Mecham, Sue Jewel. "Gas permeability of polyimide/polysiloxane block copolymers." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43136.

Full text
Abstract:
A series of perfectly alternating polyimide/ poly(dimethylsiloxane) microphase separated block copolymers ranging from 0-50 wgt. % poly(dimethylsiloxane) have been measured for permeability characteristics. The polyimide segment of the copolymers was based on oxydiphthalicdianhydride (ODPA) and 1,4-Bis(4-amino-1,1- dimethylbenzyl)benzene (Bis P). The polysiloxane was an aminopropyl terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane). Randomly segmented block copolymers of =20 wet. % poly(dimethylsiloxane) with different segment lengths were also studied, based on the same materials for the sake of comparison with the perfectly alternating versions of the same block copolymers. Permeability measurements were performed on tough, microphase separated, transparent films with O₂, N₂, CH₄, and CO₂ gases in that order. The effects of the chemical composition and block lengths on permeability coefficients and selectivity values were evaluated. The permeability of copolymer films to gases was found to be highly sensitive to the morphology of the copolymer. The morphology was found to be controlled by varying the amount and the segment length of each component and this allowed for fine control of the permeability characteristics. Conversely, the measurement of permeability characteristics can lead to more information about the morphology of complicated microphase separated block copolymers.<br>Master of Science

Meyer, Mary Kay. "A productivity analysis of the clinical dietitian as a health care team member in the service sector." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/71155.

Full text
Abstract:
The major purpose of this study was to analyze the productivity of the clinical dietitian in order to develop appropriate models for measurement of productivity of the clinical dietitian. Due to the lack of research on productivity in the service sector, a modified Delphi Technique was used to identify appropriate measures of input and output for the clinical dietitian. The information gathered from the Delphi Technique was used to develop a survey designed to measure the productivity of the clinical dietitian. Two hundred eighty-three participants responded to the survey. Five measures of productivity were developed. They were: (1) hours in direct patient care/total hours worked (2) hours in indirect patient care/ total hours worked (3) hours in nonpatient care/ total hours worked (4) hours spent in direct plus indiiect patient care/total hours worked and (5) the activity level in nonproductive activities. The independent variables used in this study were: (1) patient load of the clinical dietitian (2) years of experience of the clinical dietitian (3) the allocation of time to tasks performed by the clinical dietitian (4) consultation methods used by the clinical dietitian (5) size of the hospital (6) employment status of the clinical dietitian (7) mission of the hospital (8) percent occupancy of the hospital and <9> percent of the budget generated by Medicare patients. Results of the analyses showed that dietitians were spending a variety of time in the thirty-three identified activities. They had a high activity level in performing diet histories, individual diet instructions, performing nutritional assessments, and reviewing and recording in medical records. Tasks involving low levels of activity were taking anthopometric measurements, reading professional literature and attending professional conferences. To fully investigate the relationship between the measures of productivity (dependent variables) and the independent variables stepwise multiple linear regression in the SAS statistical program was used. Analyses revealed two models appropriate for measuring the productivity. These models involved nonpatient care and nonproductive activities. The development of these models overcame the difficulty discussed in the service literature of developing direct measures of productivity of employees in the service sector.<br>Ph. D.

Meyer, Kelly Joseph. "Effects of drifting prey abundance on food consumption and growth of brook trout in Shenandoah National Park." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42219.

Full text
Abstract:
The relation between prey density and brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis food consumption has not been quantified in natural streams. This relation may be most critical in the summer when southern Appalachian trout have demonstrated poor growth. It is not Known whether the poor growth is due to the low food densities or to excess temperatures and increased metabolic costs. Purposes of this study were to quantify the relation between prey density and food consumption in brook trout, identify how diel feeding and prey size selectivity by brook trout affect the relation, and to determine if slow growth in the summer was caused by low daily rations or other factors. Daily consumption was estimated in May, July and September of 1989, for four streams in Shenandoah National Park. Sampling was performed at 6-hour intervals over 24 hours. Adult and yearling trout did not consume more food at one specific time throughout the summer, but juvenile trout (< 100 mm) fed significantly less at night in both July and September. All sizes of fish selected for prey longer than 4mm. The best predictor of daily ration (corrected for temperature) over the summer was the number of prey longer than 4mm/m³. Models parameterized to quantify the relation between prey density and food consumption showed that adult trout were significantly more likely to have a higher daily ration per gram body weight (temperature and size corrected) than yearling trout at low ( < 1.0 prey longer than 4mm/m³) prey densities. Daily ration of juvenile trout was independent of prey abundance. The prey density-consumption relation was more consistent within streams than among streams, which suggests that habitat or population characteristics may influence the prey density-consumption relation. Trout had the most energy available for growth in July followed by May and then September. Daily ration was most dependent on temperature in May and on prey density in July and September. Juvenile trout did not decrease daily ration as much from July to September as did yearling and adult trout. All sizes of trout met maintenance costs in both early and late summer, yet yearling and adult trout did not grow in late summer although stream temperature was optimum for growth. Growth was negatively correlated with daily ration in the late summer, suggesting that activity costs may be more important in determining growth in late summer than prey densities. Activity costs varied substantially among streams. The effect of food consumption and habitat on activity costs needs to be defined to improve understanding of the determinants of growth in stream environments.<br>Master of Science

Meyers, Carol Ann. "Thermal buckling and postbuckling of symmetrically laminated composite plates." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42238.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper discusses an investigation into thermal buckling and post-buckling of symmetrically laminated composite plates. In this study, thermal buckling is investigated for laminates under two different simple support conditions, fixed and sliding. These laminates are subjected to the conditions of a uniform temperature change and a linearly varying temperature change along the length of the plate. Postbuckling in the presence of a uniform temperature change and nonlinear response to imperfections in the form of a thermal gradient through the thickness of the plate and a lack of initial flatness are also studied. The buckling response is studied using variational methods, specifically the Trefftz criterion. Postbuckling and responses to imperfections are studied using nonlinear equilibrium conditions. A Rayleigh-Ritz formulation is used to obtain numerical results from the formulations for the prebuckling response, the buckling response, and the post-buckling and imperfection responses. The analyses are applied to graphite-reinforced materials with (± 45/0₂)s and (± 45/0/90)s lamination sequences. Numerical results are obtained for these laminates and also for the case of these laminates being rotated 30° inplane. For the first laminate, for example, such a rotation results in a (+75/ — 15/30₂)s. stacking sequence. Such skewing of the principal material directions may be encountered when using fiber-reinforced materials in a structurally tailored design. In addition, the influence on thermal buckling of a lack of ideal boundary conditions in the form of boundary compliance and thermal expansion, which would occur in any real set-up, are investigated.<br>Master of Science

Descalzi, Doug. "System design of a satellite radio frequency interference analysis system." Master's thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/41244.

Full text
Abstract:
see document<br>The conceptual and preliminary design of the Dynamic Link Tool (DLTool) System are presented. The DLTool System performs moderate fidelity, satellite radio frequency (RF) interference and communications analysis. The primary customer of the DLTool System is Program 607 of Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMC) in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The system will dramatically improve the existing satellite RF interference analysis capabilities of Program 607, which are currently inadequate. Most-importantly, the DLTool System will reduce the required analysis time for satellite RF interference problems from approximately 6 hours to 1 hour. The DLTool System is intended to provide the capability to quickly predict or anticipate potential periods of RF interference. The design of the DLTool System includes an analysis of the needs of the customer, a feasibility study, the definition and allocation of operational and maintenance requirements, and the functional analysis of the system. The system is designed for a workstation-based local area network with simultaneous users, and includes a graphical user interface for input and output. The core component of the DLTool System is customized c++ code that performs the computational analysis of user defined satellite-ground station scenarios. The primary users of the system are communication engineers who will use the DLTool System to study RF interference issues for their customer.<br>Master of Science

Aftel, Robert. "Effect of atomization gas properties on droplet atomization in an "air-assist" atomizer." Master's thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32599.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>Air, nitrogen, argon and carbon dioxide were used as the atomizing gas in an 'air-assist' spray nozzle to determine the effect of these gases on mean droplet size, number density, velocity and their distributions in kerosene fuel spays and spray flames using a two dimensional phase Doppler interferometer. Data have been obtained with these atomizing gases using a base, air assisted case as a reference, since this is the most commonly used atomizing fluid in almost all applications. Comparisons were made between the gases on a mass and momentum flux basis. Both burning and nonburning sprays were investigated. The results show significant differences in atomization characteristics from the atomizer with different gases and under conditions of constant mass and momentum flux of the gas. The results also show that the presence of oxygen in the air atomized sprays assists in the combustion process, since it produces smaller and faster moving droplets, especially at locations near to the nozzle exit. In nonburning sprays, droplets had similar size and velocity. Lighter gases such as nitrogen more effectively atomized the fuel in comparison to the denser gases. Argon and carbon dioxide produced larger, slower moving droplets than air and nitrogen assisted cases in both the burning and nonburning sprays. Flame photographs revealed the argon and carbon dioxide atomized flames to have greater luminosity than air or nitrogen atomized flames.</p><br>Master of Science

Meyer, Christopher John. "Material use, product profile and channels of distribution in the U.S. wood furniture industry." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/41695.

Full text
Abstract:
U.S. manufacturers of wood household (SIC 2511), upholstered household (SIC 2512) and wood office furniture (SIC 2521) were surveyed to assess wood materials use within these three industry segments. The final sample frame contained 5,016 manufacturing locations. This investigation also provides a profile of the types of products produced and the channels of distribution used to move these products to the final consumer from a second sample of 347 manufacturers of wood household furniture. In 1989 the three industry segments surveyed consumed an estimated 2.3 billion board feet of hardwood lumber, 865 million board feet of softwood lumber, 1.3 billion square feet of particleboard (3/4" basis), and 370 million square feet of medium density fiberboard (3/4" basis). Further, an estimated 268 million square feet of softwood plywood (3/8" basis), 1025 million square feet of veneer and 310 million board feet of dimension stock were used in 1989 to produce wood furniture within the three industry segments examined. Within the second sample containing solely manufacturers of wood household furniture, solid hardwood furniture was most commonly produced. Over 50% of the responding companies manufactured bedroom, dining room and occasional furniture. Responses regarding the volumes of furniture shipped through channel intermediaries revealed over 60% of sales were through manufacturer’s representatives to retailers and wholesalers. Weighted by company sales, the largest volumes of wood household furniture were sold through free-standing furniture stores (28.9% of respondent’s sales) and manufacturer’s own stores (23.4%).<br>Master of Science
