Garcia, Sandrine L. "Analysis of a space experimental design for high-Tc superconductive thermal bridges." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42752.

Full text
Abstract:

Infrared sensor satellites are used to monitor the conditions in the earth's upper atmosphere. In these systems, the electronic links connecting the cryogenically cooled infrared detectors to the significantly warmer amplification electronics act as thermal bridges and, consequently, the mission lifetimes of the satellites are limited due to cryogenic evaporation. High-temperature superconductor (HTS) materials have been proposed by researchers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Langley's Research Center (NASA-LaRC) as an alternative to the currently used manganin wires for electrical connection. The potential for using HTS films as thermal bridges has provided the motivation for the design and the analysis of a spaceflight experiment to evaluate the performance of this superconductive technology in the space environment The initial efforts were focused on the preliminary design of the experimental system which allows for the quantitative comparison of superconductive leads with manganin leads, and on the thermal conduction modeling of the proposed system (Lee, 1994). Most of the HTS materials were indicated to be potential replacements for the manganin wiresc In the continuation of this multi-year research, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the sources of heat transfer on the thermal bridges that have been neglected in the preliminary conductive model and then to develop a methodology for the estimation of the thermal conductivities of the HTS thennal bridges in space.

The Joule heating created by the electrical current through the manganin wires was incorporated as a volumetric heat source into the manganin conductive model. The radiative heat source on the HTS thermal bridges was determined by performing a separate radiant interchange analysis within a high-Tc superconductor housing area. Both heat sources indicated no significant contribution on the cryogenic heat load, which validates the results obtained in the preliminary conduction model.

A methodology was presented for the estimation of the thermal conductivities of the individual HTS thermal bridge materials and the effective thermal conductivities of the composite HTS thermal bridges as functions of temperature. This methodology included a sensitivity analysis and the demonstration of the estimation procedure using simulated data with added random errors. The thermal conductivities could not be estimated as functions of temperature; thus the effective thermal conductivities of the HTS thermal bridges were analyzed as constants.

Master of Science

Garland, Jay L. "Effects of grazing by the oligochaete, Aeolosoma, on detrital and periphytic assemblages." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/41558.

Abstract:

The effects of grazing by the small oligochaete, Aeolosoma, on periphyton assemblages of different algal composition and on unconditioned detritus were examined. Natural water and periphyton inoculum were collected from a littoral environment and used to construct laboratory microcosms. Changes in algal community composition, microbial respiration, and structural indices (Chlorophyll a, protein, and carbohydrate) were measured in grazed and ungrazed cultures through time in 2 to 12 d experiments.

Grazed cultures after 10 to 12 d had dissimilar algal community compositions in both the early and late summer periphytic assemblages as measured by Pinkham and Pearson's Index of Similarity (B). Changes resulted from stimulation (Green coccoids, thin green filaments) and suppression (certain diatoms) of individual algal taxa, and not from the dramatic shifts in comunity composition and structure effected by macroinvertebrate grazing.

Master of Science

Garrison, Susan Elizabeth. "Effects of shade on the cultivated strawberry (Fragaria X anassa Duch.)." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42099.

Full text
Abstract:
Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to determine the effects of shade on photosynthetic, growth and yield responses of "Redchief" strawberries. Plants were exposed to 0 , 30 , 47 and 63 percent shade in the greenhouse. Net photosynthesis (Pn) as measured under the shade treatments demonstrated a curvilinear decrease. Pn as measured under saturating light levels of 790 μ-tmol· m-2 · s·1 began to decrease in plants grown under 30 percent or higher shade levels. Light saturation curves for leaves expanded in full sun and then transferred to shade treatments for seven days showed a decrease in Pn saturation rate and light saturation point at 63 percent shade. Saturation curves for leaves expanded under the shade treatments exhibited a decreasing trend in saturation rate and point at all shade levels. Heavy shade (63%) reduced leaf thickness and depth of the palisade cell layers. Individual leaf area was not affected by shade treatments. As percent shade increased, total plant dry weight decreased linearly as did specific leaf weight. Shade treatments of 0, 30, 63 or 95 percent were applied over field-grown plants either in the fall during flower bud initiation, or in the fall and spring, during flower bud initiation and spring vegetative growth. Berry number was reduced as percent shade increased. Plants shaded only in the fall had higher berry number than plants shaded both in the fall and spring. Berry weight was also reduced as percent shade increased. Sugar concentration, pH and titratable acidity were not affected by shade levels or time of shade application.
Master of Science

Galper, Daniel I. "Understanding the motivation to use anabolic steroids: an application of the theory of reasoned action." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/41941.

Full text
Abstract:

The nonmedical use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) is an emerging public health concern. Despite a recent call for AAS prevention by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (Lin & Erinoff, 1990), little theory-based research has been conducted on the etiology of AAS use. In the present study, the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) was used as a model for understanding and explaining the psychosocial factors which motivate weightlifters to use AAS.

One-hundred-three male weightlifters (mean age = 23.3 years, range 18-39) completed a survey that assessed past drug use (including past AAS use) and constructs relevant to the TRA: attitudes about personal AAS use, subjective norms regarding personal AAS use, and intentions to use AAS over the next year. In addition, perceived behavioral control was assessed and the TRA was compared to the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB).

Overall, seventeen (16.50/0) of participants reported the past use of AAS and nine (8.7%) reported the intention to use AAS at sometime over the next year. Multiple regression (MR) analyses revealed that respondents' attitudes (Beta = .72, D, < .001) towards personal AAS use significantly predicted AAS intentions and explained 55% of the variability in the intention to use AAS (i.e., R2 = .55). Further, when perceived behavioral control (PBC) was added to the model, both attitudes (Beta=.54, D,<.001) and PBC (Beta =-.37, D,<.001) were significant predictors of AAS intentions. With respect to other drug use behaviors, the past use of AAS was not significantly correlated with the use of alcohol, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, marijuana, or cocaine. Similar results were found for an adolescent sub-sample of 59 male weightlifters (Mean age = 19.9).

These results provided strong support for the TRA (TPB) as an accurate model for explaining male weightlifters' motivation (intentions) to use AAS. Implications for the primary prevention of AAS based on these models are discussed in detail.

Master of Science

Gaspar-Rolle, Maria Nelma Pinto. "Attachment of bacteria to teflon and buna-n-rubber gasket materials." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39818.

Full text
Abstract:
Surface analysis of buna-N-rubber and teflon was performed. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the topography of both materials and x-ray microanalysis identified the elemental chemical composition of the polymers. Teflon was primarily a smooth surface with random irregular spots, while buna-N-rubber had a very rough topography with "caverns" and crevices spread over the surface. The x-ray microanalysis showed that there are no impurities on the surface of teflon; however, calcium, silicone and sulfur were present on the surface of buna-N-rubber. Water contact angle measurements indicated that buna-N-rubber was a more hydrophobic surface than teflon. Qualitative analysis of the attachment of Pseudomonas fragi A TCC 4973, Listeria monocytogenes Scott A and Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778 to buna-N-rubber and teflon was assessed by scanning electron microscopy. These bacteria readily attached to both surfaces. Pseudomonas fragi attached after 2 hours in the presence of this microoorganism and Bacillus cereus and Listeria monocytogenes attached at 12 and 24 hours, respectively. Quantitative analysis of the attachment of Pseudomonas fragi to both surfaces as affected by various milk fat concentrations and temperature, and the availability of nutrients (different dilutions of skim milk, casein, casein and lactose, and whey and lactose) was conducted. Attachment was assessed by impedance microbiology. Milk fat content did not play a significant role in the process of attachment of this organism to either type of surfaces; however, significantly greater numbers attached to buna-N-rubber than to teflon. Overall bacteria attached in higher numbers to both surfaces when grown at 21°C, compared to bacteria grown at 4°C. For buna-N-rubber, bacteria attached in significantly higher numbers when the concentration of nutrients was minimal, while for teflon, the results were, in most cases, opposite to these.
Ph. D.

Gamalath, Sandhya Samarasinghe. "Long-term creep modeling of wood using time temperature superposition principle." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39411.

Full text
Abstract:
Long-term creep and recovery models (master curves) were developed from short-term data using the time temperature superposition principle (TTSP) for kiln-dried southern pine loaded in compression parallel-to-grain and exposed to constant environmental conditions (~70°F, ~9%EMC). Short-term accelerated creep (17 hour) and recovery (35 hour) data were collected for each specimen at a range of temperature (70°F-150°F) and constant moisture condition of 9%. The compressive strain was measured using bonded electrical resistance strain gages. For each specimen, the compliance curves for all the temperature levels were plotted against log-time on the same plot. The curve segments at successively higher temperature levels were shifted along the log-time axis with respect to the curve section at 70°F to construct a master curve for each specimen. The extrapolation of the developed master curves ranged from 0.23 to 6.4 years. The requirement that the shift factors below glass transition temperature follow Arrhenius formulation was satisfied by the empirical shift factors. The activation energy for creep and recovery of kiln-dried southern pine derived from the slope of the plot of horizontal shift factor and the inverse of the absolute temperature was 28 KCal/mole. Creep and recovery master curves were represented by power functions and the nonlinear regression analysis was used to estimate the model parameters. Linear regression models were developed to predict one parameter in creep and recovery models from Young's modulus. The other model parameter showed weak correlations with material properties; therefore, an average value was recommended. The validity of the master curves for predicting creep of wood exposed to normal interior environmental conditions in buildings was tested by conducting long-term (10 month) creep tests in a heated/cooled laboratory environment. The fluctuating test environmental conditions caused geometry changes in the surface of the wood specimens in addition to mechanosorptive creep leading to fluctuating long-term data. Therefore, a good agreement between the master curves and long-term data was not found. Creep behavior of shallow southern pine arches was studied to demonstrate the application of the finite element method, incorporating the long-term curves based on TISP, to predict creep in wood structures. Creep tests were conducted at various load levels applied at ambient environmental conditions for two months. One arch failed (i.e., snapped-through) nine days after the tests began indicating that creep can indeed cause instability failure in shallow structures. It was found that the supports in the arch test fixture deflected elastically; therefore, the arches were modeled as three pin structures with base pin joints supported by zero-length linear elastic springs. However, the elastic analysis results revealed the presence of other factors affecting the experimental response which complicated the modeling procedure. The creep analysis was performed using a finite element model incorporating the developed creep master curves; however, due to the complexity in the creep experimental apparatus, the numerical predictions were not validated experimentally.
Ph. Gauto, Raul. "The impact of tariffs and transport costs on Latin America's wood exports to the United States." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/51891.

Full text
Abstract:
Latin American exports of solid wood products to the United States have not been as significant as would be expected, considering the great resource base existent in that region. Several tariff and non-tariff barriers have inhibited Latin American exports to North America. Two of the most important barriers are tariffs and transportation costs. This study uses the effective protective rate approach and empirically estimates the level of effective protection afforded American producers of five solid wood products from Latin American imports by tariffs and transportation costs, and compares the relative importance of the two barriers, It also observes the behaviour of the protective structure relative to the degree of manufacturing of the solid wood products under study. The estimates indicate that effective rates of protection are considerable larger than corresponding nominal rates. In addition, effective protection provided by transportation costs are between 2.5 and 10 times more important than the effective protection provided by tariffs. Finally, the estimates show that effective tariff protection for solid wood products does not escalate with degree of manufacturing, in contraposicion to studies carried out by economists over a wider spectrum of industries. On the other hand, the effective protection provided by transportation cost declines with degree of manufacturing, favoring the exports of manufactured solid wood products as opposed to exports of raw material or semi—processed intermediate inputs.
Master of Science

Garrahan, Thomas Booth. "The market potential and economic feasibility of a wooden pallet bin leasing system." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45723.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of a bin leasing system represents an effort to use bins more extensively. In a leasing system one inventory of bins would be used by two‘or more annual users. System benefits would be lower per-use costs for the user and the opportunity for the lessor to make a profit. In order to establish a working data base of information, a mailed questionnaire was sent to 333 fruit and vegetable processors. The response rate on the survey was 45%. A typical bin is built of hardwood lumber, lasts about seven years, and costs an average of $36.53. Seventy-eight percent of the owners considered bin repair a problem, 85% thought bin transport was expensive, 96.5% agreed that bins were a significant investment. Overall, 66% considered bin leasing a viable option to ownership. Eastern North Carolina was chosen as the most promising leasing system location. The system will cater to cucumber/pepper processors and sweet potato packers. The method chosen to establish the system is to contract with one or more large companies to supply, on a lease basis, the required replacement bins for future years. A sample system was designed based on cost and revenue information received from area bin owners. Calculations yielded a net present value of $31,056.99 for a 15 year run of the system when using a discount rate of 12.5%. The effects of changes in key variables were analyzed. The most dramatic changes in NPV were due to changes in bin life and per-bin revenues.
Master of Science

Garvin, Erin G. "Stability-reliabilty and the relationship of an incremental protocol in determining peak VO2 in college-aged men and women on the StairMaster 2650 UE kayak ergometer." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44479.

Full text
Abstract:

Measuring V02peak is an important health assessment used to indicate cardiorespiratory fitness, prescribe exercise, and diagnose heart abnormalities (2,12). Utilizing the muscles of the upper body, the new StairMaster kayak ergometer is ideal for measuring V02peak on people with lower extremity disorders and those whose occupational or recreational activities rely primarily on the muscles of the upper body (16). Twenty-four healthy college-aged (17-31 years) males and females were screened, gave informed consent, and received orientation to experimental procedures prior to participation in the study. Subjects performed two maximal exercise bouts on the kayak incremental protocol and one on the treadmill incremental protocol. Pearson's r correlation estimated the stability-reliability coefficient of the kayak protocol to be 0.84.

Pearson's r correlation estimated the relationship of the kayak protocol to the treadmill protocol to be 0.69. Given performance on the kayak ergometer, the predictive equation for treadmill performance was Y = 11.2605 + 1.02748X (r = 0.48). Body mass index and forearm circumference were found to be adequate predictors of kayak performance using the equation 45.2 - 1.60 BMI + 1.03 Forearm (~ 0.49).

Although the kayak incremental protocol demonstrates adequate test-retest reliability for measuring V02peak, it has only a fair relationship to the gold standard of uphill treadmill running. The kayak incremental protocol, therefore, is generally best suited for those who, due to lower extremity complications, are unable to perform traditional modes of testing, or for those whose occupational or recreational activity is dominated by the upper body.

Master of Science
