Schwarzlaff, Sabine S. "Flour quality and dough stickiness of soft red winter wheat lines with and without 1B/1R translocations." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39604.

Full text
Abstract:
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the major cereals of the world. Farmers must produce wheat with good yield and quality to meet the high demands for wheat flour. To reduce disease and increase wheat yield, cultivars have been developed by replacing the short arm of chromosome 1B of wheat with the short arm of the 1R chromosome from rye (Secale cereale L.). This wheat-rye translocation, 1B/1R, carries linked genes which makes these wheat cultivars more disease resistant and higher yielding. Unfortunately, the 1B/1R translocation in hard wheats has been shown to produce undesirable characteristics such as dough stickiness and reduced mixing tolerance. Many promising wheat lines have been developed by crossbreeding 1B/1R Jines with soft wheat in hopes of producing a 1B/1R soft wheat of good quality for use in soft wheat products. The purpose of this research was to determine the end use quality of flours from soft red winter wheats possessing 1B/ 1R. Fourteen soft wheat varieties (7 without 1 B/1 R and 7 with 1B/lR) grown in two Virginia locations, Warsaw and Blacksburg, were assessed for flour quality and dough stickiness. Four pairs of the experimental wheats were sister lines. Flour quality was evaluated by means of protein content, farinograph analysis, cookie spread and protein analysis. Dough stickiness was measured using the "Schwarzlaff-Shephard Dough Stripping Method", specially designed for this study. It is the first method of its kind to measure dough stickiness quantitatively. Results indicated that the 1B/1R translocation, in general, had no adverse effect on flour quality and dough stickiness of the experimental wheats and even improved mixing tolerance and stability of the wheat flour doughs. The results of the study indicate that flours of 1B/lR wheats can be used in commercial soft wheat bakery formulas.
Ph. D.

Schuler, Paul Joseph. "Polymer dose prediction for sludge dewatering with a belt filter press." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42227.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was undertaken to examine the polymer mixing requirements for sludge dewatering with a belt filter press. This involved correlating full-scale field studies to small scale laboratory testing. Bench testing involved the use of a high-speed mixer and two sludge dewatering response tests: the capillary suction time test and the time-to filter test. Full-scale testing measured the belt press response to belt speed, sludge throughput, and polymer dose. Data indicated that the conditioning and dewatering scheme of the three belt filter presses was a low shear, low total mixing energy operation. The Gt, or total mixing energy, of these operations was in the range of 8,000-12,000. Optimal dose predicted by the bench-scale testing correlated well to the optimal dose for maximum cake solids coming off the belt filter press. Also, the amount of water removed from the sludge with the belt press was largely a function of the type of solids present in the sludge and less of a function of the number of rollers or residence time in the press.
Master of Science

Abstract:
Working as an architect means being able to see the main issues of a design, examining with objectivity the possible solutions and finally grasp the technical means necessary to accomplish the project. I think that it is important for an architect to be involved in the entire course of a project, since the process of "building" is a simultaneous rather than a sequential one. My architectural education and my work experience as an intern in architecture firms in Germany prepared me well for practice. It covered many technical issues and equipped me with the fundamentals of architectural assembly. Graduate education in the United States provided me with the academic environment to investigate my interests more deeply and to discover my personal strengths. It gave me the opportunity to formulate a mature and coherent position in my thinking and making. I still cannot explain everything intellectually, since many ideas are intuitively derived or spring from my sub-consciousness. But my theoretical and practical background combined with sincere feedback from my classmates and committee members provided the necessary climate to develop and elaborate architectural ideas. I see life as a continuous course of learning, where personal growth not only strengthens my confidence, but also contributes to the discipline of architecture and to society at large. An architect has a special responsibility towards society as he/she translates the spirit of time into the built cultural environment.
Master of Architecture

Brendlinger, Robert Lee. "Toxicity analysis of coal mining industry NPDES discharges in Southwest Virginia." Master's thesis, Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40599.

Full text
Abstract:
Industrial toxicity has become a major environmental subject over the past decade. Although much research and data have been collected and published for the manufacturing type industries, minimal data is currently available concerning the possible toxics that may be associated with coal mining industry NPDES discharges. Thus, in this report, an environmental toxicity assessment with respective data shall be presented on the three major constituent sectors of the coal mining industry in Southwest Virginia of which includes mines, preparation plants and refuse facilities. The mines category shall include both surface and underground facilities. The preparation plants sector will cover the traditional railroad siding loadout type facilities, along with the modern clean coal processing preparation plants. Valley and side fill configuration, coarse and combined refuse fills and coal refuse impoundments shall be presented in the refuse facility categorization. Reference source data and specific information from a Virginia Coal Association Taxies Monitoring Program study are presented to show that the effects of toxicity in the coal mining associated NPDES effluents are minimal and not a serious problem. The conclusions of this report shall show that through enforcement of better management practices within the coal industry in Southwest Virginia that toxicity can be virtually eliminated in NPDES outfalls.
Master of Science

Abstract:
Several methods have been developed to determine the cyclic oligomer content in PET. Isolation procedures can be classified as those involving extraction, such as with solvents like chloroform, dioxane, and xylene, and those involving dissolution followed by precipitation in solvents like dimethylformamide and 1-methylnaphthalene. The amount of cyclic oligomer obtained is largely dependent upon the method used, as well as the type, drawing, and thermal history of the PET used.Various methods for separation of cyclic oligomers have also been developed using GPC and thin-layer chromatography.
Master of Science

Full text
Abstract:

This research addresses a two-dimensional stock cutting problem encountered at the New River Valley Workshop (NRV), Inc. in Radford, VA. This research considers recent literature on two-dimensional stock cutting techniques, pattern generating methods, solution approaches, and practical problem considerations in addressing the NRV cutting problem. Linear Programming analysis is applied to NRV's two-dimensional cutting problem. A computer-based implementation of the LP solution methodology is developed and used to solve NRV cutting problems. Test data and sample problems are used to demonstrate the efficiency, speed and accuracy of the computer-based system. Solution results from test data are compared to current NRV performance, illustrating the significant improvements in solution time and stock utilization that can be attained through the use of LP techniques and this computer-based implementation.
Master of Science

Full text
Abstract:
A medical expert system for predicting qualitative pharmacodynamic interactions of the cardiovascular system is described. TLCM traces causal paths of drug action through up to three levels of drug action. The three levels which are molecular/receptor level, physiological level and clinical level provide both deep and shallow reasoning in order to overcome the problem of unknowns in medical expert systems. Sparsity of information in pharmacology results from necessity of using non-invasive techniques for monitoring drug effects in the human subject and difficulty in isolating effect from feedback. The qualitative nature of TLCM is another attempt to deal with incomplete information in pharmacology.
Master of Science
