag shapes, where the n=.69 (l/d = 3) or n=.70 (l/d = 5) shapes have lower drag than the previous theoretical results (n=.75 or n=.66 depending on the particular form of the theory). To validate the results, a numerical analysis was made including viscous effects and the effect of gas model. From a detailed numerical examination for the nose regions of the minimum drag bodies, aerodynamic bluntness and sharpness are newly defined. Numerous surface pressure-body geometry rules are examined to obtain an inverse procedure which is robust, yet demonstrates fast convergence. Each rule is analyzed and examined numerically within the inverse calculation routine for supersonic (M∞ = 3) and hypersonic (M∞ = 6.28) speeds. Based on this analysis, an inverse method for fully three dimensional supersonic and hypersonic bodies is developed using the Euler equations. The method is designed to be easily incorporated into existing analysis codes, and provides the aerodynamic designer with a powerful tool for design of aerodynamic shapes of arbitrary cross section. These shapes can correspond to either "wing like" pressure distributions or to "body like" pressure distributions. Examples are presented illustrating the method for a non-axisymmetric fuselage type pressure distribution and a cambered wing type application. The method performs equally well for both nonlifting and lifting cases. For the three dimensional inverse procedure, the inverse solution existence and uniqueness problem are discussed. Sample calculations demonstrating this problem are also presented.<br>Ph. D.
