Lloyd, Laura E. "The making of place and occasion: art school and museum in Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53446.

Abstract:
The increasing dominance of technology in everyday life has created a challenge to the role Fine Arts plays in today’s society. The struggle of the Fine Arts to retain and strengthen its role in the culture of a technologically-driven society presented a unique opportunity to explore the reuniting of two major Fine Arts realms the Art School and Museum. The challenge of this thesis was to unite the School and Museum in such a way as to strengthen the part Fine Arts has in today’s culture. Over time art schools and museums have become separated both physically and psychologically. They are treated as two individual building types in architecture, each with its own functional goals. By synthesizing the two building types, the opportunity is created to both view art and learn the processes by which it is created. The architecture of the school/museum seeks to celebrate these two activities: the school as "Place" where creation of the art occurs, the museum representing "Occasion" - the celebration of the art. The ability for both activities to occur within the same building encourages understanding of the Fine Arts by exposing people to its two realms. Through such encouragement, as presented by the building’s architecture, society may rediscover the important role the Fine Arts have in everyday life and in its cultural legacy.
Master of Architecture

There have been many predictions about what the future could be. Films such as, “1984”, “Brazil”, and “Blade Runner” as well as books like William Gibson’s fantasy novel “Neuromancer” are but a few examples of such vision. Unfortunately, all have envisioned the future as a cold bleak place where architecture is but a machine and lost people live in sterile environments with no contact with the outside world. Is this what we really believe the future to be? Are we victims of technology of do we control our own fate?
Master of Architecture

Ling, Carol Carlson. "Weight gain during pregnancy: the characteristics of women who experience excess weight gain." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42134.

Full text
Abstract:

Weight gain during pregnancy, relationships among body image, body weight standards, and attitudes toward weight gain were investigated. Weight gain recommendations, based on preconceptional weight status (PCWS) reflected current practices in prenatal care at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, VA, and provided a basis on which to categorize weight gain as inadequate, appropriate, and excess. Women who experienced excess weight gain (EWG) were compared to those who experienced appropriate weight gain (AWG) or inadequate weight gain (IWG) to identify their characteristics. Of the 138 women studied, 54 experienced EWG. Weight gain recommendations for overweight women were similar to those for normal weight women, 20-25% PCW. Obese women who lost weight or gained less than 15 pounds were identified with the inadequate weight gain group.

Master of Science

Lin, Tingdong. "Surface and interphase studies of the adhesion of a siloxane- modified-polyimide coating on metals." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42154.

Full text
Abstract:

This research focused on the surface modification and interfacial profile studies of a siloxane modified polyimide, BDS [BTDA (3,3\4.4'~ benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride) ~ DDS (3.3'~diaminodiphenyl sulfone) - PSX (polydimethylsiloxane) copolymer], used as a coating material. The BDS coating surface can be modified by pretreatment in an alkaline solution. This surface pretreatment etched away the top siloxane surface layer, activated the surface by exposing and creating polar functional groups, particularly carboxylic acid groups, and roughened the surface. These changes on the coating surface significantly improved the wettability and the strength of the bond between the coating surface and a polar adhesive. Interfacial composition profiles were obtained from angular dependent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. Two kinds of interphases were found near the bond line of the coating/metal substrate. One was a component gradient interphase which was formed by component segregation of the BDS copolymer. The component gradient was different on different metal oxide surfaces with the siloxane interfacial excess in the order of AI > Ti > Zn. The relative acidities of the metal oxide surfaces were characterized by poly(vinyl chloride) adsorption tests which were quantified by XPS measurements. The relative acidities were found in the order of AI > Ti > Zn. Therefore, the cause for the BDS component segregation was suggested to be the influence of acid·base interactions between components of the BDS copolymer and the metal surface oxides. The other kind of interphase was a polymer·metal oxide mixture interphase which formed on penetration of the BDS copolymer solution into porous aluminum surfaces.

Master of Science

Hirschman, Edward. "Comprehensive forecasting of software integrity in C3I systems." Master's thesis, Virginia Tech, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42019.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to forecast the incidence of failures to be encountered by a software package for C3I systems over and throughout its life cycle. It will be assumed that a data base of software previously developed for C3I systems will be used to forecast the software integrity of a software package under initial development. "Software integrity" is defined as a projection of the stream of failures that will be experienced by the new software. The failure history of the mature C3I systems software will be statistically quantified parametrically and by experimental design techniques (ANOVA) to gather information which will be used to forecast what C3I software with similar characteristics--length, language, debugging effort, etc.--will experience.
Then, as the new C3I system software matures, statistical techniques for software systems engineering will be addressed for testing appropriateness of the initial projections; and eventually the new software will be parametrically modeled on its own merits to forecast the failures to be encountered over the remainder of its life cycle.
Lastly, the data base history of software for mature C3I systems software will be updated and amended as needed to facilitate reliable forecasting of software integrity for a new round of C3I systems software.
The attention to C3I implied by the title of the project will reflect itself in the classes of software considered and development conditions, schedules and complexities of the software.
Master of Science

Jones, S. J. "The application of the systems engineering process to the development of a global communications system using portable phones." Master's thesis, Virginia Tech, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/46338.

Abstract:
Telecommunications capabilities have increased dramatically in recent years. Especially significant is the introduction and tremendous growth of mobile telephone communications. Given the limitations of current mobile phone communications and the need for truly global person-to- person capabilities, an enhanced satellite-based system is presented as a feasible means to link portable telephones throughout the world.
Using systems engineering and the systems approach, the choice of using a satellite system vice other methods is made from a feasibility analysis. Following this choice, operational requirements are established. Based upon these requirements, two different satellite constellations are presented for consideration: a three-satellite geosynchronous constellation and a multi-satellite low earth orbiting (LEO) constellatIon. The advantages and disadvantages of each configuration are explored and the LEO constellation is chosen. Throughout the paper, systems engineering and its methodologies are used to illustrate how such a system might be developed using the systems approach.
Master of Engineering

Liu, Zheng-Xian. "Antioxidant activity of Mn-salophen complex and its effects on antioxidant enzymes in Escherichia coli." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40046.

Full text
Abstract:
Mn-salophen complex with superoxide-scavenging activity was prepared from manganese(III) acetate dihydrate and salophen in ethanol. Visible absorption spectrum of the red-brown solution exhibited a broad absorption band at 430 - 450 nm with two shoulders between 500 and 600 nm which were absent with either salophen or manganic acetate alone. Titration of salophen with manganese(III) was consistent with a 1:1 Mn to salophen stoichiometry of the complex based on changes in the absorbance at 500 nm or of superoxide scavenging activity. The SOD-like activity of the complex in the xanthine-xanthine oxidase/cytochrome c assay was 1450 units/mg salophen. The SOD activity of the complex was suppressed 50% in the presence of EDTA (1 mM), but was not altered in the presence of bovine serum albumin (1 mg/ml) or crude protein extract of E. coli QC779 sodA sodB (1 mg/ml). E. coli QC779 sodA sodB grew scantily after an 8 hour lag phase in aerobic M63 glucose minimal medium.
Ph. Lin, Weiqing. "Buckling and postbuckling of flat and curved laminated composite panels under thermomechanical loadings incorporating non-classical effects." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40240.

Full text
Abstract:
Two structural models which can be used to predict the buckling, post buckling and vibration behavior of flat and curved composite panels under thermomechanical loadings are developed in this work. Both models are based on higher-order transverse shear deformation theories of shallow shells that include the effects of geometric nonlinearities and initial geometric imperfections. Within the first model (Model I), the kinematic continuity at the contact surfaces between the contiguous layers and the free shear traction condition on the outer bounding surfaces are satisfied, whereas in the second model (Model II), in addition to these conditions, the static interlaminae continuity requirement is also fulfilled. Based on the two models, results which cover a variety of problems concerning the postbuckling behaviors of flat and curved composite panels are obtained and displayed. These problems include: i) buckling and postbuckling behavior of flat and curved laminated structures subjected to mechanical and thermal loadings; ii)frequency-load/temperature interaction in laminated structures in both pre-buckling and post buckling range; iii) the influence of a linear/nonlinear elastic foundation on static and dynamic post buckling behavior of flat/curved laminated structures exposed to mechanical and temperature fields; iv) implication of edge constraints upon the temperature/load carrying capacity and frequencyload/ temperature interaction of flat/curved structures; v) elaboration of a number of methodologies enabling one to attenuate the intensity of the snap-through buckling and even to suppress it as well as of appropriate ways enabling one to enhance the load/temperature carrying capacity of structures.
Ph. Abstract:
This research explores the meaning and relationship of the constructs of effectiveness, performance, and motivation among teams in a high performance manufacturing setting. Effectiveness is defined as actual outcomes; performance is characterized as those types of behaviors required of teams to achieve those outcomes. Motivation at the team level of analysis is conceived as collective efficacy -- the members' confidence in their team's ability to perform. Two types of antecedents to collective efficacy are explored -- prior success and compositional characteristics of the teams.
Ph. D.

Lin, Wenhsyong. "An object-oriented software development environment for geometric modeling in intelligent computer aided design." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40409.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of intelligent CAD systems to assist a designer in automating the design process has been discussed for years. It has been recognized that knowledge engineering techniques and the study of design theory can provide certain solutions to this approach. A major issue in developing intelligent CAD systems for geometric modeling is the integration of the design geometry with the representation of the design constraints. Current commercial computer aided design (CAD) systems are used primarily for recording the results of the design process. Using conventional CAD systems, a design engineer either must create the geometry of the design object with precise coordinates and dimensions, or start his design from an existing geometry of a previous design. It is difficult to propagate a dimensional change throughout an entire model -- especially solid models. This rigidity imposed by conventional CAD systems discourages a designer from exploring different approaches in creating a novel product.
Ph. D.
