Abstract:
The relatively recent success of the aquarium as a tourist destination has promoted a National interest in marine life. In the past twenty years cities have built aquariums that draw millions annually to various locations, justifying financial maintenance of delicate underwater life systems and increasing local tourism. Some successful aquariums such as the Monterey and Boston city aquariums have not only effectively drawn large numbers of visitors, but also have gained architectural recognition with award winning designs, therefore adding a new dimension to the recent trend in museum design. Still, with the emphasis on tourism, an issue that has yet to be addressed is the function of the aquarium as resource center of marine life. This proposal for the Jacksonville city aquarium endeavors to address the function of the aquarium as an institute for research and education, while utilizing the unique marine ecology setting to promote awareness of local underwater ecosystems. In this way, educational research and wildlife awareness set a new standard for aquarium design. Tourism can simultaneously emphasize inner-city urban development and promote the wealth of its existing ecology. This educational focus, in conjunction with the three states of marine habitat, establishes the basis for the aquarium design. By integrating the building design into the existing fabric of the city and focusing the research on the local rivers and habitats, the aquarium design will achieve the integrity needed to support this ambitious venture.
Master of Architecture

Williamson, David R. "Dropouts from community colleges: path analysis of a national sample." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77785.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which Tinto's model of the dropout process applied to a national sample of community college students. Strict definitions of persistence were used in applying a Tinto-based model to both 2- and 4-year student samples from the High School and Beyond (HSB) data set. The primary focus of the study was to determine the relative effects of social and academic integration, in relation to student background characteristics, on two measures of persistence: persistence in the institution, and persistence in higher education. The data were analyzed using path analyses procedures. Results only partially supported Tinto's theory. Major findings revealed that: 1) background variables directly affected persistence, no matter how defined, 2) the ability of Tinto's model to explain persistence may be highly dependent on the criteria used in defining persistence, 3) the model may better explain institutional persistence than persistence in the system of higher education, 4) student background characteristics may be more influential than institutional characteristics in explaining the long term persistence behavior of students, 5) results indicated that the Tinto model's ability to explain persistence was dependent upon the criteria used for defining persistence/dropout.
Ed. Abstract:
A place is said to be meaningful when man feels "at home." Looking at industrial cities, one finds an immense density to them. This results from the communities surrounding the industry. These communities developed from the housing supplied by the factories for the workers, primarily immigrants. They generally formed communities based on their ethnic origins and/or religious beliefs. The craftsmanship, quality and conditions were not the best. Within this context some of the strongest communities developed. Industry supplied these families with minimal housing. These families created something greater - a place to live - a shelter they could return to and a community to grow. The workers and their families succeeded in making a place of their own. 1
Master of Architecture

Weigel, Daniel J. "Impact of different strategies and levels of preferential treatment on different methods of bull dam selection." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/41590.

Full text
Abstract:
Three milk, fat yield and final score type records were simulated for each cow in 20 herds of 200 cows over 13 years. At completion of the simulation, cows were ranked by different selection methods and the top 2% were chosen to be bull dams. Preferential treatment was simulated by increasing milk and fat yields by 8, 16, 32, and 48% in separate copies of the simulation. Preferential treatment was given to a limited number of cows in copies of the original herds based on 8 strategies. Cows were chosen to receive preferential treatment for 2nd and 3rd records based on phenotypic records and ETA’s alone and in combination with a phenotypic minimum for final score type. Cows were also chosen to be biased in all records based on phenotypic records of dam, parent average ETA, maternal line and final score type. Bull dam selection methods compared used 2:2:1 milk:fat:type indexes of cow Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTA), first lactation PTA, (PTA-F), PTA after requiring phenotypic minimums, (PTA-P), 3-generation Pedigree Index (PI-3) and PTA after preselection on 3-generation Pedigree Index (PI-3/PTA). Comparison criterion was average merit on a 2:.2:.1 weighting of true transmitting abilities for milk, fat and type for cows selected in each of 3 replicates of the cow population that were started with different random number seeds. Selection methods PTA and PTA-F gave the highest average true breeding values when no bias was present, and both methods were robust to bias levels of 8 and 16% mean response, and continued to give the best results at these levels for all bias patterns studied. In general, selection on PI-3 and PTA-P gave poor results and should not be considered viable selection methods. Selection ability of PTA was greatly decreased at the 32 and 48% bias levels. Selection on PTA-F continued to be effective when bias did not occur in the first lactation or when bias was based on type score, while selection on PI-3PTA was unaffected by bias at any level. Requiring a high level of 3-generation Pedigree Index before selection on PTA appears useful for selecting bull dams when very high levels of bias are present.
Master of Science

Wells, Lois Elizabeth. "History of the Virginia State Advisory Council on Vocational Education, 1969-1981, and perceptions of its impact." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77784.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to document the history of the Virginia State Advisory Council on Vocational Education and to collect perceptions on the impact the Council had had with regard to its mandated functions and related activities. Suggestions were also solicited from selected individuals involved with the Advisory Council for ways to improve the impact of the Council, as well as opinions as to the greatest impact of the Council. In order to accomplish these goals, the history of the Virginia Council was researched and compiled, using the method of triangulation when possible. The history was written in the method of combined topical and chronological arrangements. Sources for the history of the Council included minutes of the Council's meetings, the Annual Evaluation Reports prepared and disseminated by the Council, and correspondence exchanged with and by the Council. Additional information was received from individuals who were interviewed. Perceptions were solicited from selected individuals regarding the impact of the Advisory Council. To accomplish this portion of the study, questionnaires and interviews were employed. Questionnaires were designed in the open ended format to allow freedom in responses and also to enable the investigator to use the same questions in the interviews. Based on the findings of this study, thirteen conclusions would seem to be supported. Five of the conclusions are listed below: 1. The Virginia State Advisory Council on Vocational Education was, for the period of this study, an active Council whose visibility in and respect from the vocational education community increased during this time. 2. The Council provided recommendations to the State Board of [Vocational] Education which were necessary and relevant for improving the vocational education program in the State. Most of the recommendations received favorable action by the State Board of [Vocational] Education. 3. The Advisory Council fulfilled, through various activities, the seven functions mandated by federal legislation. 4. The Advisory Council has been very effective in fostering coordination, cooperation, and relationships with other agencies and constituencies. 5. Increased representation on the Council from business and industry is needed.
Ed. D.

Descalzi, Doug. "System design of a satellite radio frequency interference analysis system." Master's thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/41244.

Full text
Abstract:
see document
The conceptual and preliminary design of the Dynamic Link Tool (DLTool) System are presented. The DLTool System performs moderate fidelity, satellite radio frequency (RF) interference and communications analysis. The primary customer of the DLTool System is Program 607 of Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMC) in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The system will dramatically improve the existing satellite RF interference analysis capabilities of Program 607, which are currently inadequate. Most-importantly, the DLTool System will reduce the required analysis time for satellite RF interference problems from approximately 6 hours to 1 hour. The DLTool System is intended to provide the capability to quickly predict or anticipate potential periods of RF interference. The design of the DLTool System includes an analysis of the needs of the customer, a feasibility study, the definition and allocation of operational and maintenance requirements, and the functional analysis of the system. The system is designed for a workstation-based local area network with simultaneous users, and includes a graphical user interface for input and output. The core component of the DLTool System is customized c++ code that performs the computational analysis of user defined satellite-ground station scenarios. The primary users of the system are communication engineers who will use the DLTool System to study RF interference issues for their customer.
Master of Science

Aftel, Robert. "Effect of atomization gas properties on droplet atomization in an "air-assist" atomizer." Master's thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32599.

Full text
Abstract:

Air, nitrogen, argon and carbon dioxide were used as the atomizing gas in an 'air-assist' spray nozzle to determine the effect of these gases on mean droplet size, number density, velocity and their distributions in kerosene fuel spays and spray flames using a two dimensional phase Doppler interferometer. Data have been obtained with these atomizing gases using a base, air assisted case as a reference, since this is the most commonly used atomizing fluid in almost all applications. Comparisons were made between the gases on a mass and momentum flux basis. Both burning and nonburning sprays were investigated. The results show significant differences in atomization characteristics from the atomizer with different gases and under conditions of constant mass and momentum flux of the gas. The results also show that the presence of oxygen in the air atomized sprays assists in the combustion process, since it produces smaller and faster moving droplets, especially at locations near to the nozzle exit. In nonburning sprays, droplets had similar size and velocity. Lighter gases such as nitrogen more effectively atomized the fuel in comparison to the denser gases. Argon and carbon dioxide produced larger, slower moving droplets than air and nitrogen assisted cases in both the burning and nonburning sprays. Flame photographs revealed the argon and carbon dioxide atomized flames to have greater luminosity than air or nitrogen atomized flames.

Master of Science

Wells, Karen Wilk. "Experimental investigation of nighttime losses from ICS solar domestic hot water systems." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/104661.

Full text
Abstract:
The nighttime losses from an integral collector storage (ICS) system were investigated. The significance of the sky temperature, wind speed, and ambient temperature on the losses were examined. Outdoor data was taken on several nights to characterize the thermal performance of an ICS system under various environmental conditions. Indoor tests were then performed under an artificial "nighttime sky" environment, with a simulated wind, in an attempt to duplicate the heat losses which occurred outdoors. The standard rating procedure which specifies the conditions for the heat loss tests for ICS systems was analyzed to see how well it characterizes the collector performance at night. Experimental results indicate a synergistic effect between the sky temperature and wind speed. The effects of wind on the losses from the ICS system overshadow the effects of small changes in sky temperature, but larger changes of sky temperature, with a constant wind speed, have a pronounced effect. It is recommended that both of these parameters be taken into account in heat loss tests in standard rating procedures. Indoor tests can duplicate outdoor heat loss results within 8 per cent. The minimum requirement for SRCC rating tests should be to monitor, record, and report the sky temperature.
M.S.
